Breaking Down Peter King’s 2011 All Pro Team
Peter King published his all-pro team this week, and since he is one of the fifty voters who decides the award, I thought it would be interesting to go down his selections and see where I disagree. Right off the bat, I have my first disagreement, as he selects Julius Peppers as his Defensive Player of the Year. My non-existent vote would go a different direction. Peppers would be in the discussion at defensive end, but he’s not even a clear cut choice for me at that position. My pick: Troy Polamalu.Clearly the best safety right now, a disruptive force, led safeties in interceptions [edit: Polamalu was 1 behind Ed Reed's 8 ints], gets sacks, and had arguably the biggest defensive play of the year: the sack/fumble of Flacco in the second Baltimore game.
I agree with King’s selections at MVP and Offensive Player of the Year (Brady), Coach (Belichick), GM (Pioli), and Defensive Rookie (Suh). King goes with Bradford at Offensive Rookie, and I’m sure he will win in a landslide; I’m going contrarian with Mike Williams of Tampa Bay. As for Comeback Player, I’m not sure Vick should qualify (he played last year), but then again I’m never sure what the requirements are for this award so I’ll abstain from my non-existent vote on this topic that interests me not at all.
Let’s get to the offense, and remember, the AP voters select only a first team, as I clearly have even less pull in influencing AP voters than I do at my own house:
QB- Tom Brady (agree)
RB- Arian Foster (agree)
FB- Ovie Mughelli (I think I might have gone Vonta Leach, but Mughelli is good too)
WR- Calvin Johnson and Roddy White. Roddy White is a no-brainer for me, but I disagree with Calvin Johnson. His stated reason is that Johnson had bad quarterback play. If that was the requirement, I would take Fitzgerald, as he had more yards and the Lions quarterback situation was like having Marino compared to Anderson, Hall and Skelton. My choices are between Lloyd, Wayne, Jennings and Andre Johnson. In a close call, I’ll go Jennings for how big he played down the stretch, as Lloyd had better raw numbers but more opportunities as the Broncos trailed alot, and Wayne had fewer touchdowns. Andre probably would have been the choice if he had played all season-still amazing what he did on a bad ankle.
TE- Marcedes Lewis. Major disagreement here. Lewis is only 8th in receiving yards for tight ends, and has less than Gates in six more games. I’m not going to go Gates, though. My pick is Jason Witten and his 1,000 yard season and 9 tds. Maybe he was just too boring and established for King.
OT- Jake Long and Marshall Yanda. Yanda? I suppose if you limited yourself to just right tackle, he’s in the discussion. I guess there is a philosophical difference on what to do at the tackle position, as it says tackle and doesn’t distinguish between left and right (just like wide receiver doesn’t distinguish between flankers and split ends, or defensive ends by which side they line up). I’m taking the best tackles. For me, it comes down to Jake Long, Joe Thomas, and D’Brickashaw Ferguson this year. I’ll go Thomas and Ferguson on the first team, and Long would get my second team vote.
OG- Ryan Lilja and Rich Seubert. I will say that his choices are not just based on who won last year, and I like the Lilja pick. I’ll go Josh Sitton (GB) and Carl Nicks (NO) over second teamers Harvey Dahl (ATL) and Lilja.
C- Alex Mack. No complaint there, as it should come down to Mack and Nick Mangold. My vote is Mangold.
DEFENSE
DE- Julius Peppers and Vince Wilfork. I didn’t realize Wilfork would count as a DE. Regardless, this needs more Justin Tuck. I’m fine with keeping Peppers as the second defensive end.
DT/NT- Kyle Williams and Johnathan Babineaux. Haloti Ngata over Babineaux, with Suh on my fictional second team.
OLB- Clay Matthews and Cameron Wake. I think this is a three way competition with Harrison (who King does not mention), rather than Suggs. I’m fine with his picks but I could also easily go Harrison here.
ILB/MLB- Lawrence Timmons and Ray Lewis. Not sure why King draws the distinction of ILB for Timmons and MLB for Lewis, since they both play in a 3/4. Regardless, I’m fine with this pick. Willis didn’t have as dominant a year, and Lewis is still bringing it strong.
CB- Nnamdi Asomugha and Devin McCourty. I’m fine with this, as King says Revis was just OK during the middle part of the year with the injury. If I’m picking on who I want at season’s end, though, it’s Revis Island over McCourty. Tramon Williams would be a second team pick.
FS/SS- Chris Harris and Troy Polamalu. I’m fine with the Harris pick, and it comes down to him or Quentin Mikell opposite the no-doubt pick of Polamalu. Reed didn’t play enough.

TE- Marcedes Lewis. Major disagreement here.
Are you ranking TE’s simply on pass catching ability and TD’s or overall game (blocking)? This year Lewis was, imo, one of the better all-around TE’s in the game.

I liked the one year Drew Brees won it with the Chargers when in reality it was just his first good season in the league…if anything they should also adopt the NBA’s Most Improved player (Josh Freeman this year one would think if it existed)
Tramon Williams on the second seems about right, between him and Sam Shields seems like Ted’s found his replacement cornerbacks when a couple years ago it seemed like an impending problem
January 20th, 2011 at 1:42 PM
+1
It bothers me the way people are saying that Tony Gonzalez is the “Greatest tight end of all time.” Tony Gonzalez is the greatest pass catching tight end of all time, and there isn’t even any discussion about that. But he’s not John Mackey.
Rating TEs by catches alone is like rating FBs by rushing yards and ignoring actual blocking ability, or actually being a fullback.
/Alstott’d
January 20th, 2011 at 1:43 PM
Also, I get your argument for TP… but he had exactly 1 sack all year. So he technically doesn’t get sacks.
Don;t mind me though, I’m in the Bag for E. Reed. Love Polamalu.

January 20th, 2011 at 1:44 PM
Does anyone know how PK comes to these conclusions? Does he select them based on what he’s seen or does he talk to coaches, front office guys, other reporters/broadcasters, etc. and pick the team?
When I did sportswriting out of college, I was tasked with certain HS beats and had to pick my year-end teams. I ALWAYS contacted coaches to get their perspective on players.
January 20th, 2011 at 1:45 PM
But Ed Reed didn’t take my Head & Shoulders
January 20th, 2011 at 1:45 PM
I highly disagree with your assessment of Julius Peppers. As someone who watched almost every Bears game from start to finish I can tell you Peppers is the sole reason the Bears defense improved so much from last year. His presence alone made it possible for other guys on defense to make plays.

Who is the favorite to win the Defensive Player of the Year award? Matthews?
January 20th, 2011 at 1:46 PM
Right of the bat, I have MY first disagreement.
January 20th, 2011 at 1:46 PM
That’s what I did as well. I never picked based on who I liked. I always went with what the coaches gave me over my own personal opinion.
January 20th, 2011 at 1:47 PM
I heard that U2 and House made his second team.
January 20th, 2011 at 1:47 PM
I disagree. It’s a very good game, but I think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.

a busy time, but fun. and anyone who does it on stats alone is silly. for baseball, always picked best defensive catcher if he wasn;t horrible offensively

You’re a girl.
What do you know about sports?
kidding. kidding.
January 20th, 2011 at 1:49 PM
I might be mistaken but I think TE’s are suppose to block too. You do know the Jaguars finished 3rd in rushing right? You think MJD blocked for himself? Congrats on the short sighted view. Makes me now know not to take your football opinions to seriously.
January 20th, 2011 at 1:49 PM
Uh huh. And it wasn’t like I only called the coaches to tell me about their players. I asked them about intraconference kids, and players they saw in tournaments or non-conference games.
I mean… I covered boys and girls soccer for one season. You think I made it out to every game? You think I knew what the left centerback was supposed to do in each situation? No. That’s why I summoned the people in the know.

I do, however, laugh when he says stupid things “Geez wiz, Charlie Sheen, get it together.”

January 20th, 2011 at 1:54 PM
He doesn’t really hate him. He has a fictional grudge against him from the time that Suh (legally) bitchsmacked Cutler’s face into the ground.

Nice post, Lisk. This seems as much like a list of those who return PK’s text messages.
1.) King desperately needs an editor with some juice to have him knock it with the coffee and the travelling and whatever else.
2.) I am beginning to enjoy my football analysis with more facts and such; King uses his contacts and lots of hedging to do his analysis it seems. It’s really annoying.
/Swedish fish rule
January 20th, 2011 at 1:57 PM
And there are a lot of people who hate him for saying stuff like that! He’s that nerd in high school that people kind of looked after just because he was nerdy and completely oblivious to his surroundings.
January 20th, 2011 at 1:57 PM
Are you talking about Simmons? It is very easy to hate that clown.
January 20th, 2011 at 1:57 PM
That was good. And the follow-up by one commenter here (sr1weeze?) was glorious (verbatim): “I’m sure Charlie Sheen, surrounded by passed out prostitutes and with cocaine on his nose, sat down at a computer, read that and thought, ‘You know what, Peter? You’re right.’”
January 20th, 2011 at 1:57 PM
Bullshit. That was a dirty hit. Along with the 2 others he was fined for in his FIRST YEAR OF PLAY. Dude is a dirty player. Plain and simple.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:00 PM
No way dude. Peter King would NEVER buy someone underage an alcoholic beverage.
As for everyone hating the coffee and travel notes, they always come at the very end of the column. They’re extremely easy to skip all together.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:01 PM
But if they skip them, how would they ever get a chance to complain about them?
January 20th, 2011 at 2:01 PM
The only dirty play was trying to behead Delhomme. He was fined for that. The Cutler fine and penalty were garbage as was the penalty for tackling barber by the hair.
Tell Lovie to get paying off the refs and try to beat the Lions fair and square.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:01 PM
No no no no. Bill Simmons is the worst kind of nerd. He’s that stuck up nerd that thinks he’s way funnier and smarter than everyone else and tries to point it out any chance he can get.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:01 PM
I hate him because he has this great access, but 20-30% of his column is about him/his travel/his coffee. Just tell me about the football.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:02 PM
Stop being so reasonable and start cursing.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:02 PM
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but most of yours are terrible.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:03 PM
Nice post, Jason. I think they need to revamp the All-Pro rosters & add more than 11/side. There is so much specialization now, it’s impossible at some positions (esp D-line & LB) to delineate between a straight on DT (NT), a bulky pass rushing DE, and an edge rushing OLB. Trying to get 7 guys when probably 10 totally qualify is unfair.
Same w/ WR & RB. You go to a 3 wide set, & only 1 RB gets picked. You pick two RB’s, you lose the FB & 1 WR.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:03 PM
I don’t hate Peter King, not like I despise Gregg Easterbrook, but PK comes across with a rather snooty holier than thou attitude sometimes. He gets to travel all over the country, on an expense account, and watch football for a living while writing about it on a Macbook Air. And he simply can’t imagine what life is look for the rest of the unwashed masses.
Seems like a good guy for the most part though.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:03 PM
I didn’t understand the Yanda pick either. I admit, I don’t watch every Ravens game, but in the three against the Steelers he seems to give up sacks to Woodley every single time. I always thought Whitworth from Cincy did better at RT against the Steelers at least.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:04 PM
His editor told him to put that stuff in. He writes plenty of shit about football. It isn’t hard to skip the other stuff.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:04 PM
Stop being so reasonable and start cursing.

His columns are like 6 pages long. Your complaint would be valid if he was writing one page about football and 5 pages about travel and coffee.

January 20th, 2011 at 2:06 PM
My only beef with King is that once he loves a player that’s it, don’t recall him making any mention of Brees’ impressive 12 game-interception streak…but once the narrative is set nothing will change it, Paddy Ice is real
January 20th, 2011 at 2:07 PM
whitworth’s played LT the past two years and has been ok. he’s a much better fit at guard though because he has really short arms.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:07 PM
I read PK, hes good, but that doesnt mean he isnt annoying. He loves to name drop who he’s hanging out with. He loves to say “I got a call from…” even though it often adds nothing to the column. He gets all moral authority about stupid crap. He complains about college football. And he likes baseball.

Hernia, undoubtedly a good point. I’ll say this for King, I don’t think he realizes that he comes off as snooty. He seems like a genuinely good guy who gets to do everything he wants and is happy about it. That by itself is not overly douchy or malevolent, but on the other hand, we all hated the kid in school who had rich parents who got to do whatever he wanted and was happy about it.
Unless he would invite people over to play on his new Sega Genesis.

I don’t get the Simmons hate. I understand his columns sometimes are a little gimmick-y or forced, but he makes the relevant points more often than not. I actually feel like his podcasts are superior to the columns, because he has less time to make convoluted metaphors which won’t ever hold up over time. Still, the jackass who wrote the Bears/GB crap that was on here, or anything Rick Reilly writes, are WAY worse than Simmons. So he has flaws and we wish he’d stick to sports more and pop culture less, whatever. I don’t get nearly as much of the “douchy arrogant prick” aura from Simmons as I do from PK. And Simmons isn’t completely in bed with any players/owners, so you get more honest opinion. Peter King writes from so much bias, it’s hard to sort out what’s actually happening.

You all asked how King does his picks. I’m sure he has league sources that give input. My thoughts aren’t just my own, they are from reviewing a variety of opinions, looking at a variety of stats on tackle rates and success rates and all sorts of stuff, from sites like FO and PFF and Advanced Stats and various writers, as well as our commenters here, in addition to watching the games. I certainly haven’t seen every play by every player.

But JT bought Britney Spears stock early and sold it at its peak
anyone else feel like britney, esp that young, was likely a lifeless lay?
January 20th, 2011 at 2:26 PM
Justin Timberlake has his eyes set on Derek Jeter’s crown.
I don’t think JT would be texting Olivia Munn if he knew she looked like Katy Perry not made up & that her Mom looked like Jerry Lewis in the Nutty Professor
January 20th, 2011 at 2:27 PM
That’s because the tastebuds were burned off by sour patch kids, which are terrible.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:27 PM
clooney is number one.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:28 PM
JT is atop my list of people I’d like to trade places with.
josh homme or chris isaak for me
January 20th, 2011 at 2:29 PM
JPQ: Pretty sure he was thinking more along the lines of her looking like this. (SFW).
January 20th, 2011 at 2:29 PM
I’d still tap that with no regard for human life.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:30 PM
clooney is number one.
I think he’s gay, but I could care less. I LOVE that guy. He’s so freaking cool.
Nips in that last pic look like rivets in the George Washington Bridge
January 20th, 2011 at 2:30 PM
I would have sold my family when I was 16 to be able to tell you yes or no.

Gods: Yeah, that works
I’d still tap that with no regard for human life.
Jersey: You’re like a dog in heat. You’d fuck a duck in Central Park if it wouldn’t break off from the cold
January 20th, 2011 at 2:33 PM
Ditto. Dit FUCKING to.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:34 PM
No DeMarcus Ware for DE? Didn’t he lead the league in sacks?!
January 20th, 2011 at 2:35 PM
My dick does not discriminate, this is true. But Olivia iss till pretty cute and can get a piece of the soul pole.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:35 PM

January 20th, 2011 at 2:35 PM
oh, that’s hot. and inappropriate. but more hot than inappropriate.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:36 PM
Easy to bounce back when you’ve really only played 4 full seasons even though you’ve been in the league for, like, 10 years.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:37 PM

They’re nothing controversial – more just idiotic. For example, after they were eliminated from the Big Ten tourney last year (definitively ending the season since they were sub .500), he had everyone show up at 5 am for a workout THE NEXT DAY after flying home.
He also was apparently a real dick to the kids that transferred/quit (Babb), consistently blaming them for the teams struggles last year. There were repeated stories of the coaching staff never faulting the game plan, just the kids’ execution of it.

that brunette backup dancer would get more of my attention

Please tell me Kevin Harlan says this when he’s running through some road beef.

I guy I went to HS with boned her out in LA, and his story is legit. He made the tabloids and everything. It was right after her 48 hour marriage, so she it was immediately before she fell off the hotness cliff.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:40 PM
It’s widely known in Hollywood. Sorry, bro.

a whole different world man, like ancient rome, where buggering of young boys was not frowned upon. james dean was once asked about homo experiences, and he said ‘i wouldn;t go through life with one hand tied behind my back’
January 20th, 2011 at 2:42 PM
Do you think Marcedes Pewis is a better blocker than Witten? He’s pretty good as a blocker. Is there any Sargon way possible that Lewis is 300+ yards of value over average better than Witten at blocking?
My thoughts on Lewis are not without bias.
/they better re-sign him

January 20th, 2011 at 2:45 PM
I can never tell when you’re joking or not.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:47 PM
hernia is always seriously joking, but jokingly serious. deal with it.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:48 PM
He said the sex wasn’t anything special, but the whole time he couldn’t stop thinking “Holy Shit, I am having sex with Britney Spears”.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:48 PM
Clooney probably has fucked a guy or two in his life but was done mostly out of boredom
January 20th, 2011 at 2:49 PM

i’d have been thinking of jessica simpson, the lachey years
January 20th, 2011 at 2:50 PM
Sounds about right. I’d have the biggest smile on my face the entire time. So much so that it would become creepy and she’d probably call in her security detail.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:52 PM
I can never tell when you’re joking or not.
I’m usually not wrong on my entertainment gaydar, honed from years of observation and mindless entertainment gossip reading. This might bring Mole in off the top rope about my Alicia Keys claim (and I still stand by that, at a minimum, she likes to munch carpet)
January 20th, 2011 at 2:54 PM
I’d buy that for a dollar.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:54 PM
who’s surprised by alicia keys being a lesbo? if anything, that increases her hotness…it’s not like she’s snoop from the wire or anything.
January 20th, 2011 at 2:57 PM
I like to think of Alicia Keys that way. I don’t believe it anymore but it’s a lot better than thinking of her with Swizzy
January 20th, 2011 at 2:57 PM

ohh you’d be surprised. One Sunday night the something (Grammy?) awards were on, & I said on here that she, Queen Latifah & Missy Elliott were gay. I think people on here would have waterboarded me for saying that about Keys (“SHE’S DATING SOME DUDE!” “SHE’S PREGNANT!”)
/like that makes it not true
/Travolta’d Cruise’d, etc
January 20th, 2011 at 2:59 PM
really, what does it matter what our favorite celebrities’ sexual preference is? we aint gettin in any of those panties.
January 20th, 2011 at 3:00 PM
i think women can get withh each other and not be called gay, but not guys
/you think that way too
January 20th, 2011 at 3:01 PM
we aint gettin in any of those panties.
I wouldn’t be so sure about that. Travolta’s pretty promiscuous
January 20th, 2011 at 3:02 PM
i fucking hate john travolta.
January 20th, 2011 at 3:04 PM
Related question: If Alicia Keys is gay, does that make Swizz Beats her Merkin? I’ve never heard what you call a dude that’s fronting as the mate for a lesbian (like a girl is a beard for a gay guy) but it seems like the right thing to do and the right way to do it.
