Oregon’s Awesome New Court
Oregon debuted its brand new $200 million arena last night during a 68-62 victory over USC. This arena answers the question, what if Nike could make the Oregon football uniforms into a large building? The court itself is a “brown-and-tan court that represents a skyward look through a fir forest clearing.” In short, its awesome.
Much like Onion SportsDome, you either love or hate Nike’s newest tribute to Pacific Northwest Excess. Just the fact that it is so very different from any court we’re used to is going to cause people to have a negative reaction. Some of the stuff that Nike does with Oregon is a little over the top, but overall, I like that they’re using them as the ultimate blank canvas to sketch on. Of course, maybe I just like ducks and trees.

NIKE runs all these summer camps for star high school football players and basketball camps I’m sure. Oregon is basically the University of NIKE. They have an incredible advantage. Phil Knight, the Steinbrenner of college athletics.

The absolute worst argument that proponents of ridiculous floors and uniforms (like Oregon) put forth is that “The kids (i.e. student athletes and recruits) like it. This has to be about the most retarded reasoning for expenditure of money that a college can do. College kids also like doing nose candy, funneling Natty Light, and dry humping Tri Delts….does that mean the university should embrace all those things as well?
I’m such an old fashioned person when it comes to uniform and court designs.

I gave my opinion. I didn’t say I was right. I did not say from an empirical point of view it was bad, though if got 100 people in a room, I’d bet you just about anything a majority would agree that the court is not good looking and probably almost as many wouldn’t care.
