The Five Most Overpaid College Football Assistants
USA Today unveiled their database of college football assistants’ salaries. Here are the five most overpaid with two caveats. (1) Monte Kiffin’s salary was unavailable because USC is private (2) I stuck to those currently employed, so Greg Davis and Steve Addazio were spared.
Nick Holt (Washington – $650,000): He’s the nation’s 7th highest paid assistant. Neither of his Husky defenses have finished in the Top 75 in yards against. A DC pulling down his money should slow down top opposing offenses. His unit gave up 56 against Nebraska, 44 against Arizona, 41 against Stanford and 53 against Oregon. Yes, he got it done at USC, under Pete Carroll’s tutelage with Pete Carroll’s players.
Norm Chow (UCLA – $640,000): Norm Chow is a delicate genius. He’s 65. He doesn’t recruit. He’s there for his schemes, which have been ineffective. After having offenses ranked 111th in 2008 and 87th in 2009, Rick Neuheisel forced Chow to change his system to the Pistol. They were ranked 98th. At this point Chow is an empty name and he’s the exact sort of uninventive hire that will leave Rick Neuheisel unemployed by this time next year.
Gary Crowton (LSU – $450,000): LSU’s offense ranked 89th in total yardage. The unit probably cost the Tigers a national title shot. What’s pathetic is that this was a marked improvement over 2009, when they ranked 111th. LSU has not ranked in the Top 50 since 2007. That’s inexcusable with the amount of talent available.
Chuck Long (Kansas – $350,000): Long inherited a Kansas offense that was Top 25 three years in a row. This year, Long’s focus-less spread/pro hybrid left them ranked 113th. Long has not been affiliated with an offense that finished higher than 70th in total yardage since 2004 and that was when he piggy-backed on the work of Leach and Mangino. He was bad enough this year to overshadow “former Detroit Lions quarterback” and “worst head coach in San Diego State history” from his resume.
Tony Gibson (Michigan – $231,500): Gibson has a dual role. He is Michigan’s secondary coach and its Special Teams coach. Both units were among the worst in Division I-A. However, you have to give him credit.

I had no idea who Tony Gibson was. Thanks Duffy.
December 22nd, 2010 at 11:48 AM
*scans list*
where’s Lane Kiffin?
December 22nd, 2010 at 11:49 AM
I’m confused, how much are you saying each of them should be paid?
December 22nd, 2010 at 11:50 AM
It’s interesting that Crowton (LA Tech) and Chow (BYU) were offensive masterminds and huge innovators of the college game. Now they’re trying to keep up with the times by moving to the spread/pistol formation to prove that they’re still relevant.
December 22nd, 2010 at 11:51 AM
UM defensive coaches should be wearing ski mask when they collect their checks.
December 22nd, 2010 at 11:52 AM
Greg Robinson. I don’t care what his salary is. He could make $1.50 and it would be $1.49 too much.
December 22nd, 2010 at 11:53 AM
Yes, let’s judge Nick Holt on the job he’s done with Ty Willingham’s players. Which, considering the “talent” he has, hasn’t been that bad.
Let’s judge him on how he has recruited (phenomenally), and how the defense performs in a couple years, shall we?
December 22nd, 2010 at 11:53 AM
I like that one Duffy. I still remember when he was coming out of Iowa with all the hype and I was pissed when the Vikings didn’t get him.
December 22nd, 2010 at 11:53 AM
In all fairness to Mr. Gibson, he was thrown into an Uzi shootout, armed with a butter knife.
December 22nd, 2010 at 11:53 AM
Rex Ryan is fat as shit.
December 22nd, 2010 at 11:54 AM
Less than the contract mutually agreed upon. Or, less than the players.
December 22nd, 2010 at 11:54 AM
Needs more Gerg Robinson and less Tony Gibson, but then again I’m just an idiot commenter, so what do I know.
December 22nd, 2010 at 11:54 AM
AKA the Chas Weis Corollary
December 22nd, 2010 at 11:55 AM
speaking of BYU…
now THAT’S an offensive hotbed.
December 22nd, 2010 at 11:55 AM
This is all based upon the caliber of recruits they are playing with. If this was the NFL and you were working with pro caliber players, then yeah lets judge them. I have to give some of these guys a pass because they simply don’t really have much to work with here.
December 22nd, 2010 at 11:55 AM
TJ
Colts put Austin Collie on IR.
December 22nd, 2010 at 11:55 AM
QBs since 2007:
08: Jarrett Lee pick-six machine
09: Jordan Jefferson, aka the stupidest quarterback in football
10: Jefferson/Lee combo
/actually looking forward to Zack Mettenberger running the offense in 11
//if Les lets him play
December 22nd, 2010 at 11:57 AM
Wow… Good to know that KOK and Norm were only making $350K combined. That’s reasonable pay.
December 22nd, 2010 at 11:58 AM
Mississippi delta was shining like a national guitar… i am following the river down the highway to the cradle of the civil war.
December 22nd, 2010 at 11:58 AM
Pete Carroll is known for his Defensive prowess, no?
December 22nd, 2010 at 11:59 AM
Some should be paid threeve dollars, and some should be paid $Texas.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:00 PM
JH, how dare you say anything. Duffy knows EVERYTHING about the Michigan football program.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:00 PM
Add Hal Mumme, Dave Kragthorpe (Steve’s father), and indirectly Mike Leach who attended BYU but didn’t play college football.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:01 PM
Tony Gibson and no GERG? At least Gibson can pretend to recruit.
C’mon, ty, that was an epic miss.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:01 PM
That’s like, your opinion, man.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:02 PM
I just can’t wait for the eventual overpaid head coach list. That’ll be a hoot.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:02 PM
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:03 PM
But do any of them have foot fetishes?
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:04 PM
I just can’t wait for the eventual overpaid head coach list. That’ll be a hoot.
not trying to pick a fight (based on your name), but that list should start and end with ferentz.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:05 PM
I just can’t wait for the eventual overpaid head coach list. That’ll be a hoot.
Already done, IIRC.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:06 PM
People in Iowa are completely enamored with Ferentz. The man is a saint and can do no wrong. It’s really weird.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:06 PM
And here I thought you’ve been around a while. Is it time for the yearly I’m not an Iowa/alum speech?
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:07 PM
Reasoning on Greg Robinson.
1. He’s not “overpaid.” 270K is less than a lot of position coaches make at some schools.
2. I don’t think he’s good, but lumping all the failures on him lets Rich Rod off the hook. Rodriguez hired all of Robinson’s assistants and dictated what scheme he was supposed to run. Not saying Robinson is even halfway decent, but the circumstances never gave him the opportunity.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:07 PM
Not after the Ohio State loss. There were cab drivers in Iowa City claiming they could do a better job than Fererntz and for a quarter of the price. I know, I seent it.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:08 PM
I’ll do it for you, brah. hawkeye as a thing for birds of prey and eyeballs.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:09 PM
And here I thought you’ve been around a while. Is it time for the yearly I’m not an Iowa/alum speech?
i have been around awhile, guess i missed it. just watching my ass, some people can be a tad sensitive around these parts
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:09 PM
Good explanation on GERG, ty. He still sucks hind tit though.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:09 PM
But not feet. Let’s not confuse him with Rex Ryan here.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:09 PM
You’re lying. There can’t possibly be cabs in Iowa City.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:10 PM
There are. And they overcharge the cost of a ride after a game.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:10 PM
Oh, there are cabs. And gameday rate to get down to the bars after the game is a ridiculous $40. Highway robbery.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:11 PM
I think a Mags signal has just been lit.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:11 PM
Yes, but it’s my major argument why Rich Rodriguez should be fired. His micromanaging has been an integral part of the defensive apocalypse that has happened the past three years. Scott Shafer is actually doing a really great job at Syracuse. I don’t know how you trust him to rebuild the defense.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:11 PM
So what you’re saying, if I follow you correctly, is that Rex Ryan, the Head Coach of the New York Jets, has some sort of sexually deviant fascination with feet?
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:12 PM
Smallest public university in the Big Ten yet they raise the 3rd most amount of dollars for the athletic department in the conference among public universities. I think they can spare some cash.
He makes a lot of money, but he’s not grossly overpaid.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:12 PM
You’re lying. There can’t possibly be cabs in Iowa City.
that should have said beds. people just jump into the back of a pick-up driving by, and jump out when they get close to the fishin’ hole they’re going to.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:12 PM
Greg Robinson is bad. Rich Kotite bad. He’s overpaid.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:12 PM
No worries
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:13 PM
anybody else bothered by the amount of broth in Progresso soups? I mean, damn, siphon some of that off and put more “steak” and noodles in my Rick & Hearty Steak and Homestyle Noodles soup.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:13 PM
Rex Ryan, the Head Coach of the New York Jets, has some sort of sexually deviant fascination with feet
also fascination includes underperforming latin quarterbacks.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:14 PM
My avatar quest continues. My accounts apparently don’t exist.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:14 PM
they pull that same shit in Fayetteville. however I find paying it is better than seeing my face on the county jail website. sucks either way.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:15 PM
I’d rather have KF running my program than anyone else in the B10 not wearing a vest.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:15 PM
I love this post. Nice work, Duffy.
Nick Holt is terribly overpaid. We’ll see what he draws up for Nebraska. If they get ripped again, that certainly won’t bode well.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:16 PM
I really need to start proofreading my comments better.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:16 PM
I thought nothing of it at the time, but Sanchize did mention he had to take his shoes off at his J-E-T-S dinner/interview…
/not confirmed by me
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:17 PM
Still upset I didn’t just stay in the cab and talk football with him all night
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:18 PM
I have a terrible feeling he’s going to be really good. He was never going to be the starter over Murray, but he impressed when he was hear. Just keep him away from hot waitresses.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:18 PM
Rick and Hearty soup sounds… interesting.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:18 PM
Today there’s a whole new meaning to “So…tell us about the shoes.”
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:18 PM
now we know that working on “body language” meant taking off the cleets and dirty socks while rex ate a fucking snack.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:20 PM
I can’t eat the canned “meat”. for some reason the styrofoam chicken doesn’t bother me, but the whole “meat” thing scares the shit out of me.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:20 PM
I mean, feet are gross.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:20 PM
Holt should have Washington practicing recovering fumbles. That’s their best chance. One of these games Nebraska’s not going to recover most of the 8 fumbles they have in a game – possibly. I know it’s a small sample size but in the 2 games I’ve seen Nebraska, they fumbled about 13 times. I’d guess they fumbled at least 8 times against Oklahoma. Luckily, they recovered most of them.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:20 PM
I am a firm believer that any coach who employs a 3-3-5 base defense should be fired for being a bitch. Has that defense ever been good?
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:21 PM
/shoots self
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:21 PM
They fumble the shit out of the ball. It’s embarrassing. I don’t know what they are coaching them to do, but it isn’t working.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:22 PM
What the hell is this all about?
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:23 PM
I have two toes that are webbed together. Rex wouldn’t touch my shit.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:23 PM
I really need to start proofreading my comments better.
me too, i feel dumb half the time
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:23 PM
the “steak” reminds me of the stuff that’s in the Fancy Feast commercials that the fluffy white cat eats.
whatever. I ate it.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:23 PM
Tom Coughlin.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:24 PM
Too early on Nick Holt. Period. He was left with a major, major shitshow by Willingham’s staff.
Plus, as Cassino alluded, he’s doing a good job on the recruiting trail.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:25 PM
For some reason I wish I didn’t know that.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:26 PM
You walk on them all day and they are confined to a small space.. they sweat and they stink. And guys feet with hair? YECHHHHH.
VOMIT
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:26 PM
sanders would swim circles around anyone in here.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:26 PM
I don’t know, there are some fucking weird d00ds out there. I mean, the kind of guy who would enjoy putting videos of his wife’s feet on YouTube may be the kind of guy to go for amphibian toes.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:27 PM
No no, CJ… I mean, why is everyone talking about feet today?
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:28 PM
not a fan of hobbits, eh?
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:28 PM
bsanders is a mermaid. or is it merman?
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:29 PM
While I do think Chuck Long is overpaid, it’s probably not fair to compare this years KU offense to that of the past 3. A lot changed with graduation and early draft entries. But you’re right to compare it to his own past offenses.
Nice work, duffy.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:29 PM
There is a good bit of talent in Washington, too. There is big time potential at Washington.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:29 PM
coming soon: the most overpaid bloggers voted on by football coaches around the nation, football reporters and some computer…..when will a overpaid blogger tournament be a reality? I bet Mark Cuban can figure it out
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:30 PM
I have two toes that are webbed together.
Graham James approves.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:31 PM
I cant say.. top secret.. TBL says its not worthy of a post
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:31 PM
Can we even get a post about Rex Ryan saying “To be honest, and I get it, I know you need to ask and all that stuff, it’s a personal matter and I’m really not going to discuss it, OK.”?
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:31 PM
Oh dude… too far. Too far. That’s just gross.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:31 PM
MERMAN…..MERMAN!
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:31 PM
This times a million. That’s why I don’t understand how anyone could have a foot fetish. Yuck.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:32 PM
that is what I kind of thought as well. which makes it that much more amazing that they have been so shitty for as long as they have been.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:33 PM
PFT with – for once – something funny:
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:33 PM
I mean, why is everyone talking about feet today?
good question, lets change the subject.
anyone have a favorite scotch to suggest? just got into it, and i dont know shit.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:33 PM
Were they ever on probation and lose schollies?
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:33 PM
it’s a personal matter that i put on youtube. bright guy that dude is. will footgate distract the jets against chicago?*
*if that is brought up thousands of time before the game i’ll be shocked
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:34 PM
Anything that you think is gross or disgusting, there are people out there who are turned on by it.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:34 PM
Much like NY Jets football.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:35 PM
Thank you for your help, Captain Obvious.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:35 PM
Like those guys who pay half ton women to post videos of them eating food on the internet
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:35 PM
And the staff is keeping it home. Whereas the previous regime let guys like Taylor Mays and Jonathan Stewart get away, Sark and Holt have gotten just about every big Washington recruit with the exception of Jake Heaps (who they never really had a shot with). Best fanbase on the west coast, tradition second only to USC, stadium renovation to start soon… yes, we’re very excited about the future round these parts.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:36 PM
isn’t the kid from bad santa named Herman Merman?
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:36 PM
Glenlivet 12 is my standard, Dewar’s 12 is my well at the home bar. Stay away from the white label Dewar’s. If you can afford Macallan, the 12 is quite good. Not a Glenfiddich fan nor Johnny Black/Red. The Green is pretty good, Gold is solid, Blue is overpriced as hell but quite tasty.
Binny’s, which is the giant chain of liquor stores around here, does a Scotch tasting monthly. I’d suggest finding a tasting event and going.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:37 PM
Or the guys that would pay thousands of dollars to have SG stomp on their balls.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:37 PM
And can I just say… Scarlett Johansonn. YOU FUCKING BITCH.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:37 PM
thanks for the explanation, makes sense now. I would love to see a game at Husky Stadium.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:38 PM
Cassino: How do you think the Holiday Bowl plays out?
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:38 PM
price limit?
personally i like johnny walker red/black for drinking scotch, dewars reserve 12 is good. tomatin is alright. talisker i enjoy from time to time.
glenfiddich is very good stuff.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:38 PM
Literally.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:39 PM
It looks badass on TV. I’m sure it’s so much better in person, too.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:39 PM
really? thats amazing
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:39 PM
!!!!!!!!!
I shall never recover.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:39 PM
Johnny Walker Red is not a bad place to start. It’s a blend and pretty smooth. Good way to cut your teeth before jumping into the single malts.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:40 PM
My suggestion is that you stick with the fine products of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:40 PM
anyone have a scotch fetish?
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:40 PM
Washington need to keep guys like Lincoln Kennedy’s kid who was 6’9″ 295 at 15 with an enormous wingspan – I read that they expected him to be 7 feet. UW has had terrible line play for years – they have 2 good true frosh O-linemen and 1 good frosh D-lineman. They have a ways to go still on the line.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:41 PM
What did she do? Did she cheat on Ryan? Give me the scoop!
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:41 PM
But then he wouldn’t able to drink a fine Jack Daniels product.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:41 PM
Damn you CJ, I told you that in private.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:42 PM
good advice. also recommend drinking on the rocks or just a tiny little bit of water to help cut the strength. there is some very good stuff out there, and if you ever get to a casino or cruise ship take advantage of the great whiskey prices and try whatever you want.
i had a double of johnny blue label for 30 bucks, and it was full.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:43 PM
CJ – my wife made me watch The Proposal with her last weekend. I did not appreciate the look in her eye every time RR was on the screen.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:43 PM
I like pouring it over women’s feet…preferably both are aged 18 years
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:46 PM
its even better when the toes have hair.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:47 PM
The quotes coming out are that she treated him badly, didnt make him a priority, and that he was way more invested in the marriage than her. Currently he is “beyond sad and depressed” and she is “disconnected and disaffected”. Cold hearted bitch., not even the most beautiful man from Canada was good enough for her.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:47 PM
Whiskey Rocks. Best.Invention.Ever.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:49 PM
Swill that isn’t allowed in my house.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:49 PM
As soon as I saw your comment I did a little search on yahoo and read about her being a bitch to him. I know Alanis got married and is prego (or had the baby already) but I wonder if they’ll run into each other and get back together. I love RR. I think I love him more than JT.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:50 PM
Jack Single Barrell is pretty solid.
/then again, I’m a fan of regular JD as well
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:50 PM
I too wasn’t aware that a fine JD product existed.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:50 PM
If the main part of your argument that RR should be fired is that he hired GERG and the defense sucks, shouldn’t you be a fan of GERG getting the boot and RR being forced to hire a DC who gets full control? That seems to make a lot more sense than firing RR when he finally has that offense moving towards world-destroying levels. It is also a better idea than throwing a ton of money at a guy who threw the program under the bus so he could get more media attention at Stanford.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:51 PM
Bueller – Kennedy’s kid will be a Husky. His high school has always been a direct pipeline to UW. The the 1 good frosh d lineman you mentioned (I assume you mean Patoa’e) went there, as did the Kearse brothers and Reggie Williams, among others.
Husker – I don’t think we win, but it’ll be closer than the first meeting. When this staff was at USC they always did extremely well preparing for bowl games, and I think UW definitely has more motivation, but the problem is the team still has shit for depth and a lot of the talent is young. I’ll be interested to see if the emergence of the run game late in the season was a real thing or an artifact of playing UCLA and WSU.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:52 PM
wait, Alanis isn’t a dude?
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:52 PM
the green label is alright, i prefer gentleman jack and single barrell though.
in the summer i do like JD on the rocks while reading a good book though.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:52 PM
I’m very disappointed in RR. For shame.
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:54 PM
RR is both RichRod and Ryan Reynolds in this post. It’s starting to get confusing
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:55 PM
cut.it.out.
/dave coulier’d
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:55 PM
Why because his wife made him miserable?
I’M DISAPPOINTED IN YOU!
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:59 PM
*Furiously nods in approval*
December 22nd, 2010 at 1:00 PM
Cassino – I actually meant the guy from Hawaii (I think) Jamora (?) or something like that. Very impressed with him – and Kohler and Porter on the O-Line. I heard Potoa is good but I haven’t noticed him.
It shows how bad a spot they are in that they had to play all those guys. I agree about Lakes guys but there coach seemed upset about Middleton and Kennedy’s kid (Banner?) but he never really met Kennedy – both his parents went to Wazzu.

(puts on semi sexist hat)
He’s the older man in the relationship. He needs to stop pouting and being a little bitch. So the younger girl that you left Alanis for isn’t everything she cracked up to be? BOO FUCKING HOO. Be a man and take the upper hand. Don’t go around sobbing and saying “oh my wife makes my life miserable”. Stop being a pansy. Or, at least admit that you were over her and you started to give it to Blake Lively.

Jay Paterno. I don’t know what he makes, but it’s too much to coach Division 1 football.

No, my argument is that, in three years, he has hired two coordinators, changed the system three times at his own behest and Michigan’s defense has become progressively worse each season. If my head coach has to be forced to clear out his staff and to not meddle on one side of the ball, the coach is the problem. He hired all the assistants that undermined two coordinators and the system is his defensive system that hasn’t worked.

Saying that he changed the system is a gross over-simplification of what has gone on. He hired Schafer because he thought he had someone who could do what Casteel had done for him at WVU, with the system that his staff knew. When it was obvious there were personality conflicts, he removed the DC, thinking that his guys were the right guys as they had been so successful with him at WVU. His mistake with GERG, aside from hiring him, was forcing the 3-3-5 on him. What we have since learned is that Casteel covered up a lot of deficiencies in the staff. Luckily, RR was smart enough to get rid of Hopson after the last season, and there was some improvement in the LB play.
The defense under GERG hasn’t really changed. They still run out of the base 3-3-5. What you see during the game are slight variations, for the most part. When there are 4 lineman, 80% of the time it is a LB dropping down and then Kovacs moves from a safety and plays a hybrid role.
So, unless he can get Casteel or someone else who knows the 3-3-5, he needs to just give up any control over the staff on that side of the ball. He, like many HCs, isn’t terribly comfortable with both sides of the ball. When he was at WVU, he had someone he completely trusted to handle that work. It is rather obvious he has been searching for that same thing and simply hasn’t found it.
Good work completely ignoring the end of my first point.
