This is Shaping Up as a Terrible NBA Draft, so Smart Teams Are Trading Away Draft Picks
The 2011 NBA draft is a weak one. There doesn’t appear to be a transcendent, franchise player in the mold of LeBron James (2003), Dwight Howard (2004), Kevin Durant (2007), Derrick Rose (2008) or Blake Griffin (2009). There is very little depth – if any – outside of the Top 10. It probably will be worse than the 2006 draft, a clunker that only produced Rajon Rondo, Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge and Rudy Gay. For this reason, a lot of NBA teams are unloading their 2011 draft picks.
The suddenly-rebuilding Jazz acquired the a Top 10 pick yesterday in the deal for Deron Williams. The Clippers gave away a Top 10 pick to the Cavs last night so they could clear cap room. The problem for these rebuilding teams? There really isn’t that much talent to draft.
Harrison Barnes opened the college basketball season as an All-American, and the likely No. 1 pick in the draft. Whether he’s struggling to adapt to the UNC system, or he’s just not as good as advertised, nobody thinks of him as the No. 1 pick anymore. Top 10? Maybe. But would it surprise you if Barnes – 13.5 ppg, 40 percent shooting – stayed in school and actually improved his game?
Right now, the players who would probably go in the Top 5 in the draft are:
Kyrie Irving, PG, Duke – Looks like a future star, but he’s only played eight college games. The transition from college to the pros is often difficult for point guards, which is why most stick around for a second year (Mike Conley didn’t, and he’s taken awhile to adjust to the pros). John Wall’s had a nice rookie campaign and Eric Bledsoe looks like a keeper. I’d guess Irving will go No. 1. If the Cavs somehow win the lottery, he’ll be their point guard of the future.
Derrick Williams, SF, Arizona - Incredibly athletic, 6-8, 240-pound sophomore who projects as a SF/PF tweener (these guys compared him to David West). With No. 1 picks you’re thinking franchise building block … it doesn’t appear (yet, anyway), that’s the case with Williams.
Perry Jones, SF/PF, Baylor – Wildly athletic, and talented as hell, but terribly raw offensively. Or maybe he’s just differing to the Baylor seniors? Love the potential, but if he jumps after a freshman campaign in which he’s frequently been in foul trouble and only blocked 22 shots in 27 games (he’s got an incredible wingspan, so that number is weak), I can see him struggling to find a position (he likes to float to the perimeter, but he’s only 1-for-8 shooting 3′s), and turning into a softer version of Tyrus Thomas.
Enes Kanter, C, Kentucky – More of a mystery than Irving because he’s never played a college game. But based on this performance, he looks like he has the potential to be a future stud. I’d love to see him face Ohio State’s Jared Sullinger in a workout. Remember when Joe Dumars drafted Darko 2nd overall? Well …
Jared Sullinger, PF, Ohio State – Having a great freshman campaign. The footwork, hands, and skill set all seem to be there already. If he stays four years, Ohio State should make at least a couple Final Fours. But is he undersized to play PF in the NBA? Do you think he can get his shot off against PFs like Pau Gasol, LaMarcus Aldridge and Amare? I’d say Sullinger could be a Zach Randolph-type player at his best (20-10).
Here’s where it gets scary – what if Irving decides to return to school, Jones thinks he wants a shot at thriving without the senior ball hogs, and Kanter stays at Kentucky (his Dad has said that, but everyone changes their mind).
Then you’re looking at a truly horrible draft, one where a team like the Jazz, with two picks in the Top 20, will be shit out of luck. Hell, the Cavaliers, who will have two top 10 picks, could wind up without much talent.

I had no idea you were a soothsayer, TBL. All drafts are crapshoots, especially the NBA draft. There are definitely no “LeBrons” in this draft, but none of us have an idea just how good or bad this draft class really is, yet.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
That’s an excellent comparison. My biggest concern about Sullinger is the fact that he averages a whopping 0.5 blocks per game which is terrible for a college C/PF. It speaks to length and athleticism.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
I think Terrence Jones might be a knucklehead, but the guy seems like a prototypical SF in the league. Guy should be really good.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
If Irving hadn’t gotten hurt, people would definitely be talking about him along the lines of Rose and Wall. His injury is what messed things up.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
Has anybody mentioned what ESPN has been pushing the past few days that a player can go straight to the NBA from HS, but if they go to college there would be a 3 year minimum requirement, similar to baseball?
February 24th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
I thought we were talking about the 2011 draft.
/Sully’s coming back suckas
February 24th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
perry could be a badass if he stayed at harvard on the brazos one more year and refined himself a bit more. but i doubt he will.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
Jets should draft him.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
Whoa. Whoa! WHOA! Someone’s missing from your Top 5.

February 24th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
I don’t think the draft is the problem, I think teams being stupid and drafting completely based on athleticism alone is the problem.
If I was a GM, I’d ask more questions to find out about a players mentality on and off the court. You can usually tell who’s going to be a keeper based on the work that they’re willing to put in and thier attitudes about winning.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
There are some pretty prettttayyyy good NBA players who played zero college games.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
This draft can’t be worse than the 2000 and 2001 NBA drafts. 2001 in particular was a disaster.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
How does Amare belong anywhere near that topic?
February 24th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
Irving does not have the athletic ability that Wall and Rose have. Still think he is a hell of a player but he does not have the unbelievable speed and jumping ability that Wall and Rose have.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
he’s heavier and just as tall as boozer and elton brand, but i don’t see his game translating all that well to the NBA.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
2000 was much worse, maybe worst ever. I love what the Bulls did with 5 of the top 34 picks. Should be a warning to any team stock-piling picks in a single draft for an immediate rebuilding.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
lol. Awesome.
2001 was pure crap. I remember 2002 being ass as well.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
Top 5 shot blocker according to the numbers. See, I don’t try to egg you guys on. You do it to yourselves.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
I would love to see Sullinger and Derrick Williams face each other in the tourney.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
Perry Jones would scare the shit out of me if I was a GM. Great Athlete, long arms and raw offensively. Sounds a lot like Tyrus Thomas except Jones does not block shots.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
His skill set is more comparable to Chris Paul’s.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
Unfortunately, I do remember this.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
I just hope the knicks make the playoffs…the shit talking will be amazing.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
If Irving goes pro he’s a moron.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:34 PM
Definitely. Tournament committee loves these types of matchups. Hopefully in the great 8.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
Why? He’s a guaranteed Top 3 pick in a “shitty” draft. How can he improve his stock?
February 24th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
trade deadline is at 6 eastern right?
/c’mon bulls
February 24th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
Why write a sentence like this? Psycho T is the only player who has stayed four years recently. No way sullinger playes 4 years.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
didnt know you were such a soothsayer
February 24th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
I think they make a move. I really think they do.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
/insert SC joke here
February 24th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
Why? I doubt he goes lower than 3rd as most teams at the top of the lottery will need a PG. And he’s by far the best at his position.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
Yeah. Kid’s stock can’t get any higher. Now, if you think he can get better without hurting said stock.. I can get down with that. But he’s a PG, even though its harder to adjust, he’ll have the time to. He’s not Hasheem Thabeet, who should have CLEARLY stayed in college if he cared about professional longevity.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
Kyrie Van Poppel is a very risky pick, methinks.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
Bucher was just on the radio here, mrejr. He basically ruled out all the names previous discussed, including Courtney Lee. Looks like we’re standing pat. I really don’t have a problem with that. I don’t want to trader Asik or Taj. They’re both young, Bulls are ahead of schedule as no one expected them to be where they are right now.
I’m glad Gar Forpax isn’t making a move just for the sake of making one. Lots of cap space and role players to be had in the offseason. Bulls are in great shape for the next 3-5.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
the trade deadline was less than 4 hours away about an hour ago (im guessing). my tv has been on espn and mute the whole morning
February 24th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
That’s great, not an indicator of one on one defense.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
Mocks, scouts, front offices all agree. He would have to fall out. This is pretty common knowledge that he’s going to be drafted pretty high.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
hopefully for a legit 2 guard..oh and i think atlanta picking up captain kirk is a underrated move
February 24th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
Touche. But seriously, he’s not going any lower than 3.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:39 PM

February 24th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
Oh please someone draft Terrence Jones top five. That would be high comedy.
/DeAndre Liggins may declare for draft because he now has a son
February 24th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
yeah i was just talkin shit..take it easy…knicks suck
February 24th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
I’m pretty sure the trade deadline is 3 PM EST, but as long as the teams have agreed in principle by that time, they can continue negotiations beyond the deadline.
I think.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
Still think Irving should stay in college. You play at Duke. Somehow I doubt your stock dropping lower than it is. Normally I’m all for kids coming out early, but more of the 1 and done kids have flopped than panned out. He’ll still get paid… plus if there’s a work stoppage this kid won’t have played meaningful basketball for well over a year by the time he steps on a floor.
Enjoy one year of full college hoops. He’ll be a top pick next season as well.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
It really is.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
I was thinking about this, and I think someone else has probably made the same analogy, but in NBA, we have 5 starting positions (and some are interchangeable). In NFL, we have 22 (plus special teamers). Thus, if someone is the 10th pick in basketball, that’s about like a mid-2nd round pick in the NFL once we account for the different starting numbers.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
Ok. I will. Bulls like the cawk.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:42 PM
i like draft picks but i’d prefer they get a proven player
February 24th, 2011 at 12:42 PM
Agree. If that dude could find his shot from 2006 again, he’s like a Redick that plays defense.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:42 PM
Sounds like the new Keith Van Horn.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:42 PM
Right now he’s a top five pick though. What if he gets hurt? Next years draft class is supposed to be loaded (shit, just looking at the kids UK has coming in that should be one-and-dones) and he might slip.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:43 PM
I think this possibility will keep quite a few of these kids in school for another year. Maybe college basketball will actually be watchable next year . . . probably not though.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:43 PM
No. Paperwork has to be in by 3, or no deal.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:43 PM
especially the one we use to fuck the knicks with over and over again
February 24th, 2011 at 12:43 PM
Also, Henry Abbott’s articles/obsession against proving Kobe isn’t clutch is bordering on insane.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:43 PM
I could see Washington taking him.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
That hasn’t been the trend lately for PGs. Points are becoming so valued lately. Especially if a team like Utah or Cleveland have a chance at the top pick in the draft. Like I said, it may be hard for PGs to adjust to the league, but they get the benefit of the doubt if they show they are capable. Kyrie not leaving would be dumb.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
This right here.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
Kanter needs to go to DC and ball with John Wall with one of their 1st round picks
February 24th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
This isn’t even snide, but how many kids does UK have coming in that aren’t one and dones?

True, but if the Cavs hit on two lottery picks (best case scenario) they have solidified 40% of their starting lineup for the next decade.

Nobody said he’s the cluthest of them all. Henry believes that Kobe isn’t clutch, PERIOD.
/ despite the fact that Bean lead a Lakers comeback with 5 minutes left to go and sent the game to OT
February 24th, 2011 at 12:48 PM
That’s the biggest if I’ve ever seen written on this site.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:48 PM
Also, as far as Irving is concerned… you really think Coach K is going to advocate going pro? I think his factor in that decision has a lot more gravity than we’re considering.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:49 PM
Yum
February 24th, 2011 at 12:49 PM
Tank Abbott > Henry Abbott
Tank Abbott > Kobe
February 24th, 2011 at 12:50 PM
And his criteria of “clutch” (24 seconds) is fucking stupid. Not just for Kobe, but for any top performer who scores a ton down the stretch.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:50 PM
i almost spit my coffee out…i really hope guys make the playoffs
February 24th, 2011 at 12:50 PM
Agreed. Dude is not an injury risk at all.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:50 PM
IIRC Coach K told Elton Brand to go pro.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:51 PM
that would be awesome
February 24th, 2011 at 12:51 PM
have some fucking professionalism…if someone’s willing to pay you millions upon millions of dollars, shut the fuck up about where it is.
jesus fucking christ…being athletic and tall does not give you the keys to the universe.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:52 PM
Hinrich hasn’t had a shot in 5 years…good luck bringing that back ATL. Wiz made off nicely, Jordan Crawford (kid who dunked on LBJ) is a legit baller, remember this shot from the game vs. KSU in NCAAs last year???
February 24th, 2011 at 12:52 PM
I’ll agree with you on this. Plus, Duke is going to be straight up stupid next year. But still… as a point, the need to stay in school isn’t THAT great that it would put your pro future in jeopardy. Look at how many one and done PGs that were labeled as can’t miss are starting right now in the league.

This made me laugh. From the Dutch freak article: The tallest major leaguer in history is Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jon Rauch(notes) at 6-11. Mets pitcher Chris Young and retired pitchers Randy Johnson(notes) and Eric Hillman are 6-10. A common denominator is that all were late bloomers, none of them harnessing their ability before age 26. That’s how old van Mil is now.
Weren’t all of those guys in the majors not harnessing their talent before 26yo? This guy hasn’t even gotten to the point where he’s a shitty major leaguer yet

So if it’s a crummy draft, doesn’t it behoove a team looking for young talent to have plenty of chances at maybe landing a keeper/star in the making?
I agree that there isn’t a Durant or a LeBron that’s instantly recognizable, but let’s remember that players often arise from the Tournament.
