Who Will Be the Editor-in-Chief of ESPN the Magazine When it Moves to Bristol?
Back in July, it was revealed that ESPN the Magazine was moving its offices from New York City to Bristol, Connecticut. How many members of the editorial staff would leave the magazine and avoid having to relocate? That’s still a major question. The biggest one, though, is who the next Editor-in-Chief will be.
I’m hearing many top editors aren’t making the move, and word out of Bristol is that nobody expects current Editor-in-Chief Gary Belsky to remain in that capacity. His heir apparent was supposed to be Executive Editor Neil Fine, but a source says he’s decided not to go to Bristol.
The guy rumored to be the next Editor-in-Chief? Chad Millman, who writes about gambling for the .com. He’s a Senior Deputy Editor for the Magazine. I emailed Millman for reaction, but he said he can’t comment on rumors and referred me to ESPN PR.
The other thing to watch at ESPN the Magazine is whether or not it picks up some of the soon-to-be departed editors (and possibly writers) from Fanhouse.

Can they finally make it magazine size and not stupid square-shaped piece of crap it’s been since it started?

Is there a thread with comments on Bill Simmons’ dumbass comments about rivalries and saying Bears-Packers isn’t one? I’m surprised he even let in some of the comments like this one:
“Geez you are dumb. You can’t credit anything that’s not Boston related. Bears/Packers is a rivalry. They vie for the division every year and they hate each other. Only you would (and a few of your idiot readers) would try to downplay that.”

He didn’t say Packers-Bears wasn’t a rivalry, just that it’s overrated and I’ve been saying for years that if you ask anyone my age which team they hate the most the answer will usually be the Vikings…the two teams are rarely good at the same time so the biggest games were always played against Minnesota

But who overrates it? It’s just that the teams are close in distance so no matter what, two times per year when they play people are going to hate each other and go all out. I’m in Illinois and I see nowhere near the same type of rivalry with the Vikings as I do with the Packers. And I’m no Bears fan myself.
I suppose I could see someone else making the argument, but Simmons? What the fuck does he know about it? He said it’s a feud more than a rivalry.

I was speaking from a Packer fan’s perspective…Jay Cutler’s doucheness however is starting to get the fires burning again

He was speaking in term of national consciousness. Falcons and Saints hate each other. I don’t wish death on saints fans or players, but if they get seriously hurt but expect to make a full recovery, I’m all for it. But I doubt on national level, there’s many people that care about the rivalry. But it’s still real to me, dammit (see link)

Who cares? I wouldn’t know the Editor’s name now, let alone if they move
Rivalries are only truly rivalries when both teams are good. Otherwise, they lose their luster. tOSU/Michigan was the thing of legend 5 years ago, now I don’t even think it was nationally televised.
The Bills & Dolphins used to have a Pats/Jets type hatred of a rivalry, when Kelly & Marino were fighting each other for 10 years. Now, the Fins hate the Jets (NY/NJ transplants), but are the Jets “secondary” rival, & the Bills are just a laughingstock to everybody

Exactly.
The Redskins are very similar to the Bills in terms of this. In the 80s and early 90s, whenever they played the Giants, Eagles or Cowboys, it was a heated rivalry. Now only the Cowboys count and that’s because they have been just as crappy over the past fifteen years. Nobody else cares about the Skins.

Exactly. Celtics-Knicks were great back in the day, but the two teams are rarely good at the same time.

wrong. they are still rivalries. they dont become something else based on the success of the teams. ranking them is a different story.
if you want to rank the latest “rivalry” ahead of more local ones, fine. but i’m pretty sure crosstown RIVALS still count wherever they are located regardless of their W-L record.

New editors? Does that mean there is a chance it won’t suck?

I think there’s a difference between pro and college rivalries. Most of the pro rivalries mentioned in this thread that were good at one point really don’t matter now. Division rivalries always have the potential to be important again so in that sense they’re always rivalries, it’s just no one cares about them when one or both teams are bad. Likewise things like Colts-Patriots obviously won’t last forever, but is certainly a rivalry.
With college though the rivalries always matter, at least to the teams involved.
I should probably rewrite that first paragraph because I don’t think it makes much sense, but fuck it.

I guess my point is people like Butters are saying that the Packers/Bears rivalry doesn’t really matter even to him as a fan of one of the teams. But it’s hard to imagine him saying the same thing about Wisky and whoever they’re rivals with (Minnesota?) even if one of those teams is bad. But maybe I’m wrong. In my experience though OU/Texas was still a pretty big deal even when they both sucked in the 90s, not as big as it is now, but still.

disagree. My HS has played it’s rival since 1921, and it was a HUGE rivalry. The rival then won 25 of 27, and, over time, it was still a rivalry, but it lessened. Then, we have won the last 5, and it’s back to huge again, because it’s competitive.
