Rich Rodriguez Fired as Michigan Head Coach, For Real This Time.
All, College Football January 5th. 2011, 11:05am
It’s over. Rich Rodriguez and his coaching staff have been fired, according to The Detroit News’ Angelique Chengelis. Her source was a Michigan assistant coach. The reasons for firing Rodriguez are obvious. The real question is whether Michigan has a replacement yet and who that replacement is. Michigan man Brady Hoke? Last minute change of heart from Harbaugh? Someone who hasn’t been mentioned yet? Elaborate ruse for Lloyd Carr to retake power? A press conference is scheduled for 12:30.

I think Harbaugh and Luck are staying at Stanford. Gut feeling.

I said it in the previous post, but I would look at Kirby Smart. Not sure the AD can do that, though. I would expect Hoke to get the job because a lot of the Maize and Blue want a “Michigan Man,” whatever the hell that is.

If so, the Stanford-Oregon game will be epic. I wonder if they can move it to a legit stadium?

Saw this in the Roundup:
Eh…I’m also of the opinion that the Rose should have started 8 local time so it’s under the lights, makes it feel like more of an event.
So you go to the Rose Bowl once in 50 years, get your ass kicked by a non-AQ school and now you want to change teh start time? Fucking mouth-breathers.
January 5th, 2011 at 11:23 AM
SC – miss Fulmer? not really. he did great things for Tennessee, but it was time for him to go. I’m very happy with Dooley.
January 5th, 2011 at 11:23 AM
This is a really important hire for Michigan. Another fuck up and it could be a LONG time before they’re good again. They have nothing but spread talent on offense, so that is going to make it hard for a coach who runs something else to have early success on offense. If they want to move away from the spread, they had better hire a defensive coach who can fix that.

Have you seen the crappy ACC Title Game attendances? The Pac 10/12 cares less about football than they do. They didn’t want to be embarrassed when no one shows up for Arizona-Oregon State.
January 5th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
Michigan would want someone who will win, can rebuild defense. Doesn’t matter if he has Michigan ties or not.
Know it won’t happen, but Dungy would never get hired at Michigan. Academics/Students would go apeshit about his views/political activism on homosexuality.
January 5th, 2011 at 11:26 AM
Stanford’s non-conference schedule next year includes SJ St, Duke, and Notre Dame.
The Pac-12 should be improved and having to play the Pac-12 Champ game won’t make it any easier (though USC is banned), but still. They have more than a legit shot at a title if Luck and Harbaugh return.

Sold out this year, Jack. Shouldn’t have held the game in Tampa or Jacksonville. Now that it’s in an ACC town, it’ll draw.

Just saw this on PFT. I like the use of “We’re also told” but not as much as “I’m hearing”:
We’re also told that Harbaugh wants $7 million per year, and that he is putting out the word that he was offered $5 million annually from Michigan (John Clayton says it was $5.2 million) in the hopes of leveraging even more from an NFL team.

You have more of a shot getting a team that will travel to Charlotte in there, hell even if Wake or Georgia Tech make it, it will draw better than those Florida games. BC winning the Atlantic was an aberration, not going to be the norm.

Even though I’m familiar with the SDS and Port Huron Statement–the original, not the watered down second draft–I guess I had never equated anything about Ann Arbor with it or thought much about the city of Ann Arbor. I’ve also never been there. So there’s that.

The Macho Man > Michelin Man > Marlboro Man > Michigan Man
January 5th, 2011 at 11:37 AM
Not exactly accurate. They have a spread QB. The WR/TE position has plenty of players that can adapt to a pro-style. The OL is not some motley collection of 240 pound converted TE’s as the media would have you believe. Of the 5 RB currently on scholarship, at least 2 of them are probably more suited to pro-style than spread. The biggest question is QB. Denard showed vastly improved downfield touch this year. We don’t know how well he can read a defense yet. If he leaves, Devin Gardner is built more along the lines of Pryor than Robinson. He was listed as a dual-threat QB coming out of high school, but was praised more for his arm than his legs.
January 5th, 2011 at 11:38 AM
I’m ready for Michigan to have a decent coach, win 9 games a year, win/lose the Capital One Bowl so we can stop talking about them again.
January 5th, 2011 at 11:38 AM
VPISU’s been in that game before. Only two teams have won that division (Coastal) since divisional alignment.
It’s not like they travel that much better than Clemson.
January 5th, 2011 at 11:38 AM
Yes, it blows donkeys, we all know that. BUT putting the game in Charlotte, where fans will travel to, in the middle of ACC country will help those attendance numbers more than those horror shows in Florida. THat’s all I’m saying, why won’t you just concede the point of fact.

Not saying that transitioning to a pro-style would be smooth. I would much prefer either a spread head coach or a head coach that hires a spread OC. Just pointing out that the idea that Michigan is fielding an offense of midgets who can only run the spread is wrong. Believe they had the 3rd or 4th largest OL in the conference, and that is was also one of the younger lines.

One of the best sporting events I’ve been to. I don’t know if I mentioned it yet, but I sat right behind where Emrick and Edzo were calling the game. Me, being the drunk that I am, kept turing around screaming “you da man doc.” He eventually noticed me and gave the thumbs up. Highlight of the night.
January 5th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
Did you tell Edzo to fuck himself and learn how to coach a team with both Mario and Sid on it?
January 5th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
Payaso: I am so GD tired of the “Llyod Carr left the cupboard bare” argument for Rich Rodriguez. Lets look at a few of Lloyd’s recruits that left because of Rich Rod: 1. Sam McGuffie 2. Justin Boren 3. Ryan Mallett and 4. Tony Clemons. Thats just a few. now lets look at players that Carr recruited and were at Michigan WITH Rich Rod:
1. Mesko
2. Junior Hemingway
3. Odoms
4. Brandon Minor
5. Brandon Graham
4. Morgan Trent
I am not saying that Lloyd Carr was a recruiting juggernaut- but I refuse to accept the people trash talking a man who had more integrity (in my opinion) in his pinky finger than half the other coaches in the NCAA today. Also, making excuses for losing is a waste of time. Our defense is pathetic, our kicking is abominable, and there is NO excuse for not recruiting for those positions.
