January 7th, 2011 at 8:18 AM
FOR WHAT? Going out and trying to work a deal for a coach that could be off the market for a long time if you don’t act now?
He’s boys with Harbaugh. He tried to get him. It didn’t work out.
Sparano deserves another year anyway. He’s a very good coach who doesn’t have all world talent on his team.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:20 AM
Jersey, can you contact that kids uncle from your video yesterday? Him and his belt are needed elsewhere.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:23 AM
I love Harbaugh both as a player and coach, but the media needs to quit acting like he is the secong coming of Lombardi with this insane coverage. I think he will do just fine in the NFL, if he is in the right situation, but nothing else that is going to blow people away.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:24 AM
@Trey — If he thought Harbaugh was a shot he had to take, I agree, he had to go for it.
Maybe he deserves criticism for not controlling the situation better, if it was possible to do so. Maybe he deserves criticism for not letting Sparano go once this all went public, hard to claim you have full confidence in your coach at this point.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:29 AM
This I agree with, but I don’t think it was ever his intention.
Still, Sparano knows 2011 is going to be a make or break year.
When your employer doesn’t have full confidence in your abilities there is only one thing to do…prove him wrong. I hate when teams cut coaches after two-three years and try something new. It fails…a lot.
I’m glad the Phins are keeping Sparano around, every coach (so long as they haven’t created a mutinous environment) should get at least four years to get the talent they need around them.
Look at McDaniels…he’s not stupid turning down the 9ers for a assistant position. He knows he needs a team that is more fit to his style, or he’ll be out in two years ago.
All sports these days are just so quick to toss a coach.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:29 AM
The year Freddy Sanchez won the batting title, he agreed to hit against some of these pitchers in a wiffle ball game. He didn’t even make contact. There used to a youtube of it, but I can’t readily find it.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:31 AM
I concur, Trey.

January 7th, 2011 at 8:41 AM
sparano’s a shit coach who never would’ve been hired in the first place if he didn’t agree to be a puppet.
fire sparano, hire mike nolan.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:43 AM
And then if you want to be good. SIgn Leinart. If you want to suck for another 3 years and never look like a real football team ever again, trade for Kyle Orton. Thank me later.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:48 AM
Oh I get it… reverse psychology because you’re a Jets fan and want Miami to suck. Very clever.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:49 AM

January 7th, 2011 at 8:50 AM
Is anyone who comments here a science teacher in the South? Is it as hard as it seems?
January 7th, 2011 at 8:50 AM
If you really want Miami to suck then hire brian schottenheimer as your coach.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:52 AM
I couldn’t imagine being a science teacher in the bible belt. Crazy politicians and parents demanding you to teach creationism over evolution.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:53 AM
I went to school in the south and I remember our high school biology teacher teaching us about evolution, but I was in a big city so maybe it is different elsewhere down there.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:53 AM

January 7th, 2011 at 8:55 AM
I love my neighbors
January 7th, 2011 at 8:56 AM
The teacher in the linked article was definitely playing with fire if she was spending time ripping apart particular passages of the Bible. Just not needed.
That being said, obviously people who think creationism needs to be taught alongside evolution in Science class don’t know what Science means.
January 7th, 2011 at 8:56 AM
I went to a private school, and my 8th grade bio teacher said “if you don’t believe in evolution, that’s fine. You still have to learn it or you fail.”
January 7th, 2011 at 9:02 AM
We all agree her best work was Poison Ivy 3 right? RIght?
January 7th, 2011 at 9:02 AM
I teach at a college in Iowa, but one of my advisees came to my office to complain (vehemently, I might add) about her Biology prof. teaching evolution “as if it were actually true.” She went on to tell me that as someone who was a “new Christian,” she didn’t know if she could sit in a classroom and listen to someone reject Jesus’s teachings.
I really didn’t know what to say. But I did tell her she might want to reconsider her choice of major (which was pre-med). She’s now an art major and wants to be a youth minister.
/Ignorance of science nationwide.

Hogs have 70% of their two-deep coming back on both sides of the ball next year. all 4 WR’s and the starting RB. they need to replace a couple guys on the OL and replacing DJ Williams at TE will be tough, but I think they will be all right next year.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:04 AM
Apologies in advance, but is anyone really surprised?
January 7th, 2011 at 9:04 AM

I was at the game, sickening. My friend was on the sideline right where it happened. So glad to hear not only that this kid is recovering but his attitude as well.

yes, even camped out one year.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:11 AM
He looked very good against AUB, but it seems any QB with a pulse looks good against AUB. Arkansas does bring back a lot though. They should be pretty good.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:11 AM

January 7th, 2011 at 9:12 AM
If they work on catching the f’ing ball.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:12 AM
yeah, Tyler Wilson, who played in the second half of the Auburn game. Brandon Mitchell is the other backup, totally different style and hasn’t seen much game action, but supposed to be decent in his own right. it’s nice to be at least mildly optimistic going into the spring/next year.

Stefan Leflors(?) was really good too.
Arkansas is a team that would do well to take a flier on Carl Pelini as DC. Wouldn’t take much to lure him away either.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:19 AM
so have we learned not to listen to “sources” on bullshit announcments, ie harbaugh?
January 7th, 2011 at 9:20 AM
No, I didn’t husker. I’m sure I know people he knew (that’s how it works at Duke), but didn’t know him.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:21 AM
arkansas needs to go back to their traditional unis (get rid of all that bullshit striping and the razorbacks on the side of the pants), get carl pelini or luke fickell (osu co-DC who’s a rising star in the coaching ranks and will be gone soon) and you could have a powerhouse. the support is there and this could be a destination job.

With Saints’ RBs Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory out for the Seattle game, can New Orleans easily handle the Seahawks with Julius Jones carrying the football?
With the Saints not being able to run the ball and still having to travel to the west coast on a short week I think SEA +10.5 is looking good. Seattle isn’t very good but they did play the Saints somewhat tight in the dome.

Tell me, doctor, where are we going this time
Is this the 50′s, or 1999
All I wanted to do – was play my guitar and sing
So take me away, I don’t mind
But you’d better promise me, I’ll be back in time
Gotta get back in time
Don’t bet your future, on one roll of the dice
Better remember, lightning never strikes twice
Please don’t drive eighty eight, don’t wanna be late again
So take me away, I don’t mind
But you better promise me, I’ll be back in time
Gotta get back in time

anybody familiar with the Chapel Hill area? I’m going there for a few days at the beginning of Feb and the mrs. is interviewing at UNC. is it a nice place to live?
January 7th, 2011 at 9:25 AM
He ended up going to Michigan for Law school and he has perhaps the greatest story of all time. He’s a diabetic, but he drinks a lot (we used to call him the dumbest smart person in the world due to the crazy shit he would do). Well, he was really low at one of the cafeterias (not sure if this was at UM or Duke, but I think it was at UM) and he was aimlessly wandering the place when two campus cops approached him. Apparently he flips out and cold cock one cop, breaking his jaw and then body slams the other one before he can be subdued. Because he was low and had a “medical excuse,” he got off without any charges or even a write up. He said he visited the cop in the hospital.

I know it is tough to win in Seattle and the Seahags have looked respectable at home. But to paraphrase Mike Singeltary: I can’t do it, I need a winner.
Seahags have gotten blown out in every loss, I just don’t see that changing. I hope they Saints ML is better than -500, because I’m going to bet that.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:26 AM
Geebus.
I can’t argue with this point…..though his handling of the Alex Smith/Aaron Rodgers selection was a little less than desirable. Wonder Jed has a long way to go to learn anything about running a team. Right attitude about winning, (much better than his old man) but his follow through is sorry. “Money was no object” in the Harbaugh chase, but we weren’t going to beat Miami’s alledged offer. “We are going to make the playoffs” after 0-5. My guess is that this may be what a young Jerry Jones was like. Great intentions of winning, but you don’t actually want him to have a hand in molding the team.
Don’t even get me started on the hiring of Baalke…..
January 7th, 2011 at 9:27 AM
Bo shot that down today. Some website I’ve never heard of lead with the classic “a source close to Pelini says that he may be interested in talking…” or some shit like that.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:27 AM
My sister lives up there and I’ve visited her many times and had friends that went to UNC so I’ve been around there a bit. I hate the Tarheels but it is a nice area IMO. If you can deal with all the liberal douches in pastel blue collar shirts and sandals, awesome place.

Willy Robinson is Petrino’s boy, so I don’t think he is going anywhere. too his credit his D got tons better from last year. it still takes him until halftime to make adjustments, but the defense has made marked improvements since he’s been here.

Thank you. Glad that got shot down quickly, as I knew there was no way in hell it was going to happen. Makes settling for Hoke the Joke that more inevitable.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:33 AM
Yes, there’s plenty of nice areas. If you don’t mind hippies, Carboro is nice and cheap.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:33 AM
A couple thoughts on the Harbaugh thing:
This, along with several other media “stories” in the last week just make my skin crawl. I, for one, am tired of the media trying to BE the story instead of REPORTING the story.
“Anonymous” sources, twitter feeds, and the ever popular “I heard” have been burned so many times in the last week that the singed smell won’t go away for weeks/months.
I’d just like someone to write the story about what happened once it has transpired instead of being part of the story itself. This blame can be thrown at the “World Wide Leader”, Source Jockeys that “report” for publications, and even blogs (sorry TBL).
What this “jumping the gun” technique has done this week is to get the Jets, foot fetishes, and Dongslinger out of the limelight for at least a few days. So, with the dark, there is always at least a sliver of light.
/Steps off soapbox and grabs morning coffee

Stefan Leflors(?) was really good too.
LeFors, he was a backup with the Edmonton Eskimos for a couple years, struggled as the part time starter with the Blue Bombers last year. Currently a FA I believe.
Thanks to the folks that were discussing the Song of Ice and Fire series (think it was SG and sportsdork), enjoying the first one so far.

January 7th, 2011 at 9:35 AM
I understand your point, but did you see the game? the cards win had absolutely nothing to do with max hall. It was incredibly flukey. IIRC the Cards D played well and had 2 TD returns.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:35 AM
that’s how Willy rolls, unfortunatly. it takes him a half, shit Vandy rolled up and down the field a couple times on them in the first half then had something like 19 yards the entire second half.

I need a Philly in this week. I want to see Vick and Co. go into Chicago. I also think ATL can handle NO easier than GB. The Packers seem to be playing quite well as of late, and those receivers scare the shit out of me.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:37 AM

I was hoping for some old school glimpses but like 80% of them were from this decade. Still cool nontheless.
I’ve been searching all the links for the hockey one because the tag is listed. I can only assume that Johnny Weir is the “hockey” link
January 7th, 2011 at 9:37 AM
I’d like to think that the Hogs punter acting like Mike Scifres and Tressel’s usual buttoning up of the offense had a great deal to do with this. Everything that worked in the 1st half wasn’t run in the 2nd due to field position or Stalin style conservatism.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:37 AM

As they should, with the Falcons secondary. Abraham would need to have one of his dominant games.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:40 AM
This. I’m extremely biased, and I credit the Hogs second half defense success to the vest going into full Tresselball mode. Arky would have been burned if he let TP keep airing it out to uncovered receivers.
Max Hall. Leader.

Saving up for the trip to Dallas, no reason to fly out to watch this initial speed bump (I’ve been trying on optimism this past month, kinda fun)…also not worth the risk of getting stabbed in the stands, we’re a fun loving bunch, don’t care for that angry scene

Is that what your settling on as a Michigan Man? Just a good coach? There are lots of “good coaches” out there. And he’s over weight.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:42 AM
Max Hall didn’t lead Jack. Same with mierda last season
January 7th, 2011 at 9:42 AM
I understand your point, but did you see the game? the cards win had absolutely nothing to do with max hall. It was incredibly flukey. IIRC the Cards D played well and had 2 TD returns.
I did. Yeah it was flukey but if the Saints can’t run the ball that leads to a greater chance of turnovers and crap like that. Look no way I think the Saints lose this game I just think it could be much tougher than it probably should be. Living in NOLA I’ve sadly seen most Saints games and when they can’t run the ball their offense struggles mightily.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:42 AM
Should I have been surprised when the Eagles released a bunch more tickets to the public yesterday because Green Bay didn’t sell their allotment? Butters, I thought you people were better than this?
Can’t expect these small schools to sell out for an away game in the first round.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:42 AM
There is nothing worse or more tiresome than a guy who got rich in one field who thinks he is good at everything. That’s what Ross is sounding like to me.

Gator fans > UNC fans
January 7th, 2011 at 9:43 AM
Taguch- What did you think of Machete? Michelle Rodriguez seemed nice.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:43 AM
Maybe they don’t care for being hit by batteries?
January 7th, 2011 at 9:44 AM
it’s funny, but this is how i felt when tressel was hired. not the overweight part, but the “just a good coach” part.
you never know with these things. remember when auburn fans posted this when chizik was hired?
January 7th, 2011 at 9:44 AM
Pussies, I say.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:44 AM
He looks like Mike Golic which is a huge negative, but he is gonna be the only person who will accept the job. So there’s that.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:44 AM
I’ll never bowl again.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:45 AM
Like Martin Brodeur? At least Steve Ross isn’t over rated.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:45 AM
I couldn’t imagine being a science teacher in the bible belt. Crazy politicians and parents demanding you to teach creationism over evolution
Not from the South, but watched great American Experience on Robert E Lee on Monday. He was a scholar from West Point and great engineer and tactician. Then he found God in his 40′s just before Civil War and got a lot of men slaughtered because he believed “God was on his side”
January 7th, 2011 at 9:45 AM
They should go after Tate Forcier to keep the pipeline going.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:45 AM
Not since 2005.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:46 AM
Taking the wife out tonight….dinner and a movie.
The Fighter or Black Swan?
Go.
(From a movie standpoint, not from a carpet munching standpoint)
January 7th, 2011 at 9:47 AM
Taguch- What did you think of Machete? Michelle Rodriguez seemed nice.
Still haven’t watched. I’ve got it, the American, and The Last Excorism sitting by the TV.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:47 AM
Jim Irsay just reported that the Jets returned some tickets and they’ll be available soon…TBL needs to do some field reporting and get out to that game
January 7th, 2011 at 9:47 AM
See, this is why the viewing of a single television program does not make one an expert in a subject.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:47 AM
context please. they are taller? they taste better grilled with barbecue sauce? they are douchier? they are nicer?
January 7th, 2011 at 9:47 AM
Like Martin Brodeur? At least Steve Ross isn’t over rated.
Semen. Drink it.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:48 AM
Haven’t seen the Fighter yet, but Black Swan was great. Plus it only strengthened my stance that you Portman haters have something mentally wrong with you.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:48 AM
Yours or Mila Kunis’?
January 7th, 2011 at 9:48 AM
I was not aware there was such a thing.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:49 AM
God,
I know you and I have had our differences, but if you truly exist, then strike down on Glendale (say, around 9:30 EST time) and prove to me you really care. The fact that Gene fucking Chizik or that prick from Oregon is about to win a title is nauseating.
Signed,
Fairness
January 7th, 2011 at 9:49 AM

I was not aware there was such a thing.
They’re everywhere. You probably eat lunch with one every day. One might pick up your garbage.

January 7th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
I loathe Gator fans, but UNC fans are even worse.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
I was guessing he meant in tolerable factor, which is why I made comment 141.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
Hear hear! Bowling alleys here converted to non smoking. It is nicer inside now but my favorite bowling alley now is crawling with annoying little shit heads and their birthday parties.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
I feel awful even sharing this link. God dammit, world.

Salt Lake City 2002, Vancouver 2010.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:51 AM
At night most bowling alleys are clearly bars where people occasionally bowl.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:51 AM
Could you imagine a top-flight program picking an FCS coach in today’s win now climate?
A fun post might be to look back at the last 10-15 major college football hires and look at where the coach came from, what the reaction was, and finally the result.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:52 AM
Black Swan, brah.
Haven’t seen The Fighter, don’t plan on it.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:52 AM
Not a Civil War expert but I thought Lee was like (name of coach that succeeds with shitty players and management). He got the most out of a group of rag tag soldiers and the northern Generals shat their pants just thinking about him.
/not a southern apologist
//glad the north won

January 7th, 2011 at 9:52 AM
Then he found God in his 40′s just before Civil War and got a lot of men slaughtered because he believed “God was on his side”
Well, clearly God was not on the side of those who were slaughtered. Duh.
It always perplexes me when the survivors of a plane crash or some other natural disaster or cancer say something like “God must have been watching out for me.” — What about all those whom God wasn’t “watching out for” — what are their families supposed to think?
/my apologies for throwing gasoline on the fire

Bowling team? No. I am on a drinking team with a bowling habit.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:53 AM
Can we black out Bill Callahan in that conversation. I just like to pretend those 3-4 years never happened. I went to bed after watching NEB drub Michigan State with Pelini as interim coach, and I woke up with Pelini being the head coach 4 years later.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:53 AM
I can’t stand John L. Smith. yes the kicking game looked good in the bowl game, but there were special teams breakdowns throughout the year.

And more to the point, have these policy makers ever seen a group photo of a bowling league? These people aren’t the sort to pull up the country’s average life span. Who are you trying save.

If it’s not too much of a hassle, take the Coyotes as well.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
I know, it’s Friday….I just leave it at, all of this right here.

This is hard to argue with.

He’s the one that has to see the movie. Nawt you, nawt you, and NAWHT YOU!!!!
January 7th, 2011 at 9:57 AM
Chizik isn’t the first coach that Gus Malzahn made look better than he really is. I know Auburn fans think Chizik walks on water right now, but isn’t he a defensive minded coach? IMO he made a great hire for his OC, which bailed him out of probably 4 or 5 games this year. without Malzahn (and Cam obviously) this team doesn’t sniff a BCS bowl.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:57 AM
Sure, as long as the 2005 Alamo Bowl result gets reversed.
/Why didn’t Ecker pitch it to Breaston?
//Worst officiated game I’ve ever seen

If God was watching out for them, the plane crash, illness, natural disaster, etc. presumeably would never have happened in the first place. Its amusing to me that that always gets skipped over.

January 7th, 2011 at 9:58 AM
people love to rag on erickson, but he wasn’t the worst coach in the world. he’s responsible for bringing joe gibbs’ single back offense to college football.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:58 AM
Can we black out Bill Callahan in that conversation. I just like to pretend those 3-4 years never happened.
What is your interest in taking Steve Pederson back from Pitt? Please?

I’d like to see Black Swan, again.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:58 AM
funny, I was thinking this exact thing yesterday when someone mentioned Erickson to Stanford.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:59 AM
CFB fans: Muschamp and Kelly are due up within the hour on The DP Show.
January 7th, 2011 at 9:59 AM
you can’t play this game…they have both of them.
if mallett/pryor weren’t at ark/OSU, neither would sniff a BCS bowl either.
January 7th, 2011 at 10:00 AM
Chizik made the hire of a lifetime with Malzahn. Were it not for Gus, Chizik is 6-6 this year and fired or on a very hot seat next year.

i hate that asshole. i wish he’d just go away.
January 7th, 2011 at 10:02 AM
I disagree. They each have loads of talent out side of the QB position. AUB does not. AUB has the freak of all freaks at QB and a solid group of RBs…that’s it. Outside of Fairley they have dogshit on defense (especially the back 7) and their WRs are average personified. They simply have the great equalizer in Cam. He’s the difference from 13-0, and 7-6.
January 7th, 2011 at 10:03 AM
Its amusing to me that that always gets skipped over.
Yeah, that was kinda the overall larger point that I was trying to make. I know these people just went through a lot, and I’m inclined to give them a pass, but statements like that I find incredibly narcissistic.

January 7th, 2011 at 10:05 AM
Go back and look at their season. Without Cam, does AUB beat Clemson? First meeting w/ SC? LSU? Bama? Ark? UGA? Miss St? They’ve won so many games where they were tied or losing in the 4th. He’s that good. He is the difference between playing in Glendale or playing in Memphis.
January 7th, 2011 at 10:05 AM

Everybody sux in the radio biz here
January 7th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
I’m probably biased because I like Malzahn, but I honestly think if they don’t have him drawing up the plays they still lose at least a couple games this year even with Newton. having a great player is one thing, but getting him to fit into an offense as perfectly as Cam did this year takes a lot.
January 7th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
No argument here. I was really sad when he got the drive home time slot. So happy when he got bumped to WKNR2 on a terrible time slot. Rhoda/Reghi suck, but they don’t nearly approach the same level of suck as the Munch man.
January 7th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
He did write a nice letter though.

Rhoda was ok on his own. He does some great impressions of Brad Daughtery and Charlie Manuel Howeva, His pairing with Reghi is painful. Those two getting their jollies off talking about Entourage is some of the worst radio I’ve ever heard.
Greg Brinda is by far and away the best local talent on WKNR.
Rizzo is passable.

G-dammit, don’t we have a qouta on OSU fans in here?

brinda is good people…ive met him a couple times and talked to him via email during his sunday golf show.
January 7th, 2011 at 10:15 AM
Rizzo is passable.
He tries to copy Rome too much. Even the non-sports people suck here. I suppose the old Cavs arena announcer, Howie Chizik, isn’t so bad(WNIR in Akron)…..Triv is just absolutey un-listen-to-able.

Hey professor, out of curiosity, do you mind revealing where you teach? Or maybe public vs. private. Just curious as I work in higher ed in Iowa.
January 7th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
Cannot stand anyone in cleveland sports radio (aside from lecheries bently and jarod cherry). Reghi, munch, Rhoda are all unlistenable.
I do like the really big show but more for the segments (cold call dump button and the bonus round) than for the sports coverage.
PD sports are another disaster as well
