Zach Randolph’s Thuggery Still Haunts Portland
Powerful column from John Canzano in the Oregonian today about a bouncer who was shot to death in Portland on New Year’s Day. The shooter? One of Zach Randolph’s old running mates from the “Hoop Family,” which is described as “Randolph’s unsavory band of friends of acquaintances.” According to Canzano, the reason Sebastian Telfair was busted with a gun a few years ago was because a “Hoop Family” member threatened him. Then, there’s this:
The basketball organization hired a private investigator in 2007, who returned with a three-inch file on his activities and the “Hoop Family.” A couple of months later, Portland traded Randolph to the Knicks for what amounted to Channing Frye and a Steve Francis contract they later bought out. Basically, flushed him. Done.
Which is why we’re stunned Randolph hasn’t gotten into any trouble in Memphis – well, there was this report from a police informant in Indianapolis – and wasn’t part of the OJ Mayo-Tony Allen fight on a team plane recently.
Our all-time favorite Randolph moment (2nd place: the time he sucker punched Ruben Patterson) might have been this one, from our interview in 2007 with Canzano:
“When ‘Sheed comes back, make sure you don’t have your back to him. He’ll sucker punch you.”
Thug or not, anyone looking out for a reporter is cool in our book.

NBA has some really really fucked up people.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:20 PM
Randolph went to HS near where I grew up and later worked. I know sports writers who have many stories about him during his days at Marion HS. One quote I remember (verbatim) was that “if Randolph made it to his 20th birthday without being killed, it’d be a miracle.”
January 6th, 2011 at 3:20 PM
Zach Randolph killed Lorenzen Wright!
January 6th, 2011 at 3:23 PM
The Pistons should go get Randolph. Or trade for Cousins.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:23 PM
Yeah…it’s just the NBA…
January 6th, 2011 at 3:24 PM
yeah, it’s really depressing sometimes when you sit back and think about some of the people we devote so much of our time cheering and supporting.
Professional athletes get a bad rap and most are outstanding members of society, but some of them are just absolutely rotten to their very core. Just awful human beings.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:24 PM
my favorite z-bo moment is when some chick woke up with him fucking her in the ass (sans consent…or kobe-style, whichever you prefer), she gets pissed and he rolls back over and goes back to sleep.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:26 PM
no, it’s not smart ass. I realize all the sports have their own john rocker or ben roethlisbergers. But since we were talking about an NBA player, that’s what I pointed out.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:27 PM
Could be said about anything/anywhere. Especially Ohio.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:27 PM
did john rocker ever commit any real crimes?
so he was a bigot…that’s not exactly thuggish.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:30 PM
I’m positive he sexually assaulted a woman at some point in his life.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:30 PM
The thuugish ruggish bone?
January 6th, 2011 at 3:30 PM
Ray Carruth. Uggy Urbina. Alfredo Simon. That dude who drop kicked the umpire.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:31 PM
Mostly the NBA and NFL. If you take A-Rod out of MLB and the Dominicans that own a machete and a farm, it’s really not that bad. Hockey players are good people. Don’t you dare slander them.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:32 PM
oh boy, here we go
January 6th, 2011 at 3:32 PM
this has been grwat for folks getting their snide on
January 6th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
they are good people…it’s the fans that need the rehabilitation.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
Having not clicked any of the links, I don’t see how it’s Randolph’s fault his friend got shot, especially since he left the area years before. I’ve had a few friends get shot, some killed, I’m not taking blame for that.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
did john rocker ever commit any real crimes?
I’m positive he sexually assaulted a woman at some point in his life.
you mean jeff pearlman?
/i know rocker assaulted his baseball pants
January 6th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
I’m rarely speaking without my tongue in cheek, Mr. Kraut.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
My fav Randolph moment was when his MTV Cribs episode was filled with gang members hangin’ at his house.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
Ahh, the good ol’ Jail Blazer days…
You have to be black to be a “thug,” right?
January 6th, 2011 at 3:35 PM
Yeah like someone who kills his best friend because he’s too cheap to buy a cab after consuming to the point of inebriation…or someone who swings a stick at someone on the ice…or teh case of Mark Hardy who sexually molested his daughter.
No bad apples there at all.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:35 PM
My suspicions have been confirmed.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:35 PM
So I remembered reading about a minor leaguer who (I think) murdered somebody a couple of years back. Was trying to Google him, found this.
WTF
January 6th, 2011 at 3:36 PM
boy, that blake griffin kid got some real potential. He just might be the next tyrus thomas
/just messing with you sc
January 6th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
Yes.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
You’d have been better off bringing of Graham James, Trey. That’s where scumbag starts with hockey.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
“thug” is the new N word
January 6th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
no.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:39 PM
Or you can have tattoos or play hockey
January 6th, 2011 at 3:40 PM
I said that jokingly.
But still, when white hockey players fight on the ice, it’s fun/they’re just gritty guys standing up for teammates or whatever. When a black NBA player throws a punch, he’s a thug who is ruining sports
/National media’d
January 6th, 2011 at 3:41 PM
only if you’re a goon that provides no value to your team or the league
January 6th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
Not a good analogy. One of part of the game, one isn’t. Pretty sure I’ve seen Mike Grier fight before and no one has accused him of being a thug.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
Tony La Russa angry Vick gets a pass. Looking forward to when this posts.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:43 PM
not true…he’s a pussy who’s afraid to throw or take a punch.
/there’s never been a good NBA fight except for the malice at the palace
January 6th, 2011 at 3:44 PM
What about when Van Gundy was being dragged by Ewing? I think it was Ewing.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:45 PM
only if you’re a goon that provides no value to your team or the league
John Scott.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:45 PM
I’m really not trying to start a race war here, but why is fighting “part of the game” in an almost all-white sport, but when a fight breaks out in the NBA, it’s some huge deal?
January 6th, 2011 at 3:46 PM
It was ‘Zo
January 6th, 2011 at 3:46 PM
Not going to disagree with you, Geez. He provides no value other than me getting to call him Murdersaurus. He’s a terrible hockey player. Just terrible.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:47 PM
Another reason for getting rid of 6 teams in the league.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:47 PM
again…when a fight breaks out in the NBA, it’s slightly more violent than a rough game of patty cake. it’s a big deal because it’s rare to see such large human beings gracefully avoid getting hit.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:47 PM
Thats perfect.. TBL hates LaRussa and loves Vick
January 6th, 2011 at 3:47 PM
Oh, and the Van Gundy/Poodle Leg Humping at the Garden was more comedic value than anything.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:47 PM
How can you have a good fight when refs, coaches and teammates are instantly on them to break it up? If the were allowed to square up and trade punches like hockey players, I’m sure there would be some interesting ones.
But I can see I’m not winning this argument with the hockey fans. Fair enough.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:48 PM
I don’t watch much hockey, but I watch the national media, and they criticize hockey players as being thugs, or at least they used to. It’s only TBL who does the equation Black + tattoos = thug. Or at least he’s the only one who does it so conspicuously
January 6th, 2011 at 3:48 PM
You people are going to rise up one day and depose him, right?
January 6th, 2011 at 3:48 PM
I’m really not trying to start a race war here, but why is fighting “part of the game” in an almost all-white sport, but when a fight breaks out in the NBA, it’s some huge deal?
Spencer’s malice in the palace reference is part of the answer, hockey games are separated from the fans by boards and glass. Don’t think race is a factor.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:49 PM
I’m really not trying to start a race war here, but why is fighting “part of the game” in an almost all-white sport, but when a fight breaks out in the NBA, it’s some huge deal?
Um, this used to happen. Somebody’s brain fell out of their skull.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:49 PM
please tell me you’re not calling me a hocky fan. i’d be crushed.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:50 PM
Fucking newspapers
January 6th, 2011 at 3:51 PM
Spencer seems like the type of guy that would enjoy the sport of puck. Probably hates it because it’s a Canadian sport and not American.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:51 PM
What’s worse? Being a hockey fan or Creed fan?
/no Michigan jokes
January 6th, 2011 at 3:51 PM
Mechanics are another issue, I don’t have specific evidence to support this, but throwing a punch with you feet planted on a basketball court would likely more do more damage than a similar punch while on skates.
Fights in hockey involve tactical use of your opponents equipment to (jersey, shoulder pads) to minimize the damage you receive.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:51 PM
Spence, whatever you do. Don’t. Look. Up.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:51 PM
You people are going to rise up one day and depose him, right?
He certainly isn’t beloved, but he’s not leaving until he feels like it.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:52 PM
not true…he’s a pussy who’s afraid to throw or take a punch.
Carmelo Anthony? Carmelo Anthony.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:52 PM
Ha ha, fine, I concede. I’d just like to see someone be able to punch LeBron in the face without a 20-game suspension, but whatevs.
So, umm, how about that Blake Griffin!?
January 6th, 2011 at 3:52 PM
Gotta make some money, CJ.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:53 PM
It’s not really ‘part of the game’ but the prescribed penalties for fighting in hockey are fairly minor compared to what you see in other sports. Due to this, you see it happen more frequently and the people who engage in it tend to be pretty good at it because they’ve had plenty of practice.
In the NBA, they throw the book at you for that stuff so you rarely see it, and when you do, the participants usually aren’t that gifted in the ‘art’ of hand-to-hand combat.
Personally, I think the staged fights we seen in hockey are a joke at hurt the league’s image.
All that said, race is not an issue and anyone who trys to say it is
January 6th, 2011 at 3:54 PM
i really don’t hate hockey. i just like yelling at SC and geez.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:55 PM

All that said, race is not an issue in the discussion of why it’s acceptable in one sport/league and frowned upon in the other.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:55 PM
It’s been argued by minds as great as that of Bill Simmons that part of th reason the NBA cracked down on fighting (which used to be winked at simiarly to the way it currently is in hockey) is because the media/fan base were turned off by the big black men fighting. I read it in a book.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:56 PM
Oh, I understand. And to normal people who don’t spend all their time on the Internet reading about all the silly opinions he has, he probably is just fine.
But since I qualify, maybe I can get those Internet Zealot guys to make him their next target. They seem effective.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:56 PM
.
Fair enough
January 6th, 2011 at 3:56 PM
Big difference – its part of the game in hockey.

I, uh… uh.

January 6th, 2011 at 3:58 PM

If I was going to attack fighting in hockey, this is where I’d start.

Well as Duffy well knows only black people live in St. Louis.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:59 PM
Hey, TK, what years were you at State? One of my best friends lived with a guy named TK.

Top 5 SC comment ever…
January 6th, 2011 at 4:00 PM
Well then maybe it’s just more of a culture thing than a race thing? When guys like Bird/Lambeer and so on used to throw punches in the ’80s, it still wasn’t accepted, but didn’t they get 1 game suspensions as opposed to the 15 game suspension Carmelo got for bitch slapping?
/Then again, maybe Stern gave him 15 games for slapping like a girl.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:02 PM
really? Id rather see two guys square off and throw and then go to the box for 5 than a huge melee like what happened in the Michigan-Michigan State game last year.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:03 PM
Don’t forget the Juice! Lotta juice at WashU at least.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:05 PM
really? Id rather see two guys square off and throw and then go to the box for 5 than a huge melee like what happened in the Michigan-Michigan State game last year.
Fetch, I don’t know the particular incident you are referring to.
How often do line brawls occur anymore? I’d wager in all the time you’ve spent following college hockey there you can count them on two hands. I can tell you the frequency has dropped of dramatically in the CHL in the last 10 years.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:08 PM
I’m talking about this
And I’d say there’s probably 1 huge one per year.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:11 PM
And I’d say there’s probably 1 huge one per year.
I’d like for these to be out of the game as well, but in my mind getting rid of the staged fights (ex. Scott v Janssen) which happen with much greater frequency is a bigger issue. Agree to disagree once again I guess.

January 6th, 2011 at 4:41 PM
Another steaming pile amongst a whole field of steaming piles written by Canzano. I especially like how he tries to blame the death of person on the Blazers organization and Zach Randolph for the first 3/4 of the column then say you can’t really blame them. But you just did John. He’s the worst type of columnist. He’s even worse on the radio.

Zach Randolph: We’re not going to change who we are just because some whore shakes her ass.
