Andrew Luck Staying at Stanford, A Smart Decision and One He’s Entitled To Make
Andrew Luck challenged convention. He is forgoing NFL millions to stay for a fourth year at Stanford and complete his architectural design degree. His decision may be risky or unwise financially, but it’s also his prerogative.
We treat playing in the NFL as though it’s a duty. Luck, a puppet for our amusement, has a responsibility to us. He has elite talent. He must play professionally as soon as possible and for as long as he’s physically able. Think I’m exaggerating? Imagine the scorn he would receive if he decided to quit football and become an architect. Luck’s going to take his paycheck and mediocre city and he’s going to like it!
Luck is leaving money on the table, but how much money? The NFL probably has a rookie scale by the 2011 Draft, so Bradford dollars aren’t guaranteed. If he’s truly the “once in a generation” guy, he won’t fall like Leinart. If he blows out his knee, he probably has a cushy insurance policy. Worst-case scenario, he’s from a well-off family, high-profile, well-connected and has a legit degree from Stanford. He’ll be okay.
The transition won’t be seamless next year. Even if they lose Harbaugh, Stanford could keep and promote Greg Roman and keep most of the staff together. They must replace three senior offensive linemen. However, they have a favorable non-conference schedule – San Jose St., at Duke, Notre Dame – and only face Oregon once in the new Pac 12 alignment, at home.
Stanford will start in the Top Ten. Luck will be the overwhelming Heisman favorite. The Cardinal should have a shot for a BCS Title. They might even fill their stadium. Luck should have a fun year. You only go to college once. He has only been there two and a half years. He may not feel ready for the NFL.
Luck staying does not mean Harbaugh will, but that, and a hefty raise, would help Stanford’s case. If he’s not sold on the 49ers, Harbaugh could stay on one more year and see what NFL opportunities were there next year.
The NFL Draft also becomes a little more interesting. Mallett, Gabbert, Locker and Newton are all intriguing first-round prospects, though none are sure things. None should go number one, but any of the four could end up in the Top Ten. The big loser is Carolina. They still get a Pro Bowler, but they nearly had the chance to draft the next great quarterback or to demand a king’s ransom for him.

as a falcons fan, I’m ecstatic about the news. Wasn’t looking forward to facing him twice a year for next 15 years.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:03 PM
quality post Duffy.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:04 PM
In more important news, Taguchi is now Shoshon, etc.? Or am I getting that wrong?
January 7th, 2011 at 1:04 PM
entitled to make? Yes.
Smart? fuck no.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:05 PM
Solid post Duffy. It will be interesting to watch this play out next year.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:05 PM
Agree with you in principal Duffy. But as you say:
Luck is different than most guys that can declare early.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:05 PM
His decision may be risky or unwise financially, but it’s also his prerogative.
Architectural design can pay pretty well. Just ask Peter Keating.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:06 PM
The response to his staying at Stanford was embarrassing. I couldn’t believe people were made at him. He chose to stay in college (in Paolo Alto, BTW) for another year and have a shot at a National Title and a Heisman. Oh…and he’s going to get his degree. What an asshole.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:06 PM
I thought this year’s draft picks will be subject to whatever “Rookie Cap” is instituted, so why is everyone saying he left $50 million on the table to return??
January 7th, 2011 at 1:06 PM
Or he could go to Michigan.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:06 PM
an Architectural Design degree is not the same as an Architecture degree.

January 7th, 2011 at 1:07 PM
I heard someone on the radio say, “I respect his choice, but I question his intelligence.”
January 7th, 2011 at 1:07 PM
They would only face them once if it was the Pac 10 too.
Like you said Luck is more in the Bradford mold than Leinart, but Stanford most likely will take a couple more lumps next year and he’ll be reevaluated. I do wonder how much of this is him not wanting to play in Carolina too. But good for him for staying in school. We blast guys that leave early so let’s give Luck some credit.
Score one for Academia!

It’s not? Shit.

January 7th, 2011 at 1:08 PM
Why? He’s going to finish a degree. I think its the smartest decision he could have made. If the NFL declares a work stoppage, what’s he going to do? UFL? Much rather have a shot at the national title.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:08 PM
as a falcons fan, I’m ecstatic about the news. Wasn’t looking forward to facing him twice a year for next 15 years.
Don’t get too excited, if Carolina runs Clausen out there 16 times next year the Panthers will get another shot @ Luck next year…
January 7th, 2011 at 1:08 PM
Thought someone said yesterday that most of that OL graduates. If it does, I’d temper these expectations to a Pac-12 title and the Davey O’Brien.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:08 PM
To play the devils advocate, I think people were just perplexed because he was a consensus number 1 pick and he can always go back and finish the degree. But by returning to college, he risks health and possibly losing the number 1 pick status.

I know that’s why they were pissed/confused/whatever. I thought it was awesome.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:12 PM
Thanks, Duffy.
This post is smart, well-done and missing the misguided, at times anonymous, outrage sports media specializes in during slow news afternoons.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:12 PM
I don’t know anyone who has said Luck has a responsibility to go pro. I think most feel it would be the best career choice if he went now because staying in school isn’t worth the risk, as the reward won’t get in higher with this decision.
Now, if he plans on flaming out of the NFL in 3 years anyway, then yes, it would be wise to go back and finish that degree.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:13 PM
I wouldn’t want to play for a team that was bottom five in sacks allowed and second in QB hits allowed either.
Panthers already had David Carr for a brief spell anyway.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:13 PM
Hmm my dad is loaded and I go to school at Stanford. Should I leave to go to a Organization with an unsure future of should I stay fuck all the Asians I want and get a Prestigious degree?
January 7th, 2011 at 1:13 PM
Also, Bradford stayed, got injured, and was still the #1 pick and I think he is doing OK…
January 7th, 2011 at 1:14 PM
Just for the simple fact alone that he won’t be playing in Carolina makes this a smart move.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:15 PM
Hmm my dad is loaded and I go to school at Stanford. Should I leave to go to a Organization with an unsure future of should I stay fuck all the Asians I want and get a Prestigious degree?

Like Jamie Moyer, and Allen Iverson, and Lebron, he should just do whatever the fuck he wants.
But if his most important goals were to “become the best quarterback I possibly can” and/or “make as much money as I possibly can”, this wasn’t the best choice.

This decision is potentially just as shortsighted as the kids that leave early that have no business doing so. Pointing that out is completely reasonable.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:18 PM
I look forward to the reaction when the Bungles have the #1 pick in the 2012 Draft and Luck decides to return for his 5th year.
/he’d probably have a Stanford MBA by then, so he’ll lose out on no money

simmons’ article about brady and manning was retarded because of the golfers he chose to represent each.
brady = faldo? the fuck? brady = tiger woods.
manning = mickelson? please…manning = furyk…looks awkward but is fundamentally sound, finishes near the top almost every tournament but rarely finds himself in the winner’s circle.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:19 PM
Husker, I just meant that some of the talk about how much money he could be risking is very disingenuous.

I’d argue that whatever risks you take by potentially going to a bad team are outweighed by the benefits of playing with NFL players and coaches, yeah? Is there some awesome team waiting to draft him in 2012?
January 7th, 2011 at 1:21 PM

January 7th, 2011 at 1:22 PM
Good chance it will be the Panthers again considering the lack of high picks they have and huge holes they have on their roster. I just don’t think any QB that gets drafted top by them is set up for success in the next few years, but that actually is different than becoming a great QB.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:22 PM
Uh, they have it down low
Yes, but that’s it. Italians, mexicans, indians . . . hairy as fuck.

January 7th, 2011 at 1:24 PM
Is there some awesome team waiting to draft him in 2012?
Agree that no matter what year you come out, you are going to a pretty bad team, but…..the fact that he is staying another year in school to potentially win a major bowl, avoid a messy lockout situation, and maybe play with his coach one more year isn’t that bad of a situation.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:24 PM
John Starks gets nasty in the time machine today.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:24 PM
I’m sure all the organizations picking top 5 next year will be on very solid footing.
The Panthers would be a great place to land. Nice weather and a team that has shown in the past it wants to win. Sure beats going to Buffalo, Detroit or Cincy. The Panthers suck at the moment but what team in the history of first picks doesn’t suck?
January 7th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
Tyrus Thomas laughs at that weak-ass shit.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
No, I’m pretty sure if he was giving up the last year he could get a sixty million dollar contract that would be “not bright.”
I disagree. To each his own.
You intend to do a job. You understand the exact way the current market for your job is laid out, and how much you will earn when you enter the field. You know that if you wait a year you will be paid less (most likely significantly less) for doing that job. Giving up $30 million or whatever because college is the awesome? okay.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
Staying in school is never shortsighted.
Oh come on. This isn’t about working a construction job in lieu of earning his highschool degree. This is about being a millionaire and doing 21 credits sometime over the course of the next decade and still having that degree from Stanford. His decision comes down to thinking that the fun and football opportunities affforded him by the 1 extra year in school are worth not entering the draft for. I don’t know that he’s wrong, but going for the 1 year option may very well be shortsighted.

January 7th, 2011 at 1:28 PM
So you think there won’t be a rookie cap this year, I assume? Would I have turned down guaranteed money in the $60 million range? No. But I think it’s awesome he did. I don’t think there is a wrong choice here. The kid comes from money, so it’s not like he has to worry about paying the bills.
/again, there will be a rookie cap, so the point is moot
January 7th, 2011 at 1:28 PM
Don’t you say that. Stay here. Stay here as long as you can. For the love of God, cherish it. You have to cherish it.

/again, there will be a rookie cap, so the point is moot
No, I think there will. Which is why I have no real problem with his decision. I just think it would be objectively idiotic if there wasn’t going to be.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:30 PM
This. The kid is a legit stud. Yeah, he could get hurt, but as Bradford proved, that doesn’t mean he won’t get picked first. Another year in a pro-system and more starts will only help him. He will get a bigger deal when he’s a FA anyway.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:31 PM
also…why are we this concerned over what someone else is making?
he’ll still be a millionaire, so pardon me if im not going to waste any time arguing over whether or not he’ll accumulate MORE generational wealth while sacrificing a year of being elbow deep in cali poon and on the cover of every sports magazine for a year while not having to deal with 18 hour work days in the NFL.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:31 PM
This is not true. Almost everyone agrees the new CBA will pass before the draft or before the drafted players are signed in 2011.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:31 PM
I thought this year’s draft picks will be subject to whatever “Rookie Cap” is instituted, so why is everyone saying he left $50 million on the table to return??
Because they want to make their outrage sound justified, even though it was wrong. Also, he’ll end up signing a shorter term contract, ala the NBA guys, meaning he’ll get into FA sooner. This will get him another big contract, probably two years sooner.
Would you believe it wasn’t a bright decision if this was the last year insane contracts would be given out?
Yes, then he should have turned pro if it truly was a $50 million difference. Van Buren Boys don’t always win the Susan Ross Foundation scholarship, you know

January 7th, 2011 at 1:31 PM
Money isn’t everything, champ. It may be to those who don’t have it, but someone who comes from money like Luck does will look at it differently. So it can’t be called objectively idiotic.

I also find it curious that people think that Luck is somehow barred from getting his degree in 5 years if it comes to that. Which, if there is no rookie cap, he wouldn’t have to do anyways besides just for funzies.

This. You are only young once, you got your whole life to work. Taking summer/night classes 2 years from now as a millionaire isnt the same as sharing an apartment with your friends, getting blackout drunk, and waking up at noon.

Pretty sure that was effectively proven in an unfortunate early nineties nude scene.

January 7th, 2011 at 1:45 PM
im not kidding myself…i knew how good of a time my two and a half senior years were and i wasn’t wealthy or famous. id gladly trade a year’s worth of salary to relive one of those years.
But would you change the whole trajectory of your career? And would you feel the same at 40 (assuming you aren’t yet 40)? This isn’t a matter of being able to put a fixed dollar figure on something. He literally cannot improve upon his position to succeed in his chosen profession which could be a part of his life for 20 years or more. Choosing to risk that for 1 year of anything is at least questionable.

Maybe not from your perspective, but from Luck’s perspective, it most definitely is a good move.
A real degree from one of the best universities in the world ALONG with another year of being a big shot undergrad? Where do I sign up? The NFL will always be there, he doesn’t need the money, and if injury is a concern, there is always insurance.

probably wouldn’t be able to do it unless he was taking day classes. read this for more information.

they are saying it will probably not be. Also, the deadline to declare is the 15th, so he can always change his mind if it sounds like the CBA will not change
January 7th, 2011 at 1:55 PM
This CBA expires in March.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:56 PM
If thats true, then you are correct. However I dont believe this to be the case, I think this draft falls under the new CBA.
January 7th, 2011 at 1:57 PM
well if that’s the case Spence and he would only give up a couple million potentially then it’s not bad. I’d still come out probably but with the possibility of a lockout it’s not a bad decision.

January 7th, 2011 at 1:59 PM
They are going to change the rules about the rookie cap before this draft. SO hes not costing himself 40+ million.
Why come out if he isn’t going to play/practice til maybe August because of the potential lockout? And what QB really wants to play for a rookie HC who will be a expert on the def side of the ball?

I think it depends on the type of college you go to as well. I’m not sure it’s such a great lifelong memory if you are taking two night classes a week while working as the IHOP fry cook during the day.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Just sayin’ all experiences are not created equal.

January 7th, 2011 at 2:11 PM
How many had the option to leave after 3 years??? Flacco transferred bc he couldn’t start at Pitt, came on late his senior year. Ryan/Ben/Brady weren’t highly thought of until senior year (Brady not at all).
Basically the good Manning and Leinart are the only valid comparisons I can think of right now.
January 7th, 2011 at 2:11 PM
40-50 mill is once is a lifetime experience that only the fortunate few in this world encounter. It’s crazy to jeopardize that.
January 7th, 2011 at 2:13 PM
I guess Luck’s dad said that this year’s draft is under the new CBA. So considering there will be a rookie scale + possibility of a lockout, it is probably a good idea for him to stay.
January 7th, 2011 at 2:14 PM
The whole thing. I had a great time throughout. Am in a shitload of debt, but I enjoyed my time. Luck doesn’t have to worry about any of that and will have a guaranteed job when he graduates.
January 7th, 2011 at 2:14 PM
Big Ben actually left as a junior (did redshirt a year). Look what not fully experiencing college made him do later in life.
