no link to the mo willims/baron davis trade?
/good riddance no sho mo.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:28 AM
Worst possible pic of Cheryl Cole, ever.
And good riddance to Mo Panic. Great regular season contributor who pissed down his leg each and every playoff series.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:29 AM
The last video is impressive, but the dude seems like a total douchebag.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:30 AM
Whatever happened to the new age of civility? Oh wait, that was only to censor opposition to the left. Carry on my wayward sons.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:31 AM
Who’s Nick Schrank?
February 24th, 2011 at 8:32 AM
The sports writers are almost as bad as the teams that currently play in cleveland

waaaahhh lebron left. i want to retire. i can’t play basketball any more. waaaahhh
February 24th, 2011 at 8:33 AM
Daily Show had a great segment showing where Fox News had called Tea Party protestors great Americans, but Wisconsin protestors crazies.. then showed where MSNBC called Tea Partiers crazies and Wisconsin protestors great Americans. Lesson is, as always, both extremes suck.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:35 AM
Not following the link? I thought those signs were sometimes clever, funny, and sometimes predictable. But definitely not uncivil.
But you have a war to fight, I understand.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:35 AM
The lesson is: don’t ever watch cable news, but specifically MSNBC and Fox.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:36 AM
oh my god, wtf? bjorn’s been around forever and isn’t an unknown at all.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:36 AM
the second #1s clip is awesome
February 24th, 2011 at 8:36 AM
I still like the Reds to win the NL Central. Deep pitching plus the expected Jay Bruce 40 HR season.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:37 AM
Husker has been bringing his A-game for weeks now.

February 24th, 2011 at 8:37 AM
The other night I had a look at CNN’s evening lineup on my cable guide thing. Holy shit does their programming suck. I mean, it’s mostly sanitized, harmless suck unlike those other two. But still awful.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:38 AM
Did you even look at the posters? Nothing uncivil about them.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:39 AM
Haven’t clicked the protester link…are the wi protestors walking around with teabags hanging from their hats while holding a sign calling the gov of Wisconsin a Nazi communist Muslim from kenya?
February 24th, 2011 at 8:39 AM
I’m trying to figure out where I want to see AJ Green land. I don’t want Carolina for sure. After that, I don’t see Buf or Den taking him, so it comes down Cincy or Cleveland. I think I’d much rather him to go to Cleveland.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:40 AM
Mo leaving is probably best for the franchise’s future, but jesus christ, why shit on one of the few athletes who actually enjoyed living and playing in Cleveland while he’s on his way out the door?
February 24th, 2011 at 8:40 AM
Whose version of the truth would you like?
February 24th, 2011 at 8:40 AM
obviously…occupied kentucky is no place to raise a family.

You guys see Bel, Biv, Devoe on Fallon last night, badass!

Yeah especially the one with talking about peace. That was totally uncivil
February 24th, 2011 at 8:42 AM
he made $8 million per year…im sure even mississippi would be enjoyable with that kind of bankroll.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:42 AM
CNN is so painful to watch. They see that both the left and the right have a channel, so they try so hard to be the hip, cool channel of non-opinions. If they would just go to straight news, rather than iReports, twitter feed updates and shit like that, maybe they wouldn’t be so bad. Cooper is pretty good, but after that it’s all bad over there. They try so hard to not go either way, but at the same time compete with crazies on the left and the right.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:42 AM
I thought that politics were a Friday Roundup Discussion? Come on, both sides are bought and paid for whether its unions, Koch, API, Soros, nothing we can do.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:42 AM
I’m just going by the placards I’ve seen online from the cartel protest. Sorry, if I didn’t flip through the clever ones from that link. And what war am I fighting?
February 24th, 2011 at 8:43 AM
That jumping dude was impressive but I have a feeling that we wouldn’t get along.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:44 AM
how pissed is baron having to go from LA to fucking cleveland? bwahahaha!
February 24th, 2011 at 8:45 AM
This is all kinds of awesome
February 24th, 2011 at 8:45 AM
Come on, both sides are bought and paid for whether its unions, Koch, API, Soros, nothing we can do.
While both sides are somewhat bought and paid for, the argument that Govt workers are overpaid is just retarded.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:46 AM
but jesus christ, why shit on one of the few athletes who actually enjoyed living and playing in Cleveland while he’s on his way out the door?
who cares if he likes the city or not. what’s he done for the franchise?
February 24th, 2011 at 8:47 AM
please TBL, tell me this is written in bold sarcasm font…
Also, when will dumb ADs stop giving POS Tim Floyd coaching jobs? Life imitating art, Pete Bell, Western Univerity…
February 24th, 2011 at 8:48 AM
So awesome. I don’t watch Fallon, but the few times I’ve heard him interviewed, he seems like a nice dude. I know a lot of people rip his stuff, but I can’t really comment on that.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:49 AM
I actually clicked your link to “America’s 12 Step Program”. I think I have a fairly good idea of your perspective on things. So when you made a comment about those signs without (obviously) having actually clicked the link, it was clear to me it was about your politics.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:50 AM
I’m 29 so it’s a Top 5 song for me. It pretty much laid the foundation to not trust deez hoes. Haha!
February 24th, 2011 at 8:51 AM
The same thing Josh Cribbs, Joe Thomas, Bernie Kosar, and every other beloved athlete have done for the franchise: lose.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:52 AM
SO when will the Wonderlic test results get leaked out?
February 24th, 2011 at 8:52 AM
And yup, Poison will now be stuck in my head all day. Its driving me out of my mind…..
February 24th, 2011 at 8:52 AM
Exactly. The guy was great on Top Chef too.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:52 AM
Depends on the position. Public workers in non-professional jobs – those generally not requiring a bachelors degree – get paid at least as well as those in the private sector performing the same job on average. Up to you to decide whether or not that is actually a problem.
In the “professional” jobs, public workers make anywhere from 10%-25% less, on average. The difference is greater the further you go up the education ladder. Pensions help make up for some of that.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:53 AM
Never trust a big butt and a smile.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:54 AM
i have not heard of Thomas Bjorn. Sorry.
Bjorn Borg, the tennis player, is a name I recognize.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:54 AM
Me too, specifically this clip
February 24th, 2011 at 8:54 AM
big win for the Razorbacks over Kentucky last night. first win in 10 years over them, which is pretty embarrassing. that game used to be on in the early afternoon on super bowl sunday on national tv. now it is on a wednesday in february on the SEC network in front of a 2/3 filled arena.
/fire Pelphrey
February 24th, 2011 at 8:55 AM
And all of that is sort of a side point to the issue of whether labor has the right to organize and bargain collectively with their employer.
The public unions in Wisconsin had already agreed to an 8% pay cut. It’s the proposed gutting of their rights to collectively bargain that has them protesting. (as it should, IMO).
February 24th, 2011 at 8:55 AM
don’t you guys have BBD on your ipod?
February 24th, 2011 at 8:56 AM
that was awesome.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:56 AM
Ummm….oh you mean Bel Biv Devoe….move along here people.
As true today as it was back then.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:57 AM
i don’t expect you to follow golfers and everything, but a simple wiki search would’ve shown a pretty good career. 11 wins, 3 major runner ups…recently re-found his game.
he’s not a superstar, he’s just not “some guy” tho…just won one of the most loaded tournaments so far this year in qatar.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:57 AM
I do, but it’s cool to see them live. He reminds me of when hip hop was good.
This is true. The fact that they agreed to the cuts proves this has less to do about the budget and more to do with gutting unions.
February 24th, 2011 at 8:58 AM
hopefully very soon. anybody want to hazard a guess at Cam’s score? I would probably go with a 17.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:00 AM
SD
I really have no issue with the “protestor’s” fighting for cbr. They know if they give up an 8% cut now, they will get that back and more once Walker is out of there. I object to the exploitation of kids and the whole “its for the students” bullshit. How bout they ask for competition and incentive in their field? Drop tenure too.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:01 AM
this is true. it depresses me to see how much my bosses make with 20-30 years of experience compared to what a similar private sector job with the same requirements would pay. although, the big sticking point is the stability of government jobs vs. private sector. personally, I think the stability is worth a minimum of 10-15%.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:01 AM
He’ll shock the world and bust out a 21.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:03 AM
shock the world indeed. 21 is quite ambitious.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:05 AM
I’d like to take a real Wonderlic and see how I’d do. I know Stafford tore his up, as did Brady. I assume Sanchez did okay, too, but I’m not sure.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:05 AM
21? I’m guessing 12.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:05 AM
I’m paying for staying up to watch Fallon last night, but it was soooo worth it.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:05 AM
Only a matter of time before the Philly mob story is made into a movie. One of the best articles I have read this year.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:07 AM
search around online and there’s a few places that offer mini-tests where you can kinda extrapolate how you’d score on a real one.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:07 AM
Tell you what…
Teachers unions can keep their collective bargaining, but they have to change language so it is easier to remove the piss poor teachers from schools. In return, public school teachers get better salaries, bu have to pay a little more toward their pension/401k/health insurance.
/Goliath the consensus builder’d
February 24th, 2011 at 9:07 AM
That’s just politics. Both sides play it. It has nothing to do with the root of the issue. That shit is for O’Reilly and Olbermann to complain about. If you do it too they are winning.
Lots of think tanks, both in public and private sector, are hammering out ideas to improve public education. It’s not simple. And the unions are trying to protect jobs, which is their job.
I think you’d be surprised (or not) how many teachers support modifying tenure policies. Good teachers do not like to watch students they’ve helped educate get screwed by shitty teachers who are lazy and have jobs for life anyway.
There are a few cities that have been trying new programs for a few years now, to varying degrees of success.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:07 AM
I don’t think he’s outright retarded like Vince Young. 21 may be high, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see him pull that score. I really wouldn’t.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:08 AM
Except when talking about local budgets that have to deal with the many times expensive agreements that are made at the state level through CB.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:08 AM
Did McElroy take it? I’m sure he did quite well. That dude is real sharp.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:08 AM
Now, if Fallon can figure out a Guy reunion, I’m sold.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:09 AM

Winner.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:09 AM
I’ve done that and scored well, but I want a real one.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:10 AM
I don’t really care, one way or the other, about this movie getting made, but you’d think Affleck would have a little empathy for Kekich not wanting this movie made after what he (Affleck) has gone through in the tabloids and the whining he’s done about it over the years.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:11 AM
Snachez scored a 28, Stafford a 38.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:13 AM
Are these results public for everyone now? If not, are they being leaked by their agents (if the results are decent)? And if the results suck, who is leaking them?
February 24th, 2011 at 9:13 AM
Get Shai on TV. These dudes could sing. I remember my older brother’s girlfriends losing their minds when this song was being played:

wasn’t he up for the rhodes scholarship?
February 24th, 2011 at 9:13 AM
Wisconsin was lucky (obviously) to pull that game out. Bo Ryan’s offense at the end of close games is hard to stomach. Also see: the Michigan St. game.
Cincinnati all but punched their ticket to the dance.

February 24th, 2011 at 9:15 AM
Cincinnati all but punched their ticket to the dance.
Bad, bad loss for G’town but the real problem is Wright and his broken hand. They are done without him.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:15 AM
Now I’m especially mad at myself for not seeing the Rob Bass, BBD, Salt N Pepa concert at Taste of Chicago last year.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:15 AM
Bo Ryan’s offense is hard to stomach
fix’d
February 24th, 2011 at 9:16 AM
We should really be comparing Sanchez’s scores to JaMarcus Russell’s right?
/ducks
February 24th, 2011 at 9:17 AM
The other problem is that SHOCKINGLY Walker’s bill doesn’t call for stripping CB rights from the unions that supported his campaign…there’s nothing noble or tough-minded about what he’s proposing here, it’s just politics as usual and he’s trying to capitalize on a crisis as they are wont to do
The last six seconds were the only bit of entertaining basketball and even then it ended on a shot that was so horrible off target that it got a lucky bounce
Took the Wonderlic for a job interview once, scored the upper 30s (for whatever reason they wouldn’t give me the exact number)…the time is the biggest issue, left the last 5-6 blank if memory serves
February 24th, 2011 at 9:17 AM
fuck wisconsin.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:18 AM

February 24th, 2011 at 9:18 AM
I heard Sanchez scored a 17
/Veal
February 24th, 2011 at 9:18 AM
I don’t know how the bad ones get leaked, but I’m sure the players and the agents are glad to talk about the good scores.
That dude is going to be a coach or a broadcaster when he’s done. He’s borderline brilliant. Seems like a cool guy, too.

Fuck you Floyd – the refs gave you every opportunity to back off. You can repeatedly see the refs warning Floyd to “back off” and signaling him to calm down. You got more than your money’s worth.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:20 AM
The ref in the Floyd ejection was egging that whole thing on. The cop was unnecessary.

February 24th, 2011 at 9:21 AM
Miz, I took a sample quiz and it was 10 questions in 3 minutes or something like that. I got a 30. Felt pretty good, until I saw five people who took it get higher than me.

Yeah…the time is always the issue. You need to be able to make quick decisions. That’s the point of it I believe. Quick, smart choices.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:22 AM
So, I see Bieber now looks more like a lesbian woman. Nice look.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:22 AM

I love the Roots. Such an awesome band. I wonder why they decided to do Jimmy’s show… maybe they don’t like touring?
This video is the best. They even have the 90′s dance moves!!
February 24th, 2011 at 9:23 AM
Did you see the picture he took with his new lover?
February 24th, 2011 at 9:23 AM
Yeah, there’s enough nonsense going on leading up to the draft that it’s not hard to find someone with the motivation to leak someone’s score for their own gain. It’s just that it is talked about so much now I wasn’t sure if the whole thing was just public now.

They play shows in the north east like whoa. Always have. Plus, being able to play a late night show for a band like them is awesome for their profile. I still can’t believe Fallon’s show got them though. Just such an awesome idea. I still bug out to when they did straight out of compton with Ice Cube.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:26 AM
exactly. supposedly he got something in the teens (16 maybe?) and that was the RETAKE…scored in the single digits on the first one.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:27 AM
Considering they toured for ten years straight prior to starting Jimmy’s show, I can understand. And I share your love of the Roots. Illadelphia Halflife is one of my fave albums.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:27 AM
He really is a complete idiot.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:28 AM
That was the shit. I need to watch Fallon more often.
I’m pissed at this audience though… why the fuck aren’t they singing along? If you’re between the ages of 28-35 don’t you know every word to these songs?

You have to be a functional retard to only score a 6…they’re just word problems, not calculus
February 24th, 2011 at 9:31 AM
I think it has more to do with his laziness. He simply didn’t care about the test and figured the athlete in him would prevail. Hell, he was drafted 3rd overall, so he was probably right. I bet 16 is more likely what he would have scored the first time had he really cared about it. He’s just an arrogant little child in a massive man’s body.

Yeah… brutal game. They’re just a completely different team on the road. You can’t eek out wins at Iowa and Michigan and expect to go deep in the tourney… and yet they still have a shot at the Big10 regular season title. Bo gets it done. Every year.

If a teacher gets shitty reviews, he/she will lose their job. It happens all the time. Even to teachers with tenure. Now, some districts need to revise their review process for tenured staff. Each district is different. Some will have the principal/assistant principal in the classroom up to 10 times a year. Some teachers only get reviewed every other year.
But ALL teachers should be required to go through the national certification process. If you do that, you care about teaching. That shit is CRAZY.

I don’t get how what Smith was saying relates to your link. Smith is simply being honest with people. The real reason behind this bill has far less to do with the budget than they are claiming. It’s all about busting unions as a way of busting the democratic party. I’m not saying they shouldn’t try it. It’s a genius move by the Right, and one that should be applauded from a political strategy aspect. But don’t kid yourself into thinking it’s something else.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:41 AM
The other problem is that SHOCKINGLY Walker’s bill doesn’t call for stripping CB rights from the unions that supported his campaign…there’s nothing noble or tough-minded about what he’s proposing here, it’s just politics as usual and he’s trying to capitalize on a crisis as they are wont to do
I’m really getting sick of this story. Both sides are skewing the real facts in their favor, and both sides have plenty of idiots to go around and make WI look dumb. My Facebook feed is filled with various political opinions from my “friends” back home. I don’t care about YOUR political opinions. Has a single person’s mind been changed on this issue? No. People are so set in their ways, it just becomes a shouting match. Politics is just what people with nothing else interesting to say default to “talking” (arguing) about.

80s music > 90s music

February 24th, 2011 at 9:44 AM
is that on youtube anywhere? Ice Cube before he turned into a total hollywood pussy was awesome.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:45 AM

February 24th, 2011 at 9:47 AM
Politics is narcissism in its purest form: I’m RIGHT, you’re WRONG.
As for the teachers… I have a lot of respect for some of them. Some of them have extremely tough jobs. But I think they overplay the “I work more than you do during the school year” card a little too much. You can’t just ignore all of the days off they get during the year. I think 40K a year with the summer months off (or taking another job and thus getting more money) is a sweet gig.
I look at them as sort of like head coaches. They get too much blame when things go bad, and too much credit when things go well. We’re never going to fix problems with schools until we fix problems in the kids homes, and sadly, I don’t think that will ever happen.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:47 AM
All of this, hair bands are fun in a campy sort of way but it’s not actually good in this guy’s opinion
I dunno, this shit’s pretty important

February 24th, 2011 at 9:48 AM
Baron Davis for Mo Williams? Not sure why Cleveland is making this trade.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:48 AM
I love me some 80s music.
I think it’s certainly shady, but looking at this from a straight-up political strategy maneuver, I think it’s genius. Use the BS line about doing this for the budget so that you win an entire side right off of the bat and try hard to build up a narrative of fiscal accountability. The only problem with this plan was it was fairly obvious what they were really doing. They needed to cut some other unions from the Right to have that argument dulled a bit, but they weren’t smart enough/ballsy enough to do so.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:49 AM
you know there was other music going on in the 80′s other than poison and ratt, right?
February 24th, 2011 at 9:49 AM
did you see the 1st rounder included?
February 24th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
They also know what they’re getting into well ahead of time. If they wanted to make more money, they should have chosen a different field.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
Stealing my thunder.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
I think U2 sucks too
February 24th, 2011 at 9:51 AM
Teacher’s don’t get as much time off as people think. Most teachers are required to do in-service during the summer in order to keep their certification. So, that 8 weeks they get off is closer to 4. On top of that, a lot of those 4 weeks are spent developing lesson plans etc.
And teachers BUST THEIR ASSES during the school year (unless you teach gym or social studies). When I was teaching, I regularly worked 60-70 hour weeks, and there are a lot of teachers that were working more than I was.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:51 AM
Yeah, but this is just not a great draft. I think you’ll see a few more teams trade their first rounders as well.
Davis is going to go back on cruise control in Cleveland.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:51 AM
Hakeem played a joke on me. He’s a bad bad man.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:51 AM
Pretty sure that just means that you are old.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:51 AM
Teachers are probably the most important profession in society, yet we treat them like shit a lot of the time. As someone stated above, fixing our education system is a total bitch. It isn’t like people aren’t trying. Yes, teacher accountability needs to be jacked up, but by what metric? Test scores alone makes no sense, but that is the easy way of looking at it so that is what most people say we should do.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:52 AM
FUCK YEAH THEY DO
February 24th, 2011 at 9:52 AM
I dunno, this shit’s pretty important
Probably. But the protests mean nothing. It’s just noise. From everything Walker’s said, there won’t be compromise. He doesn’t have to negotiate, so why would he? He had the National Guard touring the state prisons in case the correctional officers go on strike. The guy isn’t backing down. I’m not saying I’m on his side, as I think he’s just another political douche, but the democrats fleeing the state and all of this “hey lets protest — it’ll be like Egypt!” shit just looks dumb — because it doesn’t matter in the end.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:53 AM
this is right on.
however, i also think it’s kind of ironic that many of the people who think teachers and public workers should share in their misery of the recession and take wage cuts or layoffs, yet they don’t want to share their own personal financial successes with anyone else once they have them.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:53 AM

February 24th, 2011 at 9:54 AM
the 80′s was a great time for music. michael jackson was fucking incredible, you had van halen when they cared, talking heads, peter gabriel, metallica, the jazz neoclassic movement, the minimalist movement…
the 80′s was a period of musical growth. the 90′s was a massive, massive regression.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:54 AM
Davis’ contract is shitty, but they are probably going to have two lottery picks now. That’s HUGE for a team trying to rebuild.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:54 AM
Yeah, they traded a bad contract for an even worse contract. They got less flexible just to get another lottery pick. I mean, I could see why you would do this, but it is a pretty weird gamble. You have to absolutely nail that pick to justify this trade whatsoever.
February 24th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
damnit…and here i thought we had a chance at 20 wins.
who cares? the cavs weren’t winning with mo, they’re not gonna win with b-diddy…it’s a negligble trade and they got an extra first rounder.

They also know what they’re getting into well ahead of time. If they wanted to make more money, they should have chosen a different field.
Yeah… my thoughts exactly. Look I get it… it’s a tough job. Much respect. But it would sort of be like a fireman bitching that he has to work holidays/nights, etc. That’s what he signed up for.

Sadly, I’m of the belief that “democracy” really doesn’t exist anymore. It’s the side with the most money/corporate influence that wins. I think the fact that we still allow tobacco companies to produce cancer in a box is pretty damning evidence of this.

You can’t really “overpay” for perennial all star players, because they all command max money. Their current team is able to pay them more than anyone else. So, which top 20 player is going to take less money to come to Cleveland?

Why do teachers get this special treatment, like it’s some noble and impossible job to get? Teachers are just like every other profession in that there is a bell curve of talent: some are brilliant, some are dopes, and a majority are in the middle making a living hoping to get paid and go home. Can’t say CBA is a necessity and the compensation is inadequate – the job is only 9 months. Get off the high horse, government workers.

Spend your time winning some games and stop worrying about your image. This country is getting its ass handed to them by countries with better infrastructure, better schools, better healthcare and a better economy, yet we just want to make sure that President puffs his chest out, wipes our ass and tells us how great we are.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:13 AM
Exactly. You are never going to get them to cut it down to 1-2 terms, but 3 terms would be a start. I think 1 term is not enough time. 2 terms would be perfect. 12 years for the senate (and assuming house terms are at 4 years) give them 3 terms for 12 years. 18 years is too much for the Senate now that I think about it.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:13 AM

True.
It is 10 months not 9. And during those 10 months, most teachers are only allowed 3-4 personal days to take off, but even those can’t be near a holiday or break. Compensation varies all over the place. Most coastal metro areas are well paid, while in most southern and flyover states teacher salaries are a joke.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:20 AM
I wouldn’t call grunge a major musical movement. Grunge was basically getting back to the “garage” sound that happened in the 70s. Some would say the growth of hip-hop in the 90s might be a movement, but that was born on the explosion of rappers in the 80s. I’m not sure what you would call a “major” movement. But to say that music had no progression is a very short sighted thing to say. Music always evolves and devolves.

I have no credentials, am not informed, have zero idea what makes a song fun to listen to, but goddamn if Stephan Jenkins and 3EB didn’t put out one hell of debut album.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
fuck you…i love how i get bashed for trying to bring some insight to a debate. i list off a bunch of things the 80′s were great for and just get called a douchebag because i think the 90′s sucked and explain myself?
February 24th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
Bingo. We’re quickly becoming Rome and we’re fiddling our thumbs. We have a worse GINI index than Egypt (look it up, I’m too lazy to do links at work). More inequality = eventual civil unrest and an eventual revoltion. I’ve read this book before numerous times: Rome, Britain in 1640, France, Egypt. We gotta wake the fuck up.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
There are certain drawbacks. No doubt about that. I think cutting the funding of politicians would be the best course of action, but the likelihood of that happening is almost nil.

-He was acquired via trade, so my argument holds up.
-He wasn’t an “all-star” until he came to Cleveland
-He only got in because two other guys were injured.
-You could make a strong argument that he was not deserving.

If you are going to besmirch the good name of the Backstreet Boys than we are going to have words.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
Settle down. Really I’m just demonstrating that any conversation about music is an exercise in futility. “I listen to music better than you!” “Nuh uh!” “Yah huh!” Repeat for 20 minutes. Spare me.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
No, you just have to discuss it like everybody else, not like a music major. We get that you love classical music and jazz and all that stuff, but when discussing 80s music versus 90s music, none of that really matters.

February 24th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
Yes. I don’t understand why anyone would argue in favor of term limits on the grounds that money has ruined our democracy, but argue against limited, public funding of campaigns.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
Funding and lobbyists are a whole different issue which will never be changed, unfortunately. Who doesn’t like free money?
February 24th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
i really should just stop talking music all together here…probably for the better.
Please don’t, your rants are entertaining and I find myself heading to youtube to check out some of the stuff you mention.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
You should probably read my bullet point directly below that, homeslice.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
the 80′s was a period of musical growth. the 90′s was a massive, massive regression
couldnt disagree more with the second part of that statement. the 90s had grunge obviously, but also started alt rock, gangster rap, nu metal to name a few. yes, some of the bands that came out of those categories sucked, but the 90s had a lot of experimentation and diversity going on musically. 80s to me was fairly limited, and very top heavy with its contributions.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
Funny, I think arguing over music is almost as silly as trying to change someone’s political opinion. Isn’t musical taste just an opinion? If it sounds good to you, it sounds good to you.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:28 AM

February 24th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
Spencer, let’s face facts here. You’re a snob when it comes to musical discussions. Of COURSE you don’t like Ace of Base or Bell Biv Devoe or any other band that had some hits in the 90′s. I don’t give a flying fuck about a band’s influence on the musical community or the relative musical ability of a pop band. I like to listen to stuff that has a good beat and, at times, makes me nostalgic.
In other words, take your fucking bullshit music degree, fill it with a bunch of weed, roll it up, and smoke it while you listen to the music known by only 5% of the world’s population.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
I wish ms was here to shed some historical insight, but there are significant differences between the US and the empires you mentioned. First and foremost, as corrupt and twisted as it may seem, we do still live in a democracy where the President has a 2 term limit. The four you mentioned had lifetime rulers. The other major difference is the aspect of capitalism, which will keep the US viable on the world market.
Long term, I think country borders are going to matter less and less, and you will have the US on the same level as the other world leaders.

Any reason we need a $550 billion yearly defense budget?
Raising the income threshold for Social Security + Medicare taxes (it should be much higher than only being taxed at $106,000, at least $1 million)
Raise the Social Security age for anyone born after 1980 to 70.
Establish more tax brackets – $100k – $300k, $300k-$700k, $700k-$2m, $2m-$5m and $5m and then you don’t have the right going crazy for tax cuts.
Boom, I’ll be here all week.

February 24th, 2011 at 10:30 AM
Despite the Chuck Klostermans of the world, music can not be shoved into a competitive context and be discussed in terms of “good” “better” and “bad” as you would sports. What you consider to be irrefutable facts for whatever reason are still subjective by nature. There is “skilled” “talented” and “intelligent” obviously, but you get what you have coming to you if you’re going to be enough of a snob to discuss things strictly as “rocks” and “sucks.”
February 24th, 2011 at 10:30 AM
Politicians are primarily influenced by money coming at them through two channels. One is funding of their campaign coffers. The other is money offered to them after they leave public service.
You can’t really tell someone who they can and can’t work for after government. But you can definitely limit the money coming in the front end.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
LOL. Jersey this is why you are my boy 4 life, nWo style.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
all of which, may i add, were heavily influenced by what happened in the 80′s in those respective genres.
you could make the same argument about 70s influencing the 80s, etc.
some of us like to have discussions about music not recommended by ryan seacrest, dammit
February 24th, 2011 at 10:32 AM

February 24th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
Any reason we need a $550 billion yearly defense budget?
Politicians. I cringe to think about what we spend on the NAVY alone. Is there really a need to have a NAVY that is literally 100000 times bigger/better than the nearest “competitor?” Wouldn’t just being 100 times as good suffice?
February 24th, 2011 at 10:33 AM

February 24th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
On term limits:
I’d vote (insert someone you disagree with) to office if the only thing they got accomplished would be term limits.
US Senate (2 terms) and US House (6 terms). 12 years in either body of the Legislature.
And am I the only one that thinks we ought to have limits on the Supreme Court service? Somewhere around 24 years or so?
February 24th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
Why the 80s sucked: hair bands and synth pop getting more fame than indie rock.
Why the 90s sucked: boy bands, more teen girl slut pop, and generic rock (but that is a cancer at all times)
I’m a huge music snob and proud, but am totally willing to admit the good parts of every decade and genre (except death metal which sucks ass from top to bottom)
/i actually have something in common with spence. Yikes

February 24th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
You’re focussing on the wrong part of what I said. I meant that when debating musical tastes, you are gonna get bashed when you start to talk about it academically.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
Flat Tax is hugely regressive. Say you have a 10% flat tax, so the person making 30,000 pays 3,000 of the AGI, while someone making 300k pays 30k. With gas about to hit $4 and food prices rising, the 30k person is going to have less disposable income. Good in theory, terrible in practice.

The country needs a monetary policy and somebody regulating the banking system. Pretending it doesn’t ignores history.
The country needs an energy policy.
The country may not need to Department of Education. But having no federal funding for higher education is a pretty shitty way to prepare the country for the future.
Agriculture is something I know nothing about.
The progressive tax system is this country is one of the building blocks for a person’s ability to be self-made. The tax code is way too complicated, though. Agree with that.

February 24th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
That’s a good point philly. I would propose people making below a certain amount be exempt from that. However, I am totally for simplifying the tax code. There is no reason why only the rich can get away with getting around it. While the middle class get screwed.

February 24th, 2011 at 10:43 AM

People won’t go for the jump on Social Security retirement age. I like where your head’s at, though…
Everybody currently over the age of, say, 50, can still retire at 65 and get full benefits. Every between 35 and 49 must wait until they are 67. 34 and younger? 70. Of course, I’d be willing to break it down even further. Maybe jack the retirement age up just one year for a group of folks at a time, that way society gets a chance to adjust.

the next decade will be better…the music industry is losing their control over what artists produce and we’ll be better off for it.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
If music is an opinion, I think you meant subjective.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
There is the problem of actually finding the good music, though. That problem already exists and seems like it will just get worse. Everybody can publish their music, which is good. But sorting through it all is hopeless. It’s sort of a mess.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
i don’t even smoke pot, but it’s a completely politicized issue when everyone ignores how much sense it makes.
and the money saved on prosecuting marijuana offenses can be prioritized to the harder drugs, like cocaine and heroine. but not meth, otherwise, it would put too much of a downer for Heisenberg’s operation.

Speaking of legalizing pot, can we get around to legalizing sports gambling already?
February 24th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
I think we can agree on this.
And I also support legalizing and taxing weed. Lots of revenue to be raised that way.
I know, but it’s something I think would be good. I’m born in 82, and I don’t plan on retiring until I’m close to 72.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
I put it at 30 and call it a day.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
remember when napster first came out? that was the best…you had the rigid structure of the music industry, which sorted the crap out for you, but you weren’t at the mercy of having to shell out $18 a CD to hear the three songs you wanted to.
industry provides quality control but hindered the artist’s control over their work.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
Not sure there was enough progression.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
don’t even raise the age, just exempt every worker born after 2012 from contributing to social security and allow a graduated reduction in SS contributions from those who will never actually get it, so they can invest their contributions however they want, with emphasis on putting into bonds and US held stocks.
this way social security is phased out gradually but not too suddenly for the public to adjust.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
Watson, those were two different ideas.
What you like is subjective.
A band’s quality can be measured objectively.
In sports, one may like the Bills (subjective) but it can be measured that they suck at football right now (objective)
/self-loathing about bills

So true. But now you can check out a band on you tube or something. At least you have access to hear a band now. 15 years ago, you heard a song on the radio, liked it, bought the album. And then the album fucking sucked. I still have a cd by The Nixons.

And am I the only one that thinks we ought to have limits on the Supreme Court service? Somewhere around 24 years or so?

Just a little something the boys in R&D have been kicking around. Just the idea of a “lifetime appointment” to anything where there can be THAT much influence or impact on the country is kinda crazy. I kinda pulled 24 out of my ass. I figure if the Senate and House are getting 12 years apiece in my governmental utopia, maybe give the Supreme Court twice as long?
It’s just a thought. Not too high on the priority list for me. I’d rather term limits for everyone else first.

this is one thing I have never understood. people that are against legalizing seem to always look by this point and go straight to the “WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN!!!!” or the classic “GATEWAY DRUG!!!!” argument without actually thinking about stuff like jail over population or the fucked state of our economy and how something like legalization would not only help these issues, but also help at least slightly control the “little problem” that is going on south of the border on a daily basis.

i do think it’s reasonable to create a cutoff for people contributing to SS. say, people born after 2020 do not have to contribute to SS, however, by 2035-36 when they become old enough to start working, there are private accounts with a guaranteed interest rate, say 4%, their share of SS will be contributed to and it can’t be withdrawn until 65. those who are projected to take SS after the funds are withdrawn and have been contributing are able to contribute to their own account with say a 15% interest rate.
it’s not perfect, and i’m no economist, but i have a hard time believing there’s no viable solution to gradually ending social security in the future.
February 24th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
Having listened to both underground and mainstream (in extremes) at one point or another, let me just say that this isn’t true. Lil Wayne has some good stuff, as do underground artists like Atmosphere or Sage. To say that one is better than the other is stupid. I’ve heard plenty of stuff from underground artists who are popular that REALLY really really suck.

80′s music for some…miniature American flags for others!
Along with pot I believe prostitution should be made legal, we’d tax the whores same as any other independent contractor if they’re working solo or set up legitimate business brothels across the nation like the Bunny Ranch

I fucking LOVE editing. I love my job and enjoy coming to work everyday. As far as moving up, it depends on what branch of Editorial work you get into. In Educational Publishing, you won’t get a job any where unless you have a some freelance work under your belt. I freelanced while I was still teaching, then I got hired at a small development house. I put in a few years there before jumping to a big publisher. Luckily, this publisher makes a few different grammar textbooks, and that is my specialty. This allowed me to advance pretty quickly. But once you work at an actual publishing company, the pay is pretty decent. Working at a development house . . . not so much. But you got to get the experience somewhere.

I don’t know, but when you find out, please let me know.

I used to be a huge Atmosphere fan when I was younger (around 14-15) and listened to underground rap religiously.
I remember buying an Atmosphere record (the one that has Trying to Find A Balance) on it, and the girl at the counter couldn’t help letting out a snort (likely cause she’d never heard of Atmo).
The older I grew, the more I grew out of underground. Coming into University was probably the worst thing musically cause at this point, I just love club music, but I can generally tell a good rapper from a bad one, and still love lyricism in club/upbeat rap songs – and yes there’s songs that do have that.
Of the newer guys, J.Cole is by far the most talented.

So you guys trying for 1,000 again today?
February 24th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
Thanks for that. I want to work in Editing before applying to Law school so its good to get this information from someone in the field. Can you elaborate on what you did for freelancing?

Snuff film critic.

I know you’re joking but I have a problem with any government telling people what to believe, how to believe it or to take any of those rights away. Thats when bullets should and will start to fly.

You can have carcinoma on an already decayed corpse?
February 24th, 2011 at 11:17 AM
I would love to, but I don’t think I have the time.
February 24th, 2011 at 11:18 AM
Have been working and not sure where this left off or if it’s worth debating, but you could say this about any profession…
Also, why do teachers require CBA/union protection? Many other modern day unions fit this question as well – state workers, pilots, etc. I guess I don’t understand why they can’t be treated like any other job. The concept is outdated, as regulations citing their need/existance date to the transcontinental railroad construction when jobs literally killed people.

I sent my resume to several different developmental houses and spoke to the people who chose freelancers. I got my foot in the door on a few projects b/c I have a science background to go with my English background (Yeah Spence, I was a double major to go along with my minor in secondary education). I got placed on a few science projects as a writer. Then a few Literature Text projects. A lot of developmental houses are posting writing jobs on Craigslist now, which is kinda weird, but whatever.

I would love to, but I don’t think I have the time.
Totally not the spirit I was looking for.
But yeah I’m kind of tired too. I’m just peeking in here while the basketball folk get their jollies in the most recent posts. Sure would be nice to have a spring training post….
February 24th, 2011 at 11:20 AM
i agree with you, it’s a good thing our country was founded with personal freedoms in mind. i do think humanity is enlightened enough at this point to realize religion is nothing a government should interfere with, but there are those out there who would be more than happy to ban islam, for instance, in the US if given the chance to do so.
February 24th, 2011 at 11:20 AM
You must hate this one then.
February 24th, 2011 at 11:23 AM
Do we really need a remake of The Bodyguard?
I am looking forward to the remake of Red Dawn though.
February 24th, 2011 at 11:23 AM
Sweet. I’m in a similar route (double major, with a business minor) and its great to see that people who chose one of the more chastised majors (English) can still make it.
February 24th, 2011 at 11:23 AM
This. I hate this time of year, 3 basketball posts in a row. I think Im gonna go grab an early lunch.
February 24th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
Wish I could opt for any early lunch. It’s only 10:30 in the central time zone.
February 24th, 2011 at 11:26 AM
You might be surprised by the amount of non-academic writing jobs out there.
February 24th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
shouldn’t this be one sentence? i mean, i know this is one field of your expertise and all, but i took a grammar class in college that i don’t remember anything from.

Well, I’ve done Technical Writing for a number of companies on an internship, so I’m hoping that carries over when applying for copyediting or editing in general.
February 24th, 2011 at 11:29 AM
b/c parents serve on the school board and there have been many instances where they carry a grudge against a teacher b/c of how their little kid is treated in class.

Doesn’t have to be one sentence. In my example I’m using “although” as a conjunctive adverb, not a subordinate conjunction. So fuck you.
And my point about the music class was that I can’t really say anything about historical movements of music b/c I don’t know shit about them.
