Adam Wainwright’s Injury Could Put Him Out For the Season, Panic Time in St. Louis
Adam Wainwright, the Cardinals’ best pitcher the last two years, probably will be lost for the season due to a “significant” elbow injury. Wainwright was the runner-up for the NL Cy Young award last year, and finished third two years ago. Expect a heavy dose of “karma!” from St. Louis fans, who probably think this is the penalty the franchise must pay for not signing Albert Pujols earlier this month.
Wainwright’s injury, coupled with the Brewers’ strengthening their pitching staff this offseason, plus the Reds’ having perhaps the deepest staff in the division, probably means St. Louis will have a very tough time making the postseason. The Cardinals last won a postseason game in 2006 – when they won the World Series.
With Albert Pujols likely to walk in free agency, you’re looking at a franchise that has the potential to make a major nosedive in the coming years. Unless you think Lance Lynn is ready to enter the rotation and become a factor, and the Cards will sign Pujols.
Yankees beat writers are already speculating – would the Cardinals perhaps consider dealing their 2nd best pitcher, Chris Carpenter, for prospects later this summer?

Shitty news. Wish him good luck with the recovery.
@illformula – If you haven’t checked it out, Adam Jones did a couple of interviews with the ESPN baseball podcast guys. They were a good listen.

Welp, there goes the season.
Carp and Garcia are at risk to spend some time on the DL too. I do not know if there are enough Duncan reclaimation projects out there to build a staff.

I’m just a casual baseball fan, but sucks to see a very good player likely out for the season. Hope the surgery is a success.

I like how your evidence that Pujols is likely to walk in free agency is a link to a post you wrote questioning whether Pujols should walk in free agency.

All the Cards need to do is sign Darrell Rasner. Rotation fixed.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:54 AM
Too bad for the Cards. I generally cheer for any team in that division that isn’t the Cubs and Wainwright was always fun to watch.
I guess I’ll be on the Brewers bandwagon this year since I’m a big fan of Marcum & Greinke.

I hate the Cardinals… well, I hate St. Louis sports teams in general. Except maybe the Rams. No one really cares about the Rams, right?
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:56 AM
Terrible news to say the least for the Cards. I do agree with you TBL, if Pujols were to walk, the Cards could be looking at rebuilding. Their farm system outside of Shelby Miller isn’t too hot either.

Based on? Is there a real posibility he walks? Yes.
For once, I can agree with the Birds mgmt, they want to see what the open mkt price will be. Who knows? It could be $28M not $30M.

February 23rd, 2011 at 10:59 AM
I think Pujols ends up staying and I think the Cardinals will be fine. Dave Duncan is still their pitching coach; I’m sure they’ll cobble something together. But I didn’t think this team was making much noise, even with Wainwright.

February 23rd, 2011 at 11:00 AM
This does suck for the Cards and I wouldn’t be shocked if they are out of the race in July and do trade Carpenter, Westbrook and Berkman to contenders. The Cardinals have been building their teams around a “stars and scrubs” theory for so long (Pujols, Holliday, Wainwright, Carpenter as the stars) that it was bound to bite them in the ass at some point.
February 23rd, 2011 at 11:01 AM
Yankees beat writers are speculating that they can get Carpenter & Pujols for Joba & Phil Coke
February 23rd, 2011 at 11:01 AM
Welcome. If they stay healthy it should be a really fun time in Milwaukee come September/October. Interested to see how the back end holds up. Randy Wolf isn’t too bad of option in my opinion.

Yes, they actually have a couple more catchers that are decent and a couple of pitchers (in the lower levels, so take that with a grain of salt) that could be really good.

February 23rd, 2011 at 11:05 AM
With Albert Pujols likely to walk in free agency,
I think he stays with the Cards. Yes losing a top starter hurts, but I don’t think that this situation will sway him either way.
February 23rd, 2011 at 11:05 AM
I hate that piece of shit.
after a shitty NFL season for me, as well as college basketball, I was holding out hope for the Cards this year. I wasn’t expecting a WS by any means, but at least competitive games and in the division race. I am now left with nothing. fuck.

The Brewers being good really is fun, hoping to get out to Miller more than once this summer which is all I managed last year…all the fun of Packer tailgating only with sublime weather
February 23rd, 2011 at 11:15 AM
If he can turn them into something good, I’d have no problem with it.

February 23rd, 2011 at 11:16 AM
Most of the prospect guys (BA, Goldstein @ BP & Keith Law) are really down on him. Other than him and Miller, Cards need to start opening the purse to oversign in the draft and bring in international players.
February 23rd, 2011 at 11:16 AM

February 23rd, 2011 at 11:18 AM
this will actually help the cardinals retain pujols. odds are wainwright won’t be commanding as much when he becomes a free agent due to the surgery.
February 23rd, 2011 at 11:18 AM
Deron Williams to the Nets, karma for the Cardinals not signing Pujols or top 5 heist movie? Discuss.

February 23rd, 2011 at 11:20 AM
Coincidentally, they have actually done just that in the last year or so. They got Carlos Matias/Martinez (or whatever name he’s going by now) last season from the DR and he’s supposed to be a stud pitcher and they drafted Jenkins and paid him enough to get him out of his football commitment to Baylor (which shouldn’t have been a hard sell, it is Baylor, after all) and this offseason they’ve gotten a couple more international signings. They certainly aren’t the Yankees in those regards, but who is? Hopefully it is a sign that they are committed to building the system.
February 23rd, 2011 at 11:21 AM
Just thinking about Cactus League Nachos has me longing for summer…and Miller was also US Cellular North a couple years back, that was a fun time, made it out to the Saturday and Sunday games, witnessed Mark Buehrle’s homer in person, magical
February 23rd, 2011 at 11:22 AM
and he still isn’t worthy of the Hall of Fame.
I’m pretty biased because I got to watch Cox for 3 years in college, but dude is good. has a great eye and makes contact a lot. solid in the field too. the Cardinals farm system worries the shit out of me though.
February 23rd, 2011 at 11:24 AM
He has said repeatably that he wants to stay with the team. I don’t understand where everyone thinks that every team is just going to open the vault and give this guy 30 million a year for 10 years. Yankees are not going to be in it most likely, so who is he going to use to drive up his price?
February 23rd, 2011 at 11:25 AM
Naturally. Chicken tenders, brats, beer, cheese, all of it… nom nom nom. Hoping to make it at least for a couple games.
February 23rd, 2011 at 11:27 AM
it’s just a shame too, considering the cards are one of the historically significant MLB franchises.
this is like the steelers falling apart because big ben got wooed by a bigger-market and polamalu went all bob sanders while harrison gets trade rumors floated all year. just sad.
/note…if the steelers fell apart it’d be GLORIOUS

February 23rd, 2011 at 11:29 AM
both chicago teams, probably washington, maybe san francisco.
he won’t get 30mm/yr but i’d bet money on STL offering him 8 years at 225mm-ish with an option for an onwers stake in the team upon his retirement, with hefty bonuses when he sets records associated with home runs, etc.
February 23rd, 2011 at 11:33 AM
This. I really think he comes back to the Cardinals.
February 23rd, 2011 at 11:34 AM
San Fran has Belt coming up this year, $30 mil on Pujols or team controlled player for six years and cheap? They eventually got give Bumgarner, Timmy, and Posey money
February 23rd, 2011 at 11:34 AM
Sadly, this will happen. Send a copy of BA’s 2005 top 10 STL prospects to Antonetti/Shapiro and let them pick one and throw in a couple career minor leaguers and Carmona is gone.
/If I see Justin Masterson on the mound Opening Day…………..
February 23rd, 2011 at 11:41 AM
Yep, little chance now, even with Sabean, that the Giants run at Pujols. Huff is signed for this year and next as well.
The Cards don’t really have a whole lot to offer a team looking for young players.
And I hope Masterson finds a way to get out lefties this year. Another player I have an inexplicable attachment to.
