Ridiculous Excessive Celebration Call Costs Kansas State Pinstripe Bowl [Video]
Kansas State’s Adrian Hillburn scored a touchdown to bring the Wildcats within two. He salutes to the crowd and gets flagged for excessive celebration. The personal foul yardage gets tacked onto the two-point conversion attempt. Kansas State doesn’t convert. Syracuse wins 36-34. The excessive celebration rule should be reformed and objectified. It should acknowledge that human beings will react spontaneously in dramatic situations. It should distinguish between reasonable, benign celebrating and taunting. The standard should be recognized, transparent and universal. This was absurd.

bahahahahaha
December 30th, 2010 at 7:59 PM
The way the NCAA calls things to protect poor innocent boys from feeling bad about themselves, that’s a flag. Just ask Jake Locker. Maybe in exchange for getting rid of the stupid rule they could simply supply orange slices and Capri Sun for everyone instead.
December 30th, 2010 at 8:07 PM
Take down the scoreboard while you’re at it
December 30th, 2010 at 8:08 PM
NCAA is ruining football with all these stupid calls. Earlier on in this same game a shoulder to shoulder contact got flagged and they called it a “high hit”. WTF is that?
December 30th, 2010 at 8:08 PM
He was just shading his eyes and looking into the crowd, when his tricep cramped up and forced the rapid extension.
December 30th, 2010 at 8:08 PM
That’s a harsher penalty than the tOSU players got.
December 30th, 2010 at 8:10 PM
I figured he was saluting an NYC policeman or fire fighter and forgot that the NCAA was pro-terrorist.
December 30th, 2010 at 8:11 PM
As an NCAA athlete, other than the Yankees, there really may not being anything in life I loathe more than the NCAA. They’re a fucking joke, just like this rule.
The point of it all is to make money, promote participation, and entertain, is it not? I’m entertained as hell by celebrations. If you don’t like them, don’t let them score. Boom. Problem solved.
Plus, even by the rule, that was weak as hell.
December 30th, 2010 at 8:11 PM
That was fucked up. I’m pouring one out in respect for my KSU fans. Shit. A lot of you spent a lot of money to get to NY to watch the game. Geating beat is one thing. Getting fucked in the urethra is another. Piss on a homeless person tonight.
December 30th, 2010 at 8:12 PM
speaking of, ppl have been complaining how these players don’t even get a dime from their own jersey sales. They try to sell it themselves and turns out that is against the NCAA. lmfao, the NCAA is too much
December 30th, 2010 at 8:13 PM
I’m pouring one out in respect for my KSU fans
Um, that fans should be friends. I don’t think I have any fans, much less KSU folks.
December 30th, 2010 at 8:13 PM
Shameful. Fuck refs.
I don’t say it often, but nice post Duffy.
December 30th, 2010 at 8:15 PM
Yeah, Team Duffy. He’s paying attention to these meaningless bowl games.
December 30th, 2010 at 8:20 PM
has TJ Yates completed one 3rd pass yet? lol
December 30th, 2010 at 8:20 PM
My question is…don’t a lot of the players celebrate more than this on regular plays like tackles and broken up passes? I thought I saw a lot worse than this throughout this game alone and none of those players got penalized.
December 30th, 2010 at 8:23 PM
How did that cost them the game? Plenty of blame to go around.
December 30th, 2010 at 8:26 PM
nice work, duffy.
one of the worst calls ive seen this season
December 30th, 2010 at 8:26 PM
C’mon bulldog.
December 30th, 2010 at 8:27 PM
boom!
December 30th, 2010 at 8:28 PM
Plenty. You’re absolutely right. But something that had NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING GOING ON IN TERMS OF THE FIELD OF PLAY got called in the waning seconds by the ref. I don’t care what the rule says, the ref has to know in that situation to keep the goddamned flag in his pocket. He just influenced the outcome of the game.
December 30th, 2010 at 8:33 PM
That was a pretty lame call.
hey JHS: you’re not following me anymore on twitter. I binge tweet too much for you? lol
December 30th, 2010 at 8:41 PM
That call was total BS, but I had Syracuse moneyline so…..w00t
December 30th, 2010 at 8:50 PM

Yep. Relish in it. For every time something lucky happens to you gambling, you’ve been fucked three times. No shame for you. Enjoy your evening with pride.
December 30th, 2010 at 8:50 PM
Jpq – I’m still following you – I was suspended from
Twitter last week that may be the cause of the problem

hit a dry spell until earlier, Texans. Desperate times call for desperate measures
December 30th, 2010 at 9:00 PM
Just getting home – after seeing the score on my phone I figured they just didn’t convert a normal 2 point attempt. Now I’m pissed – had KSU straight up.
/also pissed SMU laid an absolute fucking egg in a home game
//need to bounce back with the 2 games tonight to break even for the day.
December 30th, 2010 at 9:10 PM
Umm, just heard “Call that piece of fucking shit” pretty loud and clear on my tv after that fumble.
December 30th, 2010 at 9:19 PM
turco sucks
/drunk’d
December 30th, 2010 at 9:22 PM
Knicks are going to come back and make this a 3 point game with like 2 minutes left and are going to girl on prom night themselves, I feel it.
December 30th, 2010 at 9:23 PM
So, Stanford up 17-4 on UConn women…I’ll be a sucker for watching this anytime UConn women are down.
December 30th, 2010 at 9:31 PM
I really hate this guy’s branding for UNC. I hope they lose because of a mistake he makes
December 30th, 2010 at 9:34 PM
I think Stanford has won something like 70 games in a row in games that they haven’t played against UConn or something like that. Something weird.
December 30th, 2010 at 9:34 PM
Here’s that gotta call that piece of fucking shit vid. Dude’s angry.
December 30th, 2010 at 9:35 PM
Well maybe not 70 but something absurd like that.
December 30th, 2010 at 9:35 PM
Jim Joyce thinks these refs really “kicked the shit out of it.”
December 30th, 2010 at 9:44 PM
TIME FOR A SOBER RANT:
I’m beyond tired of people bitching and ready to incite an armed riot over this rule. Is it a bad rule? Maybe. But rather than blaming the officials for doing their job, how about blaming coaches for not teaching their players that doing stupid shit like this will cost the team severely?
The mechanics and nuances of holding and interference rules are often tinkered with. Yet if a player doesn’t adjust, a coach gets reamed out for not coaching a player up to adjust to the rule changes, not the officials (or worse, the pinata known as the NCAA).
Why should the celebration rule be any different? Why not blame Bill Snyder for not coaching his kids up?
Or how about this novel concept: How about pointing the finger at the root cause of the penalty, the player?
Yeah, maybe the rule is bad. But flat out ignoring the rule or not educating players about said rule is worse.
December 30th, 2010 at 9:45 PM
Stopped reading here.
December 30th, 2010 at 9:48 PM
Why should the celebration rule be any different? Why not blame Bill Snyder for not coaching his kids up?
I hear you, Jimmy. I’m usually the first one to say, “Coach needs to be telling his players not to act like fools.” But if the salute is what got the kid penalized, I gotta think the refs acted impetuously.
December 30th, 2010 at 9:51 PM
OT:
Okay, so I’m four episodes into Season 2 of Dexter. And without having to spoil anything for me, can somebody answer me this…(My storyteller sense is tingling)
The British chick is bad news, right? And I don’t mind “stealing wind chimes” bad news. I mean…BAD NEWS.
December 30th, 2010 at 9:52 PM
Listen to the audio. The officials seemed to have interpreted the rule literally.
How about a novel concept: Coach up the players to run to the bench to celebrate, thereby avoiding a penalty? Problem solved.
Eh, but that doesn’t generate pageviews from the aftermath of a nondescript bowl late on a Thursday night just prior to New Year’s Eve. :^/
December 30th, 2010 at 9:56 PM
The British chick is bad news, right? And I don’t mind “stealing wind chimes” bad news. I mean…BAD NEWS.
Bad news, heldover, & batshit crazy. The kind you want to say DIAF to
December 30th, 2010 at 9:59 PM
UConn down 34-30 at the half.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:02 PM
How about a novel concept: Coach up the players to run to the bench to celebrate, thereby avoiding a penalty? Problem solved.
Again, I get you. I once attended the Joe Montana School of “Act Like You’ve Been There Before.” At the end of the day, your argument is correct.
But the rule is asinine. It’s not “bad” and there are no “maybes” about it. It’s asinine. Hey, nobody likes taunting, but this kid didn’t appear to be taunting. He scored, got jacked up and excited about putting his team in a position to tie, and saluted. He didn’t dunk the ball over the uprights, he didn’t sing the score to the HMS Pinafore. He saluted.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:03 PM
Bad news, heldover, & batshit crazy. The kind you want to say DIAF to
Good, I’ve still got the touch. Thanks, Bl33d.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:19 PM
If they rule the catch incomplete, can they at least tack on yards for the bullshit that was that hit?
December 30th, 2010 at 10:20 PM
Well, I think they would have but where’s the late hit there? UNC should be kicking from 15 yds closer.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:21 PM
WOW. UNC FAIL.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:21 PM
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
December 30th, 2010 at 10:22 PM
UNC mismanaged the fuck out of that one. The QB should’ve just spiked the fucking ball with too many men on the field and accepted the penalty.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:22 PM
What the FUCK? Now they’re reviewing it!
/please please please
//has UNC in a pick’em
December 30th, 2010 at 10:23 PM
I think he did
As for the late hit – Number 49 from UNC clearly pushed the UT defender onto him.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:23 PM
This is a master class in trying to lose a game in the last minute
December 30th, 2010 at 10:25 PM
I can’t believe they got a review out of this.
And it’s good.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:25 PM
What is it with Tennessee and these clock management fiasco games?
December 30th, 2010 at 10:26 PM
Wow. That UNC quarterback deserves a car for snapping that ball when he did. Maybe a dufflebag full of cash…

December 30th, 2010 at 10:27 PM
Ladies and gentlemen – this is Big Ten officiating at its finest
/to be fair the coaching and play has made them look even worse
December 30th, 2010 at 10:28 PM
Earlier in the game I believe they said they were brothers
December 30th, 2010 at 10:28 PM
I think the officiating is fine. The refs are human. It’s hard to keep focused when your jaw is on the ground from the terrible coaching
December 30th, 2010 at 10:29 PM
A team that gets 41% of its roster suspended is a sign of sheer stupidity and Derek Dooley has actually made Tennessee a like-able bunch, good coach.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:30 PM
The flag carries over into OT? I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:30 PM
Well, thank God the game isn’t being decided on a coin toss….
December 30th, 2010 at 10:31 PM
Well, I hear their shower discipline has improved greatly, at leas,t deeks

December 30th, 2010 at 10:33 PM
Just when I thought NC were the retards, Tennessee gets these genius penalties, hahahahahahahahahahahaha
December 30th, 2010 at 10:35 PM
So, if TEN would have had the ball first in OT, would have they started from the 40?
December 30th, 2010 at 10:35 PM
I think so
December 30th, 2010 at 10:35 PM
Damned good thing these games mean nothing, and are just lousy exhibitions. Right?
December 30th, 2010 at 10:36 PM
What a fucking catch.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:36 PM
Wow. Nice catch not-Witten
December 30th, 2010 at 10:38 PM
C’mon NC – I need to win 1 game today
My NEB -14 isn’t off to a good start.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:38 PM
Usually, unless its a BCS bowl I’d agree with you but these two sorry teams need this win bad
December 30th, 2010 at 10:38 PM
Washington looks cool in the black jersery & pants
December 30th, 2010 at 10:39 PM
Finally the bowl games have been watchable.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:39 PM
Tyler Bray has saluted the crowd on multiple occasions, and made gestures toward the NC bench after his last 2 TDs. No flags.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:39 PM
Sarcasm, dude
December 30th, 2010 at 10:40 PM
Damned good thing these games mean nothing, and are just lousy exhibitions. Right?
Hey, when some crazy shit is happening, it doesn’t matter who’s playing or what their rank is…people are interested.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:40 PM
men, how is everyone already watching the Nebraska game?
December 30th, 2010 at 10:41 PM
Sweet – just need a FG now.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:42 PM
It’s on ESPN3 (which I don’t have access to) but I just saw the highlight of the TD
December 30th, 2010 at 10:42 PM
ESPNU has it I believe. I have the Gamecast up while I’m watching the UT/NC finally.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:43 PM
It is on ESPNU and on ESPN3
December 30th, 2010 at 10:43 PM
Just checked – they have it on the U
December 30th, 2010 at 10:44 PM
That was supposed to be finale, not finally
December 30th, 2010 at 10:44 PM
Is Bray crying on the sideline?
December 30th, 2010 at 10:45 PM
Tyler Bray has saluted the crowd on multiple occasions, and made gestures toward the NC bench after his last 2 TDs. No flags.
Asinine behavior.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:45 PM
SWEET! My wallet thanks you.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:45 PM
Absolutely he is – Big Baby
December 30th, 2010 at 10:45 PM
UT deserves the loss for that helmet-to-helmet shit in the 4th qtr and for that guy in the helmet and glasses that ESPN just showed in the crowd
December 30th, 2010 at 10:46 PM
Is Bray crying on the sideline?
Hey, I feel for the kid. Somebody needs to pick him up and get him into the locker room and talk him off the ledge. He’ll have his day. He’ll get his cheerleaders in time.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:47 PM
Freshman kid who just threw the INT to lose the game? I normally would make fun of someone crying on the field too, but not this one.
December 30th, 2010 at 10:48 PM
He’ll get his cheerleaders in time.
I thought he got them during his recruitment?
December 30th, 2010 at 10:52 PM
I thought he got them during his recruitment?
Nah, they don’t give you cheerleaders during your recruitment. They get you all revved up to go to that school and chase them down later.

Did that flag allow Syracuse to score 36 points? 1 play or call never ever costs any team a game. Silly to even suggest it.
