2011 NFL Combine Results: Julio Jones is an Athletic Freak and Jake Locker’s Very Fast

The 2011 NFL Combine results are rolling in, and two players have emerged (besides the obvious: Cam Newton) on the offensive side: Alabama receiver Julio Jones and Washington QB Jake Locker.
Julio Jones put on a show early Sunday at the Combine in Indy, stunning everyone with a 4.39 40 (faster than the consensus top WR in the draft, Georgia’s AJ Green, who ran a 4.48) and a 11’3″ in the broad jump. They weren’t quite Calvin Johnson results from the ’07 Combine, but they cemented Jones as a 1st round pick. I’ve had Jones going 14th to the Rams in the draft, but today’s performance could vault him higher. The Titans and Redskins could use a receiver, but the problem is neither has a QB to get them the ball.
Locker has been an easy target for critics due to a poor senior season, and the debate rages about whether he’s 1st round material or not. Everyone knows he’s a fantastic athlete – he ran a 4.52 40 this morning, which was excellent, but a far cry from the alleged 4.39 he ran last summer.
Locker’s accuracy – or lack thereof – has been the problem, and it has caused Mike Lombardi of the NFL Network (he’s a former NFL executive with half a dozen NFL teams) to drop Locker to the 3rd or 4th round. Mike Mayock of the NFL Network still has Locker in the first round. I still don’t see how Locker falls out of the first round with so many teams needing a QB. Perhaps my last projection of 12 is too high. If he isn’t taken by 15, though, I think he’ll fall to the 2nd round. Everyone after the Dolphins – except for Seattle at 25 – is set at QB, and all have needs ahead of a backup QB.

I just read this about Mallett’s media session:
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Scouting-combine-Saturday-winners-and-losers?urn=nfl-326905#remaining-content
Sorry if that’s been discussed before, I hadn’t seen it anywhere else.

In the end, he’s right. He doesn’t have to address this with the media at all. Just the people who are in a position to draft him.

Very true that he doesn’t have to address them, but seems like he handled it terribly.
The Ryan Mallett Witchhunt has been pretty amazing. Haven’t seen the media out for someone’s head as much as this since the days of Barry Bonds.

I’m more curious to know if Mallett’s mother ever exchanged sex for money

I’ve been pretty busy lately and don’t really care about combine/draft stuff much in the first place so I guess I’ve missed all of this. I hadn’t heard any allegations of drug use or anything else about Mallett until today.

The rumors have been rampant that he was “addicted” to drugs, and some have suggested that it was even a reason as to why he didn’t come out last year. But never has there been any proof that he’s done anything wrong. It doesn’t prevent the media from bringing it up every time he’s discussed, though.

I thought the Mallet quotes were going to be damning based on all of the headlines on ESPN and Yahoo!
But, “First one, huh?” is really that bad?
Ryan Leaf-like? Who knows. If he was defensive in the team meetings, I would think that’s bad form.

Uh-huh…(eye roll)

I suppose I’d hit the bong too if I threw interceptions when the Luckeyes were trying to blow yet another bowl game against the SEC.
In other news: I’m really liking the Thunder in the postseason.

Who will in turn leak it to the media/public somehow. At least when you yourself answer the questions, you have an advantage as to how the message is formed, and some control (albeit little) as to how that message is received. I hate the fact that celebrities need PR and image consultants, but I think Mallet should have gone a different route with this whole thing. Generally we (the fans) appreciate the story of those who come clean and want redemption.

Yeah, let me know when he’s getting in people’s faces and shouting them down.

Mallett will slide in the draft, but not enough to make him a bargain.

Thunder are looking great early, up 35-22 on Lakers and Perkins isn’t even playing

If it was as unfair against women and minorities as it’s made out to be, you’d think she’d be screaming from the rooftops, “Stop! Stop! Stop!”

I remember someone was recommending this prop. From Chad Millman at ESPN:
Crazy stuff. @sportsbook_com tells me it had $26K in action on Cam’s 40 time prop. Number opened 4.51, closed 4.6. He ran 4.59. Book lost 9K

Sting is getting it done. BTW…what wrestling name are we giving Carmelo and Amare?

Carmelo – Ms. Elizabeth

That NBA commercial is pretty jarring:
“We’re gonna love you in OKC…” you know, after the league rips the team from Seattle because the owner is a tremendous douchecanoe.

Wouldn’t that make Amar’e the Macho Man?
I don’t think I can live in a world where any other man is “The Macho Man.”
/Macho Man up!

I love how ESPN pumps up the Knicks. It’s just funny when you consider they just lost to the Cavs…again.
