Five Prominent College Football Coaches On the Hot Seat For 2011
These coaches kept their jobs, but will be under tremendous pressure to perform next season.
Rick Neuheisel (UCLA): UCLA interviewed Al Golden, Mike Bellotti and John Harbaugh in 2008. They settled on a UCLA man. Neuheisel entered with fanfare, a bucket full of passion and a pledge to end Pete Carroll’s hegemony. He then won a whopping eight Pac 10 games, over the next three seasons. Despite having two recent NFL offensive coordinators on staff, the Bruins have not finished higher than 88th in total offense. UCLA is the premier campus in arguably the best recruiting district in the country. If Neuheisel can’t win in his fourth season, it will be time to find someone who can.
Dabo Swinney (Clemson): Handing the reigns to a wide receivers coach in 2008 was a gamble. It hasn’t paid off. Dabo Swinney rode C.J. Spiller to nine wins in 2009, but, without him, the Tigers muddled to a 6-7 finish (5-7 vs. FBS), their first losing mark since 1998. The team’s talent was never the problem. Swinney will get another chance with a revamped offensive staff, but, with former offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez single and ready to mingle, anything less than competing for an ACC title could see him ousted.
Jeff Tedford (California): This was the first losing season of Tedford’s tenure. Cal lost seven of its last 10, getting blown out by Nevada, USC, Oregon State and Stanford. The Golden Bears could not beat Washington at home in the final game, with a bowl berth at stake. Cal struggled most with offense and quarterback play, Jeff Tedford’s areas of expertise. Tedford once was the program’s savior, but last season was seriously underwhelming and two poor recruiting classes will hamper them next season. At a University undergoing enormous budget cuts, another disappointing season could leave administrators wondering why the Tedford advantage is worth a $1 million per year premium.
Houston Nutt (Mississippi): Top 20 finishes in his first two years earned the Right Reverend some trust, but Ole Miss’ 2010 season eroded just about all of it. Despite importing Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, the Rebels finished just 4-8, padded by wins over titans Tulane and Louisiana-Lafayette. They lost to FCS Jacksonville State and to Vanderbilt at home by two touchdowns. Most importantly, Nutt has effectively ceded Mississippi to Dan Mullen. His track record suggests a bounce-back season, but another stinker like this year and he could be gone.
Greg Schiano (Rutgers): Schiano was once the hottest commodity in college football. He won 11 games at Rutgers. He once turned down Miami and Michigan. That moment has passed. After five-straight winning seasons, Rutgers went 4-8 (3-8 vs. FBS), finishing dead last in a painfully mediocre Big East. The Scarlet Knight lost to Tulane at home. Highly-touted quarterback recruit Tom Savage became alienated and left the program. Schiano’s loyalty, and a contract through 2016, should let him weather another bad season. But another 1-6 showing in the Big East will start the rumblings.

Where the hell is Mark Richt?
January 19th, 2011 at 2:21 PM
“They settled on a UCLA man”
Can you please stop with this.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:22 PM
Tedford and Shiano are pretty much untouchable. I’m shocked Neuishal hasn’t been canned yet, but he will be at the end of the season. Swiney and Nutt are also dead men coaching.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:23 PM
Agree with Neuheisel and Swinney. Tedford I think gets a pass for last year. Schiano as well. Turning down big name schools with huge contracts in the national spotlight earns you a lot of loyalty. Nutt can’t afford afford to go under .500 again though.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:23 PM
This is one of the reasons why they won’t fire him. Another is b/c it’s Cal, not exactly a football powerhouse. He had one down year, but was pretty succesful before that.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:23 PM
Richt has to be there. With a new AD, the arrests and a 6-7 season he needs at least 8 wins. It’s definitely doable in the SEC East.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:23 PM
He once turned down Miami and Michigan.
Such a dumbass move. Enjoy the MAC.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:24 PM
RichRod to Clemson next december. Count on it.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:25 PM
Schiano is pretty safe. NJ doesn’t expect much out of Rutgers. It would take multiple bad years (like, 2 wins a year), for his job to be in danger. The Big East is just bad enough to prevent that.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:26 PM
This post needs more Mack Brown.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:26 PM
Does Cal not have an athletic department?
January 19th, 2011 at 2:26 PM
No mention of Brady Hoke’s hot seat?
January 19th, 2011 at 2:27 PM
that horse was beaten to death the previous year, you know when it really wasn’t true.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:28 PM
That won’t happen until October when U of M is 0-2 in the Big10.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:28 PM
Actually, St. Bear, I think 2 wins could win the Big East next year
January 19th, 2011 at 2:28 PM
They settled on a UCLA man”
Can you please stop with this.
HE’S A MAN!!DAMMIT!
January 19th, 2011 at 2:29 PM
But he’s nawt a Climpson mayaaan.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:29 PM
Cal is the school that is cutting baseball right?
January 19th, 2011 at 2:29 PM
Cal and/or Schiano being fired would not be wise. Another example of “be careful what you wish for” for a fanbase that expects more than they should from a program.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:29 PM
Ron Zook.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:30 PM
I’m not sure I but it with Houston Nutt, Greg Schiano or Jeff Tedford. I’m surprised Dabo’s lasted this long
January 19th, 2011 at 2:30 PM
fuck ole piss. this is right along the lines of old dale, win the first couple years with someone else’s players, then start a couple years of excuse making about how tough it is to recruit in the sec, blah, blah, blah. what a fucking loser coach for a loser school. they go well together.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:30 PM
Yes
January 19th, 2011 at 2:30 PM
id hire tedford to run my offense any day of the week.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:30 PM
but = buy
January 19th, 2011 at 2:31 PM
Back-to-back wins over Texas saves him, while at the same time, kills Payaso.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:31 PM
I thought you SEC fans loved every school in the conference.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:33 PM
Richt should be on top of this list.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:33 PM
It took Cal 5 seasons to fire Tom Holmoe after going 12-43 and 6-34 in the Pac-10. I think Tedford is safe barring a complete collapse.
It would be interesting to see what would happen if Texas and Georgia both struggle again.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:33 PM
And then they lost to UCF in a bowl game and legitimized it for this year, right?
January 19th, 2011 at 2:34 PM
Giant myth.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:36 PM
No way. Illinois knows what they are as a football program. Zook is perfect for that school. Bring in the occasional big recruit, maybe hit the Rose Bowl every 5-7 years. That’s ILL football.
Neuheisel is TOAST.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:36 PM
watching this NFL films special on Lou Holtz as the Jets coach on ESPN2. He’s got a good sense of humor about his failed NFL career. Pretty interesting and they’ve got some great footage
January 19th, 2011 at 2:36 PM
fuck that. not me. I will never and have never done the SEC chant. there are some schools that I don’t mind cheering for as long as they aren’t playing the Hogs, but gay ass ole piss isn’t one of them.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:37 PM
venables’ vengence knows no bounds.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:39 PM
He was never on the hot seat this year. For proof see him still being employed after a 6-7 year. TBL jumped the gun on that one. He is on a very hot seat entering 2011, though. It will take at least 8, more likely 9 wins for him to keep his job.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:40 PM
At least he didn’t leave the Jets on probation like he did all his other teams.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:40 PM
I agree 100%, it’s just funny that last year tbl/duffy (I can’t remember for sure which one) was always saying he was on the way out when he wasn’t, and now that he is on the hot seat he is no where to be found.
but didn’t they pretty much fluke their way into that BCS Bowl a couple years ago? they should be happy just getting to a bowl any year, much less a BCS bowl.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:41 PM
Dabo’s new OC is legit. I think Climpson turns things around real quick-like.
Add Dennis Erickson to the list.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:41 PM
thank god they fluked their way into that rose bowl…USC would’ve stomped that OSU team worse than LSU did.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:41 PM
I agree. I think he long ago gave up to complacency.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:43 PM
Nice job, Duffy.
For what it’s worth, the only team that finished higher than Rutgers in the Scout.com 2011 recruiting rankings is Louisville.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:43 PM
I’d say that more accurately describes what Wisconsin’s program should be if they keep at it like they are…hope to beat OSU during the season and capitalize
The Illini are a nothing entity in the Big Ten other than the random outlier
January 19th, 2011 at 2:44 PM
Oh, gotcha. Yeah, I remember that. I have to give TBL a cfb pass for at least a year since he mentioned Auburn as one of his 2010 sleeper picks. Duffy on the other hand, ehhhh.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:44 PM
Add Dennis Erickson to the list
i see Vandals sign in the big sky
January 19th, 2011 at 2:44 PM
He was never on the hot seat this year. For proof see him still being employed after a 6-7 year. TBL jumped the gun on that one. He is on a very hot seat entering 2011, though. It will take at least 8, more likely 9 wins for him to keep his job.
And then? The spectre of Venables covers the entire program.
/cue dramatic music.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:45 PM
Say what?
January 19th, 2011 at 2:45 PM
The probability of Richt getting fired is parallel with the available coaches on the market as next season draws to a close. Even with a 7 or 8 win season I bet they wouldn’t fire him unless there was a Harbaugh-hype like name out there this coming offseason.
Who are you going to get that is better right now?
January 19th, 2011 at 2:45 PM
And by parallel I of course meant related to.
/not a math major
January 19th, 2011 at 2:46 PM
For what it’s worth, the only team that finished higher than Rutgers in the Scout.com 2011 recruiting rankings is Louisville.
Say what?
exactly. fuck recruiting rankings
January 19th, 2011 at 2:46 PM
I assume he means in the Big East.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:47 PM
Actually, there is some pretty major correlation. And there better be when duffy starts paying players.
I think dork maybe should have qualified his statement as being amongst Big East teams?
January 19th, 2011 at 2:47 PM
Sugar Bowl in ’01, Rose in ’07. They get to the BCS in that 5-7 year window. Wisconsin falls in that same group with Iowa and Penn State, where Michigan used to be. Hit the BCS once every recruiting class.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:48 PM
Yes, sorry. I meant BE only (wish that was obvious).
/yes, all the stuff about recruiting rankings being horribly flawed, but felt it was worth mentioning nonetheless
January 19th, 2011 at 2:48 PM
if by rutgers and louisville you mean ohio state and texas, you’d be right.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:49 PM
Yep.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:49 PM
oops.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:50 PM
Clemson is recruiting very well, too.
That’s always the biggest question. Is there someone better than what they have now. Charlie Strong will get a look for sure, but UGA would be able to get some looks at talented coaches. It has everything you’d want for a program. Good school, great conference and a natural recruiting base that is top notch.
False. What happened was losing quality assistant coaches and having Bama get back into things. Saban is hitting the state of GA hard for recruits, and Richt never had to deal with that threat before. Now you have Bama, AUB, FLA, FSU, Clemson, SC and GT all recruiting against you. Chizik is also a helluva recruiter, so that is hurting GA. Of course if UGA closes this class with 4-5 more studs (which is possible and maybe even probable) that would certainly help.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:50 PM
In the Big Least? Yea.
Nationally, they are #27 and #38, respectively.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:50 PM
Louisville is gonna get a big haul this year. They are cleaning up in FL. TCU might not end up with the annual path to the BCS that is just assumed to be theirs
January 19th, 2011 at 2:50 PM
To be fair, when I wade into stuff where most of you guys know way more than me I should be as precise as possible.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:51 PM
stark, who knew so many kids like horse racing?
why else would kids beat a path there?
January 19th, 2011 at 2:52 PM
Overall recruiting rankings can be misleading insofar as they overvalue traditional powers and undervalue mid-majors. But conference recruiting ratings are pretty accurate because, for the most part, the quality of teams will be much closer than across the entire college football spectrum.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:52 PM
thanks ms. never saw it from a conference angle
January 19th, 2011 at 2:53 PM
Clemson, who? They must be cheating.
/ Thayer Evans
I agree, that’s part of it. Auburn appears to be wrecking shop in GA again this year. But, in the bowl game for example, I watch him and I see the perception of complacency. Not going for it on 4th and short, not trying to score before the end of the half…stuff like that pisses me off and it’s apparently business as usual with Richt.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:53 PM
Michigan thought the same thing.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:54 PM
why else would kids beat a path there?
Charlie Strong. I never thought about the horse racing angle, though. Louisville should try to entice kids with a list of celebs partying in the first week of May
January 19th, 2011 at 2:54 PM
Don’t slight the power of Hoke-a-mania. Gonna run wild on the spar-toons
January 19th, 2011 at 2:54 PM
Okay, little brother.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:55 PM
they also undervalue recruits who make their decisions early and don’t get pageviews. also, oversigning impacts these rankings big time too.
that said, i think there’s a lot of value to them and a lot of value knowing about the top recruits as they’re guys you’ll most likely be seeing shortly.
texas has FIVE 5-stars this year…just absurd. alabama wins the reruiting wars, gets an NC. same thing with florida and LSU earlier in the decade. the only NC i can think of that won on the shoulders of JUCO’s was auburn this year…recruiting is important to CFB.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:55 PM
AUB isn’t taking anyone that GA was really hard after. Bama, on the other hand, may get 3-4 players that UGA really, really wanted.
Michigan’s recruiting base is fucking terrible. It is not even in the same stratosphere as UGA’s.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:56 PM
Surprised they’re even that high. Especially Rutgers.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:57 PM
They aren’t getting back any time soon.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:57 PM
This is very true. I remember South Carolina had a top-5 class (or very close to it) with like 31 players. A team like FLA was a few spots behind them, but had a much better group of players.
Understatement of the year? You obviously have to have great coaching, but the Jimmys and the Joes are what puts a team over the edge. Prime example being the 2001 Miami team. They had a retard for a head coach, but so much talent that it didn’t matter.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:58 PM
UCLA interviewed Al Golden, Mike Bellotti and John Harbaugh in 2008. They settled on a UCLA man.
I get the annoyance at extending this joke but it’s accurate. I don’t think they chose Neuheisel over Bellotti or Harbaugh, however, because I’m pretty sure those guys turned them down
January 19th, 2011 at 2:58 PM
You mean as a state? Although the state lacks talent, Michigan recruits nationally. I think they may even have some players in the NFL.
/you’re better than that comment, Gods.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:59 PM
I agree with this, and the rest of what you said.
Where I think people get into trouble with the rankings is trying to draw too much of a distinction between say, who Scout has at #25 and who they have at #45.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:59 PM
Really? Quan Bray? CJ Uzomah? Potentially Ray Drew? Potentially Gabe Wright? Etc.
January 19th, 2011 at 2:59 PM
seriously…michigan probably recruited florida under rich rod just as well as UGA.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:00 PM
This is true. By the way, I’m still thinking Northwestern has a shot at the big10 championship game this year.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:00 PM
Gimme a break. Sparty wins three in a row during the darkest period in M history and now you own Michigan.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:01 PM
if free shoes U gets jadeveon clowney, watch the fuck out ACC. they’re close to building something dangerous under jimbo.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:01 PM
2001 Miami team. They had a retard for a head coach, but so much talent that it didn’t matter.
That talent they had was very well-coached before 2001, it should be noted. UTSA is totally gonna win whatever conference they’re in within 3 years, fwiw. Love Coker even if he is on a short list for worst coach to ever win a national title
January 19th, 2011 at 3:01 PM
Sooner than UM will. I’d bet on that. They have a quarterback, the Wolverines don’t. Illinois actually has some talented youngsters.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:02 PM
How is this pronounced? Jade-Vee-On?
January 19th, 2011 at 3:02 PM
I don’t agree, but I’m sure they will beat Iowa.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:03 PM
Care for a wager that Ill makes a BCS game before Michigan? I’m game.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:03 PM
i thought it was jah-dev-eon.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:03 PM
FSU is for real poised to take back the ACC, spence. The coach-in-waiting scheme is mostly bullshit but they definitely look like they got the right guy there. He reminds me so much of old clips of Bobby Bowden it’s scary.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:04 PM
Natural base, champ. NATURAL. That means you don’t have to convince a kid from Cali to come out to Michigan. You don’t have to go down to Texas and pray a kid wants to leave the Longhorns. Within a 300 mile radius of campus, there is shit for talent compared to UGA. It’s not even close.
Bray would have been gravy and all UGA wants is Crowell. Drew isn’t going to AUB. As for Uzomah, there is a kid by the name of Jay Rome that is a wee bit better. I’ll give you Wright though.
I think they are about to go on a tear, to be honest. They are putting together a sick class right now.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:04 PM
they also have Paul Petrino as OC, who probably won’t be there long, but can recruit and run an offense like a MF’r.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:05 PM
This is all wrong.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:05 PM
I’m deferring to you, cap. I’d never heard of the guy before.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:06 PM
Does this site analyze any sport worse than CFB?
January 19th, 2011 at 3:08 PM
yea man…and they’ve done it completely under the radar. look at their recruiting class this year…it’s fucking outrageous.
how sad is it that ive seen at least 10 youtube highlight packages of him and still don’t know how to pronounce it.
i really have no idea how he’ll do at the next level, but it’s fun as fuck watching him play against high school kids. he’s the biggest kid on the field and BY FAR the fastest. it’s totally unfair.
but the best is watching D-1 caliber OL highlights…borderline snuff films.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:10 PM
This will happen. jNWU just has our number for some reason. I don’t pretend to understand it.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:10 PM
It depends on how many hemp necklaces duffy chooses to wear on any given day.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:11 PM
Free Shoe had a top-10 class last year and will have a top-5 class this year. Muschamp had better bring his A game on the recruiting trail, or FLA could be in some trouble. Same with Al Golden. Jimbo and Co. aren’t fucking around.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:11 PM
I don’t agree with this one bit, I’d say that there are a lot of intelligent people here when it comes to CFB. Maybe with respect to the CFB coaches, but I tend to believe a lot of that stuff is tongue in cheek.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:11 PM
The natural base is less than ideal, but you can make up for it by recruiting nationally.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:13 PM
cricket, golf
January 19th, 2011 at 3:14 PM
they also undervalue recruits who make their decisions early and don’t get pageviews. also, oversigning impacts these rankings big time too.
that said, i think there’s a lot of value to them and a lot of value knowing about the top recruits as they’re guys you’ll most likely be seeing shortly.

Well said. There’s always the question for some of these recruits of: “Are they 4 star or 5 star because they are good or are they 4-5 stars because Texas, Alabama, Florida, LSU, etc recruited them?”
January 19th, 2011 at 3:14 PM
But it makes the job that much less attractive when you realize that getting talent isn’t as easy as it once was. Michigan used to put out more talent within the state’s lines than it does now. The Michigan name is certainly top-10, but I don’t think the Michigan job is top-15 right now. Of course, all it takes is one good coach to change that.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:16 PM
Michigan recruits in Ohio, which is within 300 miles of campus.
Think the Legends division is wide open. Could see any team besides Minnesota winning it. Not that it’s going to matter because that team is going to get rolled by Ohio State.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:17 PM
exactly…ND gets this the worst.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:17 PM
I think he’s referring to posts, not comments.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:17 PM
Rumors are flying that Stacey Searls may leave UGA to be the Offensive Line coach at Texas. Can’t wait to hear how he’s one of the best offensive line coaches in the country. I guess no one actually watches UGA games as they couldn’t run block to save their lives.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:17 PM
I hear ya Gods, I think we are on the same page.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:19 PM
How well are they doing there? How many top players from Ohio have gone to Michigan in the last 5 years?
January 19th, 2011 at 3:19 PM
I mean. I hear this. But then a bunch of guys that defect from ND for other schools end up being pretty fucking good.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:20 PM
If Schiano gets canned, no one can really bitch about coaches leaving for better jobs. If the school won’t show loyalty to you, why should you show any to them???
January 19th, 2011 at 3:21 PM
They’ve had a handful of Ohio top recruits that either made it to campus and immediately transferred or never even made it to campus.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:21 PM
vest’s put up quite the fence.
unfortunately, he didn’t put a roof on ohio because texas and alabama flew in and stole a couple of big time LB recruits*.
*hicks was from texas and a longhorns fan, depriest saw the logjam OSU has at LB and actually wanted to see the field
January 19th, 2011 at 3:21 PM
exactly…ND gets this the worst.
And they probably have the least cause to earn such treatment.
But this is all by of reaffirming that national recruiting rankings should be taken with a huge grain of iodized salt. SMU is ranked 47th in the country by Scouts and 42nd by Rivals. So…who cares? We will probably only be playing a small handful of the teams ranked above us. So there is no empirical way to validate this ranking.
/FWIW, SMU is tied for first in CUSA recruit rankings for 2011.
//homer’d.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:22 PM
ND does get it the worst, but it happens. As much as I hate Bill Callahan, he used to find good “diamond in the rough” players in Cali, offer them, and then USC or UCLA would offer them and the stars would go from 2 to 3 or 3 to 4. Recruiting services are in the business of getting clicks and making money.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:22 PM
Traditionally, they do well. Recent failures are more due to Rodriguez/late Carr failures than the natural state of things. That was one of the reasons they wanted someone with Midwestern roots to come back in and build up that pipeline. My guess is Hoke does that. It’s not Florida, but there’s still enough there to stock a team with a few guys plucked from around the country.

Interesting battle (recruiting and otherwise) shaping up between them and Texas St. (in San Marcos), who are both moving to FBS. Texas St. hired Franchione. Two big name (has-been?) coaches.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:24 PM
ohio’s 2012 class is LOADED and OSU doesn’t have many schollies to throw around.
/cries
January 19th, 2011 at 3:24 PM
I mean, what the fuck. Greg Olsen was on campus at ND and then decided he wanted to leave. Justin Trattou was rocking Notre Dame stuff at Don Bosco Prep, and then Weis became coach and he took his talents to Gainesville. Regie Bush was in between Stanford and Notre Dame until Pete Carroll’s boys bought him a house.
Lets chill wit this “ND recruits get inflated rankings” bullshit.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:24 PM
Not really, dude. Look at the top-10 in the recruiting rankings over the last 5 years and then look at what they did on the field. The one’s that failed to live up to the hype are generally the outliers. If you win in FEB, generally speaking you win in the Fall.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:25 PM
Ultimate homer statement. Michigan has no chance. Iowa, eh, probably not. It’s between NW, MSU, and Neb (who will be the favorite).
This part’s right though.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:25 PM
yep.
plus, it doesn’t take into account 3-star prospects who turn out to be awesome. from a homer’s perspective, three of my favorite buckeyes were afterthoughts from the recruiting services…aj hawk, troy smith and dane sanzenbacher.
/
January 19th, 2011 at 3:25 PM
Well let’s say that instead of broad generalities based on personal favor (or lack there of).
January 19th, 2011 at 3:26 PM
Hello, Nebraska!!
But they do. As do USC, FLA, etc… ND isn’t the only one, but they are one of the teams that benefits from having their name attached to a kid.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:26 PM
fair enough.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:27 PM
Not really, dude. Look at the top-10 in the recruiting rankings over the last 5 years and then look at what they did on the field. The one’s that failed to live up to the hype are generally the outliers. If you win in FEB, generally speaking you win in the Fall.
Yes really dude. For all the reasons stated earlier. Conference rankings are by far more accurate indicators.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:28 PM
Not with their schedule. I firmly believe it will take NEB a little while to get used to playing B10 teams. They are also going to have to recruit differently than they did when they were in the B10. They weren’t even planning on taking a big LB this year because in the B12, you needed LBs who could run with spread TE’s. I think they lose 4 games next year. Of course a lot of that has to do with their shitty offense, too.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:28 PM
Lets chill wit this “ND recruits get inflated rankings” bullshit.
I don’t think it’s bullshit, but I’ll respect your wishes and let it go.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:28 PM
you know OSU will still get the top 18 or so of em tho…tressel always offers ohio kids over kids from other states that are equal targets in their eyes. and HS coaches around here know this too, which has helped put that fence up.
that said, there’s still a lot of talent in the state to go around. if you need a LB or OL, start writing letters now.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:29 PM
I don’t get what this means. Not trying to be a snarky bitch at all, but if a kid is good enough to go to USC or Florida, etc. Doesn’t that mean he is pretty good. And if you have a lot of those kids, doesn’t that mean the recruiting class is pretty good? Like, I honestly don’t get it.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:30 PM
Michigan isn’t going to be as horrible as everyone thinks.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:30 PM
Of course. But that means the rankings matter, no? If you have classes that are consistently better than your conference peers, you are more likely to win your conference.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:31 PM
What is going to hurt Neb every year is there crossover game. Penn St every year. I’m not saying Penn St. is a power house any more, but they’re still solid. MSU’s crossover game . . . . Indiana. BATTLE FOR THE OLD BRASS SPITOON.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:32 PM
Of course. But that means the rankings matter, no? If you have classes that are consistently better than your conference peers, you are more likely to win your conference.
I didn’t say rankings didn’t matter. I said conference rankings are more accurate national rankings and that national rankings because of the favoritism they can exhibit, should be taken with a grain of salt.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:32 PM
They’re not going to the Big10 title game.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
I’m saying that if Purdue, Arizona, Mississippi State and Rutgers have offered a kid, his rating may be X. If ND, USC, FLA or some other kid offers them, they will X+. I personally don’t believe they’d get the “+” if it were not for that offer. The kid is the same player with or without the offer, but the recruiting service won’t always show that.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
As an impartial observer/hater of the Big 10 I’m gonna go ahead and side with Duffy and JHS on this. It’s kind of silly at this point to look at that list of teams and say “Michigan has no chance” because that’s not a murderer’s row right there. Nebraska, as Husker points out, will have to adjust a little bit. MSU is a fraud. Northwestern is entirely dependent on a fragile QB staying healthy. Iowa is, you know, Iowa. It seems sorta open to me
January 19th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
here’s what happens…and it’s not the top guys were talking about.
say a fringe 3/4 star commits to ND. recruiting services see this and bump him up to a 4 (instead of the 3 he’d be if he went to somewhere like WVU or oklahoma state).
January 19th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
I’m going to need some examples. I know you have them.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
That hurts, but it is what it is. No perfect system when you have 12 teams. NEB’s schedule is brutal next year though. Just a bear of a schedule.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
iowa is going to be fucking terrible this year.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
Michigan State isn’t winning shit next season. That I can guarantee.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:36 PM
That is awesome.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:36 PM
I’m not saying Michigan is going to be great, but Northwestern’s defense was about as bad as Michigan’s was. Numbers favor Northwestern but they also played an easier schedule. If you’re going to preclude Michigan because of defense Northwestern has to be excluded as well.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:36 PM
Dennis Erickson.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
i know exactly what im looking for but the ol’ google machine’s being a faggot.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
Check out their schedule, though. It’s cake city. No OSU, no Wisconsin. Mich and MSU at home. Road games at NEB and PSU. I’m not saying they’ll be good, but I could see 7-8 wins.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
I really can’t deny this. It’s going to be 2008 again. Hopefully we ruin someone’s season like we did with PSU that year.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
NU’s schedule is only tough in name alone. I would expect to lose to OSU at home, but every other game is more than winnable. I feel safe predicting a rematch with OSU in Indy.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:39 PM
This
That
And choke on a dick. MSU is not losing very much. They have a favorable schedule. I would not be surprised if they are in the Big10 Championship game. You shouldn’t be either. But like I keep saying, don’t sleep on those purple fag ‘cats.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:39 PM
I’m sorry to be such a nitpicker about this, but I’ve been smelling bullshit on this forever. I can see this happening at a lot of top schools. But it just sucks when everyone is saying the same thing that I find more difficult disprove than to prove.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:40 PM
Why does Texas need their own 24 hour network??
January 19th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
NEB’s non-conference is Washington and Fresno with two cupcakes. They then play Wisconsin, Ohio State, Penn State, Iowa, Michigan State and Michigan. Add in tricky Northwestern and I can see 3-4 losses. Again, more of that has to do with their godforsaken offense than anything else.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
id like to say “fuck you” to brian cook for his blog’s awful search engine.
powered by google my ass
January 19th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
What about T-magic?
January 19th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
So they will be good? Every year they say Kirk’s team is going to suck, he has a great year. It’s when they are supposed to be good that they suck.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:43 PM
in total agreement with comment 141 and 142. Can we just crown OSU now and get it over with?
January 19th, 2011 at 3:43 PM
Why does Texas need their own 24 hour network??
Gotta be same place to televise all the poor reporting that Orangebloods does.
Orangebloods seriously sucks. They are the epitome of “let’s throw shit against a wall and see what sticks” reporting.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:43 PM
It is the truth Jersey, but your right that Notre Dame is more whipping boy/bogeyman than ultimate exemplar. The same effect happens everywhere
January 19th, 2011 at 3:44 PM
MGo’s search engine is horrible. The data you want regarding ND is there though.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:44 PM
harbaugh…you should be rooting for MSU. they can derail OSU’s season right off the bat in big ten play.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:45 PM
This.
I was confused as well. Their softball team is killer!
January 19th, 2011 at 3:45 PM
Thanks. I won;t deny the absolute possibility that recruits get a bump by being recruited by ND. But don’t tell me that doesn’t happen at other schools. And definitely don’t tell me ND is the main culprit in such a practice unless you come to me with some glaring examples.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:45 PM
It’s not him I cannot stand. It’s the entire offensive staff coaching him. Add in the fact that NEB is pathetic at the WR position, and I simply have no faith in their offense. They’ve said they are going to go all-in on the Oregon offense. Now, I hate that faggy ass offense, but at least they are going to a system instead of the mish-mash of shit they’ve had the last two years. Pelini needs to get rid of pretty much every staff member on offense and start over. They have some talent there (and they have some great talent coming in) but I don’t think they have the coaching to mold the talent into what it needs to be to win a national (or even conference) title.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:46 PM
I was confused as well. Their softball team is killer!
Hey they used to have Cat Osterman.
/check out the wingspan on that Pteradactyl.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:47 PM
Brady Quinn, Jeff Smaujdasdjh (sp?) and the entire offensive line under Charlie.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:48 PM
That will take the fun out of everything.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:49 PM
jersey…im giving up. ND isn’t the poster boy anymore, but they’re still one of the teams that gets a bump up.
i have nothing to offer other than 15 minutes of frustration.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:50 PM
Again… MSU is a 7-5 team next season. That team is the biggest fraud in the Big Ten. Dantonio can take his Little Giants playbook and go coach in the Big East with Rich Rod.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:50 PM
Brady Quinn was recruited by Michigan and Ohio State. And that was in 2002. Samardzija was recruited by the same guys but wasn’t offered. He may be inflated.. but then he went on to be a STUD wr at ND. Sam Youngmade a decision between USC and ND. Stop it.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:51 PM
im not sure why pelini is so set on the zone read either. if it was a tiny school that can’t recruit, sure, but at nebraska? fuck that…get a power back, if you want option, at least revive the old triple option.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:51 PM
‘cuz there’s 24 million people in the state and it’s growing.
i wonder what aTm’s alumni base is compared to UT’s? aTm would have been a nice get for the SEC.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:51 PM
brady quinn was a 5-star recruit in every sense of the word…he’s not an example.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:52 PM
They don’t have too tough of a schedule, though. Potential losses are: @ND, @OSU, MICH, WIS, NEB. I could see them winning 2 of those games and being 9-3. Maybe 8-4.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:52 PM
And I can live with that. I mean, I am fine with people saying negative things about ND, but bring some facts or evidence, or just admit that its because of personal preference.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:54 PM
that’s what’s so frustrating…i HAVE evidence, i just can’t find it thanks to a shitty search engine. harbaugh knows exactly what article im looking for too.
but it was also kinda old and things have changed.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:54 PM
Pretty sure he was a 4-star…but I was just fucking with Jersey. Ripping on ND is a passion of mine.
I agree. I wish they’d go to Alabama’s offense. Power running game with a TE.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:54 PM
How about Mike Golic Jr. getting an invite to the Army All-American Game as a 240lb Center?
January 19th, 2011 at 3:56 PM
That is all kinds of ridiculous. But I bet that had a lot more to do with his sorta famous father than ND.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:57 PM
That is all kinds of ridiculous. But I bet that had a lot more to do with his sorta famous father than ND.
/next time I get moderated. POP.
January 19th, 2011 at 3:59 PM
see: cris carter’s son, duron.
/he was better than a 3-star on the field but probably a 3-star because he’s dumb as shit
January 20th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
Cal state has no expectations for its football program which has been renamed…
No Heisman U
No QB U
No RoseBowl U
No Outright Pac10Champion U
No BCS U
Tedfurd will be a fixture there as long as he can beat Stanford on a consistent basis. However the program will continue to experience regular beatdowns, lose big games and never be able to get to the top. What else is new.
OTOH, Ricky the Weasel came to Westwood with guns blazing and his version of the pistol offense looks to be without bullets. He is a disaster and Westwood will be looking for a new coach by the end of next year. Westwood hasn’t fielded a really competitive football team in 15 years.
