Chris Bosh Flopped Badly, Then Shot 1-of-18
Chris Bosh’s flop against the Bulls was vintage Vlade Divac in the first half last night. As Carlos Boozer went into his move, Bosh acted as if he were drilled by a Charles Oakley hook or perhaps by a bullet (the flop is in GIF form after the jump). Multiple replays show Bosh was grazed, at best. Then, Bosh proceeded to shoot 1-for-18 – mostly wide open 10-15 foot jumpers – and the Heat lost in Chicago, 93-89.
Miami optimist: Bosh was 1-18, the bench was outscored 22-2 and yet the Heat still had a chance to tie the game in the final 15 seconds (LeBron’s 3 was a brick).
Miami pessimist: The Heat are 0-5 against the Celtics and Bulls, plus 0-2 against the Mavericks. They’re 12-14 against teams that are .500 or better.
Especially after the Kendrick Perkins deal, it’s tough not to like the Bulls chances in the East. Noah and Boozer will have another 25 games together. Tom Thibodeau has plenty of time to find a starting shooting guard. And if Chicago is able to steal the No. 1 seed – just two games back – then it avoids Boston/Miami/New York until the conference finals.
The No. 1 seed is extremely crucial in the East. You get to pummel Indiana in the first round, and then take the Atlanta-Orlando winner, neither of which scares anyone right now. The Hawks are once again ordinary, and the Magic just can’t get it together. If Boston slips to 3rd – the Celtics ran out of gas last night in Denver and caved badly in the 4th quarter – it’ll have to face the Knicks, then Heat. That could be 14 grueling games before facing the quickest point guard in the league and two power forwards who will be relatively fresh, having been injured and missed about 50 games between them.

it’ll have to face the Knicks,
No defense
then Heat.
No interior presence
Bulls v Celtics ECF?

Thoughts on the Bulls:
They don’t need a shooting guard, they just need to start the right guy. Brewer should be starting with Korver coming off the bench. Bogans should only be playing 10 mpg or so backing up both wings.
I like Rose’s game and how he attacks the rim, but he needs to understand that when he goes to the rim, he can easily dump the ball off to Boozer for a layup. Boozer was open all night on the block on Rose’s drives.

Oh, and Rose is really smaller version of Jordan early in his career. The guy has the same tenacity and attitude about wanting to eviscerate his opponent. He just needs to learn a little control and how to trust his teammates like Jordan learned after a few seasons.

Next time Bosh will grab Boozer’s elbow and hit himself.

WHY ARE YOU HITTING YOURSELF? WHY ARE YOU HITTING YOURSELF?!
February 25th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
I agree tih you Dr. Tom Rose could have easily had about 10 or more assists if he would have dropped the ball of to Boozer on the block once he went past his initial defender.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
Speaking of ROse, and a slight aside… I’d love a little post or detail on how NBA players seem to pick up their game after competing in Summer Games. Maybe I’m slightly overreacting, but this year, we’ve seen most of the guys who put in work in the FIBA worlds play out of their fucking minds. The same thing seemed to happen 2 years ago after Beijing.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
My favorite was when Jose posted the GIF and described as “Sniper shoots basketball player in Chicago tonight”. What a horrible acting job.
Magic always give the Bulls trouble though and that would likely be their 2nd round opponent. The last game against them broke a trend, but Dwight traditionally goes off against Chicago.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
Yeah, when you consider the position is really their 4th or 5th scoring option depending on who else is on the floor the better term to use is the old-timey off guard
With the minutes Bogans ends up playing a night anyhow (I think it’s only about 15-17, if that keeps up he’ll set some record for fewest minutes played by a guy who started 82 games) and how Brewer/Korver are on the floor at the end of the game I don’t think it even matters…they got a good rotation going on now so why try to screw it up?
February 25th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
It makes me worry about stamina though Jersey. I saw it from the Hawks this year when they only had an 8 week summer. The first 3 months of the season was like watching a team at 75% speed.
I worry it hits them on the backend of the season in basketball.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
I released my anger towards Bosh on Twitter last night, but it was somewhat reduced by how terrible he played. He just keeps verifying Durant’s comments.
Agree with Dr. Tom about Rose attacking the rim, he only focuses on finishing instead of possibly finding an open guy. The refs last night were also terrible, looked like he got fouled 3 or 4 times on drives to the hoop and got no call.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
I know it’s just one game but am I crazy to think that Denver is better now? They’re two deep at every position (nobody played more than 32 minutes last night), they’re athletic, fast, they have guys that can defend, guys that can shoot, etc. They certainly lack a go-to guy (JR SMith?), but I would hate to face them in the first round.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
noah sucks.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
This is certainly true. He got mugged a few times last night. But still, when he’s going up against 3 guys at the rim he needs to understand that guys are open.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
By no means do I think the Bulls are the favorite to nab the #1 seed either. It’s still Boston’s to lose. We’ll all have to wait and see how the new players fit in there and how the defense responds without Perk in the paint.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:29 AM

Well just having the Melo business done helps refocus the team.

There’s probably something to be said about that group now playing without the confusion and unease surrounding the team when the Melo business was going on…can just play ball now

I was bitching about LeBron on Twitter last night getting foul calls on every play down the stretch but I fully admit that many of them were warranted. The guy just bull rushes the lane, I was dumbfounded why they didn’t either foul him before he got there or double team him. How else do you stop it?
With about 4 minutes left, Thibs put Noah on him on the perimeter and had Brewer roll over to help once he got near the paint. It at least slowed him down a little.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:31 AM

I totally agree. April and May I’m going to be trapped inside in front of my television with baseball season starting, the Stanley Cup playoffs and the NBA playoffs. I probably won’t watch any of the West in the NBA until the conference Finals though. Even in the East, it’ll mostly be the Bulls and Celts.
I know there aren’t a whole lot of hockey people in a Ballin’ thread but the NBA’s east is like the NHL’s west. It’s going to be a war of attrition the whole way through.

IF you are thinking SA and LA are a lock to get there, don’t sleep on Dallas and OKC making things interesting. OKC are phenomenal to watch, and seem to be good guys at the same time. A rare combination these days.

February 25th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
Not at all Vincent. I agree there’s probably 4 contenders in the West. I’ll just be more focused on the Stanley Cup playoffs so the Bulls will be the only must watch for me in the NBA playoffs. Especially the first round series. NHL has more upset potential in the early rounds than the NBA.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
The Bulls already have a great shooting guard. His name is Derrick Rose.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
Tough to say so early. Neither Gallo nor Felton did much offensively last night. Chandler played well on both sides. I do think this team improved defensively and that is something Karl wants. Also, this team is huge. Six guys listed over 6-10 and 3 more that are over 6-8.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:47 AM

I thought Chicago was getting a storm. Guess it’s Ohio.
As for the Nuggets … agree the team is really long and actually could be a dangerous run-and-gun team in the playoffs. I know it’s just one game but how deep is that roster 1-10?
Lawson/Felton could start for a lot of teams
AA/Smith are defense/offense combo
Chandler/Gallo = athletic, aggressive scorers
Harrington/KMart = tough
Anderson/Nene = tough, rebounding
February 25th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
So a quarter of the playoff teams in the NHL West will have losing records?
February 25th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
OKC just got a lot better.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
i have to respect Clown’s game. In a way, some of his tactics remind me of mine.
Know your opponents’ weakness, or what pisses them off.
Take subtle jabs that you know will hit home, but try to disguise them as “jokes.”
You don’t come off as a dick, and then you snicker as they foam at the mouth in anger.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
Bottom of the NBA West is comprised of as many D-League teams as the East. To keep you ever informed about the NHL West, the 10th place team currently has a winning record even when factoring in OTLs.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
TBL saw your tweet. I think every team in the west can take 2 from the Lakers. Look at the teams that have beat them this year. They’re susceptible to plenty of losses.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
Don’t think this is your call to make
February 25th, 2011 at 10:57 AM

This tactic was quite evident in your Ballin posts from 2008-2010 towards the Lakers.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
I think they matchup very well against San Antonio, Dallas, and the Lakers. But I think they might be ripe for the picking for a team that can go small like Portland.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Phoenix is 10th in the West… and they have a winning record.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:59 AM

Good point though, TBL. The nuggets do have some talent. They now lack that superstar, but boy did George Karl sound happy Melo is gone. Breath of fresh air. He can actually coach again.

Said it on the Twitter last night and the question still stands, when did pro sports conferences become the stuff of debate fodder like the overplayed college conversations? Wouldn’t you rather your team be in the WORSE conference? No one held it against Magic’s Lakers that the West didn’t have much by way of competition for them
February 25th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
Aside from the fact that no one will pummel Indiana, I’d say that I find it extremely likely the Pacers get the 7 seed. Much more favorable schedule than 76ers.

Chicago weather people are notorious for poorly predicting snow fall amounts. The only reason they got the Feb blizzard right is because it was covering the entire midwest and there was no way it was going to miss us.
I believe Cleveland’s snow, much like always, is lake effect.

He’s trying to say that the bottom of the West is as bad as the bottom of the Eats… which is completely false. And then, when I said that Phoenix was a good team because they had a winning record, he said don’t just look at that. I then punched a puppy.

Why do we even argue with SC anymore?

Staying and playing at the Marriott Golf Club at Champions Circle.
I’m getting the R11 driver, R11 19 degree hybrid, 4-PW R9 irons, xFT 52-54 (bent to 56)-58 (bent to 60) wedges. First time I have ever been custom fit for any clubs, jumping to extra stiff shafts. Re-shafted the i15 3 wood I got for Christmas and cut my putter down two inches to drop the toe.

New York was #8 and made it to the NBA Finals in 1999.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:29 AM
Here’s another question… with the “super teams” being formed at whatnot, what’s the chances we see any of those lower seeds making a run in the future? Probably going to be dominated by the 1-4s, maybe even 1-3s for the foreseeable future, no?
February 25th, 2011 at 11:31 AM
Love the irony of him flopping against a former Dukie.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:32 AM
I don’t get your point. The West has been consistently dominant for pretty much the entire decade.
Hell, the Lakers faced a 50 (!) win team as the 8th seed last year.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:32 AM
Again, look at the West. Portland is probably going to finish no higher than a 5. Are you certain any one of the top 4 teams in the West will beat them. I don’t mean confident… but certain.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:34 AM
you and me both, dude…enjoy dallas. i’m jealous as shit.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:37 AM
Shortened season (48 games i think). Fluky stuff happens. That was the Spurs “asterisk” championship, according to Phil Jackson.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:38 AM
Portland will not make the Conference Finals, let alone the NBA Finals. I will bet you anything you want and give you any odds you want.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
The NBA playoffs have always been dominated by the top few seeds. The format lends itself to very few upsets. You can have an off-shooting night or two and still advance. And it’s not like hockey/baseball where goaltending/starting pitching is the great equalizer. There’s hardly ever a year where more than 5-6 teams have a serious shot at the finals.

/Fixed.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:42 AM
48 games is over half of a regular NBA season. By then, the pecking order of a conference is usually pretty clear, and the playoffs were a normal format so it shouldn’t have an asterisk.
Who else was gonna win that year? It would have either been the Spurs, Indiana or Utah.
Also why isn’t there a bigger deal made that Tim Duncan was good enough to lead his team to a title in his second year? the dude is legendary.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:43 AM
Wow.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
Ok, not what i was arguing, but still, definitive statements like this will get you in trouble.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
I think it was more fluky in that the Knicks were not your normal 8 seed (esp. considering how weak the rest of the conference was). Back then a lineup of Camby, Sprewell, LJ, Houston, Kurt Thomas, and a gimpy Ewing was pretty formidable. I think they just took some time to put it together, and again the rest of the conference was weak.
I think Jackson’s smarmy ‘asterisk’ comment had more to do with the Bulls being broken up the year before than the shortened season. At the time it was unclear how great Duncan would actually become. In the rear view mirror things look different, much like the ’01 Patriots title with an unproven young QB and a no-name roster.

Wow. I didn’t know it was this bad.

Denver looks good, Boston looked tired. It’s Denver, so it’s not the first time a team has gone up in that altitude and blown their lunch at the end of the game. Also, don’t discount Boston being emotionally drainied from the Perkins thing. It’s also not the first time that a team has gotten off to a good start after a trade. Good for them, but they aren’t a better team without Anthony.
