Blake Griffin Won the Slam Dunk Contest, But He Really Shouldn’t Have
Blake Griffin’s first dunk, when he attacked the rim like a tornado, was awesome. Griffin’s elbow-in-the-the-rim dunk was kinda cool, but it had been done before. The side-of-the-backboard jam and the leaping over the car? Nothing special.
JaVale McGee had a more creative – and one could argue, more impressive – body of work in his dunks, but the Wizards’ center never stood a chance against one of the most popular players in the league on his home floor.
I enjoyed the dunk contest. I do think at some point, the contest needs to start deducting 1/2 a point for each miss. You never want to curtail creativity, but it kind of looks silly when you try a dunk five or six times … and then get a 50. All the misses kill momentum. And once you’ve seen a freak like McGee try to dunk two balls at once like five or six times, the actual dunk becomes less impressive.

Ibaka was robbed. enough w/ multiple attempts to make one dunk. it took McGee almost the entire 2 mins to make the 2 ball dunk. what a joke.
and Griffin dunking over the hood is not impressive. weak contest
best part, Coco Miller looking fine as ever!

Griffin might have have only been the 4th best dunker.
DeRozen got hosed on both of his dunks.

Griffin’s first 2 attempts on the first dunk (same as the completed dunk but a windmill instead of the more simple double clutch) was insane and woulda been an all time great dunk contest dunk if he completed it. I almost fainted on that first try.
Also, DeRozan was more robbed than anyone. At first I thought it should have been him and Griffin in the finals, but BG shouldn’t have even been in there in hindsight…his dunks in the finals weren’t that great.
And don’t get me started on the car dunk.when a few minutes before Kenny Smith was on the mic claiming “no props, no bunnies, no gimmicks etc…” then brought out the single biggest gimmick dunk ever.

Not to be too much of a homer, but Derozan was robbed. Oh well, there was no way Griffin wasn’t winning this thing – what do you tell the choir and Kia if Blake doesn’t make the final?

Dumbest thing was Kenny Smith saying ““no props, no bunnies, no cars”

The over the car dunk – nice product placement for Kia; meh dunk.

why was there a choir out there?
the best part of that video was baron davis sticking his head out the sunroof. i want my 2 minutes back.

Probably would have been more impressed by Griffin if I hadn’t seen someone jump on the hood of a car in every Dukes of Hazzard episode.

Is this the part where Griffin turns heel and starts whacking people with folding chairs, only to rush out later in the season and save Kevin Durant from a beating by Kobe and the Lakers?

The best ones of the whole thing were Ibaka’s FT line dunk and DeRozan’s “show stopper” were f’ing rad. The Javale McGee things with 2 & 33 basketballs were impressive but not really as great looking as they sound. Blake’s first dunk would have been the best if he’d made the first attempt

just checked it out…hell yea.

If you have a problem with the missed dunks, you might as well get rid of the dunk contest. The problem is everyone wants to see new dunks. Well, new dunks are kind of hard. You have to pick 1 of 3: See these guys flush home dunks we’ve already seen, try to put down dunks we haven’t, or just get rid of it.

What he said!!!!
I enjoyed the showmanship, and there wasn’t a weak dunk in competition. People talk about the car dunk, but even with that, doing that “routine” dunk while jumping over a car isn’t quite so routine.

Ibaka’s FT line dunk was more impressive than any dunk Blake completed. So were both of Demar’s dunks (the “Showstopper” in particular was incredible). McGee’s under the backboard dunk was sick (plus he had more creativity overall with the 2 and 3 ball dunks he made earlier.) I would have had Mcgee and Demar in the finals, leaving Demar the former USC Trojan (and LA native) to dunk over the car if Kia paid for that. Blake probably should have finished 4th overall just based on the dunks he made (not the ones he attempted and missed)

Demar the former USC Trojan (and LA native)
Ahem! He’s from Compton, not L.A.

He totally got that from the NBA 2K games. The ability to dunk over a car has been in those since they started putting the Dunk Contest in them.
