Who’s Ready for Low BCS Bowl Ratings?
BCS Ratings: “In ESPN’s own ongoing, scientific polling of the U.S. population’s favorite college football teams, only two BCS teams — top-ranked Ohio State and 10th-ranked Wisconsin — are among America’s 10 favorite teams. Oregon, in the title game, is No. 17. Which sure beats its opponent Auburn, which ranks 38th. Orange Bowl-bound Connecticut, unranked in BCS standings, stands 51st among Americans. And in TCU, the Rose Bowl gets a team ranked 65th in popularity — only 0.2% of Americans call it their favorite.” Another reason not to be surprised the Sugar Bowl lobbied Ohio State not to suspend five starters. Contract the BCS!
December 29th, 2010 at 4:32 PM
Those stats blow. Fact: SEC and Big Ten football = Ratings…”America’s favorites” aside.
December 29th, 2010 at 4:32 PM
What are we supposed to do with this information?
December 29th, 2010 at 4:34 PM
So who’s the most favorite team?
Talk about burying the lede.
December 29th, 2010 at 4:37 PM
I’m a little surprised Connecticut ranked even that high.
/no snarko
December 29th, 2010 at 4:38 PM
so if Auburn-Oregon played in the finals of a playoff and the ratings sucked, what would you say?
December 29th, 2010 at 4:38 PM
The teams in the BCS games would be awfully similar to the teams in a playoff bracket.
December 29th, 2010 at 4:40 PM
I just want to watch football. I don’t care.
December 29th, 2010 at 4:40 PM
Easily the dumbest rationale I have heard against the BCS so far. Let’s put some undeserving teams in the hunt for a title or a BCS game because they’ll get people to watch! Equality!
December 29th, 2010 at 4:40 PM
I know I don’t post much so I really have no right to complain, but every post hinting or implying that we need to switch to a playoff is disappointing.
December 29th, 2010 at 4:41 PM
So are these posts assuming that the Sugar Bowl lobbying for Ohio State is a bad/surprising thing?
Say what? What happens if we have a playoff and the playoff loving crowd’s wet dream occurs and we get Boise vs. TCU in the title game? Would that mean, based on this article, that nobody gives a shit and nobody will watch and therefore it would be a vote to return to the BCS?
December 29th, 2010 at 4:42 PM
Arizona +4.5
Illinois -1.5
December 29th, 2010 at 4:42 PM
I’ve been fucking saying on here for two years that people only care about big programs, but the BCS playoff honks on here are too stupid to listen to rational thought and common sense
December 29th, 2010 at 4:43 PM
Arizona better be able to score…because OK State is putting up 40+
December 29th, 2010 at 4:44 PM
Why would you bring that here, to this place??
December 29th, 2010 at 4:45 PM
Over any significant period of time the BCS is going to have more popular teams involved than a playoff would, I would think. So this probably shouldn’t be added to the narrative.
December 29th, 2010 at 4:47 PM
The whole idea is absurd…Listen the WORST rated BCS game last year, Iowa vs. Georgia Tech, was still a top 20 program for the week.
Arguments like this are stupid. Especially to use the word “damning”
Fact: The Orange Bowl and Fiesta Bowl ratings will blow.
Fact: The Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl will both be big draws.
Fact: So will the title game…
Fact: So will a handful of other bowl games…
December 29th, 2010 at 4:48 PM
Contract TCU?
December 29th, 2010 at 4:48 PM
There’s not gonna be a protest, there’s not gonna be a protest.
December 29th, 2010 at 4:49 PM

agreed. in a perverse way, low ratings should prove that the BCS is fair. the convential wisdom is that teams that travel well get the benefit of the doubt. so if unpopular schools are in the BCS, the politics has been taken out of the system.
December 29th, 2010 at 4:55 PM
and people wonder why the TV networks don’t want to see a playoff game of, for example, Central Florida vs. Oregon.
anti-bcs crowd: but… but… but… people will watch! it means something!
TV suits: eyeballs = dollars. money means something youngun’

Per Stewie Mandels mandatory reading mailbag:
I’ve been reading a lot of doom-and-gloom bowl-attendance tweets and articles the past couple of weeks, enough that I was going to start reporting a story about this trend. Then I did a little research and found out, much to my surprise, that bowl attendance is in fact up this year. Six of the 11 games through Tuesday had higher attendance this year than last, with a cumulative increase of 4.1 percent. Looking ahead to the major bowls, increases and/or sellouts are expected at the Rose, Sugar, Capital One, Outback, Cotton, Gator, Chick-fil-A and Sun bowls. When all is said and done, my guess is cumulative attendance (or average per game, if you take away the extra bowl) will exceed that of the past two years. With the economy still suffering, that’s no small feat.

In a playoff it would be completely possible (and likely) to have, say, both Alabama and Florida in the playoff. Or Ohio State and Michigan (well…). Or any other combination of well-known, popular schools from the same conference who both happen to do really well in a given season. So trying to use this information to discredit the idea of a playoff because there may also be some less-popular teams participating is, well, wrong. Especially if we had the (OMFG!!) 16-team playoff. I’m sure the playoff would lack for attention because, e.g., Alabama and Florida both are in it along with Ohio State, USC, Miami, and Notre Dame. You think a playoff is going to hurt when there’s the potential for many possible matchups of big-time schools?
Oh, and the games would actually, you know, mean something besides “you win the Fiesta Bowl, congrats Oklahoma” so casual fans are more likely to be pulled in because, wow, now Oklahoma gets to play Alabama in the next round.
December 29th, 2010 at 5:02 PM
A lot of these bowl games don’t take into account travel factors. Just think that, instead of conference tie ins, or in addition to conference tie ins, that bowls had geographic tie ins, I think there would be consistent sellouts.

Gary Patterson thinks this is bullshit.
December 29th, 2010 at 5:05 PM
Get out of here with your facts, Coop.
December 29th, 2010 at 5:06 PM
By the way, I did my part for bowl ticket sales this year, bought 12 for the Chick-Fil-A.
December 29th, 2010 at 5:07 PM
While sifting through some photos on the ole Facebook, I ran across this one of a friend of mine… it had me wondering… is that, Spencer? If it is, why did he shave the stache for the Iowa trip?
December 29th, 2010 at 5:07 PM
For a blog so generally anti-BCS, this post seems to favor the current system a whole hell of a lot.
December 29th, 2010 at 5:08 PM
Arizona +4.5
Wow. I’m way on the other side, but I was wrong about Mizzou last night. Fucking Missouri. Always shitting the bed.
December 29th, 2010 at 5:09 PM
I think he touches on those points. Look, I agree the system isnt perfect, but there are a lot of different stakeholders that all have different demands and priorities. It does a pretty good job of making everyone kind of happy. And I get to watch inter-conference football for the next 10 days.
December 29th, 2010 at 5:10 PM
How many teams are in your playoff? 64?
December 29th, 2010 at 5:10 PM
Speaking of, cheapest AU/Oregon tix are now $1200.

Oh, and the games would actually, you know, mean something besides “you win the Fiesta Bowl, congrats Oklahoma” so casual fans are more likely to be pulled in because, wow, now Oklahoma gets to play Alabama in the next round.
So, for example, a VaTech fan would rather pay $1000 for a mid-December 1st round loss in Stillwater, rather than spend $1400 & go to South Beach for the Orange Bowl? Right
or, they screw up & win in Stillwater & earn another $1000 trip to Columbus right before Christmas
December 29th, 2010 at 5:16 PM
I did…and in your example you had teams that were not in the top 25. A more accurate “e.g.” would have been Boise St, Stanford, and Nevada, if you were staying in your own 16 team playoff.
/but that would not have made your point, so you just picked popular schools
December 29th, 2010 at 5:16 PM
So it was stabbin who handed me a beer can full of piss in high school
/I swigged it and threw it up
December 29th, 2010 at 5:17 PM
They’re going for football, right? Given the Tech fans I know, they would go.
December 29th, 2010 at 5:19 PM
geoffrey, you’re argument doesn’t make sense. yes, a playoff could have a match-up of 2 marquee teams. it could also have conneticut-boise st. and no one would watch. people root for their school. big schools=big fan bases. i don’t understand how this year’s match-ups are an argument for a playoff.
December 29th, 2010 at 5:20 PM
I have a feeling this is the thread that makes every come into agreement on BCS vs. playoffs arguments.
[reads through comments]
Well fuck…
December 29th, 2010 at 5:21 PM
Well, if the “popular” programs are the ones that are typically good, then that scenario would be more common than the situation this year. Now, if those “popular” schools start to suck, well then they deserve their fate of not qualifying for a playoff. A bowl system continues to reward them despite their mediocrity, which is my second reason for wanting a playoff after deciding the national champion on the field.
December 29th, 2010 at 5:22 PM
i don’t understand how this year’s match-ups are an argument for a playoff.
Sir, you’ve been around here long enough. Anything can be twisted, mashed up, shit on, and beaten to make an argument for a playoff.
December 29th, 2010 at 5:22 PM
Nope. I screwed myself. Had a chance for two for $900 each. Thought that was too high. Then had a chance for two for $1000 each. Thought that was too high. I do have a flight, a rental car, and a hotel room though. Anybody know of any good bars in Glendale?
December 29th, 2010 at 5:24 PM
Two major problems with your argument…the same teams in the BCS games are going to be the same teams in the playoffs. Additionally, the national championship is decided on the field already.
December 29th, 2010 at 5:24 PM
Well, if you’re going to end up with some matchups that are less compelling in both the BCS and in a playoff, I’m for having a playoff. My point was more to disagree with the idea of having “bad” matchups as evidence that a playoff would be bad. The problem already exists in the current system, so why not at least have a proper system for deciding a national champion at the same time?
December 29th, 2010 at 5:29 PM
I was talking about bowls in general. Michigan could go 7-5 (4-4) and Michigan State could go 9-3 (6-2) but Michigan could actually get invited to a better bowl game (that is, one with a higher payout).
And the national championship is not decided on the field. Auburn went undefeated in 2004 and didn’t get a chance to play for the title. TCU went undefeated this year and doesn’t have a chance to play for it. Utah’s done it, Boise’s done it.
December 29th, 2010 at 5:31 PM
Any bar in Glendale will be good, they have a lot of talent out there…
