Signing Day: Does Bringing in a Top Five Class or Five-Star Recruits Really Matter?
Signing Day. Top teams will be scrambling to assemble the top class and the most five-star prospects. But, does it really matter? I looked at Rivals’ data from 2002 to 2007, the classes that have completed a four-year cycle. I ran the data for the top five classes and every five-star recruit after the jump. Bringing in the top talent is helpful, but it does not guarantee success.
Here are the records for the top five classes each year, as well as the five-star recruits who became elite college players.

Coaching is More Important. One class does not carry a program. Bringing in a top-class every year helps. Talent and depth aren’t bad things, but Florida State had top-three classes in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Not one of them won ten games. USC brought in similar-rated talent those three years. Only one of USC’s classes won less than ten games in a season. Pete Carroll was a better coach than late-era Bobby Bowden. FSU may be on its way back, but it’s not because they have the top 2011 class. It will be because Jimbo Fisher has his hand on the tiller.
Five Star Recruits Aren’t Necessarily Awesome. Looking at the data since 2003, because Rivals appears to have stiffened their standards for a five-star recruit, 34/135 (about 25 percent) of them lived up to the hype and became elite college players. They aren’t finished products. They are 18-year-old kids who fit the mold. I was an idiot at 18. I was an idiot at 22. These players still need to develop.
Your school could get Vince Young or Tim Tebow. It could also get Xavier Lee or Kyle Wright. Ohio State had two five-stars in the 2002 class, including Maurice Clarett, but two of the best players were A.J. Hawk and Santonio Holmes who were three-stars. Troy Smith and Nick Mangold were four-stars.
How to Assess This? Get excited about the potential. Don’t start penciling in BCS Titles. Tom Luginbill can tell you how good players are now, but projecting them is far more tricky.

right here. Arkansas class from 2008, which was Petrino’s first year here was rated somewhere in the mid-30′s and they won 10 games this past year. I think way to many people put too much stock in recruiting classes and not enough in coaching.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:08 AM
agree on coaching.
Great recruiting by ND this decade … Weis couldn’t get it done.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:09 AM
Agreed, Barry Alvarez never brought in top classes and did pretty good for himself
I like how Tim Tebow was a 5-star recruit yet in that stupid commercial of his he says “No on thought I could win a national championship”…pretty sure if you’re a 5-star QB going to a power program that pretty much is the expectation
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:09 AM
Coaching is More Important.
Coaching and finding recruits that fit your system.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:10 AM
Does anybody even argue that recruiting numbers are all it takes to win big?
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:10 AM
Godzilla Biscuits (for irishmafia).
And I’ve spent 10 minutes searching for the original godzilla biscuits post with all the pics and I cant find it. RIP Archives.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:11 AM
Sure, but it’s not like he wouldn’t have done better with a few top 5 classes.
/watched Bill Callahan suck with top-5 classes.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:12 AM
It’s like the NFL Draft. If you analyze Signing Day for a living and minimize its importance you’re undermining the reason for your employment.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:14 AM
Yes. The good Dr. Saturday has addressed this many times.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:15 AM
Coaching is the great equalizer, but you have to have the studs to win a title.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:16 AM
Fuck USC
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:17 AM
With LSU, a lot of 5-stars have underachieved (Russell Shepard, anyone?), but everyone else has overachieved. Jacob Hester and Stevan Ridley were both 1,000 yard rushers, and they were both 3-stars out of high school. I believe their center is a walk-on.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:18 AM
Auburn’s class rankings
Senior: 7
Junior: 20
Sophomore: 19
Freshman: 4
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:18 AM
Metabolism fail day for me. I’m hungry for lunch, yet I’ve already had my typical breakfast and a mid-morning protein bar.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:19 AM
I’m not sure I blame him. He needs someone to get him the ball. He should be a stud slot WR.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:20 AM
I was referring to Cam Newton and Nick Fairley. They don’t win 8 games without those two players.
/As I said, you have to have the studs
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:20 AM
No one with any sense, but it’s signing day so a little perspective is appreciated with ESPN’s hysteria.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:22 AM
i THINK the bigger point is not to get gassed up about FSU’s sick class (or whatever team you follow).
which is why i like ND a lot next year. bringing back a ton PLUS a few good recruits
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:22 AM
Maybe, but there are others. Terrance Toliver was on the AJ Green/Julio Jones level coming out of high school, and he’s now a Sunday draft pick. I think Craig Loston was a 5-star too, and they redshirted him, and he’s now backing up a true freshman 4-star (Eric Reid).
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:24 AM
I need to be educated on this whole ‘signing day’ concept. Do players have to sign an LOI by today to be eligible for next season? Or is this just the first day that players are permitted to sign on? I know I could look this up but I’m lazy.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:24 AM
Signing day is great for fans of teams with good classes to puff their chests out during the offseason. We will see in 2 years who’s who and what’s what
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:25 AM
This is the first day they can fax in their LOI, they can delay the process if they want. See Pryor, Terrell
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:25 AM
Terrelle Pryor and Brice Brown didn’t sign on NSD, and neither will Jadeveon Clowney. So anyway, the short answer is no.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:26 AM
FSU had the 7th ranked class in 09 and the 10th ranked class in ’10 and will have a top-5 class in ’11. You should be more excited about them than a ND team that was 8-5 last year and had the 21st and 14th ranked classes in the same time frame.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:26 AM
Why is Tim Tebow here?
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:26 AM
With that said I was freaking geeked when Pryor put on the Ohio state cap
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:26 AM
Godzilla Biscuits. That’s not obvious?
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:27 AM
Irish just stole this kid from USC
http://www.ocvarsity.com/articles/niklas-25085-thomas-servite.html
6-6, 245. another DL/LB hybrid. that’s like 4 or 5 DE/LB guys the Irish have. like how he’s made the D a priority
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:27 AM
They need to send a letter of intent to have a scholarship. This is the earliest a University can receive it for students enrolling in the fall.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:27 AM
Thanks.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:28 AM
Some of the people FSU brought in under Bowden were head cases.
See: Lee, Xavier and Carr, Greg
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:28 AM
Get excited about the potential. Don’t start penciling in BCS Titles.
You want calm, reasoned patience from college football fans?

February 2nd, 2011 at 10:29 AM
Awesome.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:29 AM
Yes, I know they weren’t in those classes at FSU
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:29 AM
weird. Rivals says this Niklas guy may play OL.

February 2nd, 2011 at 10:29 AM
Yeah, I was pretty gassed up about AU’s class last year. But it was more because of Dyer and Trovon Reed (who got hurt) and less because of Cam.
Nobody knew much about Cam except that people would make fun of him for what happened at Florida. He didn’t beat out Barrett Trotter in the spring and it wasn’t until after two-a-days that he was named the starter for the first game.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:30 AM
Do you mean this kid, the offensive lineman?
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:30 AM
Link?
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:31 AM
And everybody sends their fax in because they’re sick of the process…except for those guys who either love the limelight or are complete head cases and can’t make up their mind.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:32 AM
He was a big time recruit originally for the Gators and was supposed to be the heir apparent to Saint Tebow. Steals a laptop and gets the boot and all of a sudden everyone forgot about Cam.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:33 AM

Not trying to be a jerk, but you do know that most that talent never even made it 3 years right? Injuries, arreststs and subsequent expulsion, paired with a severe academic cheating scandal ruined those classes.
Top recruits (4 star +) like Matt Hardrick, Brandon Warren, Damon McDaniel, Marcus Ball, Daron Rose, Anthony Leon…dude I can go on with that class…NEVER had an impact at FSU,and ended up at other schools and that’s JUST From the 2006 class.
My point is…that analysis is semi-flawed.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:33 AM
Or, seriously just love having coaches verbally seduce them.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:35 AM
For like, 3 days. But I can still chicken noodle soup with the best of them.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:35 AM
Niklas himself says USC and ND recruited him as a Defensive End.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:35 AM

how does the guy guy from not winning the spring job to HEISMAN and top 15 NFL draft pick?
this really is a tremendous story
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:36 AM
Sweet. Nebraska finally got some good news on signing day. This cat is going to sign.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:37 AM
Miz: I feel your pain. It’s really not that hard to put something in Excel and put in a web page. Trying to sort through all those numbers is miserable on my eyes.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:38 AM
which is exactly the point: Stacked recruiting classes never ensure success. so take the rankings with a grain of salt …
EXCEPT FOR NOTRE DAME, WHICH IS KILLIN’ IT
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:38 AM
The Marcus Roberson saga was weird. He signed with Florida. Originally committed to Auburn, then changed to Texas Tech, then dropped his commitment to Tech, then committed to Auburn, then Auburn said sorry dude we’ve already filled our class up and we won’t have room for you, so Roberson signed with Florida.
/ oversigning.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:39 AM
Xavier Lee was a 5 star because his athletic ability. Dumbass wanted to play QB instead of receiver…
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:39 AM
no mystery to failed five and four star recruits to make it big in cfb. the step up from preps is huge. to try to compare HS recruting stars to their a pro careers is another level of silliness
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:39 AM
All this righchea… if they can’t be good for 3 out of the next 4 or 5 years… they should just give up playing fucking football.
/Or move to the Big 10
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:39 AM
Obviously you’re joking, yet I can’t wait to read the “Notre Dame is back!” post tomorrow.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:40 AM
I think the main reason was that in the spring, summer, practice, contact wasn’t allowed on any of our QB’s. So in the spring game a DL would touch him and they’d call the play dead. Wasn’t until our first game that people actually tried to stop Cam. Arkansas State failed miserably.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:41 AM
I still think James Wilder should be a LB, but he and FSU think he can be the i-formation power back. He reminds me of this dude at UGA. He was an “athlete” and he wanted to play RB. UGA said sure, and he was a whole bunch of average. He is now coming off of a redshirt year and will be a rs Jr and playing LB, as he should be.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:43 AM
Hopefully no one is that excited.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:43 AM
Husker, not joking. Did you see the BCS post? I may just update that and stick it at the top of the page. Kelly is recruiting defense HARD this year. FINALLY. Remember how the defense finished the season … and that they return a lot of LBs/DBs …
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:44 AM
No it’s not…in fact everything Duffy is saying points to the idea that many of these guys don’t pan out on the field. Most those FSU guys went on or are still playing great football elsewhere.
Anthony Leon started at Arkansas and will likely be a NFL draft pick. Ball is in the same boat at Memphis.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:44 AM
i wonder how kelly responds in living rooms when parents ask about death, rape

Thanks for the expert analysis, Siragusa.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:48 AM
Let’s not fall that deep into the trap, TBL. Weis was “KILLING IT” too once upon a time, and that ended up with piss all over our hands. But I do liek the effort he’s putting into making us better up front for the future. The front 7 is fucking LOADED for a couple years.
/Please win 10 games this year. Please win 10 games this year…
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:48 AM
well the players also don’t always pan out, obviously. did you see the ESPN the Mag piece on No. 1 picks over the years? I’d love to see a look at Top 100 guys the last decade and how they panned out after 3-4 yrs. Put that on the V Formation and it’s a full post on TBL.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:48 AM
They most certainly are, but outside of offensive linemen, defensive linemen are maybe the least likely positions to make an immediate impact. Stud defensive linemen rarely contribute a lot their first year or two. Go look at Florida’s defensive line recruiting from a year ago. Those guys are insane…yet none of them had a major impact.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:49 AM
Tall order, but I’ll look into it and try and get something together over the weekend.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:49 AM
He gets up on a stool, starts pointing and goes on a little rant. “Were gonna rape left, right go go go go death death death. They same this team rapes? Death!”
/Rudy’d
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:50 AM
That’s because he didn’t get any talent on the lines.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:51 AM
Yup.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:51 AM
You’re right, but this isn’t a great example. Florida has had some studs at dline for a little bit.

/i knew a ruettiger
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:53 AM
Yeah he did… please don’t make me do this again.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:53 AM
i wasn;t bashing ND and Kelly, truly wondering how you handle the question
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:54 AM
haha, he came to Arkansas and was supposed to be the savior of the defensive backfield. he sucked at safety and got moved to LB and was actually decent.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:54 AM
But they had 3 of the top 9 players in the nation, at any position, and they could barely contribute…and UF’s d-line was the worst it’s been in 5 years last year.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:57 AM
You change your name far too much.
February 2nd, 2011 at 10:58 AM
I’m not disagreeing with you. Just, the worst dline in 5 years for Florida is still pretty decent.
February 2nd, 2011 at 11:02 AM
It was decent, but nothing spectacular. If the No. 1 player in the nation couldn’t play, what makes you think undersized lineman are going to push ND over the edge next year? Again, the whole purpose of this post was showing how rankings don’t equate to wins, but that is exactly what TBL is doing. ND went 8-5 last year and they beat the worst USC team in 15 years and a terrible Miami team who was playing after their coach was fired…and now all of the sudden they’re BCS bound.
/same shit, different year
February 2nd, 2011 at 11:06 AM
See Husker: I said this. I never said that ND’s line was going to be a boon for them immediately. I even warned TBL to calm down a little bit after getting jiggy with him for a second. Context, brah. Context.
February 2nd, 2011 at 11:15 AM
I was more referring to TBL’s verbal fellatio.
February 2nd, 2011 at 11:17 AM
Ah.. gotcha. Mea culpa.
February 2nd, 2011 at 11:46 AM
Just saw the Clowney highlight video on SI.com. Wonder what version of Tecmo Bowl it’s from.
