Derek Dooley Grounded For Two Weeks for Accidentally Posting on Recruit’s Facebook Wall
Derek Dooley, Tennessee’s always-interesting football coach, slipped up while communicating with a recruit on Facebook, and as punishment, the NCAA sent him to bed without any dessert and took away his Nintendo for two weeks.
Dooley had been “permissibly communicating” with O’Leary through the e-mail function on Facebook. When he received an e-mail from O’Leary on June 3, Dooley, using a Motorola Droid, mistakenly sent his message to O’Leary’s wall, which, depending on how O’Leary configured his privacy settings, could be viewed by all 500 million Facebook members.
After the NCAA became aware of the snafu, Dooley was prevented from recruiting O’Leary for two weeks. It’s like they grounded him! This cracks me up:
Dooley’s message was not “a typical wall posting one would make on Facebook” and “is more consistent with a private, personal e-mail,” according to a list of mitigating factors in the report.
Dooley was instructed not to use his phone to respond to Facebook messages and was set to receive “technical instruction in the use of the Facebook application on his mobile phone.” Education of NCAA bylaw 13.4.1.2 was also provided to his entire staff.
The NCAA, what a circus. A two week grounding and teaching a coach how to use a mobile app? What a joke.
Oh, and O’Leary is no longer considering the Vols. [Go Vols Extra]

Man, coaches are that in tune with technology? Crazy. Sending facebook messages through mobile apps. Fucking Genius.

I don’t know what a typical facebook post is. I’ve seen some fucked up shit on people’s walls.
December 21st, 2010 at 1:28 PM
What is really crazy about this? There is a clear black and white rule, you can’t post on a recruit’s facebook wall. If he is using a device that utilizes facebook, he needs to learn how to use it properly. Your out of place outrage is laughable in this case.

There are tons of reasons to take shots at the NCAA and its rulebook but this is not one of them.

I’ve asked the guy at the Bylaw Blog this question, but he never answered me. Cleet, maybe you can shed some light on it. Since it’s impermissible for boosters to have contact with a recruit, is it out of bounds for a booster to communicate with a recruit via twitter? Let’s say a guy that writes for a team’s SB Nation blog is following an incoming recruit on twitter. If that blogger has purchased season tickets, he likely meets the definition of booster in the eyes of the NCAA. Is it a violation for the blogger to tweet back and forth with the recruit?

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tennessee get the death penalty for this.

Actually, I bet a shirtless and chest-painted Bruce Pearl would have been the way to go. Don’t want to come on too strong or this O’Leary kid might think Dooley is desperate.

Lefty, if someone falls under the definition of a booster, then they are subject to the same rules of recruiting as the coach and staff of the institution. Regarding twitter, it is like Facebook. You can send private messages (direct in the case of twitter) back and forth but you cannot send public messages, such as replies or naming the recruits handle in his messages.
The case you point out of a blogger is a vary tenuous line to walk and I doubt the NCAA has even considered that situation fully. But then again it is hard as hell to keep trakc of what boosters, especially for a huge school are doing.

I honestly have no memory of when it happened, TST. I know he was cursing at somebody in one post and I think it was a separate comment where he said anybody who wants to correct him should send it in an email instead of putting it in the comments. It might have even been the same comment. It was right around the time when Sparty got banned and TBL said he knew who the commenters were that he was going to ban next. Specific posts to point you towards? No clue

It was a CFB post last week I believe, a discussion about the proper use of “literally & figuratively” devolved quickly.

Thanks cleet. Somehow, somewhere, I came across this kid on twitter that’s coming to Tech to play football (almost certainly from another fan, or maybe one of the Tech beat writers I follow). Then, I saw somebody RT something this kid said, about needing some new Tech gear. I half jokingly replied to the guy “NOOOOOO! Don’t need any secondary violations!”, but it made me wonder. Since one of the people that follows this kid is a season ticket holder, which requires a donation, he meets the definition of a booster, and, like you pointed out, some public contact it out of bounds. I think there’s a lot about social media recruiting practices and regulations that is going to need to be refined over the next few years.

Pardon me while I channel JPQ here a minute…
I can deal with autoplay ads. Billy Wagner usually gets pulled. Trying to get me to buy video games is no big deal and ad-blocker saves most of that stuff anyways. A mobile site would be nice, but this place still works fine in a standard mobile browser.
But this moderation nonsense that is taking place without rhyme or reason is beyond frustrating. If we were aware of what caused things to slip into the filter, that’d be great. However, we have no clue. Please get it fixed or inform us why we’re being moderated. Please and thank you, FSV staff.

Been done with the family since right after Thanksgiving. I still have to buy a White Elephant gift. I haven’t seen anything funny enough yet.
