Stephen Paea Set an NFL Combine Bench Press Record with 49 Reps of 225 Pounds
Stephen Paea, a defensive tackle from Oregon State, benched pressed 225 pounds a record 49 times this weekend. The previous record was 45 times by three players – G Mitch Petrus, DE Mike Kudla and DT Leif Larsen. Does this incredible feat even matter? That depends. Have you heard of those guys? Are they NFL stars? Here are the other players in the Top 10 of the bench press in the last decade: DT Jeff Owens (44), DT Broderick Bunkley (44), G Scott Young (43), DT Tank Tyler (42), and DT Isaac Sopoaga (42). I’ll let you tally the number of All-Pro seasons between them.

So…the GMs aren’t over-rating the results at the combine? I was told earlier that this slave auction was overrated.

Missing: A link to somebody making a big deal about this and declaring Stephen Paea a surefire star.
February 28th, 2011 at 6:27 PM
Tony Mandarich could leg press him with ease

I’m sure TBL is searching through the interwebs now to find someone he can mock in this manner.
Then again, if someone does say this sends Paea (which makes me think of paella) up in the draft, then they deserve to be mocked.

I am pretty sure its Brodrick.

This would seem like a negative to me (being at the far end of the rep curve) it probably means you have short arms in addition to being strong. The shorter the arms, the less force required to loft the same weight to full extension. And short arms are not usually a positive for a lineman
February 28th, 2011 at 7:04 PM
I know casual fans haven’t heard of him, but Paea was Pac 10 DPOY. He’s, like, pretty damn good.
February 28th, 2011 at 7:05 PM
Yeah, but that’s like being the Big 12 DPOY.

So he should have stopped @ 30 reps? I’m pretty sure they are measuring wingspan, so why would you not do as many reps as possible…

Any certain casual fan you’d like to name that we know?

Fucking Firefox screwed me up long enough for Clownaso to beat me to it. What every single one of those guys (Bunkley excepted, and to a much lesser extent Tyler) has in common: they started off as fringe candidates. Their bench press numbers likely didn’t make a tiny bit of difference as to where they were drafted. Paea can actually play.

His arms are actually relatively long. The knock on him is that he’s “thin” in the legs. He was alate first/early second rounder before this and he probably did help himself a little as far as diffentiating from the pack. But the other DL that were rated higher than him are putting on freak shows in their own rights so it’s not like he’s overtaking Fairley or Dareus

February 28th, 2011 at 7:32 PM
Were it not for his non-stop injuries, Kudla would own the combine record for eternity. I believe he could do 60ish reps of 225. Junior year at tOSU he put up 555, senior year…610.
But I know him because I banged someone very close to him.

I think everyone that likes hockey on here is pre-disposed to hating the Caps so they might be inclined to judge them harshly.
February 28th, 2011 at 8:00 PM
Caps got Arnott from the Devils
February 28th, 2011 at 8:01 PM
Ill, Arnott is an upgrade on Steckel and I really like the move for Wideman.
Arnott is a big, reliable centre who can contribute some offensively. He’s won a couple Cups.
Wideman’s number from Florida don’t look great but he was carrying Bryan Allen (another guy traded today). Had back to back 50 point seasons in Boston.
February 28th, 2011 at 8:03 PM

The Oilers’ lighter blues are some of the nicest sweaters in the league.
Glad the Caps went back to the older style. The sweaters that had the Capitol on the front and the ones with the Eagle were terrible.

TBL – did buckeye bust Gholston ever even notch a sack? I can’t totally blame him for his epic fail, because he was woefully miss used as a LB.

it makes it easier for me b/c every other local team is terrible (maybe not the orioles this year!) and i like 3 metro stops from the verizon center. live hockey games are money.
February 28th, 2011 at 8:20 PM
don’t think gholston got a sack and shouldn’t have played OLB. he was a one trick pony at OSU.
February 28th, 2011 at 8:21 PM
Arnott is without question a bigger upgrade. He may be in his mid 30s, but he can still get more production on offense than Steckel. Fuck Steckel.
February 28th, 2011 at 8:22 PM
So Charlie Sheen can pass a drug test, but half these Contador couldn’t. Just tells you how full of crap half these guys are like Contador, Cushing, Mayo, etc. I seriously think Sheen does have the Adonis/Tiger DNA. I have no idea what 7 gram rocks are, but smoking them does sound like a prolific feat.
DOA, he’s going to be the source of a good 30-50% of fantasy football names next fall.

Last year at this time, 3 Big East schools were in top 10 and it was “best conference ever,” this year 3 Big Ten schools are in top 10 and now this year’s Big East is some historic superpower. While there’s no question the Big East is the toughest, what do we base conference superiority on? Is it the elites, the middle, or top to bottom?
The Big East is so tough to gauge b/c the bad teams are atrocious, and the fact that there are 16 teams. So obviously there will be more difficult teams to play. But, conference play is so unbalanced. It’s mathematically impossible for there to be as many above .500 teams in the Big Ten in conference as there are in the Big East.

Great thing about Piers Morgan…he’s giving Sheen enough rope to hang himself. That’s what a good interviewer does. You ask the questions, have some follow-ups, and let the subject’s “whatever” shine on through.
In Sheen’s case, it’s batshittery-ness.

Well, I’m not a fan with a lot of the current television programming. But I say The Sopranos is GOAT when it comes to incorporating songs to the current storyline.

In regards to the original video, the guys who can bench press the most are guys who are naturally endomorphs (fat) and have a stubblier bone structure in thier arms so their extension when doing the BP is much shorter. While this is quite impressive, I’d be much more impressed if a guy with a smaller build did it. For example, the fact that Earl Boykins can bench 315 lbs is fucking ridiculous.

This basically.

don’t think any of these guys were even first day selections. but petrus is in the league. in fact, I think he has a legit shot at a starting job next fall.
but maybe you should also look at guys like DeMarcus Ware who had speed and agility times of defensive backs in some drills and vaulted him to the top of the draft. but let’s ignore those guys.
