The Roundup: UNC Asheville’s Amazing Victory, Staal on Staal Crime & the NFL Combine is Here
Jessica Biel … woman assaults roommate over girl scout cookies … I’m an Amanda Seyfried fan … elementary school students don’t like healthy cafeteria food … “An Earthquake is Brewing in U.S. Economic History” … Carlos Pena seems like a good dude … a political link: Paul Shirley calls Barack Obama a “coward” … was he really the size of a Coke machine? … Steve Spurrier drinking Coors Light, shirtless … these two met playing scrabble on their cell phones, and are getting married … photos of Gerard Pique and Shakira on a date … 25 years ago this week, Len Bias did this in North Carolina … “Mentally ill increasing strain on US prison system” …
Here’s a very comprehensive NFL Combine preview. [Rotoworld]
You don’t have to love or even like the NBA to enjoy this Patty Mills feature. [Columbian]
Dan Marino listed his house for sale for $15.9 million in 2005 – it just sold for $7.2 million. He bought it for $2.15 million in 1995. [Sentinel]
Agree with Woody Paige – the Nuggets front office did a fantastic job with the ‘Melo deal. [Denver Post]
Coco Crisp is funny. He also thinks he’s the fastest guy in MLB. [Thrillist]
Tyreke Evans of the Kings will be out for three weeks (plantar fasciitis). [Sac Bee]
A couple days late, but this column on Syracuse freshman Fab Melo getting yanked after four seconds is quite funny. [Post-Standard]
“This is still a great day for the Knicks, but it would’ve been so much greater if Dolan and Thomas weren’t so destructive.” Woj just floors Zeke with an upper cut. [Yahoo]
Here are some emails that were sent between University of Iowa employees during last month’s incident when 13 players were hospitalized. [Gazette]
I’m about as excited as Pete to see Cam Newton at the Combine this week. [Fox Sports]
“Why did I have to be half-White?,” Blake Griffin deadpanned. [PA Blog]
This is what Charlie Davies’ scar looks like. [Bog]
Here’s a very good takedown of Buzz Bissinger’s weak column about race and the NBA. [The Score]
Michigan’s offense will look different than last year. [Big Ten Blog]
Tell us how you really feel about Billups leaving Denver. [Post]
Eric Staal drilled his brother Marc Staal last night. He was penalized.
UNC Asheville dealt Coastal Carolina only its fourth loss of the season when Matt Dickey stole this inbounds pass and hit an amazing 3-pointer at the buzzer. If this happened in the Big East or ACC, it’d be running a loop on all 17 ESPN channels today. What a finish.

February 23rd, 2011 at 8:39 AM
Steve Spurrier drinking Coors Light, shirtless …
he’s got a nice rack.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:39 AM
that was a good move. browns have a ton of cap space and dawson’s one of the league’s underrated kickers who could’ve left.
but seriously…fuck you.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:39 AM
Someone asked this with a straight face?
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:40 AM
This about sums up Cleveland Browns football.
who else are they going to use it on? seneca wallace?
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:40 AM
For what? He led with his shoulder, stayed on his feet, hit the guy in front and didn’t target the head. That looked pretty textbook to me.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:41 AM
AC…no no, let personnel guru, devang tell the browns how to use their franchise tag. i mean, sure, they don’t have any good players who could leave, so i guess it’s a dumb idea to use it on a damn fine kicker who had one foot out the door.
but i want to hear what head of pro personnel says about it.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:43 AM
No matter what you say about her, she’s got a….GREAT ASS.

February 23rd, 2011 at 8:43 AM
I’m going to keep saying it: if you are a high seed you do NOT want to see Coastal in your bracket.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:44 AM
Eric was not penalized for the hit; there was a hook of Marc a split-second prior to the hit.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:44 AM
Buncha Scott Belichicks around here.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:45 AM
I believe the Ol Ball Coach is sipping on some Coors original . . . doesn’t make it any better
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:45 AM
spence its not like he holds the franchise record for most field goals made or anything.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:46 AM
That makes more sense.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:46 AM
lol…coors original is some stanky shit.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:48 AM
Blake can kill himself if hes not satisfied with who he is.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:48 AM
All I know is when the Browns are down 14- or 21-0 in the first half and you need those FGs to break the schneid, nobody is as clutch as Phil Dawson.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:50 AM
Ugh, what? Did you read the link?
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:50 AM
yes! someone gets it.
seriously, it wasn’t the worst move to franchise dawson. you can’t rollover a franchise tag and it beats picking a kicker off the scrap heap.
but dawson must be PISSED. house was for sale, he’s a texan and houston needed a kicker.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:51 AM
AC…no no, let personnel guru, devang tell the browns how to use their franchise tag. i mean, sure, they don’t have any good players who could leave, so i guess it’s a dumb idea to use it on a damn fine kicker who had one foot out the door.

Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed today or is that your general demeanor?
I have nothing against the Browns, I just thought this was pretty funny. There’s lots of kickers who’ve had the franchise tag used on them. Maybe if the Browns run a competent enough franchise, they would actually have players who can be worth something.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:52 AM
He hates himself because the color of his skin. Fuck him. I read the link. Asking that question was stupid anyways.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:52 AM
seriously, it wasn’t the worst move to franchise dawson. you can’t rollover a franchise tag and it beats picking a kicker off the scrap heap.
it only costs them $3.25 mill.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:53 AM
Oh Texans… that is a big fail on you, brah.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:53 AM
You’re drunk, right?
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:53 AM
Maybe if the Browns run a competent enough franchise, they would actually have players who can be worth something.
how does using the franchise tag on a kicker make them incompetent?
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:54 AM
i was being sarcastic with that comment and agree. i thought i mentioned the fact they had no good players earlier.
ive made no bones about thinking the browns are hot garbage since hiring shurmur.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:55 AM
people don’t read the links.
or the comments.
WHAT DO THEY READ?

The Browns haven’t used the franchise tag since returning in 1999. Boy do they suck the suck out of suck.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:57 AM
meh…he’s a glorified running back as it is.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:57 AM
Wow. This is from the Charlie Davies link.

i hope to have a Combine thread up at 12. i’ll be commenting left and right
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:01 AM
some team is going to strike gold with jonathan baldwin in the 2nd round.
can it be my team? please!?!?
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:01 AM
AC…na, it’s because we really haven’t had anyone good hit free agency because we whiffed on our draft picks or traded them before they were eligible. it’s truly a sucking matter, not financial.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:02 AM
Do you think he lasts that long? If he goes to the combine and puts up Megatron like stats/measurables like everyone expects, I think he’ll move into the 1st round.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:03 AM
i think he’s got enough red flags to make him last. didn’t produce all that much last year (due to QB issues) and spoke out about the team conspiring against him.
NFL won’t like that, but the dude’s a freak.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:04 AM
i’m sure it doesn’t help much spence…
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:05 AM
25 years ago this week, Len Bias did this in North Carolina
i’d be twice NBA fan i am now if Bias hadn’t died.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:07 AM
He could be gold or cheap copper. His mental state would scare the hell out of me. I also think his 40 time will be misleading. It will be fast, but I watched about 5 Pitt games this past year, and he never once played fast.
This shit cracks me up. Blackmon had a flea-flicker TD for 80+ yards where Prince was supposed to have safety help. The safety bit and Prince ran down Blackmon and was in place to make the play but simply failed to do so.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:08 AM
Houston demonstrated incredible off-the-edge burst as a 4-3 pass rusher at Georgia, but draftniks are wary of his ability to translate those traits into a 3-4 defense. Houston needs to show well in coverage drills at the Combine, as well as an explosive “get off” from a two-point stance.
I think he’d be a better 4-3 guy than a 3-4 guy. His coverage skills and whatnot are not very strong.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:09 AM
@Husker – intelligent evaluators know that too. Amukamara is going to have every chance to be a CB in the NFL.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:10 AM
no, but he always played massive and huge. plus, look at his QB and supporting cast this past year…even with baldwin and dion lewis the offense couldn’t get on track in either the run or pass games.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:11 AM
Just finish READing the Paul Shirley article. Very much like his Haiti piece he let’s his message get lost in a milieu of buzzwords and horrible analogies…like this one:
I guess he feels he has to do this to get people to read his stuff, which ultimately makes him little better than the politicians he rails against.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:11 AM
The Browns haven’t used the franchise tag since returning in 1999. Boy do they suck the suck out of suck.
but they won the SB just one year later. oh, wait… nevermind.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:11 AM

February 23rd, 2011 at 9:12 AM
Great article. And a great game. Bias was unstoppable in that game. I saw him play at Cole Field House a few times when I was a kid and he was just amazing.

Woj bringing the heat. Although I’m disappointed he couldn’t figure out a way to blame Lebron for all of this.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:13 AM

this happened to dez bryant last year, too. rumors about heart health issues popped up a couple weeks before the draft.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:18 AM
This is actually a prudent move. Great cold weather kickers don’t grow on trees. Plus, he probably would have ended up in Pittsburgh, which would have sucked.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:18 AM
i always thought jones would be faster than green…green’s amazing, but he’s just so thin. could he work in the short and intermediary zones? he’s a deep threat and great in the red zone, but how does he handle presses at the LOS?

enjoy dan snyder, fag.
if owners were susceptible to free agency, i’m 100% positive that cerrato would view danny’s body of work and opt to bring him back at a higher price.
best run organization in sports!
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:20 AM
let’s try this again: Julio should be an Anquan Boldin/Roddy White type of receiver: physical beast who will break tackles. AJ is more polished, runs excellent routes and has much better hands. I question AJs speed in a 40, but his cuts and breaks on his routes are so good that he gets open easily.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:20 AM
Which is why I said hmmm. Haven’t we seen lately that these guys might hold a little more value than a burner like Green?
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:20 AM
To be fair, if the Thin Mints were being kept in a freezer and therefore, made more awesome, I would have likely assaulted someone over that.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:21 AM
pretty sure he is, but there’s not much to learn about a four year OL starter at the combine.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:21 AM
Word around here is that Zeke has the ear of Dolan and that Walsh didn’t want to give all they gave up to get Melo.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:21 AM
Great article on Len Bias, I remember my dad and I listening to the Mario Elie Kiss of Death game against Phoenix on the radio, it makes it that much more memorable.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:22 AM
Why? That hit looked legit.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:23 AM
This Patty Mills article is tough. Good, but tough.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:24 AM
Jersey: AJ isn’t a burner, though. AJ is also much stronger in game situations than his skinny-ass frame would suggest.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:25 AM
nice to see that the Jake Locker slobfest continued in that combine article.

February 23rd, 2011 at 9:26 AM
Christ all mighty, has a kid ever been scrutinized more for a fucking public intox from 2 years ago?
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:26 AM
Yup. And his performance against the Kerrigan, Heyward, and Clayborn, all pretty much 1st round locks, speaks for itself.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:26 AM
I’ll take your word for it. And AJ is a special receiver. Don’t get me wrong. If he goes in the top 5, power to him. I dunno, I just think Julio is being WAY underrated.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:27 AM
it’s funny…we hear all of these “character concerns” about mallett but nobody will say what they are. meanwhile, NOBODY talked about mark sanchez’ rape accusation from USC…
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:27 AM
Before I read that Paul Shirley link, in my head I was thinking, “why would David Letterman’s sidekick be writing an article on Obama?” I’m an idiot. To my credit, it only took about 1 sentence before I realized that it was the guy who told the Haitians to go fuck themselves, and not some bald Band leader who wrote the article.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:28 AM
But what about the need to satisfy my cravings for all things Gabe.

I am really curious as to where he goes though. He’s the perfect example of a great lineman not getting enough pub.

There are also several floated lines about rumored drug use and whatnot. Kid seems to be getting railroaded. He needs to interview extremely well this week.

February 23rd, 2011 at 9:29 AM
Penalty was actually on Pitkanen. He hooked Marc Staal with his stick. Eric’s hit was clean. His elbow came up but only after he finished the check. Nice hit, too.
Rangers needed those two points. Canes needed the one by going to a SO. Although, it doesn’t matter for Carolina because the Devils are making the playoffs.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:30 AM
Careful, someone might call you an idiot for saying this and then rushing to conclusions. But yeah, I think he’d probably be better off playing baseball at this point.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:30 AM
Heaven forbid in times of financial crisis we ever look to fixing our bloated prison system…I’m sure the state of Wisconsin could save a couple bucks by no longer incarcerating non-violent drug offenders
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:30 AM
I’m always amazed by this. Just put the film on and watch him. I don’t care how fast he runs or how much he lifts. Watch him play the freaking game!!
Locker has bust written all over him. Didn’t do shit in a terrible Pac-10 last year with a team that was supposed to be much improved. AHHH! What am I doing? I hate draft prediction talk. You guys have dragged me down into the sewer.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:31 AM
wallow in it…embrace it.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:32 AM
Julio drops too many passes for me, but both are coming from Pro-style offenses, so that makes them even more attractive. AJ is also going to interview extremely well. I assume Julio will too, but I don’t know anything about him personally. AJ will also go over the middle plenty, so he shouldn’t get a Moss-like knock on him for being a bitch. AJ really is the total package as a WR. I do agree that Julio is being undervalued a bit. Most places have him around 14 right now. That team would be lucky in my opinion to get him at that spot.

Aren’t there a number of NBA teams actually hemorrhaging money? And not in a “we aren’t making enough money” bullshit kind of way. I mean in a real “there are actual minuses in the ledger” kind of way. Isn’t the business of the NBA kind of in trouble, and therefore, the whole CBA mess? Doesn’t this, indirectly, speaking to declining popularity?
I don’t profess to be an expert on the business of the NBA, but I have read of the league’s business troubles in the past, so if someone knows differently, please set me straight.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:34 AM
I take there are going to be a bunch of guys running around in shorts and t-shirts today. Let me know who runs the fastest so I can pick them for my freeze tag team.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:34 AM
I thought the Combine was supposed to be on the NFL Network. My on screen guide is showing a bunch of crap this afternoon.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:34 AM
Julio won a title and played for 2 SEC titles. Clearly he chose correctly. I’d also say that McElroy was a pretty solid college QB and they get the ball down the field plenty at Bama.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:34 AM
It starts tomorrow.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:35 AM
His Haiti article was one of the dumbest article I’ve ever read.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:36 AM
yeah, there were articles all over yesterday saying that he withdrew from last years draft because he was a drug addict. yet because of the aforementioned public intox he was supposedly one of the most tested players on the team, and a team captian to boot. pretty sure the coaches aren’t going to let a guy that is even rumored to have a drug problem be a fucking team captian.
/yeah, he smokes the weed
//so does at least half of probably every D1 football team
///I wouldn’t call that a drug problem

you’re such a hypocrite, it’s not even funny.
julio, a WR who barely impacts a game, has “won a title and played for 2 SEC titles” while the FUCKING QUARTERBACK for three BCS teams chose the wrong school.
you’re just too biased to talk to about anything other than the SEC. so sad…
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:37 AM
Just another example of how legalizing it would make things easier. Worry about painkillers, not weed.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:37 AM
Aren’t there a number of NBA teams actually hemorrhaging money? And not in a “we aren’t making enough money” bullshit kind of way. I mean in a real “there are actual minuses in the ledger” kind of way.
From my understanding, pretty much every small-market team is losing money hand-over-fist. (What the fuck does that expression mean? I hear it used all the time, and yet it really doesn’t make any sense at all. Anybody?)

dont to it. pointless as tits on a boar. an good Lord, those are pointless.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:40 AM
Huh? Comparing a WR and a QB makes little sense. If Pryor wanted to win titles and be on the cover of every magazine, he should have gone to Oregon. The offense would be known as “the Terrelle Pryor Offense” as opposed to the Chip Kelly offense. That’s why I think he should have gone to Oregon. For purely football reasons. Kelly’s scheme couldn’t be more perfect for him. Outside of spread running teams, I don’t think it really matter where WRs go. They are always going to be utilized. I don’t get how the two are the same thing. I really don’t.

dont to it. pointless as tits on a boar. an good Lord, those are pointless.
I know. That’s why I hate it so much. It’s almost as bad as college signing day. I just had a momentary lapse in judgment.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:42 AM
I don’t think Chip Kelly was the coach of Oregon when Terrelle Pryor was being recruiting.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:43 AM
He was the OC.

I know the Vikings have several other concerns, but I would have no problem seeing Julio Jones playing for them. unless they want to hold out a year and get Greg Childs next year.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:43 AM
you don’t think if julio jones went to oklahoma state or some other wide open passing school, he’d be more than the 2nd banana in this year’s draft?
i mean, bama barely used julio. he’s always been more potential than production.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:44 AM
I swear I fuck up verb tense more than anything else when I type comments here. Fingers faster than the brain.

absolutely true. i always wondered why he went there.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:45 AM
No, because AJ was always going to be a better prospect. As long as AJ was in the same draft, every other WR was going to be fighting for 2nd. Also, Julio put up 75+ catches and 1,000+ yards last year. That’s productive in my opinion.

Maybe if you had read the link:

It really won’t matter. You might as well bring Randy Moss back a 3rd time. After all, Tavaris Jackson is your starting QB.

Born and raised on Bama. He was never going anywhere else the moment Saban was hired.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:47 AM
not according to the draft gurus…that recruiting class was headlined by pryor and jones. both haven’t lived up to the hype.

What? A lot of big runs came from him pwning bitches downfield. And if I remember correctly, he torched the shit out of Florida 2 years ago. He’s till good enough to leave early and be a 1st round pick and work his way up the draft board.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:49 AM
Not even TBL reads the links
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:50 AM
im not saying he sucks, just that i remember very clearly all the hype from scout and rivals. he didn’t live up to that, but only one guy from that class gets widely criticized by all the southern mouthbreathers…
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:51 AM
T-Jack has been a thorn in my side going on 6 or 7 years now. I thought I would never mutter his name again after he transferred from Arkansas, yet the guru’s with Minnesota believe(d) that he is NFL material. un fucking believable.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:52 AM
Jones is set to be a top-15 draft pick. Sorry, but that means he’s lived up to the hype.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:52 AM
Ahhh, Spence, so this is you just getting retribution. Carry on. I still say neither Pryor or Jones didn’t screw up their decisions. They would have been more productive in other systems but their both going to be better pros because of where they went.

February 23rd, 2011 at 9:54 AM
the hype was, from this link, “michael irvin only more explosive and faster.”
no way can you say that about jones now.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:54 AM
He was the No. 1 player in the nation, he delayed his signing by months, held multiple press conferences (one in which the sole purpose was to say he wasn’t committing yet) and he is now suspended for the first 5 games of his senior year.
/yeah, we have no reason to criticize him
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:55 AM
agreed, just not according to a certain newfoundland enthusiast with a boner for all things with a drawl.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:57 AM
Michael Bay just does not give a fuck.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:58 AM
you can criticize him all you want, as long as you realize you’re being selective with your criticism from a football standpoint.
alabama didn’t utlize jones to his fullest extent like dana holgorsen or kevin wilson would have. that’s fact.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:00 AM
That photo is great…Johnny 5 is alive you know
I’m all for a +1 system where the winner of Zombies vs. Robots takes on the champion of the upcoming Cowboys and Aliens…I got Robots versus the underdog Cowboys advancing in my bracket before the machines avenge previous movie franchises and claim the title

while this is true, JJ did have some good seasons within the system and coaches he played for, and he got a title out of it.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:02 AM
I’m not being selective at all. You can’t view a QB and a WR in the same line of vision. The system matters so much more for a QB than it does for a WR. If you can’t or won’t accept that, than so be it.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:02 AM
agreed.
i just have an axe to grind with you pryor haters. dude’s been the tip of the spear for two BCS winning teams and a 3rd that took colt mccoy’s texas to the absolute wire and he’s a schmuck?
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:03 AM
Stopped reading after that.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:03 AM
ive accepted that, you’re just missing the point.
anyways, i didn’t mean to make this into a big thing…just was taking a potshot.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:05 AM
This is rich coming from you.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:05 AM
I don’t get how this isn’t the biggest mismatch in the zombie chronicles. Robots cannot be turned, they will smash through the zombies. Am I missing something?

pryor has had success at osu, but he handled his singing so horribly and hyped himself up so much, i think people are going to believe he underperformed if he doesnt win a title. count me as one of those people.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:07 AM
Which is what makes it even more ridiculous.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:08 AM
No contest really, I’m banking on some War of the Worlds type illness to weaken the Aliens (probably pick up an STD at a brothel) opening the door for a Cowboy upset
