Packers Fan Fired For Wearing Green Bay Tie to His Car Salesman Job In Chicago
John Stone is a Packers fan living in Chicago. Up until yesterday, he worked at Webb Chevrolet in south suburban Oak Lawn. When he showed up for work yesterday wearing a green and yellow Green Bay tie, his boss, Jerry Roberts, told him he could take it off or he was fired. I guess no one told Roberts that spring training is only a month away.
As the title indicates, Stone chose to stick with the tie and Roberts told Stone to stick it. While losing your job because of a harmless tie is ridiculous, its not quite as ridiculous as the origin of Stone’s Packers’ fandom. Stone grew up in Chicago and didn’t become a Packers fan until “he first saw former running back Ahman Green play.” I’ll give you a minute. That makes him a Packers fan since 2000 at the earliest.
“I liked the way he played, and I liked Brett Favre before he left, and I love Aaron Rodgers, the coaching staff — the whole organization,” he said.
While Stone likely prepares for a lawsuit, we have to wonder if he deserved to be fired. Roberts says that Stone was “salting the wounds” and basically making it harder for hurt fans to sell cars. On top of that the dealership has actual ties with the Bears. Chicago announcer Jeff Joniak and several players drive loaners from Webb. And then there’s the matter of the dealership spending $20,000 a month advertising with the Bears.
So while my knee-jerk reaction was to rant about how ridiculous it is for someone to be fired for wearing a tie, I kind of get the feeling that everyone involved is a jerk. Of course, there’s always a possibility that this is a publicity stunt. I think they tried the same thing in The Goods.

All you need to know about this is that it’s the south suburbs.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
Who sells more cars, Ditka or God?
/Bill Swerski
January 25th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
I kind of get the feeling that everyone involved is a jerk
And this is the correct answer.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
Don’t think being a fan of a different sports team is a protected class in a discrimination suit…the information about his fan origin makes me unsympathetic to his cause, anyone who wasn’t moved by the greatness that was Dorsey Levens doesn’t deserve to wear a Packer tie in the first place
January 25th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
Go with that feeling.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
When did people stop behaving like grown folk? Like adults?
If you’re a Packers fan living in Chicago, you don’t show up Monday after the Pack beat the Bears wearing any Pack gear. Definitely not at work.
If you’re the boss, you pull him aside and say “Look, we have partnership deals with the Bears and you could upset some customer. Please take that off.”
That so hard?
January 25th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
Tick question. Ditka is God.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
Tick. Trick. What’s the difference?
January 25th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
Jerry The Great
/duckworth’d?
January 25th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
Ditka would only sell cars if he had Buddy Ryan with him to close the deal
January 25th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
Don’t laugh. Packers fans from my generation remember where they were the first time Eddie Lee Ivery ran with the football. And John Brockington before that.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
This guy is now a legend in Green Bay. Im sure someone will hire him up there.
/Dont let the door hit you in the ass

How many pissed off Bears fans are going out in 8 degrees and in the snow to buy a car on a Monday?
January 25th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
dude…ahman green was AWESOME for like two years.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
Can we get a post today speculating on what ‘surprise’ commits The U is getting to play alongside Chickillo? What up Cleet
January 25th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
Ding Ding Ding. Change your tie dumbass.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
His 2003 season was something special but Jamal Lewis ran for 2K that year and he was kinda overlooked…fucking 4th and 26, still think they would have rolled over the Panthers in the next game and advanced to the Super Bowl were it not for that bullshit
January 25th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
shovel passes rule. i really like how urban added the end around as an extra little wrinkle, making it more of an option play than a shovel pass tho.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
If this were a woman, Gloria Allred would already be booked on MSNBC.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
The guy had the option to take it off. He chose not to. He’s a fucktard. End of story.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
I submit the following for all you need to know about the Webb Boys.
Exhibit A
Exhibit B
Exhibit C
The first two feature Dan MacNeil. You’ve been warned.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
I’d like to think he didn’t see Ahman Green play til he was on the Texans & then he went back to find tape of his Packer days
January 25th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
This guy is a douche bag AND a cars salesman? Will wonders never cease?!
January 25th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
Ray Drew is one of the big fish out there who visited Miami, and he is having a good time on Twitter and in interviews fucking with people. Most people think he’s been a “silent commit” to UGA, but I’ve seen many-a-silent commit sign elsewhere.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
Goddamnit. Stupid moderation. There’s 3 quality Webb Boys commercials linked in #23 if it ever gets unmoderated.

i just don’t see that coming from a fat mustachioed man with a ditka bears sweater on and aviators.
that’s how all bears fans look, regardless of gender, right?
January 25th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
/feels satisfied that bucks are done with recruiting except for maybe a couple of guys who won’t make or break the class
January 25th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
Remember, Richard Roeper told us that Bear fans aren’t taking this that hard since they have the Bulls and Blackhawks to root for now
January 25th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
I wish UGA was in that position. They still have three very big fish out there. Crowell, Drew and Jenkins. If they land all three, it could be UGA’s best class under Richt.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
Genocide. All of you.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
think you’ll get all 3?
January 25th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
tsk tsk.
/montemayor’d
January 25th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
I saw that about Kehoe. That = right with god IMO
January 25th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
UGA fans and recruiting folks tend to think so, but I don’t know. Drew and Crowell have me very scared. I think they’ll land Jenkins though. They have gone balls out to get him and they need to. Much like Bama went out and got Terrance Cody via the JUCO ranks to run their 3-4, UGA is trying to do the same. Jenkins is 6-4, 340 and Georgia desperately needs a stout nose guard.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
I’d like to think he didn’t see Ahman Green play til he was on the Texans & then he went back to find tape of his Packer days
Or saw Arian Foster play for the Texans this year, then ask himself “I wonder who was the running back for the Texans two years ago” and that’s how he found Ahman Green.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
If the Irish don’t have a great defense for the next couple eyars between the guys they have now and the beast class they have coming in… I’m going to turn to heavy drug use.

jersey…yall got tuitt back, right? and you have another highly recruited DE on board…that’s a lot of the battle right there. if you can get into the backfield with two guys, you’ll be fine more often than not in college.

Yeah we got Tuitt back. He didn’t want bad things to happen to his family. Between him, Ishaq and Lynch, and the guys on the squad now, we’ve got some serious horses to run with.

/this moderation thing is going to make me send Jason an angry email.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
Okay–the guy’s a douchebag.
1. He told Dan Patrick it was for his “grandmother,” not because of Ahman Green.
2. He said he didn’t know his dealership had a deal with the Bears. What, you don’t own a fucking television or radio where you could see and hear all the commercials?
January 25th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
It’s all about line play.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
Just an fyi. Lisk took the time to try and discredit this. Not that I agree with him, but he had some pretty good evidence.

January 25th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
Not a coincidence that the Packer defense has gotten better as BJ Raji has and the return of Cullen Jenkins for the postseason has been a godsend
January 25th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
I asked this in an earlier post, but got no response. Did anyone ever get an answer about the random moderation?
January 25th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
As a matter of fact.. here it is.

“THEY’RE ALL TWIX! IT WAS A SET UP! A SETUP I TELL YA!”
January 25th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
Stark I’m almost more concerned with what Golden is going to do with what talent remains than what he is bringing in. I also heard that the Savage kid from Rutgers is interested in transferring to Miami but Schiano might not grant him the release.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
I think we’ve seen with the likes of the Bears and Steelers that it’s easier than one would think to survive sketchy o-line play but if your d-line sucks I still think you’re swimming up shit creek
January 25th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
You mean the guy who had 10 sacks as a rookie and was getting doubled by week 2 wasn’t as good of a fit as McCoy?
/love me some Mayock, but he fucked that shit up
January 25th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
yea, i remember what you’re referring to. he made some good points, but i guess im just too stubborn to change my line of thinking right now.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
As a matter of fact.. here it is.
Funny that random moderation appears to have attacked that post as well.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
yea, but the bears and steelers’ OL’s both stepped up their play in the past two months. the steelers’ OL was beastly against the jets.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
Has SC chimed in on Suh yet? Or do I need to check the twitter archives to have a laugh?

“Things are gonna be different for me now.”
“Thats a weird thing to say.”
January 25th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
I’m going to pick my words carefully here.
The lack of explanation despite many complaints and questions from some high profile and respected commenters leads me to believe that the moderation is not as random as we believe.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
And I don’t want you to. I really don’t think there is a right or wrong answer.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:08 AM

yea…i mean, you don’t pass up NDAMUKONG SUH!!!
January 25th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
He’ll say something stupid about him being dirty, when in reality, he’d sell his family to get him on the Bears.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
If he was in some cube in an office, that’s one thing, but in a front-facing position… I have to agree with the owner of the dealership.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
I’ve already petitioned Roger. We have a conference call set up for the day after the Super Bowl. Probably get his banishment from the league taken care of on Wednesday or Thursday after the big game. Don’t want to take away any of the thunder from the Steelers winning their 3rd Super Bowl in 7 years.
However, when the manslaughter charges get pressed, I just don’t see how that story and his subsequent jailing don’t dominate the headlines. I’ll apologize to the Steeler fans when the time is right.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
Happy Robbie Burns Day!
/breaking out the haggis tonight.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
me neither.
but at the same time, i think it’s telling that the two defenses in the SB are branches off the same trunk and feature DL’s that own the LOS.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
Spence: You watch a lot more big 10 then me. I need your unbiased opinion. Clayborn, Kerrigan, and Heyward are all available at 30. You run a highly aggressive 3-4. Who you taking?
January 25th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
This should clear everything up for you.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
Well, Hernia doesn’t seem to have figured out what causes the moderation machine to turn on, so I don’t suppose any of has a chance, either.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
Pretty sure after the Peppers hit any claims of other players being dirty would be deemed hypocritical
January 25th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
Heyward for me then Kerrigan. Clayborn is a lazy piece in my opinion. He showed me a lot this year, and none of it was good.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
Good point.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
Pretty sure after the Peppers hit any claims of other players being dirty would be deemed hypocritical
Was surprised (probably shouldn’t have been, it is Chicago after all) to hear boos and see complaining to the officials after that one. When they show players tape of what hits are not acceptable that one should be one of the first shown.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
You mean when a 6’7″ human being tried to tackle a 6’4″ human being? Yeah, I mean, the physics of that one just screamed filthy. I suppose Julius should just play from his knees in the future so that he hits lower. Then again, he might get called for a Brady rule hit.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
is JJ watt available too? seriously tho, any of them. they’re all good.
love kerrigan, but think he’s a 4-3 DE that’d fit on philly or indy.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
If it ain’t Scotish, it’s CCCCCRRRRRRAAAAAAPPPPPPP
January 25th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
Kerrigan, Heyward, Clayborn.
FYI, I don’t like Clayborn. When he tries, he’s a beast and could be the top DE. But I saw Iowa several times this year and that fat bastard took plays off – literally went to the sidelines and took a knee for chunks of drives.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
Figured that’s the way it would go. Heyward was beast in the Sugar Bowl. I’m just still kind of salty on OSU defensive players because of Gholston. But it seems, right now, that he’s going to be around there somewhere. Might have to trade up a little bit.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
Cleet, we had a post about that QB yesterday. I don’t know how much of a loss it is for the Canes to not get him. They need depth for next year & he’d have to sit out the year. Also, apparently he was terrible last year. I think Golden + Kehoe + Big Sean = lots of running yds
January 25th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
In my unsolicited opinion, I would say Clayborn is clearly the best of those three. All three are a good value at #30. Heyward goes beast mode at times, but disappears too often.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
Homer
January 25th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
I think the fans to their credit did shut up somewhat after seeing the replay…I was scared Rodgers got concussed again, he definitely seemed a little off for the remainder of the game (although Quarless still should have had that one 3rd down catch over the middle)
January 25th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
and heyward’s going to one of two places…PIT or NE. he’s a great player who had a great year despite the lack of stats and, while he’s not dynamic, he’s the perfect fit for a strongside DE in those 3-4′s where he’ll do his job, coaches and teammates will gush over him and nobody will be able to explain why he’s great.
heyward’s a lot like aaron smith or ty warren in my eyes.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:17 AM
Hate the rule, not the call.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:17 AM
Clayborn will be a huge bust. Dude is a loafer and his stock took a huge hit this year. Buyer beware.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:17 AM
even the most ardent buckeye fans were saying stay away and that he was a workout warrior and that’s it. that’s all on tannenbaum and mangini.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:18 AM
I was hoping he left the mortal coil.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:18 AM
Man, alot of you guys are down on Clayborn. I’m sure he will drop to the Steelers at #32 and end up terrorizing the Browns for the next decade.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:19 AM
Agree with this. He’ll never be a sack machine, but will eat up blockers.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:20 AM
He had one big game and that was it. He’s perhaps the greatest workout warrior of all time. OF ALL TIME.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:20 AM
Totally agree. He’s the perfect fit for a 3-4 defense.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
I think the fans to their credit did shut up somewhat after seeing the replay…I was scared Rodgers got concussed again,
Would have been the third one of the year right? They would have had to consider sitting him out of the Super Bowl.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
he was responsible for 75% of the sacks jake long gave up in his career.
just let that settle in for a second…a) that gholston beat the top competition he faced and b) jake long gave up FOUR FUCKING SACKS IN FOUR YEARS.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
Bigger workout warrior than Mike Mamula exercising his way to being picked ahead of Warren Sapp?
January 25th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
The correct answer is 3rd in 6 years.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
This was my next thought as they still held the lead at the time, terrifying…I know they fitted him with a different type of helmet after the second one, must have done the trick
January 25th, 2011 at 11:23 AM
The lack of explanation despite many complaints and questions from some high profile and respected commenters leads me to believe that the moderation is not as random as we believe.
I choose to think that it is. I might give TBL some grief from time to time, but never once has he singled me out in the comment section or over email. So without any real warnings, I have to imagine that I’m toeing the line nicely.
And besides some of the things which I’ve said that are moderated having nothing to do with TBL, the website, or anything else, but are innocuous responses. I really do not think TBL is that much of a puppet master to want to fuck with commenters on here to get some jollies. He’s got better things to do.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:23 AM
spencer – it’s crazy. You’d think a guy who could do that to the best LT in CFB that season and now a top LT in the NFL would be able to abuse the average guys at Northwestern, Minnesota, etc.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
I hope the Steelers will be drafting a buttload of OL, DL and DB this year.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
He has no ties to Green Bay, WI nor to the Packers organization….but he considers himself a Packers fan because he likes Ahman Green. That is incredibly lame. He should be fired for that.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
unfortunately, it was the perfect storm for jake long, something he still struggles with in the pros….the pass rusher with speed who can get to the corner but then bull rush like freeney or john abraham. that was the only move gholston had.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:27 AM
After that hit though he was very pedestrian. I would think the 15 yard penalty is worth it to earhole him in the superbowl.

I’ve yet to get the random moderation, and I’m the polar opposite of you right now, so I think your logic is sound.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:33 AM
I have a problem using an article that was posted as a great ‘slam’ to now make fun of the author in retrospect. It was a piece of shitty journalism before, and still is now. Should have been pointed out the first time.
/unless there’s a bunch of Bears-hating satirists on the blog… not impossible
January 25th, 2011 at 11:38 AM
no, you don’t.
I don’t understand moderation. Akismet (?) is the new comments system. I didn’t employ it. FSV tech guys did because the heavy load of comments bogs down the system.
I’ll go in and randomly, 3-4 comments are stuck in there. Sometimes it is multiple links, sometimes this does the trick:
/I’m funny
//trying hard
///trying harder
Currently, i believe there are 2 people whose comments are moderated before they go through for various reasons. it might be just one, I don’t remember.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:42 AM
Fair enough. I just said what I said because it seems to happen to the same people over and over. Maybe it’s computer setting/internet connection thing.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:43 AM
boo.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
I know we’re tired of talking about Cutler, but this new data point, despite Brees’ pleas to the contrary, will not help Jay Cutler at all.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
They were talking about this on Mike and Mike this morning and Greenberg was obviously thought it was stupid but kept on saying he agreed just to kill time and get people to e-mail.

Brees had time to get used to it. If all the sudden you have a sprained knee, you can’t throw normally without some time to get cortisone in there, and practice shifting weight around, etc. It will feels like your knee could randomly fall apart. There is also a dramatically increased risk of a catastrophic ACL injury with any anterolateral trauma or hyperextension of a fixed knee joint, as would happen every time he threw the frickin ball.

Oh, I caught that part. And I get the nature of the injury. Even Brees tried to explain it.
But anecdotally, no, those qualifications, fairly or not, won’t help Cutler.

Speaking of people becoming fans for no fucking reason…
My former boss, the news director at a New Orleans TV station, is a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He’s probably in his late 50s or early 60s right now. He was not born in Pittsburgh and he never once talked about family there. Said he became of the Steelers in the 1970s. Mind you, the Saints were in town in 1967. Dude was a royal asshole. Whenever the Saints would lose on a Sunday, he’d come in on Monday saying, “Blow Saints, All the Way, Saints Blow All the Way,” mocking a goofy tune the fans had for the team (Geaux Saints Geaux).
Dude was a royal asshole.
He got fired this past year. When I heard the news, I danced.

This is the most pathetic thing you’ll read all week. They should be hog-tied and thrown into a raging river.
