Onion SportsDome: Love It or Hate It?
Onion SportsDome premiered last night and received mixed reviews. Not from me – I have great taste and found it hilarious – but from certain high-ranking people on the internet. All previous sports/comedy shows have failed miserably, so the idea of actually laughing at Onion SportsDome confused some people.
Talking about SportsDome on Twitter got a big reaction with everyone either enjoying or absolutely hating it. King-maker/site-breaker Darren Rovell panned OSD. I assume he saw the screener because he didn’t wait long into the premiere to start bashing it. Hey, its alright that not everyone finds something funny. You either get it or you don’t. That’s why Beerfest is only a 6.1 on IMDB while The Hangover is 7.9. On no planet is The Hangover funnier than Beerfest, but everyone will tell you how hilarious The Hangover is.
Its as simple as that. Many people need to be told what to like and most of the time, they don’t listen. So here I am telling you that its OK to enjoy Onion SportsDome. Will half of you tell me I’m an idiot for liking it? There’s only one way to find out. Here’s your chance to tell me just how dumb I am. Vote. Be American. I’m opening this up to the masses. Winner has the better sense of humor.
Also, Tosh.0 premiered last night.

I laughed out loud a lot. I have a feeling people will pan it though, because it’s what people do.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
I liked both the Hangover and Beerfest, why does the internet always pit brother against brother?
Thought this show was decent, will watch it again…the metal hands fighter Chris Connolly spoof killed me
January 12th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
SportsDome > Jimmer
January 12th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
how much you want to bet the same people were confused when people were laughing during a taping of the daily show when they expected serious news.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
I thought it was funny b/c it kicked Sportscenter in the balls. But will it hold up? I think not. The casual tv watcher will not be interested.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
So fucking funny. Love the Roethlisberger jokes.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
I’m just thrilled there’s one other person on this planet that doesn’t think The Hangover was the funniest film made in the last 30 years.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
!
January 12th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
I enjoyed the clip. I’ll watch the show when I get home.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
All previous sports/comedy shows have failed miserably, so the idea of actually laughing at Onion SportsDome confused some people
Confused? You mean retarded, the show is on f’ing COMEDY Channel!
January 12th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
I thought the Escaped Retired NFL players bit was pretty funny. There were a few other laugh out loud moments (The Big 3 banning Kobe), but overall I thought a lot of the jokes were forced.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
I thought it was okay. I thought the acted stuff was funny, but the fake news reports would have been funner had I just read them. The parody of Sportscenter was dead on, but that seems more like a skit than a show premise.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
The Hangover was funny, but I’ve seen a lot of movies that are much funnier. Grandma’s Boy FTW.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Was Lights Out any good? I was gettin my hood on and watching The Game.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
I agree with this. It was funny one time. I don’t think this will work every week.
/Can’t believe I agreed with Duffy
//Fuck Michigan
January 12th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
Looks like we got the Brits in round 1. We already kicked their asses in WWII. Cheer-i-o, let’s do it again.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
I got fucked up and watched Netflix, I had meant to watch this.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
It was funny, but I would have liked them to go more after current events vs fake news story
January 12th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
I forgot to watch, but I did see some clips online. I saw a “Top Ten Athletes Named Stan” clip, and I laughed out loud when Ben Roethlisberger was #1. I could SO see SportsCenter doing that.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
It had some funny one liners, but I don’t see how this show holds up over time. Yeah, it is making fun of Sports Center. I get it.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
Hasn’t the show been advertising on this site? And it then gets a good review from it after it airs?
Interesting.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
bahahaha. +a million
January 12th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
The Shaq bit had me rolling.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
I liked it. Very funny on some of the stuff, some of it not so much but thats to be expected when every sentence for 30 minutes is a joke.
I loved the set and the parody of Sportscenter…loved the ‘experts’, the graphics, the tables, even the people and the way they dress and talk….really good.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
damn those germans for starting WWII by bombing pearl harbor! they’re next!
January 12th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
I have a feeling that KC Resident’s reaction will be the more common reaction as time progresses on this show.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
It killed me at the theater but I was sauced. The DVD viewing did nothing for me. I’m sure a lot of movies are like that
January 12th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
Movies are always funnier when watching with a large group.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
Well, the only important question is, “WHAT WERE THE RATINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
January 12th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
I get looked at like I have 3 heads when I tell people I don’t think that movie was very funny.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
There is this one planet, but its inhabitants are fucking retarded.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
.
I thought it was solid, which is good enough for any pilot. I hope whoever plays Light’s blonde daughter is over 18, because she can get it.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
I thought it was funny but what the hell do I know.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
Ah yes, the Borat Effect
January 12th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
but why
January 12th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
Replace “The Hangover” with “Wedding Crashers” and you have a deal.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
Of course Darren Rovell is in DC-lobbyist mode; he is exactly the type of character that SportsDome is mimicking: the stuffy, obnoxious talking head who treats sports like a mix of investment banking and war (THIS IS NOT FUNNY!!! THIS IS SPORTS!!!). Rovell and the rest of the sports media eulogists need to loosen up and stop taking themselves so seriously. I’ve seen priests that have a better sense of humor than 99% of these mainstream blowhards.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
most people don’t want to be the loser who doesn’t laugh…and laughter is infectious and all that jazz.
and doesn’t it look weird when you’re in a group of people at a theatre and there’s one creepy guy, probably with BO, all by himself, laughing his ass off?
January 12th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
Hell, The Other Guys was funnier than The Hangover.
Beerfest grew on me eventually.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
Only if it’s the first hour and 15 min of Wedding Crashers.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
I usually bite my lip when people speak of Old School as being a great comedy…different strokes and all that jazz
January 12th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
The last movie to crack me up at the theater was Unstoppable, but that was probably because there was an older black gentleman in front of me that was screaming things like “oh come on white boy! grab that shit!” and anytime Denzel said something that wasn’t even really funny he gave out a good hearty cackle. I highly recommend seeing unstoppable this way.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Drew Sharp is such a hack. Anyone listen to that interview he gave on the DP show? Hard to tell hes a Meeeeeechigan Man.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
old school was hilarious in college…the farther you get away from it the less funny it is.
but then again, that was probably the best time for that group of comedians to make a movie. none were carrying the film all by themselves which none of them can really do.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
I usually bite my lip when people speak of Old School as being a great comedy…different strokes and all that jazz
That movie sucked. It had some funny moments, but holy shit, does Will Feral only know how to play one character? And Luke Wilson is a shitty actor. That old guy from Best in Show was the best part about that movie.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:01 AM
I liked the Brewers getting repossesed then the photo going into the break of Ryan Braun wrapped in moving tape being loaded into a van. Screw the people saying this premise cant last every week, I have been waiting my whole life for someone to make fun of ESPN as much as possible.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:01 AM
Disagreed but that’s only because I’m an unapologetic Anchorman supporter
January 12th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
“This is Azamat, he is fat.”
Kills me, every time, whether I’m with anyone or not.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
even anchorman wasn’t carried completely by farrell. at least in my opinion, some of the funniest scenes were pulled off by the supporting cast.
don’t get me wrong, i like to put on anchorman/old school every now and then for a good laugh.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
It’s kind of telling that people hate ESPN so much they thought this horribly unfunny piece of shit show was funny.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
Paul Rudd carried Anchorman.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
By the way, has anyone else seen the Onion Movie?
No? Didn’t think so.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
I liked SportsDome. But I could easily see how people didn’t like it. Who would you kill made me laugh uncontrollably. What needs to be repeated was how fucking Tosh.O was last night. The early lead for funniest thing I’ve heard all year:
January 12th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
Drew Sharp is garbage. Question for all my Michigan peeps. Does it bug you when people say Meeechigan? It bugs the fuck out of me.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
at the IMDB.com Alien prequel board (2013):
too funny
January 12th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
Role Models is better than Beerfest and The Hangover.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
That was fucking hilarious.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
Was the lead story Brady Hoke to Michigan?
January 12th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
This is what qualifies for humor in Rovell’s book, from his Twitter feed:
“Shocked to see Tostitos in my supermarket tonight. I thought Auburn won all of them?”
This is enough to warrant an ass-whipping, in some circles.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
I think Tropic Thunder and Hangover are very funny.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
You know I have, but they have to do it right. The parody has to be of ESPN, not sports. The meth highlights segment I just watched was not funny. Now if they parody how ESPN kisses LeBron’s ass and how they turn unfounded rumors into top news stories, I think that would be funny.
Think of them parodying ESPN’s NFL coverage the same way “The Naked Gun” made fun of baseball (13 people in the booth, including Dr. Joyce Brothers). That’s what I would like to see.
But yeah, I don’t know how long that would stay original. But then again, ESPN always drops to lows that we never thought we had in them.
/fire away–talk about how I hate ESPN–I can take it
January 12th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
Fact.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
@texansfan: AVP:requim was the worst trash i’ve ever seen in theatres. the funny thing is, that was probably brought up in a meeting somewhere in hollywood when discussing the alien prequel, and odds are, by the same guy that thinks ID4 needs sequels.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
i thought sportsdome was pretty good, lots of potential. there is a ton of ESPN stuff that needs to be made fun of, so i hope they realize that.
anchorman is the tits. best comedy of past 10 years. hangover was way overrated. a tad douchey.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
I mean, you guys know Rovell has a close relationship with ESPN right? No shock that he was already trashing the show 5 minutes in.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
That “lack of predators” criticism is true of far too many films these days.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
They kind of did this with that opening Heat skit.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
definitely held true for “Sweet Home Alabama” and “The Notebook”
/CRM
January 12th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
This makes me feel great.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
No doubt. Wasnt Alien Vs Predator fan created so they made a video game out of it? I absolutely lost my shit once the predator helped the female character in the first one. It was complete garbage but that just totally killed me. Predator is supposed to stab her in the gut with a spear, not fucking help her!
January 12th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
Right, they can do all of this. There is so much left untapped to make fun of. They got the Outside the Lines and the suspended news anchor in this episode. I have no problem with the rest of the show being about sports. Those stories are just like the articles they write.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
At least in Requiem that little kid gets face huggered at the start of it, that shit was HILARIOUS.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
haha, i told my wife to close her eyes when the kid woke up
January 12th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
I think the same could be said for all the Adam Sandler movies and even Ace Ventura.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
The Dark Knight is the tits. best comedy of past 10 years.
/fixed
January 12th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
Can we get a Cowherd warning on links along the lines of NSFW?
January 12th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
I can’t believe there wasn’t more outrage over this. That McLovin kid was AWFUL in that movie.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
Still haven’t seen either one and I haven’t seen the Onion show. My schedule is pretty booked.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
Stop watching Joe Montana’s SportsCentury and make the time
January 12th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
The Meth scene was great, as was the concept behind the ex-NFL players. There is so much potential for this show. I really hope they do well with it.
January 12th, 2011 at 1:18 PM
me too.
January 12th, 2011 at 1:21 PM
As a long-time Onion fan (and fan of their movie) I was really excited about this show, but i have to say that I only laughed once, and not very hard. Yes, the meth skit. And I laugh at just about everything.
The rest? I can’t help but think people found it funny because they really, really, really wanted it to be funny. Onion has a long enough history of being funny to warrant me watching a second episode, but its got to at least make me laugh as much as your everyday episode of PTI…
