Duke Lost to Florida State. Are the Blue Devils Still the Best Team in the Country?
Florida State – a crummy offensive team that was smoked at home by Ohio State in November and lost to lowly Auburn last week – defeated No. 1 Duke last night, 66-61. The Seminoles always seem to play to Duke tough due to their rugged brand of basketball. Duke’s 25-game win streak is over, its big men were finally exposed for lack of offense, the Blue Devils fell in love with the 3-pointer all over again (11-for-35), and you can shelve all those will-they-go-unbeaten stories. Assuming Kyrie Irving doesn’t return, right now is Duke still the team to beat?
Taking a quick look at the other unbeaten teams:
Syracuse: 17-0. Still largely untested. Beat Michigan State at a “neutral” site (MSG), and beat Notre Dame at home. We’ll know more about the ‘Cuse Monday after the road game against Pittsburgh.
Kansas: 16-0. The Jayhawks, too, haven’t hit the difficult portion of their schedule. They’ve played only one team that was ranked (Memphis, which has proven to be a fraud), and have struggled to put away mediocre teams (USC, UCLA, Michigan, Iowa State). I’d rather Kansas slightly above Syracuse right now, but still behind Duke.
Ohio State: 17-0. Least-tested of these three unbeatens. First loss probably comes on the 22nd at Illinois. Depth is our primary concern for the Buckeyes.
San Diego State: 18-0. Not quite in the same class as the above three unbeatens, they’ll probably lose at the Pit Saturday night. Or to Jimmer on the 26th.

Agree. Looking forward to this game. Big Monday will be great this week.

Why is Florida State so happy? It’s just a regular season game and everyone knows the college basketball regular season is made pointless by the tournament.
/shows self out.
January 13th, 2011 at 11:19 AM
Duke got lucky last year because of their lack of depth on the perimeter. This forced Coach K to play two bigs and were able to overwhelm most teams on the interior. He’s back to playing Singler out of position at the 4 again to create a mismatch.
January 13th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
going 7 or 8 deep is fine in CBB.
January 13th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
I am not sure about this but I do know that Cal is the team to pound.
January 13th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
I think they were celebrating as this win helps their RPI and gives them a shot at making the tournament and winning the championship.
January 13th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
So what youre saying is… even with playoffs… the regular season DOES matter..
January 13th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
The answer will be Purdue come the beginning of February. But for right now, gotta be OSU. Pittsburgh-Cuse on Monday is going to be epic.
January 13th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
Anybody see the RPI rankings?

BYU #3 and SDSU #4.
And the committee will still screw them on their seed.

The Seminoles always seem to play to Duke tough due to their rugged brand of basketball.
This has always been my knock on Dook. Get them away from Cameron and they can be taken out of their game by an inferior team with good coaching.
January 13th, 2011 at 11:26 AM
i do think it’s funny that OSU’s the least tested even though you mentioned they blew out the team that just beat no. 1.

BYU, obviously.

Not exactly…what was exposed was that Nolan Smith is not a point guard. He’s played great, but the biggest problem last night was Smith and Singler ignoring everyone else and trying to go at it alone. Three straight possessions in the 2nd half, Mason Plumlee was in PERFECT position down low…guy on his back deep enough on the block to either draw a double team or make a move and potentially draw a foul/make a basket. 1st time, Nolan ignored him, tried to drive and taking a bad shot. 2nd time, Singler didn’t even look, took a bad shot. 3rd time, Smith turned it over trying to drive.
Don’t get me wrong, the Plumlees and Kelly aren’t tremendous back to the basket players, and FSU basically shut down Sullinger during their game…it’s kinda what they do to all opposing big men. However, Zoubek wasn’t a huge threat last year, but merely passing the ball inside opened up the perimeter a lot more, and put Zoubs in position to grab offensive rebounds.
Basically, this is on Smith, Singler (and to a smaller degree, Curry)…if the guards aren’t going to at least throw the ball down low occasionally, either give the only true point guard more minutes (that would be Thornton), or go to the small lineup (Smith/Curry/Dawkins/Singler/Mason or Kelly) and spread the court for the dribble drive. Irving fed Mason ALOT, now he’s been reduced to screening and picking up scraps.
/fuck Kyrie’s toe
January 13th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
True. But does OSU really go 7-8 deep? Seems they only go about 6 deep and pull a 7th for emergency minutes.

January 13th, 2011 at 11:30 AM
Feeding the post has become a lost art in CBB. It’s really disgusting. I’m sure you saw how Miami fails at it with Reggie Johnson in that game at Cameron.
January 13th, 2011 at 11:30 AM
That’s pretty much the same with any team. It seems that more often than not a team will lose a road game in conference that they “shouldn’t lose” rather than the one that would be considered a toss up.

January 13th, 2011 at 11:31 AM
Doesn’t this type of thing seem to happen over the course of a Duke season every year regardless of whether they win a title or not at the end of the year? Lose on the road to a average conference team where they storm the court afterwards. Then Duke goes on to win their next ten while FSU will lose to NC St or Georgia Tech or however they play next and they end up in the NIT.

He’s not a good coach overall. He’s been coaching since ’86 and I think he’s gotten past the first round of the NCAA’s twice in almost 25 years.
January 13th, 2011 at 11:35 AM
Does FSU qualify?
Hamilton has done a pretty good job during his time at FSU. It’s not easy recruiting hoops players there.
It seems that more often than not a team will lose a road game in conference
Road conference games are one thing, but Dook is typically highly regarded until they’re “disappionting” tournament loss.

January 13th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
Dude, lightweight? 4 beers = puke?
At least you were drinking. It’s been my experience that the hardcore bball fan – the one that wears the student section t-shirt, starts chants, storms the court – tends to be a huge freaking nerd who doesn’t drink at games because it decreases his concentration on the hatred he has for the visiting team’s bench.
January 13th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
I’ve only done it once, when we won (a share of) the Big East title in 2000 by beating St. John’s in overtime. Oddly enough our coach was Leonard Hamilton at the time. You run down hive five players and all that, then your follow the procession off the court to the exits, it’s a very awkward walk back through the exits, like that scene in Austin Powers where they are doing the evil laugh and the scene keeps going until they stop laughing and just look around.
He’s certainly not a great overall coach which is why I said he is great defensively. He can build a program into a tournament team over time. He took over Miami when they blew goats and eventually got them to the Sweet 16 before jestting for the Wizards.
January 13th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
Well, you’re elated for whatever reason. Then you leave. Hopefully, you’re grinding up on that cute girl that you saw at the dining hall. You go “Man this was a great game…” and see where it goes from there. If she responds positively, its dinner for two at the dining hall time! If she just ignores you, its hoping that your roommate doesn’t come back for a while because you have some frustration to work out. Then, its Black Ops time.

Dirt gone, Fetch gone, Taguchi banned, seriously if Jersey werent still around what would be the point.
January 13th, 2011 at 11:44 AM
Duke has two problems right now. The first is the loss of Irving. Losing Irving’s offense and scoring ability hurts the them badly. That is the obvious loss but it also hurts their offense because Nolan Smith is a better two guard than point. With Smith and Irving you have two guys that can drive and get to the rim in the backcourt. The other guards who come in off the bench do not attack the basket the way that Irving and Smith do. And I would argue that Nolan Smith is much more effective for the overall offense playing off the ball (his stats may be better with Irving out but Dukes offense has certainly suffered.)
Second problem which is much bigger is that they are going to be beaten inside this year because they have no depth underneath nor do they have a player who is willing to play with a disregard for the rules like Zoubek did for them last year. (He did. The refs turned a blind eye. If Cousins played like Zoubek did last year he would have been hit with technicals at least once a game.) Duke is going to have tremendous trouble with teams who have a strong presence inside and who force Nolan Smith to settle for contested jumpers instead of getting to the rim and dishing the ball to Curry or their other shooters who are on the perimeter waiting to shoot threes.
January 13th, 2011 at 11:44 AM

Craft (Freshman. Great handle. Gonna be really good)
Buford (Scorer, becoming a better all around player)
Lighty (Leader, all round player. Only guy left from Final 4 team)
Diebler (soon to be Big Ten All Time 3pt leader)
Sullinger (FOY, possibly POY)
Lauderdale (Defensive presence in the paint)
Thomas (Freshman. Instant Offense)
If either Sibert or Lenzelle Smith (both Freshmen) can become a solid contributer by the end of the year, thats 8.

Jersey – tonight’s game at Minny should tell us a lot about Purdue. This will be the first real test against a team with size. Tubby can get guys to bang JJ all night. That sweet sixteen season was his one great success. He can recruit though. I remember when he left Okie State and Eddie Sutton came in and coached up all the talent Hamilton brought in. I think he may have gone to the sweet sixteen the first two years post-Hamilton. Hamilton still has only 3 tournament wins in close to 25 years in major conferences.

FSU lost to Auburn. Auburn is the worst or second worst BCS team in the country this year. Transitive property does not work in college basketball.
As a Cuse fan, Pitt is the best team in the country. They can lock you down when they need to and their offense is ridiculously efficient. This isn’t the Pitt offense of the chuck and go get it days. They’ve destroyed UConn and Georgetown (A Gtown team that desperately needed a win) and proved how good they are. I fully expect Pitt to put away syracuse on Monday and that’s not a reverse jinx. That’s a fact. Last time the Cuse beat Pitt in the BE regular season? 2004.
By the by, who has Duke beaten? Michigan state? Butler? Their wins are going to look awfully light by the end of the year because of how bad the ACC is.

Big East is the best conference this year for all the beat downs they put on OOC opponents. But you can make a reasonable argument for the Big 10. Northwestern getting lit up by St. Johns probably didn’t help.
January 13th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
You think Purdue is just an OK team? Illinois and Wisconsin are pretty fucking legit, too. And I’m a big east guy.

January 13th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
Pomeroy has 45% of the Big Ten in his top 25. 38% of the Big East. 33% of the Big 12.
January 13th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
No not really, but let’s say Duke goes 28-3 or 29-2 with wins against MSU, Butler, Kansas St., UNC, Maryland and Pitt goes 27-4 with wins over Syracuse, Uconn, villanova, Louisville, Texas and notre Dame. If that’s the case you can make an argument that Pitt would deserve a one seed in the East which is in Newark and put Duke as the 1 seed in New Orleans.
that’s a huge difference this year. That’s really what I was getting at.
January 13th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
I don’t know about that. I think your Jayhawks are the best team in the country personally. Kansas State being bad really hurts the conference, but I think Missouri, Texas, A&M are all good, Baylor has a really high ceiling, and Colorado has shown it can beat anybody.
January 13th, 2011 at 12:09 PM

January 13th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
Minny is weird. They’ve got as much size as anyone in the country and Al Nolen is a senior guard that can get to the bucket and break down defenses. Plus, they have a lights out shooter in Hoffarber. They’ll be a good tournament team, although it doesn’t help that Devoe Joseph
transferred.
January 13th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
That’s a team NO ONE is talking about. Their defense is really good and their offense is good enough to get them going. I don’t think they shoot it well enough to go to a Final four, but they are a top 4 seed in the tournament at worst.
One note about Purdue. Someone call me when they beat someone. Anyone. If they go on the road and beat Minnesota I’ll start believing. They were handed a ridiculously easy start to the Big 10 schedule. Let’s see where they’re at after this stretch in January/February.
Michigan State, OSU, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, OSU.
god speed to the boilers.
January 13th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
K State only plays bottom feeders Tech and OU once each. It would be funny if they finished under .500 in conference and didn’t make the NCAA’s. Don’t see it happening, but it’s at least possible.

My question is if Ohio State is the No. 1 overall seed (I have some doubts but we’ll see), will they go to Newark or will Pitt/SU go there as a lesser seed based on East coast following? Does Duke go there no matter what if they’re a one-seed?

And the argument would be correct. Although Pitt needs to shore up its defense a little bit, I still think they’re the best team in nation, loss or no loss.
Of course, I suspect Duke would get put in New Orleans anyways, even though Newark would definitely be preferable.

You’re right about the Big East, but wrong in how you concluded it. If you’re using OOC wins as a measure, then it’d be the Big 12. They had the best OOC winning %. So, now you see that you can’t measure much with OOC because the Big 12 isn’t actually the best.

Ohio State football is 18-1 to win the title in football next year? That’s absurdly low. They’ll be 4-0 when they battle Michigan State, and they might have Pryor and friends for that game depending on ruling.

I still want to know what the NCAA was thinking with the regional sites. San Antonion AND New Orleans? They’re only 550 miles from each other. They left the whole middle of the country wide open. I guess they didn’t want to go back to Indy or whatever, but it’s ridiculous they put two regionals right next to each other. OSU is going to get the screw job and have to go to San Antonio and play Texas in the sweet 16. You can see this from a mile away.

Trust me, I’ve seen the Buckeyes live several times and Ohio State has the depth but Matta doesn’t choose to go that route. Same thing last year and it caught up with us in the tournament against Tennessee. That and a lack of intensity on defense at times could be their downfall again.
