Hopefully Michael Scarn can save the day

It almost makes me sad Jersey, because it’s gonna go back to being cold tomorrow. Definitely going to go for a walk after work though and make the most of it.

February 18th, 2011 at 8:30 AM
The Jordan video is the best thing I’ve seen the web in a long time. Holy shit…I miss watching him play. I feel bad for kids now who didn’t get a chance to watch Jordan in his prime.
February 18th, 2011 at 8:30 AM
This time next week I’ll be on a plane to Puerto Rico for a 1 week cruise.CAN’T. FUCKING. WAIT!
Any photography enthusiasts over here? I’m look for a 55-200, 250, or 300 lens for my EOS rebel. Appreciate any suggestions.
February 18th, 2011 at 8:31 AM
How dare you, she’s a nice lady!
And how does Reggie Miller not get to be a finalist for the HoF? That’s bullshit.

photography enthusiast here. got this 10mm-24mm wide angle lens for Christmas…badass. I use a Sony a230k, so I don’t know much about the Canons. if you don’t have a zooom lens already though, get one. the 75mm-300mm zoom lens is the first extra lens I bought to go with our camera.
February 18th, 2011 at 8:38 AM
Sorry TBL, I looked at the link, we disagree on her. She looks kind of trashy to me.
February 18th, 2011 at 8:38 AM
I want a powerful camera in a bad way, but there are too many things on the list of importance ahead of it.
February 18th, 2011 at 8:41 AM
awesome.
February 18th, 2011 at 8:41 AM
Could not agree more. I made my son watch youtube videos of Jordan highlights a few weeks back. GOAT.

The woman who suffered the migraine/speech issue on TV was interviewed.
February 18th, 2011 at 8:44 AM
Just looked at the list of people he was up against. The only people I think that you could even remotely argue should be ahead of Miller were Lucas, Mullin, Sabonis and Marciulionis, and I’m not exactly convinced about any of those.
February 18th, 2011 at 8:46 AM
for serious, a good camera is so much fun. we bought ours right after we got married and were distraught last summer when we somehow broke the lcd viewing screen on our way up to NYC. it was the Sony a100k and we priced fixing the screen at about $200, but the upgrade to the next model was about $400 so we just bought the new camera. so, if anybody wants a perfectly good Sony a100k that just needs a new lcd screen, hit me up.
February 18th, 2011 at 8:47 AM
I woke up extra early this morning just to have some coffee outside before work. I’m going todo everything in my power to enjoy this weather today. A long lunch is in my future.
February 18th, 2011 at 8:49 AM
Leaving for NYC soon. Brooklyn Brewery on Saturday and then Flyers/Rangers game on Sunday. Good weekend
February 18th, 2011 at 8:50 AM
despite being surrounded by a sea of redneck, that’s one thing the south is good for. Mild to warm weather year around. We don’t get excited about 60 degree weather down here.
February 18th, 2011 at 8:51 AM
My son was watching Pros versus Joes last week and he asked me “who is Dennis Rodman”? Ugh. Kids these days…..
February 18th, 2011 at 8:52 AM
The fuck we don’t. After it was 40 or below for 30 consecutive days we had a weekend in the upper 50s and everyone was thrilled.
February 18th, 2011 at 8:53 AM
first day in the 50′s is shorts weather.
February 18th, 2011 at 8:54 AM
No way that’s the best pic of the new girl. You’re just trying to piss us off.
February 18th, 2011 at 8:54 AM
It’s been in the 50s all week here. I figure we have another month of “on again, off again” good weather until it breaks for good.

February 18th, 2011 at 9:00 AM
I shoot nikon, but if you haven’t checked out borrowlenses.com yet it’s a good place to try out lenses before the purchase.
what EOS model do you have?
I’d suggest Sigma or Tamron, i think they have a 18-275mm for most brands.
February 18th, 2011 at 9:00 AM

I saw a Canon 55-300 with a high f ratio (4-5.6) for $149 at Amazon. I might stick with the 250 as the 300mm is going to require a tripod. I’m not lugging that on a ship.
February 18th, 2011 at 9:01 AM
FWIW, i give props to TBL for sticking to his guns on yesterday’s controversial post. through five years and thousands of posts, there’s going to be occasional material that offends certain people, it’s inevitable. whether i agree or disagree with the content, i can respect someone who accepts it for what it is and doesn’t ignore, run, or hide (ahem… ole miss post!) from criticism. and while you should certainly tailor posts toward the interests of your readership, i find it comical, at best, that we (commenters) feel obligated to jump on our moral high horse from time to time just to blast one, rare post.
it’s the internet. it’s a blog. calm yourself down.
unless, of course, we’re talking about a college football playoff. then TBL deserves all the bashing he can handle, and then some.
February 18th, 2011 at 9:03 AM
in the 40′s up here, and it’s already started. God bless white people.

dude, get a tripod and take it on your trip. a tripod is a must have. you can buy short tripods pretty cheaply ~$10-$15. you need a tripod though, brah.
February 18th, 2011 at 9:04 AM
FWIW, I can’t wait to go skiing tomorrow.
February 18th, 2011 at 9:05 AM
TBL, glad I wasn’t around for your Joe Banner takedown nonsense last night. Your boy John Gonzalez would be proud of that crap.
February 18th, 2011 at 9:05 AM
He should have taken it down in my opinion, but that was his call. I wasn’t offended by it, but I’m hard to offend I suppose.

I have an EOS Rebel XT, 350D. Yeah I was looking at a Tamron. I was also looking at either of these.
February 18th, 2011 at 9:05 AM
do you have any fast prime lenses? if you plan to take any shots on the ship, if you use a telephoto you’ll need a nice flash at night. w/ a fast prime lens, like the 50 f/1.8 (probably around $100), you’ll never need a flash.
February 18th, 2011 at 9:06 AM
Here in Minneapolis it was in the 50′s the past two days, melted 40 to 50% of our snow pack. I did not see any shorts or really tanned legs unfortunately. Soon though.
This morning 21 with more snow coming. Yeehaw motherfucker.
February 18th, 2011 at 9:06 AM

February 18th, 2011 at 9:07 AM
of course its a blog and he can give his opinion. as can i. as can the other folks that agreed the post was stupid and classless.
You find it admirable that TBL “stuck to his guns” yesterday, but find it “comical” that we stuck to our guns and disagreed with him. hmmmm.

February 18th, 2011 at 9:08 AM
that’s a pretty solid lens, great for daytime shots. like i said in my other post, a nice 50mm f/1.8 lens, like the link below, will pay off big time. i picked one up for my nikon for my honeymoon and i barely took it off the camera. so light, didn’t need flash in lowlight situations.

It was sunny and gorgeous outside last weekend and my brother and I went to hit some balls. I think every golfer in a 5 mile radius had the same idea. The place was absolutely slammed. I did start to try and figure out how to hit a draw for the first time and was actually successful on a few.
/still years away from trying it on a course

One of my friend thinks Scottie Pippen was more important to the bulls championship run than michael jordan. I know I shouldn’t argue with someone holding such a stupid opinion, but we’ve been fighting about this for the past 10 years.
February 18th, 2011 at 9:12 AM
It’s fantastic.

//but i’ll have fun with it
February 18th, 2011 at 9:14 AM
I think it’s a preferance thing, but I almost never use a flash…adjust shutterspeeds, aperture, iso, and white balance. I guess that’s why I insist on using a tripod. I’ll be looking into that lens you linked up though.
February 18th, 2011 at 9:14 AM

I’m not a fan of their cool wraps. They are always a bit dry for me and don’t have very much flavor. I wanted to like them, too, but I was pretty disappointed.
February 18th, 2011 at 9:17 AM

I have a pic somewhere of you taking a pic of Tiger’s yacht and you’re holding the camera about 3 feet in front of you. I’ll see if I can find it.
February 18th, 2011 at 9:20 AM
Meh. I want flavor in the wrap itself, not gobs of sauce. With the exception of Chick-Fil-A sauce, which is a gift from the gods, their dressings and such are the one weak spot for me. An upgrade there would be excellent.
February 18th, 2011 at 9:21 AM

Devang – I have a 55-250 Cannon. It’s very nice, especially for the money. The baseline 75-300 Cannon is not good, but the 70-300 is. Problem I’ve heard with Tamron lenses is that they are slower focusing then Cannon’s lenses. As for tripods, go with a Joby Gorillapod. They’re freaking sweet.
February 18th, 2011 at 9:27 AM
It was kind of a stupid thing for him to say. Come on now.

People are either too lazy (I hope) or deliberately omit the second half of the quote. TBL, which is typical of anyone looking to write something sensational but only put 15 minutes of work in, didn’t bother listening to the interview I’m sure. Second half of the quote was “of course we’d trade all of our playoff appearances for one of their SB victories.”
Sort of relevant to whether a person would consider him delusional, yeah?

He was making an argument about different ways to measure success. In the end he said the the SB title is the ultimate measure. I fail to see how it is any way controversial.
But it’s February and sports writers desperately need something to talk about. Although there’s never any excuse needed to write something stupid and unfair in the Philly papers.

I really wish there was a Chick-fil-A up here so I could see what all the hubub is about.
I had Chic-fil-A for the first time not too long ago. Honestly, I don’t really see what all the hub-bub is about. It’s a decent chicken sandwich, but it’s not life altering or anything. I’d much rather they have Culver’s down here… mmmmmm… butterburgers.

Chick-Fil-A has its own sauce … that ish is incredible. Everytime i go, i load up on 3-4 extras and then use them anytime i eat chicken. i really like their sauce. it’s the best.
I wish it were winter so we could freeze it into ice blocks and skate on it and melt it in the spring time and drink it!

Here’s a question for you guys…..
I go to the gym frequently. I’d say I’m in decent shape, I lift weights a few times a week and most of my cardio comes from spin class. I just got roped in to run a 5k though. I’m competitive and don’t want to finish dead last, so who’s got some knowledge to share on the best way to train for this? Diet, exercise, etc.
Run is in just over two months. Go.
February 18th, 2011 at 9:45 AM
dumbass, there’s pickle juice in the container that the extra pickles come in (usually the little carrot and raisin salad container). you get the same amount of pickle juice and usually get at least an extra pickle or two.

February 18th, 2011 at 9:46 AM
That’s my problem. I’m 5/10 from the major roads in the county, and it’s the ordinary fast food joints. If I lived on the southern part of the county, or downtown, I would have a better fast food experience. And fatter.
February 18th, 2011 at 9:46 AM
I couldn’t really argue with this.
February 18th, 2011 at 9:46 AM
Culvers in Minnesota & Wisconsin
February 18th, 2011 at 9:46 AM
it has nothing to do with the juice itself, it has to do with the flavor being PART of the sandwich. you can’t cook a stew by making the meat, potatoes and vegetables seperately and then throwing them in at the end, lawya.
February 18th, 2011 at 9:46 AM
So TBL links “Southerners are the least likely to exercise” and everyone talks about ChickFila. Maybe you southerners need to put down the fried chicken and get some exercise, which according to a provided link you do little of. Fatties.

JCK: Start running. Plain and simple. 5k isn’t crazy for someone in good shape. Just start running, and stretch. If its your first one, don’t worry about time or finishing last. That’s how you hurt yourself. Just start running and working on a good pace that allows you to finish 3 miles.

I ran cross country in high school (averaged 19-21 minutes). Back then we would do distance runs M/W (3-7 miles) and sprint workouts Tu/Th (lots of 200/400 meter dashes) to build up speed and endurance. After the run, do light lifting, focus on shoulders and triceps.

February 18th, 2011 at 9:51 AM
seriously, you’re an idiot. the flavor comes from the juice. you know how long it takes the sandwich to acquire that flavor? about 30 seconds. it’s not marinated in pickle juice. the chicken is in a warming drawer in a seperate container from the pickels. the buns are in their own warming drawer. they don’t come into contact with each other at all until the sandwich is made, throw in the bag, and placed in the chute with the heat lamps. the sandwich is supposed to be sold within a matter of a few minutes or it’s already considered too old. IT ONLY TAKES MINIMAL CONTACT TO GET THE FLAVOR.
February 18th, 2011 at 9:51 AM
Run is in just over two months. Go.
Is it a highly competitive 5K or just a run for charity/etc.? 5K really isn’t very far. Back in the day, when I decided to start running, I just ran every-other day and increased the distance each time. Once I got to the distance I wanted, I started timing myself, and went from there. 2 months shouldn’t be a problem. If it’s not a super competitive race, you should have no problem finishing middle of the pack or higher.

I don’t think 5Ks are too hard. That’s a good distance to run a race if you haven’t before. I think if you’re in good shape you should be able to do fine if you start to run and build you endurance. The neighborhood/community I live in is very hilly and running hills makes the 5K type races a piece of cake since the courses are usually pretty flat. Most 5Ks I’ve encountered are usually for a charity so many people are there to support the charity and aren’t necessarily serious runners or out to win the race. Good luck.

Michigan has always been one of the highest paying states for teachers. Especially the suburban detroit districts. When you factor in cost of living, Michigan is easily the highest paying state in the union for teachers.

best fried pickels I’ve EVER had.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:08 AM
Nope. No way, no how. I’ll drink water before I drink a shitty light beer.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:08 AM
Boo teachers?
February 18th, 2011 at 10:08 AM
i don’t think you need flowers if you walk in the door stating today is conception day. that’s pretty romantic enough.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:09 AM
I’ve never had a fried pickle. But it sounds/looks delicious.
Anybody know where you can get one in Chicago?
February 18th, 2011 at 10:09 AM
Don’t ever try to tell a public school teacher what a great racket they have. It’s like asking an old person how they feel on any given day.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:09 AM
Nah brah, I’m in the Princeton area. The closest Chick-Fil-A is the garbage fire mall known as Quaker Bridge, Five Guys is either Ewing or North Brunswick and Chiptole is also North Brunswick.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
Wanting to have a kid born on a day like that makes me think you would name the kid ESPN or Peyton.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
Also, you have to look at the education level of that teacher. Michigan uses a sliding pay scale (you get raises based on experience and college credits). Maybe this teacher busted her ass and got 2 masters degrees, which would put her at the highest pay scale for most districts (BA + 60 credits).
February 18th, 2011 at 10:12 AM
It’s Miz, so that kid is gonna be named Tee Martin.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:12 AM
What the….this is so wrong on so many levels.

Ouch. I used to work up in that area (near the Route 1 corridor) and you’re right….it does suck.

I miss drinking Vladimir like it was water back in college.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:15 AM
They are all over the south and southwest. Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Arizona, New. Mex.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:16 AM
Between Ketel One and Belvedere. Belvedere is the most overpriced, overrated crappy vodka on the market. I’d rather drink White Tavern than it.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:16 AM
We’ll agree to disagree. I always have a bottle of Ketel One or Belvedere. But Chopin is the tits.
/Ketel One, rocks, twist of lime, winner

Anyone else watch “The Battle for Marjah” last night?
February 18th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
All vodka is the same to me. I’d just as soon drink Phillips or Svedka than any of those and barely detect a difference.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
I think the same thing about Grey Goose. And I’m half french.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:18 AM

Good vodka on the rocks with a lemon and lime is the way to go. Looks ballerific and gets me to my happy place.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:19 AM
That racket is the only reason I really wanted to get into teaching. That and coaching… but you can coach without being a teacher for club sports. For instance, hockey. Information that would have been useful to me 18 months and $26,540 ago.
Also rocking a black sweater with great stripes (NOT V-NECK ASSHOLES) and a black undershirt today. Suck it fashionistas.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:20 AM
all vodka is the same in that any gin is better.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:20 AM
i’m in the Bill Simmons “Reggie Miller was overrated” camp. He was a one-trick pony who never even made a 2nd team all-NBA team, and he finished top 10 in scoring (PPG) once in his career, I think peoples’ opinions of him were artificially inflated by Spike Lee and MSG.
He’ll make it eventually, but he’s not an “inner circle” guy.

All of this. When you order a Ketel One on the rocks at a bar, people are impressed.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
Should of went with either a red (lgrw) or yellow undershirt.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
DAMNIT!!! fucking missed it.
was it good?
February 18th, 2011 at 10:23 AM

I don’t think I’ve had vodka at all in years, but I did not discriminate when I was 21. Phillips, Jim Beam, Premium, the Beast, it didn’t matter. They were all getting slayed.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
Jeans, light can canvas shirt, forest green Filson vest. Nothing better
February 18th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
you know what should’ve given you that feeling? the fact that the alexander the great, the brits and the soviets all got their shit pushed in by a bunch of overmatched yokels.
im fascinated by afghansitan.
im disgusted by pakistan letting bin laden and zawahiri set up shop without having to worry about getting chased.

Marjah was a Taliban stronghold (up to a thousand of the elite Taliban fighters in the city). The Marines dropped in, slowly took control of the city, and established a perimeter. The problem is the city was still surrounded by Taliban waiting to roll right back in as soon as the Marines left two months later.
The Afghan Security Forces were a JOKE. They got in the way more than anything.
The ROE were frustrating as well. They would call in airstrikes on buildings they were taking fire from and then wait up to 2 HOURS for approval, which 95% of the time, they were not granted.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
Another one of my favorites is pear flavored vodka, with a splash of mineral water. Not bad at all.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
Vodka tonics are fine, but I’ll take a vodka martini any day of the week.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
read “hunt for bin laden.”
granted, i haven’t seen battle for marjah, and a LOT has changed since 2002, but if you want to see afghan ally ineptitude and how ROE can destroy a task before it begins, there’s a good place to start.

These guys are going to get SLAUGHTERED when we withdraw. Almost all of the ASFs are Northern Afghans, as we can’t get any Pashtuns to fight against their brothers and cousins. And they SUCK. We are basically setting the table for a civil war when we leave. A civil war in which professional soldiers who had an AK placed in their crib will be going against a bunch of slapdicks. It will be like an NFL team going against a high school soccer team, in football.
February 18th, 2011 at 10:42 AM

Any of you guys who read Lone Survivor checked out Victory Point also? Its a Marine perspective of Operations Red Wings (and the subsequent mission Operation Whalers). I’m bout to dive into it on Monday.
