Keith Law’s Top 100 MLB Prospect List is Yankee-Heavy
MLB Prospects: Keith Law of ESPN put out his list of Top 100 MLB prospects over the weekend and surprisingly, the Yankees are well-represented (5 in the Top 100, two in the Top 12). Law compared Yanks’ prospect Jesus Montero to Frank Thomas. The Rays have eight players in the Top 100 (three in the Top 20). The Red Sox only have three in the Top 100 (but the highest-rated player was 45). The worst franchise in baseball, Pittsburgh, has just two. The Royals have six, including two of the Top 8. Mike Trout of the Angels was No. 1.

Wow. The Pirates only have two of the top 100 even with all of their high draft choices? Shameful.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:18 PM
Isn’t he a catcher? Typically you don’t want your catchers to be compared to someone who was an annual finalist for the Iron Glove award.
Someone with Insider wanna tell me where Josh Vitters is located in there?
January 31st, 2011 at 1:19 PM
Fuck you, ESPN insider

Imagine if the Royals had actually gotten back a deal like many thought they should have. Already have the best farm system. Really hope these guys work out for them.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:21 PM
For Grienke, I mean. Oops.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:22 PM
Yeah, but they have several guys you were drafted straight from HS that will make the jump into the top 100 next year.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:22 PM
I theorize that your rate of F-bombing has gone up dramatically since January 16th.

The winter of discontent.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:23 PM
I’m 99.5% certain that it’s talking exclusively about his hitting…which is orgasmic.
I’m curious who the other in the top twelve was. Sanchez? Betances?
January 31st, 2011 at 1:23 PM
Another article I won’t pay to read.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:24 PM
I don’t think he was in the top 100.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:24 PM
ESPN Outsider > ESPN Insider
/possibly Simmons’ best idea ever
January 31st, 2011 at 1:24 PM
The Royals have six, including two of the Top 8
Well, that’s good for the Yankees.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:25 PM
Fuck you, you Mcnabb loving, Lincecum wanna be hippie!
/but no, I’ve made peace.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:25 PM
It amazes me how the tigers always spend a shit ton of money on one draft pick, but then draft like a bunch of poor bastards after that. The tigers’ farm system is horrible.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:25 PM
omeone with Insider wanna tell me where Josh Vitters is located in there?
One Cub- # 46 Trey McNutt
Vitters on just missed list.

Which, just to make clear, he should’ve. That guy is not going to make it at the next level.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:27 PM
no one should be compared to frank thomas. not only will there not be another like him in his prime–i’m assuming the comparison is offensive–it’s not fair to the kid being compared
January 31st, 2011 at 1:29 PM
It’s really sad that it’s a business model that works. Pander to the casual fan (Sportscenter, Who’s Now, First Take) and put all the real good stuff (Buster’s Baseball Blog, NFL Matchup show at 7:30 AM) behind a pay wall or make people go out of their way to see it. Best way to save/make money for their type of product.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:29 PM
Here is what Law said about Montero:
January 31st, 2011 at 1:29 PM
I did read that Law called Jose Iglesias(#45) the best defensive shortstop prosect he’s ever seen. So there’s that.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:31 PM
Instead of complaining about ESPN Insider, just go to Baseball America instead
January 31st, 2011 at 1:32 PM
thanks watsonian. that makes more sense. there are a lot of patient and disciplined hitters
January 31st, 2011 at 1:32 PM
BA is a good source, but I like Law’s analysis so much better.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:33 PM
anyone care to find Zach Britton on the list?
January 31st, 2011 at 1:33 PM
a lot of their stuff is subscriber too
January 31st, 2011 at 1:33 PM
yes, but diesel, they have a pay wall too
January 31st, 2011 at 1:33 PM
Matt Bush and Brien Taylor are still waiting for their call up.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:33 PM
Would I get banned if I just copied and pasted the entire list of his top 100 in the comments?
January 31st, 2011 at 1:34 PM
if anyone wants my log-in info for BA, i’ll share through an e-mail. i have a subscription for life because i used to be a regular contributor. it’ll get you the same access as if you were a subscriber to the mag

Royals are having a “future’s” game on April 2nd between their Triple A and Double A clubs. Will probably the best game played at Kauffman Stadium all season.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:35 PM
i prefer my news delivered by professional asshats working for a lazy conglomerate instead of a team of dedicated amateurs who’d do this shit for free too.

I figured something like that.

I assume this means you’ve cleared out the local liquor store.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:36 PM
I get the hate for ESPN, but Law is spot on with a majority of his analysis. Callis and Manuel are good, but I like Law better.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:37 PM
So, TBL…uh, whose the second Yankee in the top twelve? Sanchez?
January 31st, 2011 at 1:37 PM
thanks, watsonian.

January 31st, 2011 at 1:43 PM
Not really.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:44 PM
it’s the only magazine in recent years that actually requires you to call someone to cancel, all others subscriptions i’ve had you could cancel online.
they count on people’s lazines…which is why i still get the magazine and throw it out.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:44 PM

The best is saying “Bill Me Later” for the magazine, never paying for it, and getting it for three years without any sort of notification you owe them money.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:45 PM
Nope, on Saturday I got tix for Sox/Pirates in Pittsburgh and Sox/Rays in Fenway. So psyched!

bet me your life he finishes with <200 Ks this year.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:46 PM
keep in mind, that analysis is coming from the same dude who ran the blue jays into the ground and stood by his cardinals hatred til the end*.
*right before the cardinals won the world series
/he’s ok, but he’s extremely smug

what’s amazing watsonian is the number of folkks who say they are diehard fans of a one of the MLB teams, but know shit about the farm system. that’s not diehard
January 31st, 2011 at 1:47 PM
They have some very good ones. Any idea which ones were listed by Law? I’m already on the Brett Lawrie for Prime Minister bandwagon.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:48 PM
that doesn’t make someone a diehard.
im not a diehard indians fan by any stretch of the imagination and i know a lot about their farm team.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:48 PM
oh I bet he won’t. Still doesn’t mean he’s not good.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:48 PM
watsonian – who’s your MLB squad?
January 31st, 2011 at 1:48 PM
I don’t follow it save for rumblings picked up here and there about the top prospects…I kept tabs on Gordon Beckham for all of two months before they called him up but that was about it
January 31st, 2011 at 1:48 PM
farm teams*
January 31st, 2011 at 1:48 PM
At striking out in critical at bats and hitting solo home runs.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:48 PM
He is very smug. But he had little to do with running the Jays into the ground. He was an assistant for fuck’s sake. His smugness is part of his appeal. As a fellow hater, I figure you’d appreciate that. His chats are the only ones I’ll read at BSPN.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:49 PM
Garland – Thoughts on Burkie’s reaction to Kessel going last?
January 31st, 2011 at 1:49 PM
Haha. I love that the Jays have themselves a Canadian prospect now. They probably need to find a position he’s halfway decent at, though.
Kyle Drabek should be good. But not this year.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:49 PM
I’m a diehard Yankee fan, and I only really know about the guys they talk about on sites I visit. Anyone who doesn’t think I’m a diehard can fight me.

January 31st, 2011 at 1:50 PM
Also, who cares if he strikes out? You wanted a home run hitter, you got him.

Toronto has 6 or 7 on the list. That system has made a huge recovery the last 2 years.

you’re not allowed to talk baseball. not only do you support instant replay but you also chew berry skoal.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:52 PM
To add to this, I believe he parted ways with the Jays because he realized J.P. was an idiot. He gets points from me for that alone.
J.P. and the Mets is a match made in baseball management hell. I feel very sorry for Mets fans.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:53 PM
You’re a white sox fan, correct? Sorry, but that is the team I hate most in MLB. Being a tigers’ fan living in chicago, I must hate them. It’s a requirement.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:53 PM
a) it’s wintergreen copenhagen, asshole
b) im not talking about baseball because im a tepid indians fan and if that’s what you call baseball, you best believe i don’t wanna talk about it
January 31st, 2011 at 1:55 PM
They have some very good ones. Any idea which ones were listed by Law?
Not sure, I don’t have Insider.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:55 PM
i can’t see gravatars at work.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:55 PM
LOL. I am a big fan of the “Youre not a diehard fan if.. ” arguments.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:55 PM
I’m not overly concerned about finding a position for Lawrie. Worst case, he ends up playing a corner outfield spot with some level of confidence. He’s athletic enough that he should be able to handle that. If he ends up being passable at an infield position, all the better. The bat is what I’m excited about and the fact that he’s a cocky motherfucker who has a ton of (justified) confidence.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:55 PM
that doesn’t make someone a diehard.
ok, so you want to play semantics. what should i call someone who lives and dies with their team. or is that too vague a description? someone who is really into a team. whatever. if you are into it, you should know about the farm system, cuz um, that;s where the players come from or the fodder for trades comes from. you knowing about the farm system but being a casual indians fan? that’s just being a boob
January 31st, 2011 at 1:57 PM
Ha. Berry? You’re no tyrannosaurus, you’re no tyrannosaurus at all.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:57 PM
That stick should play in a corner position. Throw him in left with Snyder in right. That’s not a bad start to an OF. If only the tigers knew how to develop any fucking position players.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:57 PM
Forgot to address the Drabek comment. I don’t think he’s a future ace but he looks to have the stuff to be a solid third starter. I agree that he’s likely a year or two away from that. Expect him to take some lumps this year.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:57 PM
again…we’re talking about the cleveland indians here. what reason have the dolans given indians fans to have even a scintilla of a reason to have any hope and/or interest in the future of the organization?
January 31st, 2011 at 1:57 PM
a) it’s wintergreen copenhagen, asshole
i’m punching you in the stomach if we ever meet. flavored cope!!? fuck you.
January 31st, 2011 at 1:58 PM
I know nothing of his personality. Sounds fun, though. Would love the Jays to be good. Hope Arencibia and Snider take big steps forward and make things fun up there this year, along with the young pitchers.

Hey Garland, I hadn’t yet heard why the Jays decided Fred Lewis wasn’t worth the few pennies they would have had to pay him? Always liked him, good utility outfielder, no?
January 31st, 2011 at 2:06 PM
Feel free to feel bad for us Met fans but J.P. is not even in my Top Ten reasons
January 31st, 2011 at 2:06 PM
I suppose at the time they had no idea they’d be getting rid of Vernon Wells, but still.
January 31st, 2011 at 2:06 PM
ill, some teams at the top level are just AAAA teams, so if you are a fan of them you are a fan of the farm system

Lawrie comments. He may not be the most articulate but I love the mentality:
January 31st, 2011 at 2:08 PM
and if you’re a white sox fan, you’re just a disgusting, vile, evil person who roots for an AAAA team with 9 figures invested in 25 guys instead of an AAAA team owned by a bunch of cheapskates.

Lewis was a bit of a pouty bitch last year when he didn’t get to play everyday. I also don’t think they trusted him to play CF. I’m actually buying into the Rajai Davis/Corey Patterson platoon in centre this year. Their respective splits suggest it might be a good fit. I also think that Bautista is going to end up back in RF with Snider in LF.
January 31st, 2011 at 2:16 PM
Yeah, the “pouty bitch” part was what I was missing. He’s definitely out of position in CF, always had been when the Giants tried to use him there occasionally as well. Good luck with Davis, I’m not as optimistic.

1 Buster Posey or Jason Heyward is better than 6 who don’t break into the league like they did. Point is, don’t get too caught up in quantity on a one-year basis of rankings.
