I’ll say this. Yes, there are parallels between the combine and a slave auction. But to find them “disturbing” is really to ignore all the (much more important) defining qualities of what is going on at the event.

That being said, um, the rest of the piece is well done. Combine – and pretty much everything that happens between the end of the NCAA season and draft day – is overrated. Smart front offices value game film above all.

I think the broad jump is more about the explosiveness of the player, especially if he’s coming off the line either as an offensive or defensive lineman, a receiver or pretty much any position but quarterback. Even for a quarterback it applies especially if he needs explosiveness to break out of a tackle.
