Mike Vick Made the Right Decision Passing on Oprah
Mike Vick: I totally ignored the Vick-Oprah madness this week, but I did enjoy this column by Phil Sheridan. “What if audience members – many of whom may be immune to Vick’s charms on the field – turned hostile? What if Winfrey and her producers decided it would be good television to bring one of the dogs rescued from his Bad Newz Kennelz onto the set? Some of the people who have adopted those dogs have been very critical of Vick; what if one of them caused Vick to lose his composure or, worse, his temper?” Vick made a good decision. He spent 21 months in jail. He had nothing to gain by going on Oprah. [Inquirer]

Who has gained anything by going on Oprah?
February 18th, 2011 at 1:28 PM
I think he, at some point, has to go on a non-sports centered show. I do agree that Oprah wasn’t it. In fact, I’d say he should avoid any show with an audience and the ability to pull “fast ones” on a guest.
Better stick to something like 60 Minutes or Piers Morgan.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:28 PM
I certainly have no problem with his canceling the apperance, and it was probably in his best interest. However as for this
I don’t see the guests of Oprah rioting and I can’t see Oprah going all trashy TV and bringing in the dogs as the big surprise. This is oprah, not the Jenny Jones show.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:29 PM
Isn’t this what agents and publicists are for? I’m thinking most people that go on these shows negotiate boundaries for the interview in advance.
Having said that, fuck Oprah. I still think she might be the Anti-Christ. It’s either her or Bieber.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:30 PM
Who has gained anything by going on Oprah?
Oprah.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:30 PM
shitload of people.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:31 PM
I hate that bitch Oprah, make up your mind of being skinny or fat. Your weight stories were sooooo 1989.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:32 PM
in this hypothetical, the people doing this would be just as big of assholes as vick was.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:32 PM
Was this a joke?
February 18th, 2011 at 1:32 PM
Dr. Phil I guess.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:33 PM
It would have been cool if he went on and a stage light fell on his head. fuck vick
February 18th, 2011 at 1:33 PM
Heavy sarcasm implied?

I can definitely get on board with this. Maybe both?

February 18th, 2011 at 1:37 PM
Well not James Frey. But yeah, this is silly.
Curious, mrejr, what has Vick done since he got out of prison that has made him seem an asshole to you?
February 18th, 2011 at 1:37 PM
Isn’t this what agents and publicists are for? I’m thinking most people that go on these shows negotiate boundaries for the interview in advance.
That only works if you’re someone with influence/pull enough to make that happen. Who is Mike Vick to Oprah besides the Dog Killer? She didn’t even know Drew Brees had a birthmark!
February 18th, 2011 at 1:37 PM
unfortunately for Vick he’ll never repair his image. if he does public services with dogs etc, then he’s just doing it for the cameras and PR, if he does it in private no one knows about it.
he’s best just to keep doing what he’s doing and let the media decide if he’s made ammends like every other celebrity.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:38 PM
You’re a towel.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:38 PM
I totally forgot about this. That was some awkward TV right there.
/I saw it on the soup
February 18th, 2011 at 1:38 PM
He shouldnt have said he was going to in the first place
February 18th, 2011 at 1:40 PM
Yeah, huge mistake saying “yes, I’d love to” when Oprah calls and asks you on her show.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:40 PM
The rumor was that several of the rescued dogs owners had called Oprah for tickets to sit in audience and she was going to accomodate.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:40 PM
Who has gained anything by going on Oprah?
Obama locked up the bored, middle-class white woman vote.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:40 PM
As a Vick hater, I agree with his. I’d almost hate him more if he went on this big PR tour trying to create this new image. It’s not going to change anyone’s minds at this point and will just look phony.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:41 PM
It’s not what he has done since jail, it was what he did before.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:41 PM
ok, maybe not as big of assholes, but they’d be assholes in their own special way.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:41 PM
Well, that seems weird. I heard one of the dog owners get interviewed a few weeks ago. He also is a writer for newspaper in Texas, I think. He seemed like a troll.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:41 PM
Speaking of battered and abused dogs, what is the Knicks plan now that Melo is going to Nets in sign and trade?
February 18th, 2011 at 1:42 PM
Most disappointed I’ve ever been going into an episode after learning of the premise
February 18th, 2011 at 1:42 PM
Yeah not all of the dog owners are like that nut Texas writer. My newspaper does stories from time to time on them because a lot live in my area.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:42 PM
remained alive.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:43 PM
So don’t agree with society’s definition for punishment and rehabilitation? Or don’t choose to believe a criminal when they say they regret what they’ve done and they are sorry? Or just Vick?
February 18th, 2011 at 1:44 PM
Jeez, you take a two hour lunch and come back and people are going at each other like Cats and Dogs (alternatively CRM and Fashion Sense).
I feel quite strongly that Packer fans should be banned, and possibly executed. Their belt wearing smugness significantly affects my ability to live in a utopian world where the Steelers have 7 rings.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:44 PM
i agree. the only way to know if the guy is a changed man is to know him personally before and after the fact. i didn’t know him before and i’ll never know him after. I won’t cheer for him, but i won’t have a grudge if someone chooses to. he’s done his time but no matter what he does i won’t be able to look at him and see what he did.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:44 PM
There can be only one! It’s written! (not confirmed by me)
Actually, you might be right. I can see Bieber riding around on Oprah’s shoulders Master Blaster-style at the onset of the apocalypse.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:44 PM
Roger Ebert really dislikes you. And he has a point.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:44 PM
slate was wiped clean because he went to jail for gambling. i guess I didn’t get that memo
February 18th, 2011 at 1:44 PM
you know how bad wisconsin fans in general are? id rather have had the steelers win the SB.
act like you’ve been there before.

February 18th, 2011 at 1:46 PM
I can think someone is an asshole for systematically fighting, torturing, and executing dogs no matter how much time they spent in prison.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:47 PM
Disliking Vick I can understand. Wishing harm upon him or somehow arguing that he deserves to be punished for the rest of his life I don’t.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:47 PM
Are you quite pleased the Leafs got Colborne and the B’s 1st for Kaberle?
Absolute thievery by the Leafs. Don’t forget about the conditional 2nd round pick (if B’s re-sign Kaberle or make the SCF).
February 18th, 2011 at 1:47 PM
Nice. I approve of this.

Making fun of cancer victims. Always a winning idea.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:49 PM
The Kessel deal was absolute thievery.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:49 PM
Also a good point…this guy didn’t go to jail for killing dogs. If he serves his 40 years (5 years for each of the eight dogs as stated by the law)…he can get off my asshole list.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:49 PM
Very. Rooting for the Bruins to make the Cup or re-sign him so we can pick up the conditional 2nd rounder as well. Have to love Burke bolstering the Flyers lineup and then immediately working on the Bruins afterwards. Not sure if that was by design but I’m sure it turned the heat up a little on the Bruins.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:50 PM
4 1st-rounders . . . . I wonder if they are protected in some way.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:50 PM
Tom Cruise.
/ and those audience members who got cars
February 18th, 2011 at 1:50 PM
he’s a bad person. i dont like bad people.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:50 PM
I think the only person who ever lost going on Oprah was Tom Cruise but he was hanging on by a thread anyhow
February 18th, 2011 at 1:51 PM
I guess this is what TBL was talking about.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:51 PM
Yup Vick went to jail, mrejr. Youre not allowed to call him an asshole anymore.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:52 PM
Jury is still out on that one. I think we have to see what those picks become before we call a winner in that one.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:52 PM
Don’t hold your breath.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:53 PM
I agree with this, and for whatever reason, Vick will just never rehab himself in some people’s eyes.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:54 PM
The Kessel deal was absolute thievery.
Agreed, but this deal eases some of the sting of that one, especially if they get the conditional 2nd. From all indications the difference between picking 6th (where BOS would pick if season ended today) and 24th (where TO would pick) is quite small.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:54 PM
Did you see last year’s playoffs? I’m not sure you can rule anyone out in the eastern conference.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:54 PM
4 1st-rounders . . . . I wonder if they are protected in some way.
That’s alot. Wow!
February 18th, 2011 at 1:54 PM
just wait until I autotune it.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:55 PM
Don’t hold your breath.
B’s and Flyers have to be the favorites in the East*.
*assuming Crosby isn’t himself when/if he returns this year
February 18th, 2011 at 1:56 PM
So he should be executed because of what he did? Not saying everyone has to agree 2 1/2 years was the right punishment to fit the crime, but he didn’t exactly get off scott free.
Not saying you have to like him at all just because he did time and has said he is regretful, but wishing death? Wow man.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:56 PM
wait whut?
February 18th, 2011 at 1:56 PM
that’s how it is with most people convicted of felonies. it’s called blowback. famous person commits a felony, part of the blowback is the public perception of them will always be tainted. any person with a felony on their record will have blowback when trying to do anything in life that requires a background check. it’s how it is, it’s how our society operates.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:57 PM
ok ok ok im a bad person for wanting vick to be dead. i dont care..what about carmelo and 4 1st rounders?
February 18th, 2011 at 1:57 PM

February 18th, 2011 at 1:58 PM
unfamous felons feel so sorry for them famous felons.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:58 PM
But I thought you didn’t like bad people?
February 18th, 2011 at 1:59 PM
it’s a vicious cycle
February 18th, 2011 at 2:00 PM
Even if Crosby comes back, they won’t have Malkin and I think they are thin (anorexic actually) at wing.
Actually, I’m keeping an eye on Washington. I’m hoping they stay half asleep. And Tampa looks frisky.

I think you’re overestimating what Malkin brought to the table.

I refuse to buy into Washington until they prove me wrong, they have essentially the same players from the last 2 years. TBL are a good story, but I think they get exposed in the playoffs the same way the Caps have.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:03 PM
If Melo goes to the Nets for that deal he isn’t serious about winning.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:04 PM
It’s a little more than that with Vick. It was a felony, in the legal sense, but in the court of public opinion, it’s more than that.
He offended, quite possibly, the most emotional, outspoken demographic ever: Hardcore dog owners.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:06 PM
Yup.
He’d essentially playing with the same roster(maybe worse?)and no first round picks for four years. WTF
February 18th, 2011 at 2:06 PM
I watched a good portion of the ‘Ning-Red Wing game last night (free NHL center ice preview!).
TB did not play with any kind of intensity at all and I saw them play, and look like world beaters just a couple of nights ago against the Flyers.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:07 PM
If Melo goes to the Nets for that deal he isn’t serious about winning.
That was evident when he said he would reconsider signing with Nuggets if he got that 3/65 contract.
Probably best thing for Knicks.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:08 PM
Guy in my hometown was walking home from the store when he was attacked by 3 Rotts. One went for his leg, while two went for his throat. As he tried to run to his building door step, they all grabbed him by the leg and pulled him back towards the street. These same dogs killed someone’s pet a month earlier. This guy is still in the hospital where they barely saved his leg. They caught the dogs and put their asses to sleep. Yet I guarantee you there are some crazed dog lovers who feel more sympathy for those dogs being killed than the dude layed up in the hospital. Fuck a dog, and fuck people who place more love for dogs than people.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:08 PM
When Bylsma puts Malkin and Crosby out at the same time (as he did on occasion), it’s almost not fair.
When Malkin is motivated, he’s an absolute terror (and as a Flyers season ticket holder, I’ve seen it too many times up close). I don’t get the impression that he likes the physical part of the game. Not like Crosby, who seems to raise his level when he gets knocked about (recent concussion issues, notwithstanding).

The first sentence is the key. I’ll grant him a bit of a pass this year as he was battling injuries even before the year-ending tear. But he’s was playing much easier minutes than Crosby was and I expect more for an $8.7M cap hit.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:18 PM
Which happens less than you think. He is a Russian afterall.
I think people are underestimating our defense. Getting rid of Gonchar, adding Paul Martin and Michalek, and the greatly improved Letang has kept this team afloat the past month. Plus MAF is having a career year, minus October.
/oh and the #1 penalty kill
//we will lose in the 2nd round
February 18th, 2011 at 2:24 PM
Mike Vick sucks.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:24 PM
I get this and do really like Vick.
I do not wish him harm and don’t think others should, but your past actions should follow you. He has paid his debt, so I am not saying he should get more prison time, but that doesn’t mean people should forget what he did. If that causes him to experience extra stress, then to bad. Reprehensible actions have consequences beyond legal punishment.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:28 PM
Not that’s it’s surprising, but you’ve just provided as classic a textbook strawman argument as I’ve ever seen.
February 18th, 2011 at 3:02 PM
i bet if you found the owner of the dogs you’d find it was a place that fostered violent behavior, too. and it’s not like vick brutalized his dogs to save someone else’s life.
February 18th, 2011 at 3:04 PM
You can call it whatever, but all of this consternation over a bunch of dogs is annoying. If Vick was fighting chickens, there wouldn’t be nearly the amount of outrage or assignment of evil to him. I guess, lucky for cock fighters, there haven’t been sappy movies or tv shows made about chickens.
February 18th, 2011 at 4:19 PM
chicken little says know your history…and that the sky is falling
February 18th, 2011 at 5:34 PM
I’m extremely tempted to purchase/wear a Mike Vick jersey after reading this, but it’d be pointless because I know no one would say shit to my face.
