Nike’s “Cooperstown Heritage” Shirts Are Amazing
All, Baseball, Goooooood Morning Sports Hernia February 3rd. 2011, 9:50am

The creative team at Nike responsible for this wonderfully hairy line of MLB “Cooperstown Heritage” shirts has struck absolute gold. Pictured here in their most unkempt glory, and this should obviously go without saying, are Randy Johnson, Michael Jack Schmidt, and the maestro of mustaches, Rollie Fingers. Right now the collection consists of just 13 shirts, but that’s sure to expand, as I imagine these will be quite popular. [via @AnswerDave, Nike]

3 Yankees, a Met and two franchises with zero HOF’ers. Screw you clean-shaven franchises. Some of them look very similar.

Will there be Red Sox Pumpsie Green shirt that looks like Al Jolson?
February 3rd, 2011 at 9:53 AM
I’m going to wait for the Dave Parker “Cobra” shorts.

Is Johnson still associated mostly with Seattle? I kind of think of him more of an Arizona guy now
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:01 AM
Awesome.

Until nike does the Bert “I Love To Fart” shirt, call me unimpressed.

Burns – “Mattingly, I said trim those sideburns, not shave them! You’re off the team!”
Mattingly – “Still like him better than Steinbrenner.”
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:02 AM
No seriously, I’m buying the Reggie one right now. 20 bucks? That’s it. Fuck it, I’m buying all of them. I’m going to make sure this shit blows up in the hood.

Shameless Self Promotion
I wrote a 6 Nations rugby preview that is currently being posted over at http://www.theiinteamblog.wordpress.com. Sorry I can’t provide a direct link, but the site is blocked at my work. For that reason, I can’t comment over there either. But I hope you click over and read it. Jeeves is a commenter here, and although it’s very Chicago-centric, his site is very well written and in depth.

The Twins one goes with Johann’s goatee? Thanks for twisting that knife some.
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:05 AM
Yeah, I don’t get that one, could’ve easily gone with someone else.
And strictly for $$$ purposes I would think they would have at least one hairy guy from Boston.

WTF! Yeah I didn’t even see that one.

Needs more Eddie Murray with the afro and pork-chop sideburns.
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:06 AM
I think of him more as an Astro.
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:06 AM
Wouldn’t be surprised if Damon wouldn’t agree to them using his likeness.

Les Expos

February 3rd, 2011 at 10:08 AM
Dunno who the White Sox one is of…should have gone with Ron Karkovice and his flesh colored mustache

Good write up St. Bear.
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:09 AM
I guess sideburns and a hat wouldn’t work too well.
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:09 AM
YOUK!!!!
As for these shirts, thanks for the link, El Hernia, wouldn’t have seen it otherwise. I’m seriously contemplating getting the Tigers version.

February 3rd, 2011 at 10:10 AM
I assumed it was Harold Baines.
Thanks. It’s the first bloggy writeup I’ve ever done, so I’m prepared for the worst.
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:11 AM
Oh yeah, probably…still needs more beard though
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:12 AM
That’s perfect and would fly off the shelves like wild geese. Get on it, Nike.
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:13 AM
I found that card in a box a few weeks ago at home. Thought I was going to be rich. It is only worth 20 bucks.

Are comments allowed where you posted it? If so I’m going to help the thread dissolve into ignorance and attempt wit in bad taste in hopes of getting discovered.

Good write up St. Bear.
I don’t know how you don’t take a second to at least mention that Johnny Wilkinson is still going strong for England.

Rod Beck, please.
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:19 AM
Very cool.
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:21 AM
Now that is a great suggestion. +1

Casual fan, I focus my limited attention on the Scots. Hoping they put in a decent performance.
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:25 AM
Pitchers and catchers. 5 days, guys.
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:27 AM
I felt I had enough on England without mentioning individual players. I did see one preview though that listed Wilkinson as a sub, which I thought was interesting.
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:28 AM

even a casual fan should know who Johnny Wilkinson is. He’s the guy that absolutely always has 3 points in his back pocket. Sort of like if Adam Vinatieri got meshed with Clay Matthews Sr, but played rugby. At this point he’s ageless, and has zero left to prove. He’s playing because he loves playing.
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:30 AM
The Big Unit, ordered. Fabulous.
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:31 AM
So he is like the rugby version of Brett Favre?
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:31 AM
I did see one preview though that listed Wilkinson as a sub, which I thought was interesting.
he’s really too old to play anymore, and he’s been hurt a lot (which kills my Clay Matthews analogy) but he’s basically instant offense, and a deadly in game field drop kicker, so if a game is close, he’ll come in to win it.
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:32 AM
So he is like the rugby version of Brett Favre?
I don’t think he has a press conference for every time his toe hurts, but fine.
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:39 AM
Instant offense in penalty kicks. His age limits his effectiveness in the open field. Absolutely agree with you about him being a late game sub though. The best will be watching the defense react after he does come in. You know they’re going to have to take their foot off the pedal a bit because they’re afraid of him.
February 3rd, 2011 at 11:14 AM
No one else thinks it’s a travesty to have Rollie as a Brewer?
February 3rd, 2011 at 11:14 AM
Just a warning… the Bagwell shirt comes two sizes too big.
February 3rd, 2011 at 11:27 AM
No one else thinks it’s a travesty to have Rollie as a Brewer?
Should have went with Gordon Thomas or Cecil Cooper
February 3rd, 2011 at 12:11 PM
Pretty sure that’s Kirby Puckett.
February 3rd, 2011 at 12:28 PM
Yeah the Twins one has got to be Puckett. That makes way more sense.
The White Sox one doesn’t really look like Harold Baines (not nearly beard-y enough), but I can’t for the life of me think of who else it would be.
February 3rd, 2011 at 1:03 PM
Yea I dont know if I want to rock shirts with dudes with Mustaches on em. Just seems sort of gay.
February 3rd, 2011 at 2:40 PM
So is it Mattingly? If so, is the other one Munson, Tidrow????
February 3rd, 2011 at 6:15 PM
Yeah these shirts are badass, really badass. So badass that when we made them during the Rangers playoff run we sold over 2,000 of the Ron Washington shirts in a week using this exact same concept. We started getting so much pub that not only the Rangers but MLB sent us ungrounded Cease and Desist letters to stop making them claiming we were infringing on the likeness of Ron Washington and he was filing suit. Even tho I had a shirt delivered to him and he liked it so much that he asked for more. However, since we obviously didn’t have the means to fight them in court we just relented took our profits and went about our lives. Also, during game one of the world series one of the guys who bought our shirt was in the front row in San Francisco and was shown multiple times on the MLB network. Now someone at Nike saw our shirt somewhere and obviously saw the potential in it and decided to expand this to the most famous players with recognizable hair and facial hair. Kinda sucks for us but really nothing we can do about it since its none of them are the exact images we used but just the concept. I guess its a compliment of sorts.
