Aaron Rodgers Wins Super Bowl MVP As Packers Pass, Pass, and Pass Some More
Two weeks ago, I talked about the Pittsburgh defense and how the Packers should adopt a pass heavy strategy and put it on Aaron Rodgers to get the ball out and win the game. They did just that, and Aaron Rodgers delivered, more than justifying his selection as the Super Bowl MVP.
How much did they pass? The 13 official rush attempts are tied for the fifth fewest by a team in the Super Bowl. It is tied with the 1999 St. Louis Rams for the fewest rush attempts by a Super Bowl winner. The Saints last season were the only other Super Bowl winner to rush the ball 20 or fewer times in the game. Including sacks as pass attempts, only those 1999 Rams threw the ball a higher percentage of the time.
Keep in mind, though, that quarterback kneels are official rush attempts. Discounting Rodgers’ two kneeldowns at the end of the game, and Starks’ first down run to end the first half, I think it’s fair to say that the Packers adopted the most pass aggressive game plan for a Super Bowl winner. They did what they had to do, spread the field with 3 to 4 receivers, forced more people into coverage, and really took advantage of a clearly less than healthy Troy Polamalu.
Green Bay threw the ball on 14 of 19 first downs (and one of the runs was that Starks play at the end of the half). Rodgers wasn’t that successful on first down (6 of 13, 1 sack, 75 yards and 3 first downs), but he made up for it by being brilliant on third down. I think Rodgers played every bit as brilliantly as he did in Atlanta, with the difference in success rate being in the defenses he faced. Check out these numbers, which mirrored what I felt like watching it:
6 for 11, 5 first downs, 138 yards passing, 1 sack. Those include a drop by Jones and the Swain challenge on the drop. Even with those drops, Rodgers averaged almost 12 yards an attempt. Most of those were on third and long, and only one (the first touchdown to Nelson) was on less than 3rd and 5.
It was a brilliant performance, and should put to bed, in emphatic fashion, this amazing “Aaron Rodgers is a choker” talk that was present just a few months ago.
The other thing that came up was the decision by McCarthy to kick the field goal from the Pittsburgh 5 to go up 31-25. TBL and I thought he should have gone for the touchdown there. If the Steelers had scored on that final drive to win, it would be the lead story of the day. Because Green Bay won, it’s a footnote. Brian Burke confirms that going for it was pretty strongly the right call. I threw out 40% chance to score and win; the correct number was close at 37%. More amazingly (and just another indictment of conservative coaching in the NFL), the chances of winning were actually higher if Green Bay failed to convert, than if they successfully made the field goal and kicked off. A missed field goal would have also paradoxically gave them a better chance than a make, because coaches play for the tie when the option is there.
Fortunately for Green Bay, not putting the ball in Rodgers’ hand to win it outright one more time didn’t cost them. Now, he can put on the title belt after coming off the top rope all post-season.

I’ll never tire of that photo

I like where the recent comments/posts section is now.

Listen, I’m not going to downplay the outstanding game that Rodgers had but… I would have voted for Jennings coming up large in the absence of Driver and with Nelson dropping everything thrown his way.
It seemed like every time they needed a 3rd down conversion, Jennings was open or coming up with a tough catch.
Incredible.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:09 AM
Apparently, that’s a UFC championship belt that was given to Rodgers by Dana White and Chuck Liddell.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
Turns out the two easiest prop bets were Kuhn 5.5 yards over/under (didn’t even get a carry) and if BJ Raji is in on a play on offense (don’t think he was)
February 7th, 2011 at 10:12 AM
He was good, but he wasn’t kick to the face good.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:12 AM
They did try to go for a TD… on the first 3 plays. Kick the FG and don’t wet the bed about Big Ben and his amazing hype as Elway reincarnate. Aka trust your defense.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:12 AM
4 times. 4 catches. I think he had a pretty bad drop too.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:13 AM
i think going for it was definitely the right move. but they won, so …
February 7th, 2011 at 10:13 AM
4 catches for 64 yards isn’t going to win any sort of game MVP award…the first TD and the 3rd and 10 late in the game were great throws/catches
Not sure about going for it on 4th down or if any coach would have…the Steelers had burned two timeouts already and needed a touchdown, I agreed with the decision at the time
February 7th, 2011 at 10:14 AM
This just shows that truly the best deserve to hold the gold.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:14 AM
I got burned by the Sanders injury. I had Quarless rec yards > Randle El rec yards, knowing that Randle El wouldn’t even see the field on offensive plays barring injury.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:14 AM
That seam route throw to Jennings was beautiful. I love that play probably more than any other in football. Throwing a bullet between two guys & hitting a guy in full stride.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:15 AM
He did not, was expecting it on that final drive when they had 1st and goal at the three but took a sack instead of trying to run it closer
February 7th, 2011 at 10:16 AM
I think if the Steelers had more timeouts, McCarthy would have been more inclined to go for it. But I like the idea of forcing the opponent’s hand there. They can’t even flirt with the idea of tying or winning. The play calling for Pittsburgh gets a lot more predictable knowing that they HAVE to score a td.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
this.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:19 AM
Is it all Super Bowl all day, TBL? Not complaining and wouldn’t be surprised if it is, but I’m just curious. Any baseball slated? Like a Pujols post or anything?
February 7th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
Definitely the right move based on…. previous teams going for it on 4th and 5 when a FG means taking a FG to tie out as a possibility? Does that happen often? Ever? Especially when a run is out of the question?
February 7th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
It was, but for my money the best throw of the game was Big Rape’s TD throw to Wallace.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
disagree completely. with only a 3 point defecit the steelers could have just tied it and gone into OT, where they would have a better chance of winning even if they didn’t get the ball first. this was a smart play by GB, probably impacted by the new OT rules.
make Pitt drive for a TD to win instead of an abbreviated drive for an easy tie. Pitt only had 1 time out and the 2 minute warning, GB had 2 and the two minute warning. even with a quick drive by the steelers for a score (TD or FG) the packers still had a chance to go downfield for the winning drive.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
this…what a beautiful throw.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
Of course no coach in their right mind would even think of going for it. But it’s easy to play armchair-QB from your living room when the consequences of the play-calling effect you in no meaningful way whatsoever.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
been arguing with a friend (pakers’ fan) for over a year now that Rodgers is better than Favre. he said the only way that would ever be realistic is if Rodgers wins more SBs than Favre. Safe to say that he’s well on his way, not that it’s a lock he wins another.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
Like the one Rodgers threw to James Jones that he dropped. That would have been six.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
I’m disappointed but I do like GB, and those fans have had a couple of rough years. Silver lining is that Farve had a worse day than Steeler fans.
Karma-cally speaking, it probably wasnt the Steelers year.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
Favre HATES all of this.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
Last night in my drunken stupor after hearing Jones talking about Rodgers and saying “He’s dealt with a lot of adversity” I shouted at the TV “YOU’RE HIS ADVERSITY!”…he can’t just drop some 5 yard hitch on 1st down, always has to be at the most crushing time
February 7th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
He wasn’t mentioned by name until after the game, was he?
February 7th, 2011 at 10:30 AM
I believe both that and the number of times FOX showed Jerrah hit the under…wish I could have bet on if cameras would catch Cameron Diaz feeding A-Rod popcorn
February 7th, 2011 at 10:30 AM
I know we touched on this previously, but this thing going on with the tickets at the SB is just making me crack up. I’d like to believe Jerrah still has some clout and that there is going to be one sorry Fire Marshall this week.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
my personal favorite is how people invested money with art schlicter for SB tix. dumbasses.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
This was my thinking during the game. Pittsburgh being down to 1 time out was huge in that it also made the stakes of calling for a replay even higher had it come up.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
I bash Favre enough, but I’ll give him one credit, since Curt Menefee alluded to it. Favre WAS the MVP of his Super Bowl. They just mistakenly gave it to Desmond Howard.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
I’m just happy and relieved I have zero allegiance to Favre again, while Packers fans have to begrudgingly talk themselves back into accepting him and retiring his number and all that. Well they don’t HAVE to but most will. Suckers.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
did anyone else think the steelers’ last drive was wasting far too much time? when hines (i think) got stopped for that 5 yard gain, it seemed like it took 40 seconds for the steelers to get off another play.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
you can believe whoever comes up with the crazy prop bets will have somethind like this next year.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
At least nobody was paralyzed at the game that we know of.
/practice facility’d
February 7th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
If you were a ticket holder how pissed would you be? Being compensated 3x face value of your ticket is a nice little apology. I would probably still be really mad, traveling all the way down there to freeze outside and watch on a screen
February 7th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
Mike Wallace didn’t know what the fuck he was supposed to be doing.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
Fuck that. He deserved not to get it on that lame ass celebration on his TD pass to Rison in the first quarter, running off the field with his helmet in his hand and that goofy ass grin. What a jackball. The Pats had it down to 7 when Howard ran it back, it was a huge momentum changer by heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeem.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
Just insane. I still don’t get how he pulled that one over.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
YES. I was shouting at the TV. So annoying.
Also, props to Hines Ward for having a good game when I thought he’d do less than nothing but still get heaps of praise.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
I hope the armed forces doesn’t whore out the MOH winner like the guys from Mount Suribachi. I hope he can find some well-deserved peace.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
Yes. They took forever to get going after that catch. I’d love to know the patterns of the receivers on that 4th down call. Looked like a bunch of hitches.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
I thought Reggie White would get it, that poor right tackle got abused in a way that made me feel bad for him a little bit…Favre was off target most of that game (finished 14/27) save for the two big throws
February 7th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
did anyone else think the steelers’ last drive was wasting far too much time? when hines (i think) got stopped for that 5 yard gain, it seemed like it took 40 seconds for the steelers to get off another play.
looked similar to the redskins’ 2-minute offense. very mcnabb-esq.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
part of his job now is to make public appearances. He’s never going to see the battlefield again, and as long as he has time left to serve this is what he’ll be doing.
i think the military will handle things better this time, at least i hope they would.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
This. For a team/quarterback that is usually good in these situations, it looked like they’d never run the 2 minute drill before. I was shocked and screaming at the TV. Awful, and that’s on Ben. That 2 minute package has always been his as far as playcalling goes. He was moving receivers all over the field for no reason.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
Favre WAS the MVP of his Super Bowl. They just mistakenly gave it to Desmond Howard.
Howard had 244 all-purpose yards (SB Record), including the game-changing TD. This still stands up as pretty legit.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
Didnt understand the previous drive either. Down 2 scores and they are huddling and snapping it with 2 seconds on the play clock. Run the damn no huddle and let Ben call the plays.
Mike Wallace is a nice player, but he’s no Santonio.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
That’s like saying Tracy Porter was the MVP of Super Bowl XLIV.
It was one play
February 7th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Now that football is over, what am I supposed to do with my Sundays?
February 7th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Like the one Rodgers threw to James Jones that he dropped. That would have been six.
I almost threw my remote through my television. Game is over if he catches that perfect pass.
/Then I saw it was Jones, and just nodded my head.
//Seen it about 6 times this year
February 7th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Speaking of McNabb… he was HAMMERED at the UFC fight on Saturday night. I expected Rex Grossman to come down and take his seat when the main event started.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
Now I’m curious. Do you update your name every year? Were you 45yearslump just a few months ago?
/inquiring minds
February 7th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
Has anyone listened to Cowherd today? If so, is he still defiant about Rodgers or has he backed down like the little bitch he can be?
February 7th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
If I remember correctly, the jackass who kept having to be readjusted was Randle El. Multiple plays in a row Ben had to get him lined up to the detriment of actually letting everyone else know what route patterns were called.
Fuck Randle El (even if it wasn’t him).

OT:
I know TBL may have caught some crap during his “relaunch” but the new version of The Big Lead is still light years better than the redesign of Deadspin. It’s the Black Eyed Peas halftime show of sports blog designs. Christ, it’s awful.
END OT

It’s been cold down here lately but back up to 68 this weekend. Boom. I bought a practice mat and some plastic balls for the backyard as well. Had the wifey out there filming my shitty swing still trying to get it fixed. My model this year is Bill Haas. Dudes swing is awesome.

His sermon on how the Japanese could turn a watch into a TV was pretty jaw-dropping as well.

The leaderboard at the Phoenix right now absolutely blows. I hope the cream rises to the top at Augusta. None of this Two Glove Tommy/Mark Wilson crap.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
and how did McCarthy not win COY? with all the injuries to that team and they still made the playoffs… Bill really didn’t need another one.

I know there’s gonna be a lockout and all that. But if there’s not, who does Green Bay open with on Thursday night: Bears or Saints?

Every year when the Browns are officially eliminated, it changes by a year. Although I do realize that I could really change it to 75yearslump and not be worried at all. They’ve been an expansion team since ’99.
/I do miss the rivalry though

Did Deadspin do the same redesign as the other Gawker websites? I hate how Jalopnik and Gizmodo are now.

February 7th, 2011 at 10:46 AM

February 7th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
Pull for Dufner – former Auburn Tiger. Two Gloves is a perfect gimmick, especially this time of year.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
stay classy, faggot.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
McCarthy did a fantastic job, especially the latter part of the regular season and playoffs. But they weren’t the only ones with injuries, Pats lost one of their starting DEs and their #1 CB in the preseason, and Kevin Faulk in week 2. Their defense was young and porous and they went 14-2. It’s a regular season award, just because BB doesn’t need another one doesn’t mean he didn’t deserve it.

It probably has as much to do with your weight transfer as it does your wrists. I’ve had the same problem lately. My sequence is off, wrists break to early, and I’m lifting the ball at impact.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
use your hips. if you’re swinging with your arms, you’re not going to generate any power.

February 7th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
Packers play at ATL so it won’t open there. Only home games that would be considered are Bears or Saints like Breesus said and I’d guess they take Bears because of NFCC rematch, Chicago market and a divisional game.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:53 AM

They go to Atlanta, again.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
Hope so. At Lambeau too so we can get that one out of the way early.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
you know what they say
18 is legal everywhere
17 in some states
16 if their mom says its ok
15 if their dad is in the room
/ TCAP logic
February 7th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
He was hitting some 17 year old right? Thats not illegal but wouldnt a video of it be?
It’s legal in NY, but if it happened in CA then I’m pretty sure the age of consent is 18. The attorney she hired was located in CA…. so…
February 7th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
The biggest reason why I think they might say no to the Bears is because it’s likely to be scheduled as the last game of the year. And if NBC takes it opening day, then it can’t be flexed (as was the case this year when NBC was forced to take Seahawks-Rams)
February 7th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
Again? Why would they do that?
/Indy at New England again for no damn reason
February 7th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Oh, wow. This site is telling me they play at home, but I guess its wrong. I know it would be a home game, but I just don’t think NFL Network would want a divisional game as the opening game. I don’t think they’ve done that before.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Not sure how the scheduling works, but I don’t see them having Chi coming to Lambeau in Week 17 back-to-back years. I could see NBC scheduling the Saints and having a battle of the last two SB champs, but GB/Chi is a ratings bonanza.
February 7th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
my favorite is trevor immelman’s. it’s hogan’s swing, carbon copied.
Last fall after my shoulder rehab, I went through Five Fundamentals again and my iron game has become the best it ever has. Cleaned up a few small improvements in my posture. His ideas for generating swing speed are awesome. Cant wait to hit off grass again.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
Is it NFLN or NBC that does the opener…NBC, right?
February 7th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
That’s how the schedule played out. Last time the NFC North played the entire NFC South, Atlanta played at Green Bay. That was in 2008.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:01 AM
Good point.
That’s the way it is set up in the schedule rotation. They don’t just say “Fuck it, play these two teams”. There’s a system.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:01 AM
my favorite is trevor immelman’s. it’s hogan’s swing, carbon copied.
i have a hard time giving credit to people under 5’10″ for their swing. it’s much more difficult for the taller, longer players.
fuckin’ midgets.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
First off, keep in mind that I golf less than 10 times a year.
Anytime I involve the hips/wrist, I get a terrible slice (I’m righthanded, and it goes heavy heavy right). I take that out of it so I can at least make it through the round. My goal this year is to hit the range enough to incorporate a little bit of power into my game. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
The first game of the season on network tv on a Thursday night would be a ratings bonanza no matter what.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
Because the game in 2008 the last time the North played the South was at Lambeau…you can map out 14 games of an NFL schedule until the end of time unless they change how they do it
February 7th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
The last game will be a divisional game. There’s even talk that you’ll play every team in your division in December this year. If that happens, GB/Chi, whereever it’s played, will be a desirable primetime matchup in December.

he can’t be charged with anything, like big ben, but that doesn’t mean he’s not sleazy.
gotta wonder why a 24 year old guy is hooking up with a 17 year old when he could get any woman in his age group.
if he wasn’t in the NFL he might find chris hanson waiting for him in the kitchen.

God, I hope there is NFL football this fall.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
Aaron Rodgers on Cowherd right now.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
For this reason along with the team possibly being exciting to watch they could throw a curveball and make it the Lions
February 7th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
You think you’re involving your hips, but you’re probably moving your shoulders more than anything which changes the swing plane and causes the severe outside/in path that produces the slice.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
this this this this this.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
Which, to be honest, would be kind of awesome. But I really think they take a non-divisional team. I’d prefer them to have the Lions or the Bears, though.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
Hopefully flogging Cowherd with his championship belt..or his dong
/Dongslinger Favre would

@st bear – get a lesson. if nothing else, it’ll give you a few drills to incorporate at the range so you’ll be sure you’re not waisting your time when hitting balls.
just like anything else, bad practice will often do more damage than good.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
They also play the Raiders. I guess you couldn’t count that one out because of the Bay Area market. One of the Bay Area teams often plays in primetime week 1 because it’s a pain in the ass to make a schedule that doesn’t have them both playing the late game in any given week.

I’m grateful there’s an indoor driving range 10 min away from my place.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
Boycott ended, Rodgers must not listen to the show…this backpedaling is impressive “I’m not anti-Aaron Rodgers”, lies make the baby Jesus cry sir
February 7th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
What did you do to your shoulder? I have problems with my left (lead) shoulder. Old baseball injury. Every now and then it pops out of socket and hurts for 3 days.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
Aaron Rodgers on Cowherd right now.
I presume to discuss Matt Ryan
February 7th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
yea.
hogan has a great illustration in his book about this. when you’re at the top of your swing, imgaine someone’s reaching around from behind you, grabbing your belt buckle and shifting it til it’s pointing at the target.

The LATE night MNF game.

no offense. it just pissed me off how easy and compact their swings can be.

lol…this.

I took a lesson when I first started, but it focused on the short game and worked back. We never picked up a driver or wood. Consequently, I have a relatively good short game.
What are people’s opinions of the practice wiffle balls? Do they give a true assessment, or are they just fun to hit around the yard?
February 7th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
True.
I’d love to see them schedule the Lions. Would be nice to play Stafford for the first time in two years.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
never used wiffle golf balls…sorry brah.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
I had severe tendinitis on the FRONT of both my shoulders. So I was doused on anti-inflammatories and absurd amounts of high rep low-weight rehab crap for 8 weeks. I was down to the point I couldnt pick up my kids. Partly work-place ergo crap and some was the result of my always having bad shoulders (worked on a painting crew while I pitched baseball in high school). But I gutted it out and avoided surgery but there are some loose crap in there but no tears.
I’ve had some of the minor dislocations with golf its usually fine. It was just the loss of strength over time. I’m glad I got a workplace ergo re-assessment. I’m 35 and would like the use of my shoulders when I am old.

Its like short little dudes benching big weight, they only have to move the bar like 6 inches. Fucking midgets.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
I broke all of mine. They’re good for a wedge, maybe. I think the foam ones would hold up better.

not a huge fan but, like mats, they’re your only option sometimes.
i struggle getting good practice off anything but real turf. the mats allow you to get away with too many mistakes in your swing. also, not everyone tees their ball up the exactly like those little rubber tees.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
Use the little foam ones now. The plastic ones suck for chipping which is 90% of what’d you do in the backyard.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
I’d like it because there is a perfect storm for them to take a leap next year. Be a perfect moment to showcase them.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
Aaron Rodgers on Cowherd right now.
I want a full transcription.
February 7th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
fuck those rubber tees. all the ones at the ranges around me are either 0.2″ or five fucking feet tall.

some of those mats will eff your clubs up as well.

Agreed with all of this, yet I’ll still go to the range tomorrow.

Who’s the old guy with the bad-ass scratchy voice doing the V/O in the Chrysler commercial?
