Mark Cuban Creates “Radical Football LLC” to Promote a College Football Playoff
Mark Cuban was serious. He has created Radical Football LLC. He has at least one staff member. He wants “to impact college football so that the last two teams playing are the best two teams.” In plain terms he will push for a college football playoff.
A playoff push is only as valid as the plan. Cuban’s only commitment thus far has been to find the best possible one. He supported San Diego State’s “International Sports MBA Case Competition,” where business students had 24 hours to spell out an acceptable playoff plan. The winners from Oxford will present their 16-team plan to him later this year.
My one concern is the name, “Radical” Football. The word has negative political connotations. Big Ten traditionalists are “Legends” and “Leaders.” Jim Delaney is no “radical.” The title places an unnecessary stigma on the idea of a playoff. It fuels paranoia rather than quashing it. The Big Bad BCS guys want you to see a playoff as “radical” and scary. The change would be radical, but a playoff is sensible and optimal.

I hope he has at least one member of the Ninja Turtles on staff.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:51 PM
But which one?
February 18th, 2011 at 1:51 PM
I assume this will work as well as his UFL and MLB investments.
He’ll always have that one Western Conference Champions notch on his belt tho.

san diego state and oxford…two places that eat, sleep and breathe college football.
it’s really simple…if you don’t like the way college football’s business is conducted, don’t watch. you don’t have the right to suggest change just because you’re a billionaire.
why is it that the only people clamoring for a playoff are people who don’t care about college football*?

“Radical Football” – my god that’s gay.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:57 PM
why is it that the only people clamoring for a playoff are people who don’t care about college football*?
I would say that would be the exact opposite.

Are Bill and Ted the execs of Cuban’s marketing dept?
February 18th, 2011 at 2:01 PM
Nothing is going to come of this. I’m sure NCAA Presidents and ADs do not appreciate being dictated to by an eccentric billionaire outsider.
If you are proponent of a playoff system, why not focus all your efforts on the next logical step, a +1 format.
Once you get that, then push for an 8 team playoff.
These pipe dreams of a 16 team playoff are great in theory, but they are not grounded in reality.

winners don’t propose a 16-team playoff.
/there are at most five or six teams each year that deserve a shot at the national championship
February 18th, 2011 at 2:04 PM
Nice, Spencer. You are hitting every comment out of the park today.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:05 PM
Coop, I’m pretty sure Cuban graduated from Indiana.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:05 PM
Exactly. There is no need for a 16 team playoff. Especially any playoff that involves the MAC and the Sun Belt.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:06 PM
Count me on the side for a playoff, but not 16 teams. Fuck that noise.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:07 PM
what do you mean, “Don’t care about college football?”
February 18th, 2011 at 2:09 PM
If Cuban was really smart, he start an alternative to the NCAA rather than instead of trying to get them to adopt a playoff format.
Create a junior league for 18-22 year-olds, pay the players, have an education plan, provide benefits, put on TV, have a regular season and PLAYOFFS!!!. At 21, send them off to the NFL or college. If they can’t/won’t go one of those routes, wish them the best of luck and hope they were smart with the money you gave them.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:09 PM
I think he may be referring to casual fans with no vested interest in any particular team (or conference, for you SEC fans).
February 18th, 2011 at 2:09 PM
i didn’t get a chance to join the MLB drinking thread, but i’m offended that Wade Boggs is not on that list.
you’re better than that, hernia.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:09 PM
Scarlet, I was talking about the 1 employee of this powerful company, “Morris, who has a degree in sport management from UMass.”
A person who doesnt have a favorite team, and if they do they didnt actually go there. If this favorite team loses, you dont really care. A person who rarely, if ever attend games.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:10 PM
Ah, gotcha Coop.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:11 PM
Do we need to start the whole hardcore fan debate based on in person attendance again?

February 18th, 2011 at 2:12 PM
Here we go again….
February 18th, 2011 at 2:13 PM
Its relevant in this case because in my experience the vast majority of “playoff people” only consume CFB on TV. I’ve had arguments with some of my best friends who are huge CFB fans, and almost exclusively the ones who want a playoff have literally never stepped foot in a stadium.

I’m always pissed Tiger never plays there – historic course plus they gave him a sponsors exemption when he was 15-16 years old. He should show loyalty.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:18 PM
This whole LLC is comical…but I’m sure you’ve made it out to be some landmark corporation that will carry the country into the next generation.
Seriously though. This is retarded.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:18 PM
NO. But there is a difference between genuinely wanting what is best for the game and just wanting to shake shit up. As I said earlier, if you really want to see a playoff system then you must know that the practical first step is a +1.
In any enormous institution, change comes incrementally. By beating the bloody corpse of the 16 team playoff horse, you are in effect wasting your time, because they are not going from the BCS directly to a 16 team playoff. Therefore, it is logical to surmise that you do not really care about the sport and you just want to yell and make loud noises, because your agenda has exactly 0% chance of coming to fruition. If you are a true college football fan, be a realist, and get behind the realistic evolution that is the +1 system.

February 18th, 2011 at 2:26 PM
This sounds suspiciously like Canadian Junior Hockey….not that that’s a bad thing.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:26 PM
I think you have me confused with someone who wants a playoff. I want a return to the old bowl system.
I just think the idea that you have to go to games to be a hardcore fan is asinine.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:27 PM
Thats two more games than most complainers have attended in their life.
I didnt say you have to have season tickets, but you have to understand the way a big games FEELS in person because I dont want a bloated playoff to render regular season games meaningless robbing me of that crazy energy inside and outside the stadium before a big game.
If youve never felt it you wouldnt know.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:27 PM
But you do realize that this will not happen before a +1, right?

HAHA!

Yes. But not 16 teams.
Then according to some posts, no you are not a real fan. Please ask the people that sit around you at the games and they will obviously set you straight.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:28 PM
Excuse me as I go look this up on my cell phone.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:29 PM
This would be better than the current system. Games shouldn’t be played after Jan. 1. Only like 20 bowl games. Sigh. That will never ever happen though. So, moving forward, let’s get a +1, then in a few years expand it to 8.
/fuck the sun belt and all those pussy conferences
February 18th, 2011 at 2:29 PM
Harbaugh, I was directing this at 16-team playoff proponents who profess to be true college football fans.

February 18th, 2011 at 2:31 PM
I don’t think having an 8-team playoff would ruin the regular season at all.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:31 PM
I agree with 8 team playoff also.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:32 PM
Very similar concept. Minor tweak would be paying the players a meaningful, middle-class wage as opposed to the small stipend CHL players get. The age range is also a skewed a little older for the football league as opposed to the CHL.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:32 PM
4 wouldnt (everyone is on board a +1), 8 you start to, 16 and its college basketball.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:32 PM
So the #1 seeds of the culture tourney will be her, playoffs, the dougie, and ?????
February 18th, 2011 at 2:32 PM

February 18th, 2011 at 2:32 PM
How about a selection committee like the tourney? And let the 9th team bitch all they want to. It’s better making a “mistake” on the 8th team in a playoff then the 2nd team in the championship game.

February 18th, 2011 at 2:35 PM
You’ll get the same argument OHL, CHL and the others get. How do these kids get an education then, especially the ones that don’t go pro?
February 18th, 2011 at 2:36 PM
Give the higher seeds a home game in the first round. This way, teams that make it through the season unscathed are rewarded.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:36 PM
You’ll get the same argument OHL, CHL and the others get. How do these kids get an education then, especially the ones that don’t go pro?
Every year you play in the CHL you get a year of books/tuition completely paid for provided you don’t sign a pro contract (and in some cases you can play 1/2 of the year in the ECHL and still collect your full scholarship).
February 18th, 2011 at 2:38 PM
For the record, I am cool with an 8 team playoff. But I realize its not happening before a +1.
/Off to the golf course! Peace out players!
February 18th, 2011 at 2:38 PM
Because the Big East and ACC and their 4 loss champ suddenly become relevant. Its would never be the best 8 teams, but the 6 conf champs and 2 others.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:38 PM
Read the original comment. Education plan is part of the concept. You can’t force a kid to get an education but you can provide incentives and make the option more attractive.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:39 PM
I’m fine with that.

February 18th, 2011 at 2:41 PM

February 18th, 2011 at 2:41 PM
I’d like to see a top 4 teams playoffs. That way, you don’t take away home games from any teams. You don’t mess with the bowl structure and $600k salaries for their chairs. And I dont remember ever thinking that the #5 BCS team was the best in the country or deserved a shot at it. Really it’s always between 2,3 or rarely 4 teams that deserve it.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:50 PM
I believe you’ve had direct experience with this and I’ve always been curious how much CHL teams take education seriously? I’ve heard differing accounts, and always wonder if teams encourage the players to study and get their education.
February 18th, 2011 at 2:58 PM
I don’t want a playoff.
/attends at least one Purdue game a season
//would be okay with a +1
February 18th, 2011 at 3:07 PM
Really? This is bullshit. The BCS has done a pretty damn good job of making sure the two best teams play at the end of the year. 2004* a notable exception. What Cuban and the rest of you haters want is an opportunity for TCU to upset somebody in the first round. That’s it.
* the 2004 Auburn team would beat every other national champion in the decade and would have beat the 2010 Auburn team by 2 scores.
February 18th, 2011 at 3:13 PM
1994 PSU would have mopped the floor with them.
Sometimes not winning makes a team even more memorable, and always adds to the great discussion.
February 18th, 2011 at 3:17 PM
* the 2004 Auburn team would beat every other national champion in the decade and would have beat the 2010 Auburn team by 2 scores.
Really? Because I’m pretty sure the 2001 Miami Hurricanes produced more high level talent for the NFL than any other team ever (no hyperbole) and I’m fairly certain that they win almost every logical comparison that’s ever been made like this
February 18th, 2011 at 3:26 PM
Shit, forgot about ’01. I could go all the way back to ’02 in my head of former champions. I will defer to Miami but it would be a hell of a game based on NFL talent.
February 18th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
cowherd said it best…
ohio state loses to wisconsin in basketball…great game, but it doesn’t matter. OSU’s still gonna be a 1 or 2 seed and wisky’s still gonna be a 2-4 seed.
ohio state loses to wisconsin in football…the pac-10 cares, the SEC cares, the big XII cares. OSU fans feel like their season is over. why? because it effectively knocked an NC caliber team from the NC game. everyone knows what you have to do going in…go undefeated (or lose once if you’re in the SEC).
you just don’t get that with a playoff. every game doesn’t matter with a playoff.
February 18th, 2011 at 3:45 PM
i think that 2002 team had more talent, actually.
/and they lost to a certain scarlet and gray adorned team
February 18th, 2011 at 3:48 PM
(or lose twice if you’re LSU).
Never forget
February 18th, 2011 at 3:51 PM
Not one thing changes if you have a +1.
February 18th, 2011 at 3:54 PM
But for some reason thats not good enough for playoff people. Even though it easily the most realistic and exciting option.
February 18th, 2011 at 3:55 PM
that’s not a playoff…that’s the best idea.
February 18th, 2011 at 3:56 PM
I think a +1 is the more realistic option. I do think an 8-team playoff could work. But there would be a lot to figure out.
