Julio Jones Ran That 4.39 40 at the Combine … with a Fracture in His Foot
NFL Combine: Today is final day of the event some of you loathe. Defensive backs were the focus, and LSU’s Patrick Peterson a 219-pound CB, ran a sick 4.32 40, making his case to be the No. 1 overall pick. A note on Julio Jones – his impressive performance this weekend was apparently done on a bum wheel – there’s a report out that says Jones will need surgery to heal a fracture in his foot. In regards to Cam Newton, here’s a well thought-out blog post that claims the Bills probably aren’t bluffing with their interest in the Auburn QB. Yes, I’ll be doing a post-Combine mock draft tomorrow.

That is just unreal.
March 1st, 2011 at 1:50 PM
It’s okay, you could have addressed Duffy here directly
Lisk’s next project should be to examine top Combine scores in different events and see if it correlates to draft position…Al Davis might skew the results however
March 1st, 2011 at 1:50 PM
I hope you consult the savvy Kenny Williams for the mock!
March 1st, 2011 at 1:52 PM
Colin Kapernick is the guy that impressed me. I watched a couple Nevada games and he was always running for his life and didnt have much to work with but still made plays.
Seeing him beside all the other guys, hes big enough and has a hell of an arm.
March 1st, 2011 at 1:52 PM
I dont get it: You/Duffy criticize media and scouts who react and overrate the combine, but you are doing a new mock draft after the combine? Is it safe to presume that some of the data gathered at the combine will impact some players position in this mock draft?
March 1st, 2011 at 1:54 PM
Why does peterson remind me of Percy Harvin?
March 1st, 2011 at 1:55 PM
Peterson is never going to go No. 1. They talked about it on the broadcast and said that a corner will never go No. 1 unless he’s two full grades above everyone else, and that’s not the case with PP. They said you can always throw away from a corner, and that will always minimize their impact.
March 1st, 2011 at 1:56 PM
Seeing him beside all the other guys, hes big enough and has a hell of an arm.
He definitely has the size and arm strength, but his throwing motion is Jeff Tedford level bad. He needs to simplify his mechanics like Tebow did last year.
March 1st, 2011 at 1:56 PM
He seems to have an issue with staying healthy.
March 1st, 2011 at 1:56 PM
Dear Texans, if you don’t trade up to get either Peterson or Amukamara, then I fucking give up.
March 1st, 2011 at 1:57 PM
He seems to have an issue with staying healthy.
This is less of a problem than if he had done well in school.

I’d love for the lions to do this.
March 1st, 2011 at 1:58 PM
I think both are going to be great, but I think Prince will be better in man press as Pelini and Co. used him in that regard often.
March 1st, 2011 at 1:58 PM
Trading up to get Peterson will be too costly, but I think Prince can be had. He may fall to Dallas anyway.
March 1st, 2011 at 1:59 PM
WINNING

March 1st, 2011 at 1:59 PM
If you believe “Scorecasting”, trading up is a huge losing proposition…
March 1st, 2011 at 2:00 PM
I think I’d prefer Prince b/c they would give up less to get him. But it won’t happen. Then the lions will end up drafting some 2nd rate LB and he will suck.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:00 PM
I think both are going to be great, but I think Prince will be better in man press as Pelini and Co. used him in that regard often
Agreed. And right now it doesn’t look like they’ll have to move up as far to get Prince as they would with Peterson.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:01 PM
Are the Texans running a 3-4 still or have they moved back to a 4-3?
March 1st, 2011 at 2:01 PM
I think that will change when you new rookie contracts are out. It used to be taking shots from both ends in that you gave up a lot to draft them and then you had to pay them big money.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:01 PM
Peterson’s official time is now 4.34 (which is still blazing).

Don’t they also run man-press at LSU?
March 1st, 2011 at 2:01 PM
That’s a pretty fast “slave.”
March 1st, 2011 at 2:02 PM
If you believe “Scorecasting”, trading up is a huge losing proposition…
The point was made earlier, though I forget who said it, that if we’re looking at a lockout with the potential for very little in the way of free agency, then the only move available to address needs is through the draft. Therefore I don’t really see that it is a losing proposition so long as they move to a spot where getting Prince is virtually guaranteed (i.e. before the Cowboys).
March 1st, 2011 at 2:03 PM
Stephen Paea is obviously TBL’s #1 pick.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:03 PM
I think Prince is a better pick if you want instant production, but PP has an insane upside. He will also be dynamite on punt returns.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:03 PM
Are the Texans running a 3-4 still or have they moved back to a 4-3?
They moved back to the 4-3 after Capers left. But they run a pretty thoroughly hybrid defense at times also.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:04 PM
Unless you’re using a pick gained from trading Brett Favre as part of a package to move up to get Clay Matthews…that will never not be awesome to me

March 1st, 2011 at 2:05 PM
If Prince goes to Detroit I will reserve my seet on the bandwagon

Anyone who watched the Texans last year knows that we need an immediate impact corner.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:05 PM
I don’t know what they run.
Prince ran a legit 4.43…good for him shutting up idiots who were questioning his speed because of one play in one game.

Still slower than the guy from Miami and the SEC guy.

I think there’s plenty of room.

I would be a MASSIVE Lions fan. Stafford, Suh, Megatron, Vanden Bosch AND Prince?? Insanity.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:08 PM
If Prince goes to Detroit I will reserve my seet on the bandwagon
If you’re comfortable tossing the keys to Matt Stafford. I’m worried he will get injured trying to catch them
March 1st, 2011 at 2:09 PM
I see it the other way in that the cost of losing picks, which may be the only avenue to address needs/depth makes trading up even more of a losing proposition this year. Remember, you cannot sign un-drafted FA until there is a CBA.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:09 PM
This made me laugh.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:09 PM
Can we just stop this talk. I might actually think the lions will be good someday. You know the Lions are not gonna get Prince.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:10 PM
I see it the other way in that the cost of losing picks, which may be the only avenue to address needs/depth makes trading up even more of a losing proposition this year. Remember, you cannot sign un-drafted FA until there is a CBA.
Very true. But if you consider how badly the Texans need a corner I think giving up those picks is warranted.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:10 PM
Damn.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:11 PM
Such a lame comment. Dude got busted up 2 of the three times it popped, yet he’s a bitch. Makes total sense in today’s haternet.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:11 PM
Lions should draft Greg Jones in the second round.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:11 PM
The Lions will never be good. They’re the Cubs of the NFL.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:11 PM
BrawnyTom, it’s also certainly true though that other teams, knowing how hard up the Texans are for secondary help in the draft, could absolutely pants Houston in a trade. But after last year, I’m pretty desperate.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:11 PM
As a proud Cowboys hater, I will be very sad if he lands there, but that seems to make the most sense.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:12 PM
Not true. Even the Cubs make the playoffs once in a while.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:12 PM
You are the Usain Bolt of the Homer Olympics, sir.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:12 PM
Such a lame comment.
Look, he’s not the kind of guy who gets the keys tossed to him, OK? I understand you’re a fan but this is not a QB that you want driving
March 1st, 2011 at 2:13 PM
They need to draft OL and DBs like there’s no tomorrow.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:13 PM
you’d think NFL teams would be interested in this performance and how jones wanted to compete even tho he was hurt and it might kill his draft stock…
/combine is not overrated in any way whatsoever…the coverage is
March 1st, 2011 at 2:13 PM
As the resident Bills fan since jpq’s unfortunate departure, i don’t know what to think about the Bills wanting Cam Newton. they need defensive help more than a project QB with character issues.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:14 PM
As a proud Cowboys hater, I will be very sad if he lands there, but that seems to make the most sense.
If the Texans aren’t able to move up, then yes I agree that Prince probably goes to the Cowboys. But then again, JJ was just saying a month ago that he didn’t see any need at all for immediate help in the Cowboys’ secondary. If he’s still under this delusion a month from now, Cowboys fans should be really concerned.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:14 PM
The Texans have more needs then just 1 corner can fix, plus you will get improvement out of last years 1st rounder K. Jackson. I feel like if they are to trade up, it would be to get another pass rusher to compliment Mario and Cushing.
Pass Rushers > Cover Corners
March 1st, 2011 at 2:14 PM
I totally get the hesitance around him, but the dude finally got surgery on it, a la Drew Brees. You sound more and more like Nick Saban choosing Duante Culpepper. How’d that work out for the Dolphins?
March 1st, 2011 at 2:14 PM
Their OL is not as weak as people make it out to be. It could be better, but it’s not as bad as the Bears’ OL. The lions secondary needs so much help.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:14 PM
This might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever laughed at here that wasn’t a caption of a Snooki photo
March 1st, 2011 at 2:16 PM
they need outside pass rushers. you get to the QB, there is less need for great DBs.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:16 PM
I totally get the hesitance around him, but the dude finally got surgery on it, a la Drew Brees.
Enough of this. It was an excuse to use the QB’s driving the car metric that has apparently gotten just a bit too real.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:16 PM
Very true. I think I’m coming around to the idea of Atlanta drafting the kid out of Purdue (Kerrigan, sp?).
March 1st, 2011 at 2:17 PM
The Texans have more needs then just 1 corner can fix, plus you will get improvement out of last years 1st rounder K. Jackson. I feel like if they are to trade up, it would be to get another pass rusher to compliment Mario and Cushing.
Pass Rushers > Cover Corners
I agree that Jackson is bound to improve, but I still think another corner is more desperately needed than another pass rusher. The Texans had a decent–though not great–pass rush last year. Part of that was due to Cushing being off for a few games and then, Ryans got injured forcing Cushing to play out of position the rest of the year.
If Prince is gone, I’ll gladly take another pass rusher, but if he’s still around, Prince has got to be the pick.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:17 PM
i think that guy is going to be a great all around DE. plays the run excellently.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:17 PM
I thought Wade Phillips was committed to the 3-4 next year, no?
/not a Texans fan
March 1st, 2011 at 2:18 PM
Track guys who will never play a down in an NFL secondary don’t count.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:18 PM
I agree with that, but they have Vanden Bosch and Suh, meaning they can get to the QB. The problem with the Lions is they have no one who can keep a WR covered for more than 3 seconds. They really are that bad.
Seriously dude. Eat a dick. Do I really need to bring up your shit about Iowa? No. Go back to breaking down Tyrus Thomas comparisons.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:19 PM
Hahaha. I hope this never dies.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:19 PM
Track guys who will never play a down in an NFL secondary don’t count.
DVD will play in the NFL. Not very well, but he will play.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:20 PM
vandenbosch is a solid player, but he’s not a great pass rusher. suh is going to see more and more double teams. he will create a mess inside, but you need that guy who can really get off the edge. and this is why I said second round anyway. they aren’t getting a DB in the 2nd round that can start right away.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:20 PM
Abraham is only going to get worse as he ages, and getting a high-motor guy like Kerrigan who also can get to the QB would be excellent. The problem for Atlanta is that all of the elite DEs could be gone by No. 27.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:20 PM
And I also love how I think Husker clearly isn’t getting the joke.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:20 PM
As a returner maybe.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:21 PM
Sad panda.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:21 PM
I thought Wade Phillips was committed to the 3-4 next year, no?
/not a Texans fan
Wade is a 3-4 guy. I’ve honestly lost track of what they’ve said they were going to do. They have been a base 4-3 since Capers left, but it has also been combined with other looks at times.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:22 PM
Husker is feisty today. Can we get a Mark Richt on the Hotseat post ASAP?
March 1st, 2011 at 2:22 PM
He was getting them from the second week on last year. He saw them plenty. If Prince is there they should take him, but he will most likely be gone, so the best DE/OL will be the pick I would assume. There should be a really good DE available at 12 I would think.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:22 PM
It might if Stafford tries playing football again, we’d all feel bad mocking a cripple
March 1st, 2011 at 2:22 PM
What are you sulking about? I thought you were Carimi or bust?
March 1st, 2011 at 2:22 PM
ms621 – If Prince falls to them or they can move up very cheaply, then definitely draft him. If the cost is prohibitive, then I think Wade will want a pass rushing OLB/DE, which there seems to be a lot of in the top of this draft.
Of course they could just say “Eff it” and draft Julio Jones and out try to score everyone.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:22 PM
Kerrigan.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:23 PM
Of course they could just say “Eff it” and draft Julio Jones and out try to score everyone.
This is kind of what I’m hoping Jerry Jones decides to do so that the Texans don’t have to move up at all to get Prince.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:23 PM
I need back up plans, too just in case Andy Reid fucks up my dreams.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:24 PM
I don’t think ATL has a lot of picks this year to trade either, so I assume they won’t be able to move up that much w/out getting killed with giveaways. This is what sucks about a great regular season and a faceplant in the playoffs. You get fucked in the draft.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:25 PM
He will be on a scalding seat in my opinion, and with the first two games being Boise and South Carolina, his seat could burst into flames by the second week of September.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:26 PM
Look out for Allen Bailey in the draft. He will be lucky to go in the 1st round but I’ve got a good feeling about him. Give him a few consecutive weeks playing only one position and he will be a QB murderer
March 1st, 2011 at 2:27 PM
I expected a little better effort out of the retort. Tyrus Thomas works, but I want some creativity. There’s far to many things to bust my balls about to only come up with that.
It was like a screen play on 3rd and 12 or a sacrifice bunt down 2 with only one on.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:27 PM
If Georgia loses to Boise State, Richt should do the honorable thing and commit seppuku. The whole nation is counting on them de-frauding the Heisman race at the very least
March 1st, 2011 at 2:28 PM
Any dream involving Andy Reid should be classified as a nightmare.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:28 PM
He comes off as a workout warrior to me, but I heard the guys on NFLN saying he was poorly coached in his technique.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:30 PM
Boise is a well-coached team and has a QB in total command of his scheme. UGA did nothing well with any consistency last year. I’m super skeptical of UGA going into 2011. I think 8-4 is what the future holds, and that may not be enough for Richt. All depends on how the season unfolds though.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:31 PM
He comes off as a workout warrior to me, but I heard the guys on NFLN saying he was poorly coached in his technique.
He’s a legitimately great talent. Because of injuries and poor coaching he rarely played from the same spot on a week-to-week basis. Shannon kind of used him as a jack-of-all-trades but I think he’ll be more of a pure pass rusher in the league
March 1st, 2011 at 2:32 PM
He looks like a fucking tank with legs.
March 1st, 2011 at 2:32 PM
Husker is WINNING.
As opposed to a murdering alligators. No seriously, he once killed one with a shovel.

/I keed, I keed
March 1st, 2011 at 2:33 PM
No Titus Young and no Austin Pettis makes Kellen Moore look more pedestrian, I expect
March 1st, 2011 at 2:35 PM
I’m really banking on this, because they have that solid RB to go along with Moore. I really hope the WRs are the weak spot for them. UGA should win the game, but Boise has a habit of beating teams with more talent than they possess.
March 1st, 2011 at 3:06 PM
I’d give this possibility about a 95% chance of happening. Start thinking about someone besides Cam, Jersey.
