Kamloops Blazers Win Our Hearts With “NHL ’94″ Celebration
Of all the sports celebrations I’ve ever seen, the Kamloops Blazers paying tribute to hall of fame video game “NHL ’94″ takes first prize by a good margin. Blazers goaltender and Super Nintendo enthusiast, Cam Lanigan explains:
“I was playing on my old console [Super Nintendo] one day and I scored a spectacular goal,” said Lanigan. “Everyone just stopped and threw their sticks over their heads and I thought it was the funniest thing ever.”
Have to agree with Lanigan here. I always found it impressive that it took less than a second for each player, clearly in the midst of pissing intensity, to instantly switch gears to such a soothing, unified celebration upon scoring a goal or winning a game. Bonus points to Lanigan for describing his goal as spectacular. He’s definitely a “replay guy.”
Here’s video of the Blazers bringing the celebration to life:
Just a phenomenal idea by Lanigan. Though truth be told, it would have been far more impressive had he scored that spectacular goal on a Sega Genesis console using a controller with an uncooperative ‘C’ button that kept popping out.

Love the video. Odd to see so many empty seats in Kamloops.
/still, fuck the Kamloops Blazers

She was smart to get out of there.

the Kamloops Blazers paying tribute to hall of fame video game “NHL ’94″
Sadly, I was too old and had already missed the video game age even then
/I’ll kill any human being on Earth in Pong, though

Eh an hour away or so, we drove by it when up there last summer.
January 27th, 2011 at 3:22 PM
The only thing missing is a guy that’s called for a penalty getting checked into to the box right after the whistle, only to get out, open the door and properly enter and sit down.
Reason 1A Genesis sucked. Those controllers blew.
January 27th, 2011 at 3:22 PM
Detroit was the sickness in that game.
January 27th, 2011 at 3:23 PM
Eh an hour away or so, we drove by it when up there last summer.
Kamloops itself used to smell like one big pulp mill (the mill closed). There’s a city about 2.5 southwest that’s much nicer.

Seconded.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm. She has cousins and stuff in Merrit which I think still has a mill. We didn’t make it there either.

Ditto.
Nice post by the new hockey correspondent.
January 27th, 2011 at 3:26 PM
Not a fan of the Genesis. SNES for this guy. I did enjoy the Sonic series and a game called Bonanza Brothers though on Sega. Friend of mine even had the Sega Channel.
I just couldn’t give up the Zelda series or Final Fantasy when I was a kid that’s why I stuck with the Nintendo products.

Team SNES.
Trey, I’m talking about Kelowna, the Okanagan is beautiful country.
January 27th, 2011 at 3:28 PM
That was the battle, my friend. A weathered, battle-tested controller was as much of a challenge as the hungover asshole sitting next to you.
January 27th, 2011 at 3:31 PM
i had no idea you were such a connoisseur.
January 27th, 2011 at 3:31 PM
At least we finally disagree on something.
January 27th, 2011 at 3:31 PM
Mortal Kombat was a much better game on the Sega. This is undeniable.

well done, hernia.
January 27th, 2011 at 3:32 PM
Pff, they couldn’t even do a proper Street Fighter 2 release without introducing a new controller. Screw Genesis. (Except for X-Men, Kid Chameleon and Sonic 2.)
January 27th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
Mortal Kombat was a much better game on the Sega. This is undeniable.
Agreed, but Street Fighter 2 is a better game and much more fun to play on SNES.
January 27th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
/high five
January 27th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
The first one yeah, but who cares about that when the 2nd one was 100 times better, on both systems?
January 27th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
Nice work s1r.
January 27th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
Yes, it actually had blood and guts and such. The SegaCD version sadly was terrible, as there was load time every time that the final boss changed form.

Is there a company in the history of civilization with more missed opportunities than Sega? SegaCD, 32X, Saturn, Dreamcast, the Shenmue games, online gaming before it was even fathomable… on and on.
January 27th, 2011 at 3:38 PM
anyone still have their sega genesis console? I do. And it’s still functioning!!!!!
January 27th, 2011 at 3:39 PM

/have an Xbox 360 and Wii, rarely touch them
January 27th, 2011 at 3:44 PM
Oh yeah. I was a computer nerd for a little while too, Spence. Starcraft, Diablo, Diablo 2 and Ultima Online. That last one was way too addictive. I had to cut myself off of it.

Sega Saturn Bomberman was and still is the SHIT! I still have it.
January 27th, 2011 at 3:45 PM

I played some Ken Griffey Jr baseball on Nintendo. I only liked it because there was random crowd noise in the background that sounded like someone was saying “What up, Miller.”
January 27th, 2011 at 3:51 PM
s1rweeze…yea, only it’s “counterstrike source” now. it’s pretty similar to the original, only it’s way smoother. my roommate still plays it every now and then, but black ops kinda killed that.

Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball = The Chronic
January 27th, 2011 at 3:51 PM
Crazy Taxi was pretty cool for the Dreamcast. They also had an NBA on NBC Showtime game that was basically NBA Jam on steroids.
I will Ultra Combo the shit out of you with Orchid. Fulgore was my secondary option.
January 27th, 2011 at 3:52 PM
My friend and I used to write down and compile stats for every game. Then thankfully Griffey Baseball came by and saved us a ton of work.

I also never finished Super Mario Bros 3 and it haunts me to this day. Without whistles, that is.
January 27th, 2011 at 3:55 PM
I beat Buster Brothers at the arcade. It took a long time, and in all the time it took, nobody else ever wanted to play, or came over to see what I was doing.
