Accenture Match Play Tournament Begins!
If you want your early fix of March Madness tournament action, 64 of the best golfers in the world are in Arizona this week to play some single elimination golf. If you like upsets and a wide open tournament, then this is the event. Martin Kaymer, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Lee Westwood, this year’s top seeds, will hope to perform better than last season’s. Last year, all of the #1 seeds were eliminated by the second round.
Last year, the higher seeded player won only 20 of the 32 matches on the opening day, and the match play semifinalists featured a #2 seed, #3 seed, #4 seed, and #6 seed. The tournament will again be at the Nicklaus-designed Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain course in Marana, Arizona. The course, like many of its modern brethren, is going to require length (7,849 yards) and shot making ability. Here’s a course guide with hole-by-hole layout and distances for those who are interested (Saguaro is the front 9 for this tournament; Tortolita is the back 9).
Here’s a full listing of the tournament bracket, which begins with Ian Poulter and Stewart Cink at 7:25 local time (9:25 on the East Coast) and sees the pairs go off every 10 minutes until all 32 groups hit the course. The #1 seeds tee off near the end of the day, with Mickelson’s match with Brendan Jones beginning at 11:25 local (Mountain) time, and Woods starting against Thomas Bjorn at 11:45.
Here’s a quick bracket by bracket preview, with the top four seeds listed, a highlighted first round match, my guess among the top 4 seeds in the group to advance, and my bracketbuster seeded 5 or lower. If they fail (likely) I can just chalk it up to the randomness of the tournament, and if I somehow get some right, it was pure skill.
BOBBY JONES BRACKET
Top Four Seeds: #1 Lee Westwood; #2 Steve Stricker; #3 Luke Donald; #4 Retief Goosen
First Round Match: #2 Steve Stricker vs. #15 Matteo Manassero (9:25 MT). The top seeds do not have it easy in this bracket. I could have gone with Westwood, who has never advanced far in this event, drawing 2007 Champion Henrik Stenson, another matchup that belies the seeding. But I’ll go with the 17-year old Manassero against the 44-year old Stricker. Manassero is likely a tougher draw than his ranking because he is still building up points, but the young Italian phenom has played well in big stages, finishing in the top 40 two years ago as an amateur at the Masters in his only other trip to U.S. soil.
Top Seed Pick to Advance to Match Play Semis: Luke Donald
Sleeper Pick to Advance: #7 Charl Schwartzel. The next South African golfer to emerge, Schwartzel is leading the European Tour in scoring average so far in 2011. Of course, he will have to get past 19-year old Ryo Ishikawa, so that pick could go down in flames early also.
BEN HOGAN BRACKET
Top Four Seeds: #1 Phil Mickelson, #2 Graeme McDowell, #3 Ian Poulter, #4 Matt Kuchar
First Round Match: #3 Ian Poulter vs. #14 Stewart Cink (7:25 MT). In a match that could pass for a final day Ryder Cup pairing, the defending champion of this event, the always quotable and fashionable Poulter, will meet up with the American veteran Cink.
Top Seed Pick to Advance to Match Play Semis: Tough to go away from defending champ Ian Poulter here, but I’m going with Graeme McDowell.
Sleeper Pick to Advance: #6 Alvaro Quiroz. The 28-year old Spaniard is the longest driver on the European Tour, and is starting to mature into a better golfer, improving his greens in regulation. If he can keep his long drives in play at Dove Mountain, he could be dangerous. If Poulter does get upset, it could come in the second round to Quiroz. Can I pick two in this bracket? Please. #8 Rickie Fowler too. My 91-year old grandfather, who watches more golf than anyone I know, mentioned Fowler when I talked to him. If he can advance, he could get a shot at Mickelson in round 2.
GARY PLAYER BRACKET
Top Four Seeds: #1 Martin Kaymer, #2 Rory McIlroy, #3 Jim Furyk, #4 Robert Karlsson
First Round Match: #8 Zach Johnson vs. #9 Justin Rose (12:35 MT). The winner of this match will have a good chance to challenge Martin Kaymer, and may then be as good a favorite as any in this bracket if they can pull the upset.
Top Seed Pick to Advance to Match Play Semis: I want to make the completely sentimental pick here, Jim Furyk, but I’ll go with Rory McIlroy.
Sleeper Pick to Advance: #9 Justin Rose. Rose has always been tempting, but I think if any of the later guys can make a run, he could be the one. He’ll have to get past Martin Kaymer to do so.
SAM SNEAD BRACKET
Top Four Seeds: #1 Tiger Woods, #2 Paul Casey, #3 Ernie Els, #4 Dustin Johnson
First Round Match: #8 Geoff Ogilvy vs. #9 Padraig Harrington (11:55 MT). Winner likely gets Tiger Woods. Ogilvy is a 2-time champion of this event (2006 & 2009) and was also the runner up in 2007. Harrington is a less stellar 11-10 in the event. If Ogilvy meets Woods in the 2nd round, they would account for 5 of the 12 winners of this event.
Top Seed Pick to Advance to Match Play Semis: This is the bracket with the big guns: Woods or Casey, Casey or Woods. Paul Casey has been to the finals the last two years at this course. Woods is not on as good form, but used to be such a beast in match play events, from his amateur days to Ryder Cup, and has won this event three times (2003, 2004, 2008). The betting line doesn’t help with the decision (Woods, Casey and Kaymer are the top favorites, at only 14 to 1). I’m going to go against recent form and Casey’s two year run to the finals, and say Woods gets it going and survives the tough Snead bracket.
Sleeper Pick to Advance: #12 Bill Haas. Haas has been on good form recently, with 3 top 10 finishes in five starts in 2011. He’ll get a chance to advance as a popular 12 seed pick out of an all-Yank quadrant that includes Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, and Mark Wilson.

casey’s a “big gun” that always misfires in the heat of battle. he’s a choker.
fowler looks to be tailor made for match play.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:40 AM
That is just crazy. 17 years old. Nice post, Lisk. I actually enjoy the match play event. I’m actually astounded that Tiger is a #1 seed. Is he still in the top 4 in the World Golf Rankings?
I also appreciate you putting a picture of commenter jck49erfan in there, but since this is TBL and all… Jenn Brown is covering the event. Can we get a Jenn Brown photo?

17 year old seoung-yul noh from korea is another one. prodigies man…

I’m glad you did this preview.
I like a Euro to win. Perhaps an Italian going by “Molinari”
That gives me a 1 in 32 chance.

Padraig Harrington and his family bloodline is garbage.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:43 AM
Furyk usually fairs pretty well in this event too, doesn’t he?
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:44 AM
7900 yards
that’s insanity
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:44 AM
furyk’s and his control golf ilk are at the mercy of the draw. they could be tough competitors or they could get lapped by a young gun with 50 yards on them off the tee.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:45 AM
not really…elevation and the ball is going to run. it’ll play like all the other 7,300-7,500 courses we’re used to seeing.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:46 AM
I love this event, is it available on-line anywhere?
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:48 AM
I’ll take Paul Casey for the win and Iowa native Zach Johnson as my sleeper.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:51 AM
Ryan fucking Palmer, gentlemen.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:51 AM
I’ll take Steve Stricker for the block Peter.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:53 AM
The Sam Snead Bracket is treacherous. Sorry Bubba. I’ll go with Hunter Mahan and AK as my sleeper.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:57 AM
I don’t like your Rory pick. He is prone to flame-outs if he’s not timing his swing well during a given round.
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:59 AM
not really…elevation and the ball is going to run. it’ll play like all the other 7,300-7,500 courses we’re used to seeing.
come on, dude. have you ever player a 7300-7500 yard track? that shit is long, even longer if your driver isn’t consistent. don’t downplay the distance!
February 23rd, 2011 at 9:59 AM
he’s about as boom or bust as it gets on tour.
i don’t like the rory pick because that kid’s headed down the exact same path as adam scott and sergio garcia. too much money at too young an age.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:00 AM
I wish they would do an event like this at the end of the season to determine the FedEx Cup winner. Take the top 32 guys in FEC points and seed them and let them play off for the $10MM prize.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:00 AM
of course i’ve seen that long a course, im talking about “we’re used to seeing on tour.”
that distance is old hat to those guys. for us normal people 6,700 can be a bear.

February 23rd, 2011 at 10:02 AM
Quiros has the same issue as Rory. Sickeningly long when they’re on, but both of those swings are timed (and at times stuck) and likely won’t hold up under pressure. Immense talent, both of them, but they both have room to improve their consistency.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:02 AM
That would be very entertaining.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:04 AM
for the mega-bombers, dustin johnson has the most consistent technique, but even his extremely bowed wrist at the top causes problems.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:05 AM
i said “played,” not “seen”.
i’m longer than most of the guys i play with (/no homo) and hitting 5-6 irons into par 4′s makes it much more difficult to score than 8-9 irons. then again, i’m not a pro, but the concept still applies.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:06 AM
you might be longer than most of your group, but you’re still 30-50 yards behind an average pro. even the shortest hitters are longer than us schmucks.

that would be fun to watch, but i think the FedEx Cup winner should be a body of work, not an elimination tourney. the hardest thing about golf is finding consistency, not playing well for a 2 week span.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:09 AM
you know what would shorten that course up? Hybrids…
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:09 AM
yea, but you wouldn’t even be invited unless you had the requisite body of work.
eventually it comes down to who’s the hottest player at that moment. it always does…matt kuchar’s body of work was more arguably more impressive than furyk’s last year, but furyk still won it all.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:10 AM
but you’re still 30-50 yards behind an average pro.
no chance. i’m easily 280-285 avg off the tee.

with your driver…PGA distance stats take into account 3w/2i’s off the tee and only shots that end up in the fairway (which makes no sense, if you ask me).

sorry, but you’re not convincing me i’m 30-50 yards behind the avg tour player. there’s only one way to solve this, you know what to do.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:17 AM
Lisk… if you’re around, I’d like to introduce you to something and possibly just jump start your interest in hockey again. I hate advanced stats normally, HOWEVAH, Geeezeus recently introduced the following to me:

Take a look, see what you think. You’re a numbers guy. I actually really like them because normal stats in that sport aren’t all that telling. Just throwing it out there for you to peruse.

I’m beginning to think Tiger is never going to be Tiger again. That doesn’t mean he can’t win some majors, but his aura simply isn’t what it once was, and a match play event will bear that out more than any other type. I hope I’m wrong about it, but that’s the feeling I get with Tiger these days.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:18 AM
agreed…he might win a major or two, but the days of bitch slapping fields looks to be over.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:18 AM
Check out this page – the “average” pro hits greater than 20% of his drives over 300 yards this season, regardless of conditions.
/The PGA stat pages are awesome. Lisk would get a chubby
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:20 AM
This would be pretty sweet.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:21 AM
I’ll take Tiger to capture one major this year. Not going to pick which one, but I’d take the bet for him to win one. I think JPQ can reserve the ballroom at Del Boca Vista though and start buying ice. Don’t think Tiger gets to 19.

Do you know of any sites that weigh statistics based on era? Such as how many points a current player would put up in a certain era or how the team around you affects point production. That link you just posted may have all of that but my computer isn’t opening it for some reason.

February 23rd, 2011 at 10:24 AM
everyone’s high on the youngsters, even though they’ve made their surge onto the tour while tiger’s life was in shambles.
i’m not saying these newcomers aren’t promising, i’m just not giving up on tiger’s return just yet.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:24 AM
Americans just do not play enough (any) match play as juniors, etc. so the format is suited for the Euros, non-USA field. It also hinders USA’s performance in Ryder/President’s Cups…
Spence, McIlroy COULD end up like Sergio/Scott, but he plays with such a care-free, “I can make any shot” attitude that makes me think he’ll survive the early success/money. Sergio was always way too tight on the course and Scott just didn’t give as shit despite being super talented and rock-solid swing-wise.
I’ll take Ogilvy.
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:25 AM

I don’t think Tiger is going to lose because the younger talent is that good. I think Tiger is done being the Tiger we grew up with because he’s not right anymore. His swing was apparently fucked up and his mental state cannot be what it once was. Add all of that into him getting older, and you see why he’s the way he is right now.

@Dixon
That site only goes back to 2007-08. I think CORSI only goes back to the lockout. Don’t know of any others that go farther back than that. I’m still uncovering what Behind the Net is capable of. dude, sergio was just as care free early on, he wasn’t tight at all, especially not when he burst onto the scene in 1999.
im just saying, when mcilroy tells the press he “forgot how many cars he has” it’s not a good sign. nor is it when he says he’s moving home to be closer to his GF and then immediately breaks up with her. didn’t like his ryder cup comments, don’t like the fact he’s the same player he was when he burst onto tour and it’s that “care-free” attitude that makes me think he’ll never take golf seriously.
too many moving parts in his swing…i’ll take kaymer over just about anyone.

If you look at articles written by Tom Awad at Hockey Prospectus (some are behind paywalls) or Gabe Desjardins at Behind the Net you can track down some posts on normalizing historical statistics.

Add all of that into him getting older, and you see why he’s the way he is right now.
he’s 35yrs old. that’s not old in golf. if anything, his body has more wear and tear b/c of his violent swing.
his mental recovery casts more doubts about his comeback than his actual swing problems. personally, i’m putting his mental toughness up there with jordan, where the slightest shift away from dominance only motivates him more to get back to the top.

I played a Tour 18 course in Houston that had the Amen Corner holes. I don’t remember the numbers, but the one that you go over a creek, then back over the Creek to the left to a huge multi-tiered green was one of the toughest holes I’ve played, and it wasn’t even the real thing.

I have a friend who played Augusta a few years ago. It was good timing, too, because it was on one of the last days the members could play before they closed it to get ready for the tournament.
He said it’s wide open. Of course traditionally there is no rough out there, so getting off the tee box wasn’t a problem. But he said he lost two strokes a hole around the greens. Said nothing would land or stop close to the pin, chipping was impossible, not to mention most people don’t realize the severe elevation changes there. By all accounts, it sounds unreal. I just want to visit. Let alone play it.

golf is so much more difficult to win than tennis and the matchplay proves it. the last entrant, jb holmes, got pushed into tim clark’s old slot and is taking on villegas and is already up 2 after 3 holes. would a last minute entry have a chance at knocking out a solid pro in a tennis tourney?
don’t think so.

Beside the point, but people who play tennis with any sort of competitiveness kind of freak me out. This originated in high school when all the guys who played Little League signed up for baseball but only lasted a few days because they sucked so bad. So, they switched over to tennis and spent their days playing tiddlywinks and practicing their backhands.
