Greg McElroy Nearly Got a Perfect Score on the Wonderlic
Wonderlic: Alabama QB Greg McElroy, who was a Rhodes Scholar finalist, scored a 48 on the Wonderlic test according to the Fort Worth Star Telegram. A 50 is a perfect score. In other Combine news, I’ve been watching it all morning and the defensive lineman are putting on a show. Robert Quinn of North Carolina looks like a monster and a Top 10 pick. As does Alabama’s Marcell Dareus. Nick Fairley has been impressive, but the buzz is that he won’t go first. Unless it’s a smokescreen so the Panthers don’t take him. I’m with Prisco – Fairley’s the best player in the draft.

I’m more interested in the short shuttle being under 4.3 and vertical over 36″. Change of direction and power are more important than straight line speed for someone trying to rush the power. /Football Outsider’d

I love the combine. Let’s ignore 2-4 years of on the field performances and stats thereof and instead decide how we’re going to spend millions of dollars on the team’s future based on how many times a guy can bench press a certain amount.

Greg McElroy = Chad Pennington 2.0?

People overestimate just how much stock teams put into the Combine…it’s just one part of the evaluation process, workout warriors like Mike Mamula who see their stock rise because of this are few and far between

Ha! Teams would be so fortunate.

Seems like most of the big names are pretty much doing what was expected of them. With Julio Jones going above & beyond

Ok, I’ll agree it’s a bit of a tired trope, but the reason it keeps emerging is that there are teams who will ignore much of a player’s college career and move him up or down the draft based mostly on the combine.

There’s a lot of baggage and “issues” around Fairley. If you’re spending what will likely be the last #1 overall contract before the rookie wage scale on a player, you want nothing on his resume that could give you pause.

depends on how the owner of the team views risk taking. high risk, high reward might be worth it to them.

That’s gonna happen with Dontay Moch and his 4.45 as a DE/OLB. He’ll go about three rounds quicker than he should.

So is the big thing around here now to put a picture of your dog in your gravatar? Seems like at least half a dozen people are doing that now.

Did Jake Locker throw the ball well in his workout? If so he could be a case towards being picked thanks in large part to the Combine
Of course being a good college football player really isn’t any more of an indicator of NFL greatness than being a top physical specimen

I was going to use Darius Heyward-Bey and his 40 time at the combine, but I realized it was a poor example as that pick can be explained as much by the insanity of Al Davis as it can anything else.

Certainly. I don’t think any reasonable person would argue that the combine should be ignored entirely.

Its going to be really hard to miss on a top ten pick this year. I wouldn’t mind if the Browns ended up with Dareus, at all.
However, with all the DL talent in this draft, there are bound to be a few guys who slip into the 2nd. I’m really hoping the Patterson falls to the Browns and they snag him then get their DL in the 2nd.
Patterson, Haden, Ward = Nasty.

Can’t blame the guy for trying to use the Charlie Sheen method of success. He just missed on the WINNING! part.

Must have been a lot of questions about cheap labor management.

Beastly ad on the sidebar has to be the worst ever.
As for McElroy, I don’t think he is a starting NFL talent. Should be a solid backup with his smarts, though.

The rookie wage scale will be in effect before players from this draft are signed.

I’ve been seeing the same Groupon ad for about a month now. At least the autoplay Chad and Terrell show ad is long gone.

I have lost all faith in the Rhodes Scholar now if he could not score a perfect 50. Don’t you get some points for just getting your name right?
//Ryan Fitzpatrick (I scored a 49)

He passes the 26-27-60 test. 26 or better on the Wonderlic, 27 games started in college, over 60% completion percentage. Most of those guys are very successful. Decent article by SI for once.
