Bob Sanders is on Free Agency Tour Around the League, Proving Just How Desperate Some Teams Are
When Bob Sanders was released by the Colts last week, I thought interest in him would be relatively luke warm. I know that he was an impact player four years ago, but Sanders has managed only 9 games in the last three seasons. He’s going to be 30, so the chances of a revival are pretty slim.
Last year, I looked at defensive positions and injuries. I was surprised to see that safety (along with inside linebacker) ranked as the worst position in terms of longevity of young star players. 26% of the 50 best young safeties missed at least one-third or more of games played from ages 26-29 (Sanders was not included in that study, since he hadn’t turned 29 when I did it). Over half of the best safeties through age 25 were out of the game by age 30, Sanders’ age next year.
While 30 may not seem old, it is pretty old in football years for a safety who started at a young age and has had injury issues. I don’t see much hope to suggest that Sanders is a good investment for a bounce back. No reasonably comparable safety has missed as many games at the same age as Sanders over the last three years; the safeties with the missed games profile most similar to Sanders at age 28 and 29 were Roy Williams and Mike Brown. Kenny Easley battled injuries at the end of his career and was done by age 29. David Fulcher missed half the games at age 28 and 29; he retired at 30. Dick Anderson of the Miami Dolphins Super Bowl winning teams missed a full season at age 29; he couldn’t come back to form and played two more seasons as a reserve. Gary Fencik is about the only point of hope, as he missed 7 games at age 29 and then was part of the Bears dominating defenses from age 30-32. But missing a total of 7 games due to one injury from age 27 to 29 is a far cry from playing in a total of 9 games.
Still, teams are showing interest (and Donte Whitner is showing interest in their Bob Sanders interest). Sanders has already visited with Jacksonville and Buffalo in the last two days. A few others may jump in the mix. I wouldn’t be willing to do more than a veteran minimum with playing time incentives, but based on the early interest from teams, I’m guessing some teams will bid higher for his services. I just hope they aren’t expecting the 2007 version of Bob Sanders to walk on the field, stay healthy, and play the same way he did then even if he is on the field for more than half the games.
Sanders was a ferocious hitter as an undersized player, but those hits have probably taken their toll. At the “running back” position of the defense, dishing out punishment to bigger players, careers can be shortened. I’m guessing Sanders is going to fit the historic results, and teams shouldn’t expect too much now.

B Sanders is a douche.
February 22nd, 2011 at 8:08 PM
Seriously, this guy was awesome when he was healthy. I have no problem with him getting paid one more time. Enjoy Buffalo, Cincinnati, or Houston.
February 22nd, 2011 at 8:13 PM
I liked JPQ telling Whitner on twitter he should turn in his Bills jersery for saying that. Seriously that is some bullshit on Whitner’s part. If there’s a strike and the NFL tries to have scab players again, does Whitner get the shortest odds to walk the line? Sanders tour is such an obvious ploy to get Daniel Snyder to give him $25M guaranteed before the CBA is up

tj ward and kurt coleman…this is your future. only it’s much less productive.
brian dawkins was an undersized thumper and he lasted a decent bit, but im not sure if he started at that young an age.
/looked it up
//he isn’t undersized, i was wrong…tho he always looked a little short to me

I do love Bob Sanders. Not enough to want my team to give him a shot, but ya know…
February 22nd, 2011 at 8:21 PM
ya know he’s gonna end up on the raiders?

fuck yea…gonna dvr it. i miss football as much as golf.
February 22nd, 2011 at 8:42 PM
I remember when the Colts drafted him, the word was he wouldn’t have a long career because his style would wreck his body. His practices have always been limited and he still broke down quickly. But he was an absolute monster of a player when healthy.
February 22nd, 2011 at 8:42 PM
I’m just hoping for Allen Bailey to Mike Mamula his way back into the 1st round

The match play preview post is written, spencer, it will be up by or before the first tee time.
February 22nd, 2011 at 9:37 PM
sweet foods and/or chocolate aren’t my thing but even i love fucking oreos.
it’s weird that they would probably fall under “sweets that require a glass of milk,” yet something as tasteless as warm water will work fine.
February 22nd, 2011 at 9:39 PM
RIP Banders and Bob Sanders. But the guy went to Iowa, so he kind of had this coming.
Nice. I mention of three shitty teams that doesn’t include the Lions. Progress!

good call on schwartzel.
i have schwartzel, Cink, Kaymer, Dustin Johnson, Johnson taking it all. he should dominate dove mountain and rack up birdies by the dozen.

February 22nd, 2011 at 10:02 PM
I like Dustin Johnson – had wins bets on him at the Open at 60-1 and PGA at 40-1 (ARGH) but so much of match play is putting and I don’t trust Dustin to make his share of putts.

February 22nd, 2011 at 10:09 PM
I highlighted Schwartzel as one of my lower seeds (5 or lower) who could make a run. I tried to pick one favorite (top 4 seeds) and one darkhorse in each group. I cheated in the Hogan group though, taking both Quiroz and Fowler.
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:12 PM

you also can’t count out desert golfers…casey, ogilvy, kaymer, mcilroy and poulter all spend lots of time in arizona or dubai. that style of target golf lends itself well to this event in arizona.

I’m old, but this shit is funny. Nice to latch onto something new.
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:18 PM
yea, but tiger’s playing like shit. and i can’t, in good conscience ever root for paul casey in anything. ogilvy hasn’t been his old self, neither has paddy, and bubba’s coming off an injury.
bill haas is in that bracket too and has been red hot this year and overton can keep up with anyone. i think that’s the most intriguing bracket by far…that and the jones bracket.
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:18 PM
Lisk:
Quiros hits it a mile, I though he had a really tough 2nd round match when I was going over it. He did just win 2 weeks ago. He also is like all the Spaniards in that he chips in a lot from around the green. I think JM Olathabal (sp) holed about 40% of his bunker shots that I watched (and about 40% more were tap ins)
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:19 PM
plus some dude named Eldrick.
everyone’s so quick to forget how dominant he was for over a decade. i can’t wait until he’s back.
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:20 PM

February 22nd, 2011 at 10:29 PM
i’m never real pumped to play early in the season. the fall is much better than the spring, imo. the courses are in better shape and you’ve had time to hone your game.

yes and no. you can’t dismiss the likelihood that his dominance and consistency had something to do with opposing players choking.
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:35 PM
The other thing that makes me also doubt Tiger will be dominant again is that he appears to have lost that intimidation factor. Most of the other pros don’t seem to give him the benefit of the doubt much either. Too many young guys who are gunning for him.
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:36 PM
Guess I was late with that thought!
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:37 PM
robert trent jones trail
that’s one of the places you were considering, right? that’s a long way for hawkeye. maybe something closer to everyone?
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:37 PM
maybe opposing players choked against tiger, maybe not. bob may didn’t. chris dimarco and vijay didn’t. he just didn’t have that ONE (or couple) iconic foe like hogan did with snead, palmer/nicklaus/hogan, nicklaus/palmer/player/casper, nicklaus/watson/trevino.
ernie played tiger tough, hal sutton beat him and phil has gotten the better of him recently.
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:38 PM
The Wings played well tonight. They created plenty of scoring chances but Niemi was fantastic. Sharks did a great job at clearing pucks out and not allowing second chances. The 4th goal was all on Jimmy…. Can’t win em all.
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:38 PM
ill…honestly, haven’t given it much thought.
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:39 PM
You guys suck. I’m in the young kids portion of life, and don’t have 4+ hours to burn. Maybe can try to revive it at around 40. I’ve played only a handful of times in the last few years. Iron play still there for the most part, but not quite as sharp, but can’t putt anymore, which means I three putt everything.
/remembers when I played twice a week in grad school
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:39 PM
Ill:
Part of it is that they knew he wouldn’t make a mistake (and birdie all the par 5′s) so other pros (why do I always think of Els) would try to take too many chances and make big mistakes.
Tiger isn’t automatic from 10 feet on in anymore which is his biggest problem, imo. His ball striking has always come and gone since he left Butch.
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:40 PM
Too many young guys who are gunning for him.
methnks he likes this and it will drive him to work harder on his game this year, something he was unable to do last year because of personal life distractions/responsibilities.
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:42 PM
els was usually guaranteed a disaster double crossed fairway wood on a par 5 that inevitably found water that doomed him down the stretch.
but ernie agianst tiger at kapalua and in the president’s cup where they played to a draw was some of the best golf i’ve ever seen. those highlight packages are DVR royalty.
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:43 PM
Tiger isn’t automatic from 10 feet on in anymore which is his biggest problem, imo. His ball striking has always come and gone since he left Butch.
totally agree. switching putters during the british last year was the biggest telling sign.

tiger’s back to his old scotty. i think he’s done tinkering, but the method is a pretty nice putter.
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:46 PM
Yeah that Hawaii showdown was epic – eagle putt on top of Eagle putt. Also President Cup where they each had a bunch of must make 6 footers for the Cup. Tiger came from about 6 back in the final round to beat Ernie overseas twice I think.
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:47 PM
Lisk – I’ve a 5 and a 2-year old. I get to make it to the range and out a couple times a month. Spencer’s right, the early tee times and range after dinner work out pretty well.

February 22nd, 2011 at 10:49 PM
i thought ernie had a shot to get tiger at the 2007 pga at southern hills, but tiger went all floyd mayweather and was just hitting lasers with his 2 iron off the tee and kept him at an arm’s length. ernie missed some key putts and it was over…
i remember that because ernie used a center shafted putter and i had never seen him use that style before. you gotta figure that played into the shotty putting…
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:51 PM
I loved Butch Harmon’s suggestion to Foley at the PGA. His students against Foley’s students in a showdown.
Harmon has Mickelson, Whatney (streaky as hell), Dustin Johnson and Cink (or Scott or even Couples). Scott has fallen off the earth though.
Foley has Woods, Sean O’Hair (best ball striker on tour?), Rose and Mahan.
Trash talking allowed
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:54 PM
cink and scott aren’t with butch anymore, but it’d still be a good matchup.
id have to go with foley’s bunch tho, right now.
o’hair isn’t the best ball striker on tour anymore. id have to go with mahan or westwood right now.

Yeah, I’ll try the range this summer. Son got a set of clubs from my dad and I need to get him out to work on them, start him on some lessons.
Kids are up by 7 am. And I’m the morning person (or should I say the one who operates on less sleep), so . . . mornings not going to happen right now.

HOLY SHIT THAT MUSTACHE IS FUCKING AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
link?
Always on the lookout for a good ‘stache. My wife refuses to allow me to do it. I’m still stoked that Fjeld’s mustache is following me on twitter. At first I thought it was some other Vermont student who created the account, but pretty sure it is the actual player.

Huh. Tosh.0 review of Tiptoes. Is this a new episode? That movie is one of the weirdest, worst things I’ve ever seen

Hey Donte Whitner, go fuck yourself. You suck at pro football and make me hate ohio state defensive backs even more. I’ll take a crippled Bob Sanders over a healthy Donte Whitner.

This shouldn’t be THAT surprising. Those positions, along with running are probably amongst the most physical (and dangerous) in the game. Long term, missing all those games is probably good for Sanders’ health. (speaking of safetys, one can’t help but think about Dave Duerson).
