Good coordinators don’t make good head coaches. Mornhinweg should never be a head coach again.
December 29th, 2010 at 8:51 AM
Shocking, but Maryland is a doo doo job.
December 29th, 2010 at 8:54 AM
TBL do you want to beat up a bunch of retirees or something? This is getting obnoxious.
Maybe instead of constantly bashing “pensions” – and certainly there is at least some justification for that – you could say something like “mismanagement of pension funds by politicians”, which is a more accurate depiction of how most states and municipalities got into the mess they are in.
December 29th, 2010 at 8:54 AM
June Jones makes $2 million a year at SMU. He reportedly turned down $3.5 million from Maryland.
he’ll do better at SMU
December 29th, 2010 at 8:55 AM
Same with Capers. He should just stay in Green Bay…forever.
/wishful thinking
December 29th, 2010 at 8:56 AM
Marty Mornhinweg’s done a damn good job with Mike Vick. When will Mornhinweg get another shot as a head coach?
I thought the word was he’d get a long look for the Cleveland job
December 29th, 2010 at 8:56 AM
Bar, I love you. I think you’re a terrific girl, but you’re standing like a fucking dickhead.
/Kenny Powers’d
December 29th, 2010 at 8:57 AM
it’s harder to say “mismanagement of pensions by politicians” when you’re lighting your torch and carrying a pitchfork.
simplifying problems is always the easiest way to stir up the anger of the masses.
December 29th, 2010 at 8:59 AM
going to Detroit on my next vacation
December 29th, 2010 at 9:01 AM
What a shithole
December 29th, 2010 at 9:02 AM
I can certainly appreciate the torment you’ve endured, but this certainly isn’t always true. Holmgren, Belichick, Fisher, just off the top of my head were all coordinators.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:02 AM
That snow video is awesome.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:03 AM
What a coincidence. I thought I was the only guy who collected discontinued colorways of Hermes scarfs.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:03 AM
when your taxes soar in the coming years, blame pensions
these pension funds should just buy gold. if this sports blog has taught me anything, its that everyone should buy gold always.
/and guns

I can see that.. if one of the factors in women making less than men is the likelihood of pregnancy and taking maternity leave, a lesbian is less likely to ever get pregnant.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:03 AM
Fixed for truthiness.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:04 AM
I can’t believe Iowa won that game last night. I cashed out at 12:30 when it looked like Mizzou was going to pull away. Always good to see Pinkel and Co. lose. Bitches.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:04 AM
but Maryland is a doo doo job.
it is a basketball first school, but i’m not sure why it’s a “doo doo” job.
-good, young QB
-BCS conference (that’s winable)
-good recruiting area
-school that will spend money
December 29th, 2010 at 9:04 AM
true. horrible job mis-managing the pensions. no doubt. HOWEVER … do you really think states can sustain pensions forever? no way. can’t happen.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:05 AM
At what point did he get tired of moving the fucking clock? God, I hate snow. I’m thrilled that I have made it through December without having to put sandbags in my trunk.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:06 AM
Deitsch’s 2010 media awards.
outrage, Jesse Palmer should have won most improved. and no the U for Best Doc? love the pick for Media Feud, SVG is the best
December 29th, 2010 at 9:07 AM
Sportsdork- all head coaches were coordinators or assistants. My point still stands
December 29th, 2010 at 9:07 AM
Maybe some people just aren’t cut out for being a head coach and should stick to what they do well.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:07 AM
Ditto. I had Mizzou high in my confidence picks because of the suspensions and such. They can fuck themselves.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:08 AM
saw Black Swan last night and thought it was an excellent film.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:08 AM
What a homo.
/stereotyped
December 29th, 2010 at 9:09 AM
Good coordinators don’t make good head coaches.
this is dumb. maybe throw a ‘necessarily’ into that sentence. you can decide where is most appropriate.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:09 AM
1) How many good QBs have they had the last ten years?
2) Eh…
3) Decent recruiting area, owned by Va Tech, WVU, and Penn State
4) Please, that football program is horribly underfunded.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:10 AM
Fuck Missou indeed and especially Gabbert.
/wishes he had an “N” on the side of his helmet.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:10 AM
Maybe some people just aren’t cut out for being a head coach and should stick to what they do well.
I’m pretty sure that someone said this exact thing when Belicheck flamed out in Cleveland.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:11 AM
Those old fucks took er taxes!
December 29th, 2010 at 9:11 AM
What the fuck people? Just because you’re a good coordinator doesn’t mean you’re a good head coach. Fuck
December 29th, 2010 at 9:11 AM
Maybe some people just aren’t cut out for being a head coach and should stick to what they do well.
rehab dog killers? so he’s like a distant relative of the dog whisperer?
December 29th, 2010 at 9:14 AM
As many of them are currently constructed? No. Of course there is a need for reform, and immediately. Does that mean I think retirees should be screwed out of what was promised them? No. I do think people who “gamed” a system that was designed to be easily gamed could have modifications made to their future payouts.
What is annoying is the seeming barrage of stories about retirees who have “too nice” a car or “too big” a house, with little mention of state and local governments who raided pension coffers for other ill-conceived projects and also didn’t pay into pension funds as they were supposed to.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:15 AM
What the fuck people? Just because you’re a good coordinator doesn’t mean you’re a good head coach. Fuck
but that’s not what you said originally. here’s your comment
Good coordinators don’t make good head coaches.
well, there are good coordinators that have been good head coaches. so you’re wrong. if you’d have said “good coordinators don’t always make good head coaches”, you’d have been right. blanket statements are usually wrong.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:16 AM
Oh I see where I did wrong. I need coffee. Sorry
December 29th, 2010 at 9:16 AM
Pirate got a lot of national attention for what he did at Tech. Maryland will be more competitive in future recruiting especially in southern VA.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:18 AM
Sean Payton and Mike Tomlin disagree with you.
/last two Super Bowl winning coaches
December 29th, 2010 at 9:19 AM
1) How many good QBs have they had the last ten years?
2) Eh…
3) Decent recruiting area, owned by Va Tech, WVU, and Penn State
4) Please, that football program is horribly underfunded.
-several good college QBs, but Obrien looks promising
-how is the ACC not winnable? they almost won the putrid thing this year
-true, but fridge couldn’t recruit and a big name would be more successful
-4th highest paid coach in the ACC (johnson, grobe, beamer)
December 29th, 2010 at 9:20 AM
YAY! Iowa won! I’m awaiting Lisk’s post on indisputable evidence on reviews today. Mizzou got kinda fucked in the last 3 mins there.
Marcus Coker. Doak Walker 2011.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:21 AM
how is the ACC not winnable?
two words: Al Golden
December 29th, 2010 at 9:22 AM
Fuck that shit, they fucked themselves by having their pasty signal-caller lob a floaty butterfly into coverage.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:23 AM
A good coach can come in and battle with recruits though.
Wait…so you get to pump up Iowa when they weren’t even worth your time?
Hell fucking yes. He’s such a badass. With him Nebraska goes 13-0 this year. He’s a really good QB.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:23 AM
His friends call him Alfred.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:25 AM
question—i’m going to see true grit tonight with a guy (husband of a friend of my wife’s, he’s a good guy). it’s been a long time since i’ve seen a movie with just another guy. is it automatically assumed you sit with one seat between youse?
don;t want awkwardness, could ruin chance at a second date, you understand
December 29th, 2010 at 9:26 AM
would you recommend it OVER the fighter?
December 29th, 2010 at 9:26 AM
Dude’s probably a Walmart greeter or some shit now. Good riddance.
/puts fingers back in ears
//loudly yells, “lah-lah-lah-lah-lah!”.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:26 AM
No chance. Shawn Watson wouldn’t know what to do if he couldn’t just call QB keeper left, or QB keeper right.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:27 AM
@roast – yes, one seat separation is SOP.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:27 AM
So Mornhinweg is now getting all the credit for Vick having an MVP type yr? Ask the good Lion fans how good of a head coach he is.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:27 AM
Why do you keep bringing this up every time you bring up a movie? Is there a joke I’m missing?
December 29th, 2010 at 9:27 AM
lol….I think it’s acceptable to sit with a space in between. Treat it like the urinal wall. If there’s room for you to skip one, do it.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:28 AM
Oh noes! It’s the fan police! QUICK! Everyone grab your notebooks! Parrish is going to tell us how to root for our teams!
/sits intently at desk with pen ready
December 29th, 2010 at 9:28 AM
brah, if you really want to see both, just buy a ticket for one, watch it, and then walk into the theater showing the next viewing of the other one.
/did this all the time back in highschool
December 29th, 2010 at 9:28 AM
Marcus Coker. Doak Walker 2011.
the brakes, they are for pumping. remember, marijuana is a gateway drug.
coke for 2011!
December 29th, 2010 at 9:28 AM
Not sure about that. At Nebraska he sure would have a better running game and defense to support him. Probably better special teams too. How do you think the Nebraska WRs compare to Mizzou’s?
December 29th, 2010 at 9:28 AM
Best be on the lookout for the ol’ “hole in the bottom of the popcorn bucket” trick.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:29 AM
Irish – give me a ring when you get here – I’ll buy you a beer.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:30 AM
I agree with most of what you’ve said, except for “promised”. I don’t think the firefighters in Illinois were promised that they could retire at 50. There were two groups at the negotiating table and I’m sure they made it a point they wanted to retire at a much earlier age with full benefits. The gov’t made terrible deals in flush times. That’s why were here. Mis-managing on pension investments would be a distant second, imo especially given the rebound in equity and bond markets in 2009-2010.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:30 AM
One seat buffer will make your dong hole in the popcorn bucket attempt much more difficult.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:30 AM
Ask the good
LionBrowns fans how good of a head coach he is./Belichek’d
//seriously, I don’t care about Marty Mornhinweg one way or the other, but not winning in one place doesn’t mean he can’t win in a different place
///see Gene Chizik for the college parallel
December 29th, 2010 at 9:30 AM
I’ve got too many movies to see….I hate falling behind like this.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:30 AM
Touche. Though in defense of Watson, I think he’s being told to do the Oregon-type of spread stuff rather than it being his idea. He is a west coast passing all the way. I think he’s a good recruiter though, so losing him this off season would hurt as NEB is going to have a beastly class (for Nebraska, anyway).
December 29th, 2010 at 9:30 AM
just saw my new favorite Girl in Commercial Who We’ll Never Know the Name Of….nationwide insurance commercial, girl on a bench, ponytail and dress with some dork with a microphone and a huge boulder hanging over her…..watch for it!
December 29th, 2010 at 9:30 AM
I’m not going to lie. I’m shocked by this. Really?… you need to keep a seat of distance? At a movie? Why?
December 29th, 2010 at 9:31 AM
I always said that just make sure the armrest is down and that you both don’t go for it.
I liked True Grit, but it didn’t meet my uber high expectations. The Steinfeld girl gave an awesome performance but I’m sure everyone is saying that.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:31 AM
I’ll say this for him – he likes the wind.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:31 AM
Orrrr…you could do like me and sit/go right next to him. Embrace the awkwardness and make it your own.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:31 AM
Nebraska beats both UT and A&M for sure and they don’t lose to anyone that they beat.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:32 AM
Hey SC, congrats on winning Insight! Yay Stanzi.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:32 AM
jersey, would you sit on the same side of a booth at a restaurant if you went to eat with a buddy?
this happened to me in middle school. went to eat with a buddy and his mom. me and the buddy were sitting on one side of the booth and she went to the john. hilarity ensued
December 29th, 2010 at 9:33 AM
I don’t either. Pretty comfortable in my sexuality that I don’t need the buffer with another dude. Especially if it’s a crowded movie.
At home is the only place I think this qualifies. I’m not sitting next to you on the couch if the recliner is open.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:33 AM
The Fighter is chick flick of the year, from what I’m hearing.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:33 AM
tried this in TNF post last night, only got two responses. pardon my interruption:
hey gamers….i have a story assignment on in-store marketing of video games and consoles. trying to talak to all heavy hitters in makers and stores about this. any thoughts on what you see in best buy, or target or gamestop when you go to buy, or the way they work up a buzz on games ahead of time for pre-orders? any thoughts would be cool, since i am no gamer and have been cramming for when i get interviews with EA, Microsoft, ubisoft, Sony, Best Buy, Gamestop, etc.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:34 AM
There are times I do this even with the wife. I like to stretch out during a movie if I can.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:35 AM
this was actually pretty jarring. I was hooked at the first picture of Michigan Central Station. jeebus.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:35 AM
If it’s just him and me, of course not. But that is more for logistical reasons than anything. At the movies, I’m not going to go out of my way to make sure there is some “Homo Protection” wall between me and somebody I know. I dunno, maybe it’s just me, but I find it odd to have a seat between me and a friend at a movie theater.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:36 AM
I’m really going to miss that guy. So fun to root for. Always brought some funny quotes to the beat reporters even though he was being totally serious. This team was about as pleasing as they could be even though they had such a disappointing season on the field.
Hope Americanzi gets a chance in the NFL. Think he’s worth a 5th or later for someone to take a flier on.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:36 AM
Not sure about that. At Nebraska he sure would have a better running game and defense to support him. Probably better special teams too. How do you think the Nebraska WRs compare to Mizzou’s?
hey angry, did you get my response to your wish for bj’s every morning yesterday? if not, i’d be happy to c&p for ya
/feeling service-y

Roast- I sit across my wife until the other couple arrive
December 29th, 2010 at 9:37 AM
Agree with Jersey on this. Haven’t seen the Fighter but how are the heist scenes?
December 29th, 2010 at 9:38 AM
Best chick flick/heist movie since Thelma & Louise?
December 29th, 2010 at 9:39 AM
So… who watched Team USA dismantle the Slovaks last night? The Canadians are taking cover this morning after that firebombing. Kyle Palmieri put that one away early.
USA! USA! USA!
December 29th, 2010 at 9:39 AM
Well you have a home theater, so I assume you have tiered seatings, which means that wouldn’t be much of as issue, right?
December 29th, 2010 at 9:39 AM
Best be on the lookout for the ol’ “hole in the bottom of the popcorn bucket” trick.
+1 for me laughing. but in reality you’ve given me an idea for my next wanking sessions. mmmmmm, hot buttery goodness
December 29th, 2010 at 9:39 AM
thanks TK!
December 29th, 2010 at 9:39 AM
Detroit hasn’t changed much in the last couple years. Went to a conference downtown and on the train over to the hotel, there were burned out buildings all over.
No redeeming qualities for Detroit since there are other ways to get to Canada.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:40 AM
He’s from Jersey… and he’s a Domer!!!! CCHA bitches…
December 29th, 2010 at 9:40 AM
I don’t go to game stores/Best Buy not knowing what game I’m getting, so in-store marketing has a very small affect on me. I read reviews of games and previews online and go from there.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:40 AM
Actually, I’m not so sure they beat Missouri if Gabby is QB for the Huskers. If Gabbert is QB, then Missouri isn’t loading up on Martinez letting Helu run wild. Instead, Nebraska is forced to throw and the Missouri pass defense is their strength on D. It’s all what-if’s anyway.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:40 AM
Vez – I haven’t bought a video game from a store since I was in high school. Not sure if that hurts or helps your cause from an information standpoint. I order everything off of Amazon.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:41 AM
For me, it’s a comfort thing, not homo protection. Like sitting on an airplane. If you’re not with the wife/gfriend, ya gotta have some space. Call it the “Rules of Handholding”.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:41 AM
So as it stands now, Iowa will have a horse for a RB and nothing else next year, right? 6-6 FTW!!
December 29th, 2010 at 9:41 AM
So… who watched Team USA dismantle the Slovaks last night? The Canadians are taking cover this morning after that firebombing. Kyle Palmieri put that one away early.
You are already forgetting that the red & white beat a better team by the same margin of victory?
December 29th, 2010 at 9:42 AM
This. Games are too expensive to depend on in-store marketing. I would say certain websites have more sway over what game I might get then any advertising in store or not.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:43 AM
But take away Gabbert from Mizzou and the tigers aren’t close to what they were this year. On a side note, I still have no clue why the B12 didn’t have Mizzou playing Washington and Nebraska playing Iowa. I have to assume it was just a fuck you to NEB, but Locker-Gabbert would have made that game fun and Nebraska-Iowa would have been good. They could have had 2 good games instead of one. Makes no sense at all.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:43 AM
I don’t go to game stores/Best Buy not knowing what game I’m getting, so in-store marketing has a very small affect on me. I read reviews of games and previews online and go from there.
This. Games are $50-$60 per game, I make sure to research a game I am interested in before hand to make sure the reviews are generally positive. Then it’s get in, get out of the store as quickly as possible.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:43 AM
would you recommend it OVER the fighter?
haven’t seen The Fighter yet, but unless it has a scene where Kunis is going down on Portman, i don’t see how it could be better than Black Swan.
good movie to take the female in your life.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:44 AM
I’ve been using IGN for a decade now. I think if they pumped the game up and gave it a solid rating, I would buy it as long as it’s not some fantasy game or something like that. There are too many terrible video games out there for me to rely on in-store marketing.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:44 AM
Videos of stuff blowing up with Eminem music did it for me. I also liked the latest ones with celebs and everyday Joe’s holding RPGs for Black Ops. Thing is, I would have bought those anyhow so the good commercials just fired me up more.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:44 AM
Oh did everyone catch the Favre tribute in the 4th quarter last night? I havent laughed that hard in a while. It was like a parody …SNL could just rerun it and it’d be funnier than anything they could come up with.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:45 AM
Vez – I haven’t bought a video game from a store since I was in high school. Not sure if that hurts or helps your cause from an information standpoint. I order everything off of Amazon.
that helps, sc, thanks. you too husker. means i can ask the execs about how they approach the fact that many buy online or like husker do all their research before going to store
December 29th, 2010 at 9:45 AM
Has anyone watched more than 5 seconds of a bowl game thus far? When do match-ups that don’t blow begin?
December 29th, 2010 at 9:45 AM
I agree with this, but he was terrible against Nebraska anyway so I don’t think it’d change things for them much. In that game anyway.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:46 AM
Metacritic helps me decide a little. More so than anything though, I think now that PS3 has demos available for free that has impacted the games I actually purchase. Gotta test drive the car before I’m driving off the lot with it.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:46 AM
Are you seriously pumping up a victory over Slovakia? Really? That’s kind of sad.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:47 AM
Third-signed. I am very cautious with purchasing games. For instance I wanted to get the Castlevania game that came out around Halloween but after reading numerous reviews I never made it into the store to buy it. The stores themselves have little to do with it.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:47 AM
Negatory.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:47 AM
Yeah, I loved the last shot of him laying on the ground like he was dead.

They had the Independence Bowl on when I was getting my hair feathered at Toni & Guy a couple of days ago.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:47 AM
Marian Hossa is from Slovakia, not the Czech Republic. Therefore, it is impossible for the Czechs to be better than the Slovaks. That’s why they played your game at 4 pm. JV game. They wanted the varsity teams out there for primetime.

December 29th, 2010 at 9:47 AM
Last night’s game was the first one I sat down and watched exclusively. Tonight’s Ok St-Zona game will be good and I will watch the Holiday Bowl due to my Husker love, but I assume ratings will suck balls for that game. Terrible match up and it doesn’t start until 10 EST. Saturday is great, but with a caveat. 3 SEC/B10 games start within 30 minutes of each other. Wish they were spread out a bit more.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:48 AM
I didn’t love it. Obviously Kunis going down on Portman didn’t have the impact on me that it did on you….
December 29th, 2010 at 9:48 AM
that’s more like it. good stuff folks. shared bylines for all!!
anything on in-store demos? i have also asked the guy who runs a site called Set on Stun for an interview….hawkeye last night (i think) said joystiq is a good site. have been to IGN, and will pursue someone there as well.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:48 AM
+ 1 clown
December 29th, 2010 at 9:48 AM
Every time I go to Best Buy, I go to the video game section just to see what’s out. If there is in store marketing, I have most likely seen the commercial on it to know if it interest me.

December 29th, 2010 at 9:49 AM
hey gamers….i have a story assignment on in-store marketing of video games and consoles. trying to talak to all heavy hitters in makers and stores about this. any thoughts on what you see in best buy, or target or gamestop when you go to buy, or the way they work up a buzz on games ahead of time for pre-orders? any thoughts would be cool, since i am no gamer and have been cramming for when i get interviews with EA, Microsoft, ubisoft, Sony, Best Buy, Gamestop, etc.
In-store marketing doesn’t do much for me. Only in the store for the 30 seconds it takes to grab pre-ordered game. Biggest factor is buying game from proven studio, and keeping an eye on reviews for other quality games.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:49 AM
Yes! The whole thing was like an in-memoriam thing they do for dead folks.

THe Michigan Central Station is an unbeleivable building. Many plans have been floated over the years to rehab it. Unfortunately, it’s so big, no one can figure out what to do with it.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:49 AM
Nope. I’ll watch the ND game Friday and the national title game and that’s about it. If this was the regular season and some of these matchups were being played, I’d watch, but these games don’t mean anything except for bragging rights. I could care less.

December 29th, 2010 at 9:50 AM
Mizzou is lucky Nebraska is leaving the B12. Pelini owns their offense. I don’t think the Tigers will get a QB as good as Gabbert for some time, and NEB whipped his ass twice. What sucks (for NEB, anyway) is that they are built to stop Mizzou…not sure they are ready for the power game of OSU, WIS, MSU or even Iowa. I think NEB could lose 4 games next year. They need to recruit some big LBs as opposed to the smaller, faster ones.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:50 AM
I strongly agree with these comments. Usually online runs reduced price deals earlier as well so that is where I primarily buy games. Like everyone said, I know what I’m buying before I go in.

That’s why they played your game at 4 pm. JV game. They wanted the varsity teams out there for primetime.
Or it could be that the organizer know they could hold a game at 4 am and the building would still be packed. Are you sure there were more American than Canadian fans in the arena for the US/Slovakia game?
December 29th, 2010 at 9:51 AM

That guy is like Jason Vorhees. Some how, some way, he’ll be back. Just keep him away from the NFL Network Draft coverage….I can avoid him everywhere else.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:52 AM
I would say certain websites have more sway over what game I might get then any advertising in store or not.
Metacritic helps me decide a little. More so than anything though, I think now that PS3 has demos available for free that has impacted the games I actually purchase. Gotta test drive the car before I’m driving off the lot with it.
100% correct. Microsoft & Sony allowing free demos is a big part of deciding to buy or not.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:52 AM
TBL watching his boy Kobe? doesnt surprise me
December 29th, 2010 at 9:52 AM
Did TBL pay you to say that? Bowl games mean a lot towards recruiting (whether they should or not is a different argument). A team like Nebraska gets to hit up the California HS scene and network. A school like Michigan/Miss St gets to do likewise with Florida.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:52 AM
Has anyone watched more than 5 seconds of a bowl game thus far? When do match-ups that don’t blow begin?
matchups have been fine in most cases, in the sense that the teams are sort of evenly matched. problem is twofold…too many bowls with unknown sponsors make viewers feel like they’re at a lame party, and no one knows many of the teams, let alone players
December 29th, 2010 at 9:52 AM

How bout those Eagles?
December 29th, 2010 at 9:52 AM
I think Iowa is alright next year. Replacing a senior QB is never easy, but vandenberg has looked alright when he’s played. Replacing 3/4s of the defensive line won’t be easy.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:53 AM
Looks like not everyone is boycotting the bowl games.

roastvezina – one thing to consider may be the demographics too. in-store, they are probably marketing to kids who depend on their parents to drive them there and hang out. in-store demos would be crucial for that demo. for older gamers (like the guys on this site), they’re less likely to hang at the local Best Buy with their boys and more likely to read reviews of games online from the people who get to try them out pre-realease. just a though, skippy.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:56 AM
I agree with that. I was talking from a fan perspective. Mainly a football fan with no interest in either of those teams. Sure, it’s important to you about Neb recruiting, but I could give a shit.
Hope that clears my viewpoint up. Not trying to start a 500 comment CFB war.

Iowa loses 12 starters from their bowl game depth chart. That’s a lot to lose, especially when 3/4 are the DL and one is a SR QB. They do get 2011 w/out OSU and WIS though.

December 29th, 2010 at 9:58 AM
Not the greatest performance ever. For me, they’re playing with house money at this point since I didn’t even expect them to be a playoff team this year. I’m not expecting a Super Bowl run or anything since there are far too many holes/injuries on the defensive side of the ball and O-line.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:58 AM
Eventually, you’ll travel outside your little world of friends who agree with you and see that the majority of people agree – too many bowl games. They mean absolutely nothing. glorified exhibitions.
Iowa beating a conf rival at home with 10 recruits in the building means more to recruiting than some crummy bowl game, IMO

TK – there were multiple pictures in that gallery of buildings that looked like they used to be badass. those things make me sad. it reminded me of this time I did a structural inspection for a frat house in Gainesville. these jackasses had completely mutilated this huge house. it had such potential to be a grand, badass house, but years of those douchebags tearing it apart has it in a state where it will be so expensive to repair it now, they probably won’t ever do it.

December 29th, 2010 at 10:03 AM
I’m shaking my head…there are too many games (I don’t mind)…but they do mean something. They’re a rewarding trip for players. They mean 15 extra practices. They mean small to large economic boosts for communities.
And exhibitions? Stats count. Record counts. When a coach retires they flash that “Bowl Record” stat up there. Coaches are playing their starters full minutes.
And for recruiting…Nebraska gets a lot of exposure in SoCal all year…Oh wait.
December 29th, 2010 at 10:04 AM

December 29th, 2010 at 10:09 AM
It does. And it really sucks that we didn’t do that this year. I’m a fan and admit that there were far more pressing matters than the Insight Bowl last night.
I watched the entire Blackhawks game then flipped over to the bowl game. I had the USA/Slovakia game on my DVR and was switching over to that throughout the bowl game. All in all, I saw about 2 total quarters of the Insight Bowl. It wasn’t meaningless, per se, but it was not high on my priorities of entertainment and significance last night.
I’m still in favor of bowl games because of their value to the university as a whole but I can admit that I didn’t care much about the Insight. Of course I wanted them to win but it wasn’t earth shattering if they did or not.
December 29th, 2010 at 10:09 AM

Once again, the fan police are at it. Teach me how to root for my teams! I implore you! This is all so serious, I must know how to do it properly!

I dont know SC. What does this say about bowl games when Iowa’s biggest fan boy doesnt watch his American hero play his last game?

I’m sure one of them will be able to tell you in the next couple of hours. Looked like a shoulder last night. Hope it’s only a game or two. We were fully healthy for all of 16:32 last night.

CJ – It says that we had a supremely disappointing season that started with high expectations. Coupled with the arrests and suspensions there was a diminished interest because of all of the negativity associated with Hawkeye football in 2010.
Nothing more. Nothing less. I’ll still watch them play football next season and I’m still in favor of the bowl system providing funding for my school, conference and a vacation option for my fellow alums.

When you talk shit for 3 months about how awesome Iowa is, and then they suck and you ignore them, you get what you deserve.

SC: it says that you didnt watch, but you would have watched if it was a playoff game and they had a chance at the title.

Go smoke a joint and relax. Maybe then UGA will beat Auburn like you suggested in August.

I’m just saying you open yourself up to this when you talk and talk and talk about the greatness of Iowa, Clayborne, Stanzi, etc…

The didn’t deserve a spot in a playoff for a national title, CJ. They lost 5 games, 2 of them to really bad teams. They were placed where they deserved to be placed.
We lost 2 defacto playoff games against the Buckeyes and Badgers this season. I enjoyed watching both despite their outcomes.
