Steven Stamkos Excels/Fails At Penalty Shots
Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning has had an up and down week taking penalty shots. A week ago today he spun and scored on Montreal’s Carey Price on a penalty shot. (Video after the jump.) Last night he was awarded a penalty shot, but didn’t look quite as fancy. Many internet-based people are throwing around the word “fail,” so you know its not ending well for Stamkos.

In all fairness, the ice at the CEC is still very shitty. I can’t wait fo the Lightning to be a first round exit this year with their hot goaltending.

First off, I am a big Stamkos fan. That said, I have to call him on stating that Omark’s move was ‘disrespectful’ and then pulling the spin-o-rama.

You guys have no idea how happy I am that Jordan Staal is back. Staal + Malkin on 2nd line = your fucked.

Trade Malkin for Rick Nash.
January 6th, 2011 at 3:59 PM
Stamkos, thought it was Stamos for a second and got excited.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:01 PM
I hope so – I’m just not convinced having Malkin with Kennedy/whomever playing the “off” defensive wings won’t be a problem in the future.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:02 PM
Ahh, a hockey post. I promise I learned my lesson from the last thread and will leave race/fighting out of this one
January 6th, 2011 at 4:03 PM
Hey now!
More like Malkin, Letestu and Goligoski for Nash
January 6th, 2011 at 4:03 PM
Hockey should contract 6 teams, then move a bunch back to Canada. Then it would be more relevant.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:03 PM
Kennedy kills me, I think Shero is trying to find a way to get rid of him during the trade deadline. Malkin has been on a tear as of late now that he is finally healthy. Plus he looks like he actually gives a shit for the first time since the 09 playoffs.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:06 PM
STFU. How bout you contract 14 teams in the NBA? Then move 2 to Asia.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:07 PM
Tough for Stamkos but shit happens. Everyone needs to be laughed at from time to time.
Here’s a pretty nice shootout-style goal (from OHL skills competition) he scored a few years back.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:08 PM
More like Malkin, Letestu and Goligoski for Nash
Malkin ($8.7M, 3 years left), Letestu ($500K, RFA this summer), Goligoski ($1.8M, RFA next summer).
Nash ($7.8M, 7 years left).
January 6th, 2011 at 4:08 PM
No fucking way Letestu will be touched. I think he has 10 goals playing in the third line. Not too bad for a rookie.

3 players per current roster = 96 players / 23 per roster = 4 teams
January 6th, 2011 at 4:09 PM
Moving teams to Asia doesn’t make sense. Neither does having hockey teams in Phoenix, Tampa, Miami, Atlanta, Nashville, and so on.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:10 PM
Hell of an idea. I think we’re going to see a couple of teams go in the next 5-10 years. Far too many teams in unsustainable situations. If it weren’t for Gary propping up his own failed expansions/relocations, this probably would have happened already.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:10 PM
gross. If we’re going to trade Malkin I don’t want a guy with the same skill set.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:11 PM
Rumor/Conspiracy Theory in Michigan right now is that Mary Anne Coleman and some other higher up suits at Michigan didn’t want Harbaugh.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:11 PM
I also don’t want to jinx it but a lot of people are saying that the Coyotes are pretty much as good as in Winnipeg for next year. But I’ve heard that before so we’ll see
January 6th, 2011 at 4:11 PM
I think I would rather have 3 very good lines instead of 1 awesome line and the rest shit.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:12 PM
BJ’s got cap space.
Having space is not the same as having the ability to use that space.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:12 PM
I was obviously not being serious with that proposal.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:14 PM
I heard this. Very curious.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:14 PM
gross. If we’re going to trade Malkin I don’t want a guy with the same skill set.
Nash >>>>> Malkin
January 6th, 2011 at 4:14 PM
Well I know you have proposed to me many trading Malkin ideas before. I am easily fooled though.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:16 PM
WHOA. Nash is a ton better than Malkin. Plus, he’s not Russian.

January 6th, 2011 at 4:19 PM
Skille is. Bolland I would say I doubt. Hawks don’t have enough depth at center to deal him. Unless the retard parade continues and Kopecky keeps lining up there. If that’s the case, I’m putting Stan Bowman in a Scorpion Death Lock.
Skille to the Leafs is the hot rumor. They seem to like taking our defective parts.

Anybody see the feature during the winter classic about hockey being played outside? They had footage of Toews from Christmas Day 1997 skating on a rink in his backyard, and he puts one in the net top shelf, and you can hear his dad say “right where mama puts the peanut butter, eh?”. Slayed me.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:21 PM
Forgot that Stamkos opened his yap about Omark.
That Omark move was effing awesome.
Rick Nash would score approximately 900 goals playing on a line with Crosby. I would do this deal if I were Pittsburgh only if I were sure Jordan Staal can produce as a second line center. Let’s not forget it’s been easy for Staal to excel in a 3rd banana role on the Pens. I know he is of the sacred Staal clan that no one can say bad things about, but he’s been a 3rd line guy, technically, so far in his career. The matchups have been in his favor, so far.

If they do, I hope they ditch those awful Coyotes uniforms and go back to being the Jets.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:24 PM
technically, so far in his career. The matchups have been in his favor, so far.
I disagree with you on this part, I don’t want to go all stat nerd on you, but if you follow some of the advanced statistics for hockey you would see that Jordan Staal is in the top 10 for toughest minutes played over the last three years.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:25 PM
I don’t think I’ve ever seen Malkin and Staal on the same line. Is this a recent thing or did Bylsma do this in the past? I’ve seen Bylsma put Malkin and Crosby together, but never Staal with either of them.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:26 PM
Without a goal in his last 19 games. A healthy scratch a little while back. He’s pretty much a 4th liner. The same can be said about Skille. I love his forechecking ability but after a 42 game sample, it’s pretty safe to say he can’t finish.
He has one move. Bull rush the net and hope to get a sloppy goal. He has no shot. It really sucks because if his hands were better, he’d be a solid 2nd-3rd liner. Right now, I’d rather have Adam Burish than Jack Skille.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:27 PM
Jordan Staal is not seeing the other team’s best checkers or best defensive pairings. No doubt the stats say what they say, but on a team that has Crosby and Malkin down the middle, you’re not putting your best guys out against the Staal line.

Tom Brady keeps his size 13 Australian footwear!
January 6th, 2011 at 4:27 PM
Oh, and Versteeg is definitely more than slightly overpaid. He’s a floater. Then again, so is Patrick Kane. He’s a $6M a year floater.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:28 PM
They played together during both their rookie seasons when Staal had 30 goals, his career high. They were planning on doing this right before the season because they were going to give Letestu the third line.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:29 PM
Let’s trying this again…
Oh, and Versteeg is definitely more than slightly overpaid. He’s a floater. Then again, so is Patrick Kane. He’s a $6M a year floater.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:29 PM
Jordan Staal is not seeing the other team’s best checkers or best defensive pairings.
No, he’s facing the other teams top offensive units and killing penalties. Regardless, I agree with your point that he will need to prove he can carry the 2nd line.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:30 PM
I’m sure this was talked about yesterday, but I left work when it was Canada 1-0….
What happened last night? Did Canada choke or did Russia actually play well? I heard about the Russians getting kicked off a plane and that they won, but that’s about all I know.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:30 PM
of course not. He’s seeing the other team’s best offensive forwards.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:31 PM
And his proof of ownership of the New York Jets.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:31 PM
I don’t buy that. Harbaugh didn’t want michigan.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:31 PM
What happened last night? Did Canada choke or did Russia actually play well?
Little from column A, little from column B.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:31 PM
Both from what I understand.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:34 PM
So I guess Russia playing well helped Canada choke… haha
January 6th, 2011 at 4:34 PM
What do you think a relatively young 20-25 goal scorer should make? I also wouldn’t consider him a floater. Effort is less of a problem than trying to do too much when he’s on the ice.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:40 PM
Well, if Tallon had used the mail system properly, he’d be making about $1.5M right now. Instead, he’s making what, like ~$3M? Your fans have even called him a floater. When he has a good center, he’s very capable. But let’s not kid ourselves, he’s not a top line forward. Can be top 6, but not top line.
Patrick Kane is a whole other story… Immense talent, opposite on the motivation side. He shows when he wants to show. Without question my number one problem with pro athletes, especially those that have a lot of talent. Effort you can control, talent you cannot.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:42 PM
Exactly my point. His role will change and he will be targeted by teams’ better defensive players rather than offensive players who may not find joy playing defensive hockey.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:43 PM
Well, if Tallon had used the mail system properly, he’d be making about $1.5M right now.
Let’s not forget the silver lining of that little mess up. trading Cam Barker, even though it remains to be seen whether Leddy can play.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:45 PM
It’s funny to read a complaint about Patrick Kane. That is who James Van Riemsdyk gets compared to here in Philly all the time (JVR being the number 2 pick, literally and figuratively, the same year Kane was drafted).
And not in a good way.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:46 PM
God fucking damn it.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:46 PM
He’s too busy being a fucking douchebag.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:48 PM
First of all, the average Leaf fan knows about as much about hockey as you do, so take what they say with a large grain of salt. ‘Floater’ is just one of those easy to throw around terms that people like to use. Versteeg is a flawed player (like the majority of the league) who probably makes about 400-500k above his market value.
I don’t think any reasonable person ever expected him to be a first line guy but there’s a severe shortage of reasonable people in this market. It’s not like I love the guy (I’d be fine if they moved him at the deadline) but he’s not a Jason Blake or a Jeff Finger or a Mike Komisarek or a….
/Shoots self
January 6th, 2011 at 4:49 PM
No, the point is the Pens ELECT to put him out against the other teams top lines due to his defensive prowess.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:50 PM
I understand that.
My point was being made in the context of a potential Malkin trade (i.e.– what would Jordan Staal’s play be like and what would his role be with no more Malkin).
January 6th, 2011 at 4:51 PM
Your hate for Komisarek sustains me, Garland.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:52 PM
Bowman did the best he could given that everyone knew the Hawks had to dump salaries. Leedy has potential as does Morin. Skille is clearly in Q’s doghouse. Bolland is an overpaid disappointment, but there are few other options at center. Stalberg is as soft as a bushel of cotton.

Not going to argue that at all. I’m the first person to justify those moves. It’s Quenneville we need to start questioning. His line combinations are set by a slot machine.
January 6th, 2011 at 4:57 PM
Agreed. Kopecky as a center is a travesty. He gets way too much important ice time. Q’s constant line shuffling worked last year, but this year has been a failure.
