Michigan To Conduct “National Search” For New Head Coach. Who are the Candidates?
Michigan has not hired a head coach, and will conduct a “national search” for a new one. Neither cost nor Michigan past will be the decisive factor. Athletic director Dave Brandon will focus on rebuilding the defense. “There’s a thought of getting a defensive-minded everything. I want the ball boys to be defensive minded,” Brandon said.
Brandon addressed the Harbaugh speculation as directly as he could. He admitted to friendly contact with Harbaugh and stated hsi belief Harbaugh was “heading to the NFL.” He denied there was “a contract” but was vague on the details between the Ohio State game and now. Reading between the lines, the report that some form of understanding between Harbaugh and Michigan broke down last weekend seems plausible.
He and others discredited the ludicrous “Michigan Man” concept. Michigan has a winning tradition. The next coach needs to respect, to understand and to uphold that tradition, not necessarily to have been a part of it in the past. Basically, the next coach needs to win. Rich Rodriguez did not win. He did not win against the benchmark programs He met neither the expectations of fans nor those “Michigan athletic directors.” That’s why he was fired.
The decision won’t be hasty. Brandon will emphasize Michigan’s long-term future over expediency and the integrity of the current recruiting class. That’s for the best, if it leads to the right decision. Brandon’s words are comforting, but without Harbaugh his play here is risky. The potential setback from hiring another underwhelming coach is terrifying. Brandon is a smart guy. He has also backed himself into a corner.
Extending the search beyond Michigan alumni/former coaches hurts Brady Hoke’s chances. I like other candidates, but I still maintain perceptions of him are affected by his resemblance to Mike Golic and Jeff Garlin. He’s a competent football coach. He brought a decrepit San Diego State program to nine wins in two years. There are, however, legitimate concerns about his ability to recruit and to do more than stabilize the situation. If he wasn’t a former Michigan assistant, would he be a candidate?
Michigan may be a top-ten job, maybe not, but Brandon’s stated willingness to pay for value will increase their changes to land a top-caliber head coach. Michigan Men Hoke and Miles are the natural names to pop out. Though, besides Harbaugh, there seems to be no obvious choice.
Here are a few possible targets.
Gary Patterson: He’s the best defensive coach in the country. Michigan could more than double his $1.6 million salary. He’s coming off an undefeated season and a Rose Bowl win over Wisconsin. He has maxed out what he can do at TCU, six 11-win seasons since 2003 and three consecutive top ten finishes. He turned down a $2 million offer from Minnesota. Would he turn down a $4 million one from Michigan?
Chris Petersen: He has a 61-5 record and two top-five finishes since taking over Boise State in 2006. He developed the Broncos into one of the country’s top teams without the requisite talent. He may be content taking another run with his current Boise State team, but the Broncos catapulting down the polls after the missed field goal showed how razor thin his margin for error is. Michigan could triple his salary. Top-level college jobs don’t come open every year. It may not be for him, but an inquiry may be made.
Mike Stoops: He is a Big Ten guy. He’s from Ohio. He played and was an assistant at Iowa. He won a national title as an assistant with his brother at Oklahoma. He built Arizona from nothing into a consistently competitive team. He seems to have hit Arizona’s ceiling. Michigan could triple his salary. But, do you really want the face of your school being a guy who looks as though he’s about to have a brain aneurysm every few minutes on the sideline?
Jon Gruden: He’s a Midwest guy. His personality would fit at Michigan. He could recruit. The issue would be his staying power. Michigan needs someone to stay and rebuild, not a coach whose agent publicizes him as a candidate for every NFL job.
Kirby Smart: Smart is one of the best defensive coordinator’s in the country. Clearly, he has a handle on how to shut down Michigan State. Smart just received a $100,000 raise to keep him at Alabama. But; he probably would be willing to leave for a head coaching gig. He’s a Saban protégé. He’s a strong recruiter. Smart only 35 and short on experience, but the experience he does have is really, really impressive.
If I had a gun to my head? They pick Miles. He’s a known commodity. He’s malleable offensively. He can recruit an athletic defense. Brandon saves face. According to his contract, the Michigan buyout clause is $1.25 million, which would be affordable. U of M saved more than that not firing Rodriguez before the bowl game. It’s a move Michigan could make easily if he is on board. Lloyd Carr’s dislike of him would be less of a problem.
Hoke is the fall back. I think they would make a move for Patterson, but I’m not sure he would be interested. Of course, the door stays open for Harbaugh throughout the process, should he change his mind.

I, uh, thought we discredited that concept earlier. You know, here:

It’s not irrelevant. The natural inclination is to look to coaches with some affiliation with the program at Michigan or anywhere. There just isn’t a clamoring for a “Michigan Man” or a necessity to hire one. What’s the deal?

Given his experience with 2nd rate talent, I would have to think that guy would kill at Meechigan

Patterson seems to like being at TCU. I agree that he’s close to topping out there, but he hasn’t hit the ceiling yet. I have no idea what TCU’s replacements for Dalton, Kerley, et al look like (or if they exist), but Patterson is a good recruiter in Texas so I am willing to bet he’s still got quite a bit of talent stowed away to keep TCU good for awhile.

This post should end well.
Knowing that Harbaugh is out, I first call Meyer and Kelly. Then when they say no, go to Mullen. Then Patterson and peterson. Then Pat Fitzgerald. Then settle for Brady Hoke.
Les Miles would not be on my list.
January 5th, 2011 at 5:45 PM
onto the actual post:
derp derp will not be a candidate
won’t even get an interview
Not gonna happen, no way in hell.

Les Miles would not be on my list.
I was just thinking about how amusing it is that Les has damaged his own stock a bit since the last time the Michigan job was open and yet there’s still a chance he might fall ass backwards into the job after missing out/declining back when he was a much hotter commodity.
January 5th, 2011 at 5:46 PM
A thousand times yes! It’s time for Wayne to return to glory.
January 5th, 2011 at 5:48 PM
I don’t know. Les is one of the highest paid coaches in the country and has a provision in his contract that will keep it that way.
I don’t think Patterson or Petersen jump, nor am I convinced Michigan wants those guys. I think Michigan goes NFL type on this.
I wouldn’t be shocked if they try and snatch Ferentz. Petrino would have been ideal, but his buyout is like 7 mil.
January 5th, 2011 at 5:49 PM
Ouch!! My hip is spaming!!
January 5th, 2011 at 5:51 PM
I’m not sure what the vegas odds are on the coaching search, but if I was betting on it, I would place a heavy bet on Hoke.
Also with NSD in a month, the coach has to be hired in about a week, if not Michigan will have an 8 man class like California Raisin Won’t Release Kid From Scholarship U.
January 5th, 2011 at 5:51 PM
Tai Streets and Mercury Hayes are the best Michigan football names ever.

Peterson should really look at moving on considering his team will be decimated by graduation this year. Dalton has been a luxury the past 3 years and a bad unproven QB could prove challenging. If he doesn’t move this year, I don’t see him moving on in the near future.
Petersen’s team remains intact another year and I think he really wants to leave BSU on a high note if he does leave. I give him one more year and then he moves on to a bigger program.

USA takes bronze.

Even if his buyout was $0, there is no way in hell Petrino would ever even get an interview to coach at Michigan.

Matt Millen.

I think I would rather take my chances with Hoke than go with Mike Stoops.

Did you mean Patterson in the first paragraph? Dalton was not all that great of a quarterback. He was made to look better by having a great offensive line and good receivers. But he is not a fantastic decision maker. So losing Dalton stings for his experience, but I can’t imagine the talent drop off from him to his successor, whoever it may be, will be all that large.

At first I thought this was CRM. After reading the 1st sentence I am sickened to know I was tricked into thinking it was him. This was neither funny nor fun to read.

Yeah, I meant Patterson. I think you underestimate Dalton a bit. I don’t think he’s that great, but for a run-pass guy, he’s pretty solid. And you just don’t replace 4-year starters at QB that easily.
You also have a lot more recruiting competition in Texas now with Houston, Texas Tech, SMU, Baylor and Texas A&M having much better recruiters than they did a few years ago.
January 5th, 2011 at 6:03 PM
I don’t give a fuck who they choose, just as long as they do it tonight. I’m sick of a Michigan post every other post.

True. And my previous statements are made in complete ignorance of TCU’s depth chart and recruiting this year. But success attracts quality and Patterson has had a ton of success at TCU.
You’re right, I do not think highly of Dalton. I think his teammates made him look better than he is. But he was a good fit for TCU’s system and that’s usually all you need. Even with increased competition in recruiting, I would find it difficult to believe that Patterson hasn’t dug up someone with at least Dalton’s talent.
But you are right, he is losing a lot of experience with this senior class.

Didn’t Alabama go on the vaunted “national search” when they hired Mike Price?
January 5th, 2011 at 6:06 PM
It should be noted that those receivers and the O-line are gone after this year. I don’t think history is kind on teams breaking-in a new O-line and QB the same the season.
I’m not saying TCU will be horrible–they won’t be. I’m just saying if there was a reason for Patterson to leave TCU, this season would be it.
January 5th, 2011 at 6:07 PM
This Michigan post killed everyone’s Stephen Douglaboners.
/It’s not as easy as I heard to put a boner into CRM

I think Casey Pachall(?) was a 4-star guy and has a similar skill-set to Dalton. I know he’s thought highly of, but it’s going to take a season or two. I’m sure TCU will be back on top the year after next if Patterson sticks around.

Having gone undefeated, won the Rose Bowl, and maintained a top 5 spot in the rankings all season, there’s a chance they start the year at #3 again next year. It could well be a down year because of the experience being lost. But Patterson, remember, is a defensive minded coach. While the offense may struggle, I do not believe he is losing a lot of his D and, depending on their schedule next year (which admittedly I have not looked at) he could be in a good position to break in a new offense.
There’s something about him though. I just can’t see him leaving Fort Worth unless it was for a major job in this neck of the words (like Texas, for example).
January 5th, 2011 at 6:13 PM
The “Michigan Men” don’t even want to go and be Michigan men at Michigan. Kick in the balls for Michigan.

January 5th, 2011 at 6:15 PM
Bobby Petrino is wicked pissed his name wasnt included. Glaring omission.
January 5th, 2011 at 6:16 PM
If you thought the boosters were divided over Rodriguez, see what happens if they bring in Miles. A lot of those guys remember that it was him fucking Moeller’s wife that cost them a very good coach.
Hoke has less of a resume than Rodriguez did, in even easier conferences.
Patterson has an open door to BCS/mNCG games once inside an AQ conference.
Just don’t think Peterson leaves BSU. Too much pressure at Michigan to excel immediately. Also, look at what has happened to the other coaches who have stepped up from there.
Charlie Strong is interesting, but can he recruit when he doesn’t get to sign 5 classes for every 4 years like he does in the SEC?
As I said earlier, I really hope they bring in someone who either runs the spread, or a defensive coach who will hire an OC that runs the spread.

The “rumor” is that the night Moeller got trashed and flipped out was the night he found out about the afair. Bo was on vacation and couldn’t get back in time to save him. Moeller had signed the papers removing him from the job before Bo’s flight got in.
January 5th, 2011 at 6:29 PM
Sorry, also forgot about the negative recruiting Miles did against Lloyd that just pissed off Bo and the department ever more. According to multiple recruits and high school coaches, Miles was telling kids that he had heard Lloyd had Parkinsons and wouldn’t be around much longer.
So, unless Brandon has done a complete housecleaning of everyone at all associated with the department who knew about that, Miles isn’t walking through that door. And thank God for that.
January 5th, 2011 at 6:37 PM
I am so fucking sick of this story. I hope all the terrorists living in Michigan band together & blow the fucking school up

Miles is the only way to go for them. He has to be desperate to go there. Winning 10 games at LSU is considered a failure to the fans there.
