Howard Bryant’s Lawyer Claims Racism Led to the Arrest
Howard Bryant: A lawyer for the ESPN writer who was arrested Saturday in Massachusetts claims overzealous, racist cops were the ones at fault. Bryant (who is black) and his wife (who is white) spoke to The Republican and both said “police used unnecessary force” during the arrest and threatened to taser him, all in front of the couple’s 6-year-old son. Veronique Bryant is not pressing charges. “It wasn’t an assault or a battery. I was not scared. He was not touching me. We had a discussion. The police reacted in a totally inappropriate way,” she told the paper. Police claim witnesses saw Bryant choking his wife and pushed her into the car. [Republican]

Ohhhh! I get it. They were just sitting around having a nice quiet discussion & some racist cops busted in, pulled the kid out of bed and started screaming “we’re gonna taser your dad, kid, watch this!”
February 28th, 2011 at 2:47 PM
Have any of the witnesses spoken up and confirmed that this is what they saw?
February 28th, 2011 at 2:48 PM
Racist cops in Mass.!? NOOO

February 28th, 2011 at 2:51 PM
in the faaaace! IN THE FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE!!
February 28th, 2011 at 2:52 PM
Yeah, that type of shit used to work in the 90′s and beyond, before the TV show Cops, and before everybody had a camera on their cell phone.
The bottom line is that if you call the police on a domestic dispute and someone, anyone, alleges violence, an arrest is going to be made. Anyone who doesn’t think they belong in handcuffs is going to say being put in handcuffs is unnecessary force.

Coincidence that this is the post after a hearty discussion concerning slave auctions? Yeah, probably.
February 28th, 2011 at 2:54 PM
Howard Bryant should go back and read the last thread’s comments. Nothing but raycess in there.

Wait… that’s a white woman?
/sees everyone looking at me
What? It’s just… that’s not exactly something I’d expect a white woman to be named.
February 28th, 2011 at 2:57 PM
Who called the cops? The wife? Or witnesses?

Whoa… went to lunch… what’d I miss? Did Whitlock stick his big head into the last post’s comments?

Well this is not the thread to rejoin the commentariat after my lunch and meeting. I’ll just wait until the next post.

Howard Bryant would have had his hands cut off if he was a slave.

I noticed that earlier. For some reason, I think I prefer when it shows the comment. Maybe just b/c that’s what I’m familar with.
February 28th, 2011 at 3:03 PM
yeah if he got caught stealin food from the kitchen…he did bodily harm to a white woman(supposedly) he’d be so dead
February 28th, 2011 at 3:04 PM
it works really well to say this to the cop when you get pulled over for speeding in a school zone, too.
February 28th, 2011 at 3:04 PM
Bryant is the kind of pulling the race card, the fact that it came into play in his private life is pretty ironic.
February 28th, 2011 at 3:05 PM

I don’t think you can call a black lesbian a queen. That sounds homophopic. Or something.
February 28th, 2011 at 3:10 PM
+1
February 28th, 2011 at 3:11 PM
Whenever the phrase “race card” is used, the one using it automatically dismisses the accusation. Not so fast. Just because someone’s paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t being followed.

February 28th, 2011 at 3:12 PM
I don’t know Gomer, based on that overreaction to Duffy’s words in the last post, I’d say this board is full of quality users of that so called card. Especially those who keep referring to this card everytime the subject arises.
February 28th, 2011 at 3:13 PM
This is true. I do have a hard time believing that 5 eyewitnesses made up the choking/pushing though, or only thought they saw it because it was a black guy and white woman.
February 28th, 2011 at 3:13 PM
It would have to be something that pokes fun of UofM more so than that.
February 28th, 2011 at 3:13 PM
Something about a boy calling wolf
February 28th, 2011 at 3:13 PM
how was that comment being tough?
February 28th, 2011 at 3:14 PM
Howard Bryant allege racism?!?!?! SHOCKING.
The fact that his wife denies anything happened is pretty moot. That happens frequently in domestic abuse cases. I’ll wait to hear what witnesses come forward.
February 28th, 2011 at 3:14 PM
Are all 5 of those witnesses white?
February 28th, 2011 at 3:14 PM
Perhaps the wife knows that if she charges him with something he will lose his job and she’ll lose her spending money?

Just another reason ESPN sux. There is no possible explanation for putting her on TV, or for having her write for you at all.

You don’t understand! This goes all the way to the top. The establishment saw the opportunity to take down a middling sports writer and pounced!

Wow. That warrants a tweet? How tough is it to pitch a scoreless inning in a pre-season baseball game? I’m pretty sure with some luck, I could get three major leaguers to fly out with balls hit to the warning track.
February 28th, 2011 at 3:20 PM
Do you think they call her “Threefer” at ESPN?
February 28th, 2011 at 3:21 PM
I heard it was because now that she is married she doesn’t want to do anal.
February 28th, 2011 at 3:21 PM
You’re just supporting her b/c she went to UofM.
February 28th, 2011 at 3:21 PM
It was an overreaction because no one reacted to what he actually said, and in the midst of your confusion, people do what they always do around here and threw around the term “race card” like it’s a Get out of Jail Free card. It’s funny how everyone who is labeled as using this card is Black.
February 28th, 2011 at 3:22 PM
I hope TBL give us a pep talk about stopping the race talk. He’s funny when angry.
February 28th, 2011 at 3:22 PM
….. or a bleeding heart
February 28th, 2011 at 3:23 PM
Can white people use the race card?
February 28th, 2011 at 3:23 PM
Thats just because we ignore the mexicans and asians.
February 28th, 2011 at 3:24 PM
You know what’s funny? If you take out the part that Howard Bryant is black and just refer to him as “Boston sportswriter” or “ESPN writer” Howard Bryant I’m more inclined to dismiss allegations against the cops. That being said, it’s entirely possible that he choked her AND the cops were overzealous. So he’s a wifebeater and the cops are assholes. Sounds about normal
February 28th, 2011 at 3:24 PM
next time a story is posted about a person saying their being arrested/punished is because they’re white i’ll happily say something about them using the race card. Deal, Furious?
February 28th, 2011 at 3:24 PM
I would like to use it. Even after 70 years of progress, we germans are still from time to time labeled as nazis. IT HURTS I TELL YOU, IT HURTS!!!

it’s tricky, but when done correctly it’s a great kicker for a pair of aces.
February 28th, 2011 at 3:30 PM
I’m on the job hunt and always jump at the opportunity to check off being a white male even though they say you don’t have to answer on applications…that’s trying to use the race card in my favor, right?

February 28th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
the unemployment numbers breakdown by race says differently today and historically says differently. But hey, go ahead and continue to believe otherwise. It always serves as a great race card to use when things are going badly. Ask the late great Jesse Helms.
February 28th, 2011 at 3:36 PM
I hope the judge used that exact wording.
February 28th, 2011 at 3:41 PM
So Bryant is a “boy” now? Has he done this before by claiming racism by cops? /Stirring it up even more, the Kraut asked for it
February 28th, 2011 at 3:41 PM
i was beat by a black dude in the 200meters at baylor. RACE CARD! you know, if there where more opportunities for white sprinters, the world would be a better place
February 28th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
All kidding aside, none of us know what really happened. Darrell, you accuse people here of immediately discounting someone’s use of the race card. I could say you are doing the same in the opposite direction. You don’t know either. Howard Bryant really could have physically assaulted his wife. He really could have resisted arrest. He really could be guilty here. Before you go around calling people out for their penchant for siding with authority, will you atleast admit that often you do the same, just in opposite direction.
February 28th, 2011 at 3:43 PM

Menarky….Bringing nothing to the table since 2010
darrel- swooping in for a chance to race bait since 2010.
February 28th, 2011 at 4:07 PM
Bryant could have beaten his wife. I’m not defending him one way or the other because there isn’t enough out there. The difference here is if I was coming from the perspective that the cops are lying, I haven’t said it because there isn’t enough out there, yet this same lack of evidence hasn’t stopped many of the “race card” subscribers on this board to automatically accuse Bryant of using this card. I mean, it’s not surprising, because this is a country that needs to “feel safe” beyond all else, so the fact that cops have lied and will lie is not a settling feeling for some.
February 28th, 2011 at 4:08 PM
then I need to get a higher quality of bait, because you keep responding and the guy at the store promised me that my bait wouldn’t attracts slugs.
February 28th, 2011 at 4:09 PM
I didn’t know this phenomenon occured among women who GIVE anal to their “husbands.”
