Jake Long seems to be doing pretty well in the NFL, and Michigan was running zone blocking when he was there.

id counter brian’s argument with a knock on big 12 defenses, who never see smashmouth teams themselves (remember last year…texas had the 2nd best rushing defense in the country and then got bludgeoned to death against alabama). auburn sees smashmouth teams all the time in the SEC and their defense isn’t really great to begin with.

and ACC and big east teams…well, meh.

there aren’t many smashmouth teams around, but OSU’s defense has taken steps to be more competitive against spread teams and they’ve focused OL recruiting on more athletic linemen (the only smashmouth OSU OL is justin boren). then they get beat the fuck down against wisconsin, who’s offense would’ve played right into OSU’s old defense’s hands.

also note how spread offensive linemen haven’t adjusted well in the NFL.

And he’s not even right. Three of the top four yardage defenses in the country play opposite offense that are pretty much basketball on grass: TCU, Boise State, and West Virginia. It’s a bit different if you look at FEI but something like half of the top ten plays opposite a full-on spread: WVU, Missouri, Virginia Tech and Auburn are spreads and Clemson, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Nebraska use a fair number of spread concepts.

The simplicity comes in how few schemes there actually are, and how almost cliche they are in practice: the inside and outside zones and zone-read, the counter, the trap, quarterback power, and the option game (with jet sweeps sprinkled over top, though I won’t address that much here). This is the same spread playbook high school teams are running; indeed, there’s little that Meyer runs now that Northwestern and West Virginia weren’t running back then. Most differences are simply cosmetic.
