MSNBC Fires Keith Olbermann. Where Does He End Up? CNN? ESPN Radio? MLB Network?
MSNBC fired Keith Olbermann after eight years at the network. The move comes as a bit of a surprise. Countdown was MSNBC’s highest-rated show. Olbermann had weathered previous controversies, including a suspension for political donations he made to Democratic candidates. He had signed a four-year $30 million extension in 2008. It was probably not a coincidence his firing coincided with Comcast’s takeover of NBC being approved.
As a cable distributor, Comcast does business with News Corp. and has fired its own employees for public criticism of Bill O’Reilly. Olbermann is an avowed critic of O’Reilly and Fox News. He was also fired by Fox in 2001, allegedly at Rupert Murdoch’s behest, for reporting from an outside source that the company was selling the Los Angeles Dodgers. If you google “Keith Olbermann Suspended,” three of the first four links that pop up are Fox News, the New York Post and the Wall Street Journal.
Presumably, Olbermann will be off the air for a while with a non-compete clause. Here are three plausible places he could end up afterward.
CNN: Olbermann worked for CNN before joining ESPN. He also did freelance and fill-in work for them in between his stints at Fox and MSNBC. The bridges seem to be still intact. Working for Time Warner, would give him flexibility. He could go back into his old time slot at 8pm to give Piers Morgan a better lead-in. He could do baseball for TBS. He could also do stuff with Sports Illustrated and old pal Dan Patrick.
ESPN Radio: He “napalmed” bridges when he left Bristol in 1997, but that was 13 years ago. His past may preclude him from TV or editorial work. However, they did let him back on radio to co-host with Dan Patrick in 2005. They have hired and parted ways with Max Kellerman multiple times and fostered controversial personalities, such as Cowherd and Kornheiser. If he didn’t have to appear in Bristol, this could work.
MLB Network: Olbermann butts heads politically, but he’s a benign baseball fan. He writes romantic panegyrics to obscure players from his childhood. He already blogs for MLB.com. Some part time studio work where he could still be based out of New York could be an option.

I think MLB network is a great fit
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:13 AM
I think he should go away and count his money or just donate it to the Gov’t.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:14 AM
Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy! Hopefully he ends up doing local weather somewhere.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:16 AM
Now if we could get rid of O’Reilly, then maybe we will be getting somewhere.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:16 AM
Damn Liberal Media.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:17 AM
Ding! DIng! Ding!
Everyone high up is leaving NBC now, not just him. Like I once said, too bad all the execs did not leave a few years ago, if they did then the network would of been better run and probably of saved over 2200 people’s jobs. But typical corporate America, you dont get rid of the people who are running the company into the ground, you get rid of everyone else.
Is Kornheiser really that controversial? Besides hating Hannah Storms clothes and helping screw up MNF, I cant really think of anything he has done to get people worked up. Other than mentioning he knew Larry Brown every time his name is mentioned.

Glenn Beck. We were looking for Glenn Beck.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:18 AM
Good fucking riddance. Hope he winds up drinking Boone’s Farm under a bridge every day and ranting to passers by about the Republicans. Fuck him.
On a totally separate note, what the hell has gotten into Berbatov this season? That’s his THIRD fucking hat-trick this season!
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:19 AM
Racked my brain to come up with places, but with his politics and personal relationships he doesn’t have that many options.

I miss Football College Gameday…

Well, that really depends. You can’t enforce a non-compete clause in a contract if you are terminating said contract. Now, if he signed a separation agreement, and they are paying him for a while, there might be some non-compete language. But if he ceased to be paid by MSNBC as of last night, then a non-compete is wholly irrelevant.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:25 AM
I’m curious if CNN would sully it’s branding — it likes to think it’s non-ideological — to spike the ratings. It’s been dismal over there for quite a while.
As for this:
Is it possible they got rid of him because behind the scenes, as well as in front, he’s an asshole?
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:25 AM
Satellite radio.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:26 AM
If anyone’s looking to dive into college basketball this year, today’s a great day to do it. OSU/Illinois, Nova/Cuse, Tenn/UConn, Texas/Kansas, with MSU/Purdue tonight. And for the morbidly curious, you can inspect Kansas State’s corpse against A&M as well. Man was I wrong about that one.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:27 AM
Reports suggest he took a buyout. He was owed like $14 million on his contract. The non-compete clause would be a condition of the buyout.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:28 AM
Glenn Beck. We were looking for Glenn Beck.
Yeah, him too.
Satellite radio.
Beside Howard Stern, does that pay much? I have no clue. It just seems like the times I have listened to satellite radio, it is basically a bunch of amateurs with a microphone.

Sunderland looking good to get 3 pts, and tie Spurs for 5th! Their next 3 are against Chelsea, Stoke, and Spurs…those 3 will pretty much determine whether a 4th place finish is possible.

Well, even Fetch doesn’t believe that KU is better than KSU.
/I’m running that one into the ground.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:29 AM
Yes, but I was not referring to Olberman, I was referring to the Jeff Zuckers of the world who was rewarded with a new contract and a promotion when the network was bleeding money worse than any other point in history. I was one of the people purged during his regime, so I kind of take it personal.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:29 AM
If true, definitely. But I’ve seen conflicting reports this morn about whether or not he did indeed take a buyout.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:30 AM
I still laugh every time I think about that.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:32 AM
He had an acrimonious relationship that got his first ESPN radio show cancelled. Has a similar track record of rankling people he works with.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:34 AM
Chris Russo signed a 5 year, 3 million dollar deal with Satellite and he’s was just a local guy prior. I would imagine that based on those numbers Olberman would command quite a bit more.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:35 AM
3 American goals this morn; a double for Dempsey, and Spector scored as well.
And, good gawd, Man U is crapping on Birmingham.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:37 AM
Really? Never heard that before. I always heard that his show was cancelled because of low ratings. He does have a very thin skin though.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:38 AM
Don’t know if that’s Zucker or not, but the first person axed should be the guy who axed Law & Order but greenlighted the shitty Los Angeles spinoff.
And don’t even get me started on The Cape. Yeah, like that was going to succeed.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:41 AM
Very sorry. And you’re absolutely right about the Zuckers. Was a joke.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:43 AM
NBC is now going to do a Wonder Woman series, but they are changing her from a superpowered Amazon princess, to a corporate lawyer vigilante. Smells like a hit to me.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:45 AM
this guy isnt relevant. who cares where he lands

Interesting.

It blows my mind that people compare Olbermann and O’Reilly. They aren’t in the same hemisphere, in any way.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:52 AM
Love him or hate him, Olbermann was the Golden God of the “real” Liberal Media. With him gone, Rachel Maddow now carries the flag. With Olbermann, the Liberal Media was the Cubs. Now they’re the Pirates.

They are both ignorant blowhards catering to idiots. I don’t care that they are opposite ends of the political spectrum.

The Johnny Nabokov countdown is on. T-minus 4 minutes.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:57 AM
I wasn’t referring to their politics, I was referring (mostly) to their relevance.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:58 AM
Olbermann to ND?
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:59 AM
I need to get me one of those.
January 22nd, 2011 at 12:00 PM

Oh, yeah. Good point.
January 22nd, 2011 at 12:01 PM
Olbermann made O’Reilly more relevant. Olbermann was the polarizing figure that united everyone in O’Reilly’s camp. Olbermann was their wrestling villain.
January 22nd, 2011 at 12:08 PM
Saying Olbermann made O’Reilly more relevant is like saying the Casper Star-Tribune makes the NY Times more relevant.
January 22nd, 2011 at 12:13 PM
I’ve been discussing this with a lot of people I know on other sites and blogs, and lots of conservatives I know and don’t know are coming out of the woodwork and claiming “victory” on this one. They may not watch him, but they are very aware of him and hate his guts.
Olbermann is more like the Cowboys or Notre Dame. They haven’t been relevant for years, but everybody has an opinion, especially the haters.
January 22nd, 2011 at 12:31 PM
I don’t ever watch MSNBC or Olbermann, so this doesn’t really matter to me. What concerns me, however, is that a few very large and powerful companies control the flow of information to this country. Another media merger like this one is not in the best interest of democracy.
January 22nd, 2011 at 12:55 PM
Maybe they’ll fire him too.
January 22nd, 2011 at 1:40 PM
Sources close to the situation at the time told me TK gave up his radio show voluntarily.
In a way, it’s his fault we got stuck with Cowherd. If he hadn’t given up the radio show, Cowherd might still be in some mid-major radio station.
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:11 PM
Olbermann and O’Reilly aren’t on the opposite ends of anything. They’re not liberals nor conservatives. They are eye-candy for stupid people who can’t think for themselves. And they’re thrown out there by corporations looking to make money off of the “identity vanities” of the ignorant. You get what you deserve.
January 22nd, 2011 at 3:19 PM
exactly, thank you dude. So many people say, “yeah, it scares me” and then go back to calling each other stupid names like liberal and republican. WAKE THE FUCK UP ALREADY
January 22nd, 2011 at 3:31 PM
Olbermann is an incredibly talented guy who happens to have the thinnest skin and biggest case of paranoia on human record. He has flamed out and burned bridges at every place he’s worked, including ESPN, where it was famously said he would never be allowed in the building again.
The only thing you can count on is his minimalizing any other talent in the business (“they offered the job to me first, before giving it to him”, “they used to substitute host for me”), and referencing his dead parents for maudlin sympathy (he brought Dear old Dad up twice last night)
That MLB thing is interesting, in that it truly is his first love. Other than that, he’ll just enjoy his martyrdom at the altar of the Liberal sector of the Democratic Party
January 22nd, 2011 at 3:47 PM
olbermann’s mother was once hit by an errant throw from Chuck Knoblauch at Yankee Stadium.
January 22nd, 2011 at 10:54 PM
Keith is the best in Television, he tells the truth and other’s just can’t play the game as well as he does I will NEVER watch MSNBC again this man was the heart of TRUE reality. Too bad there ratings will go to hell.I wish Keith the best , Does he have enough money
to buy the stock in FOX network and get rid of Billy Goat and Shawine and Glen Pecker not can’t forget about the owner Dumb Doc ,mer
January 23rd, 2011 at 2:40 PM
Good riddance. What an obnoxious, lying snob Olbermann has been. He could never competed with O’Reilly anyway, since KO is an avowed hater. O’Reilly may be abrasive, but at least the guy doesn’t flat out lie to your face like KO. I keep reading that KO had the most successful show on MSNBC. That’s not saying much of the rest of their crew, since their overall tv ratings are abysmal at best. Rachel Maddow should be next!! Good work, Comcast!!
January 23rd, 2011 at 10:08 PM
Maybe Craig Kilborn can take over for him. Kilborn leaving CBS Late Late Show = MacLean Stevenson leaving M*A*S*H.

Where he belongs: Nowhere.
