Poor Bowl Ticket Sales Will Cause Schools to Lose Millions
Despite being the most magical of magical experiences, bowl games have not captivated college football fans this season. Schools around the country are having trouble selling out their ticket allotments, even those that traditionally “travel well.” With thousands of tickets unsold, universities could be paying six or seven figures for the privilege of sending the football team to one of these romantic exhibitions.
UConn has been the oft-cited example. It’s a non-traditional football school with a small fan base, travelling across the country. The school has sold only 4,500 of its mandatory 17,500 allotment, leaving it with a seven-figure loss on the remaining 13,000 tickets. Stanford, in a similar situation, has sold less than half of its 17,500 allotment. These situations are extreme, but similarly underwhelming sales are hardly abnormal.
Small schools are struggling. FIU has sold less than 1,000 of its tickets for the prestigious Little Caesars Pizza Bowl in Detroit. Tulsa has sold only 800 of its 10,000 allotment for the Hawaii Bowl. Even with less of a commute, Fresno State only sold 250 of its 3,000 allotment for the Humanitarian Bowl.
Many traditional football powers are struggling to sell tickets as well. Nebraska still has 3,900 tickets from its 11,000 Holiday Bowl allotment available. For comparison, 20,000 Nebraska fans travelled to Washington for the regular season game. Iowa has only sold 5,900 tickets for the Insight Bowl. West Virginia has sold only 4,400 of its 11,000 tickets for the Champs Sports Bowl.
Even in an elite bowl game, Virginia Tech has sold just 6,500 of it’s 17,500 tickets for the Orange Bowl. They could face losses similar to the 2009 game, $1.77 million. After taking a $1 million hit at the 2009 Fiesta Bowl, Ohio State changed its ticket policy to sell out its allotment, by opening sales to the general public. The Ohio State section will be filled, by a significant number of Arkansas fans.
Navy did sell out its 20,000 allotment for the Poinsettia Bowl, because the Poinsettia Bowl is played in San Diego, the home port of the Pacific Fleet.
Bowls transfer the financial liability of unprofitable games to universities, by forcing them to buy minimum numbers of tickets and hotel room packages at inflated prices. Consequently, students and taxpayers are paying millions to subsidize mediocre football games that generate little interest. Money that should be used for improvements, salaries and research is paying lavish entertainment costs and six-figure administrator salaries. Many of these programs were already gouging students just to meet their regular season operating costs.
Athletic directors attending the Fiesta Frolic and coaches receiving six-figure bonuses love the bowl system. However, those footing the bill are far less enamored. If Mark Cuban and ESPN can come up with a post-season option that will funnel millions into the universities rather than siphon millions out, the schools will listen.

Poor Rusty, beaten to death in front of us all.
December 20th, 2010 at 12:35 PM
I’m choosing to abstain from this but I will respond to the Iowa portion:
It’s play on a Tuesday night 3 days after Christmas and the team is missing 8 key players due to a drug scandal.
December 20th, 2010 at 12:35 PM
RIP the International Bowl.
December 20th, 2010 at 12:35 PM
I heard only 12 Miami fans are going to be there for the Sun Bowl.
December 20th, 2010 at 12:35 PM
What does Lebron think about all of this?
December 20th, 2010 at 12:36 PM
a playoff will solve this! every game in the NCAA basketball tournament sells out, right?
December 20th, 2010 at 12:37 PM
So you’re telling me people from Miami don’t want to travel to Detroit the day after Christmas for the Shitty Pizza Bowl? I’m shocked!
December 20th, 2010 at 12:37 PM
Also missing the “In this Economy?!” tag.
December 20th, 2010 at 12:38 PM
Blame the schools for it, FIU can barely draw a couple thousand at home…so it shouldn’t be unexpected that they can’t draw much for the Little Ceasar’s Bowl.
WVU just basically canned their coach.
Then look at the POSITIVE stories in this. Louisville sold 10,000+ tickets to the Beef O’ Brady’s Bowl…Nevada 15,000 to the Fight Hunger Bowl…etc.

December 20th, 2010 at 12:38 PM
Leave south Florida for Detroit in winter? I don’t blame them.
December 20th, 2010 at 12:39 PM
No no no – fans are just saving their $ for when they have to travel to 3 or 4 games to win the championship.

Watch out AL Central, the Tribe have signed Austin Kearns!
December 20th, 2010 at 12:41 PM
I think V Tech people all went for the ACCCG in Charlotte because it was closer and cheaper than going down to the Orange Bowl. They were playing for a conference title as well. It’s simple math really, a lot of the fans can’t afford it and those that can don’t want to spend it.
December 20th, 2010 at 12:41 PM
Akron likes it. Cleveland doesn’t.

Love watching those first games on the Thursday of March Madness with about 50 people in the stands.
December 20th, 2010 at 12:42 PM
I’ll be leaving north Florida for Detroit and will be in attendance at the Motor City Bowl. It is great fun.
December 20th, 2010 at 12:44 PM
Upsetting that pic doesn’t have a “Spencer” caption.
December 20th, 2010 at 12:46 PM
I did my part and bought a Rose Bowl ticket
December 20th, 2010 at 12:46 PM
That’s a whole ‘nother issue, Clown. If the NCAA would put the games in the places that are interested, this wouldn’t be a problem. But, year after year, the NCAA continues to put 1st and 2nd round games where no one bothers to attend.
Columbus will have it for the 2nd time next year. There won’t be an empty seat at the start of any of the 3 sessions.

December 20th, 2010 at 12:48 PM
yes!! Like last year in St. Louis for the fucking Midwest regional final when there were thousand of empty seats. I had extra tickets and had trouble giving them away for the final. Listen, the narrative has been set. TBL and Duffy will continue on with this, logic be damned. they have no use for your logic. None. they are just gonna keep beating this drum and pretending everyone else feels the same way. The market dictates. When shit posts like this continue to get PAGEVIEWS!!! they will continue to write them. Profit above all. I have a little respect for that. At least the motive is transparent.
December 20th, 2010 at 12:48 PM
Historically, that hasn’t been the case:

December 20th, 2010 at 12:49 PM
Apparently UGA has had preliminary discussions with OSU, Michigan, and Notre Dame about future home and home series.
December 20th, 2010 at 12:50 PM
Historically that game has been in Jacksonville and Tampa. It’s like putting the Big XII title game in Los Angeles.
December 20th, 2010 at 12:51 PM
TBL: Write 300 posts on how The Marlins got $400 million from one of the poorest cities in the country to build a stadium that will be vacant in year 2. THAT is a lot worse than this pittance.
Because I said that I would.
December 20th, 2010 at 12:51 PM
Where’s the proof Duffy? Because this reads otherwise…
December 20th, 2010 at 12:53 PM
But seriously, a playoff lets teams settle it on the field.
/watches as Rams/49ers get a playoff spot over the Giants or Packers
December 20th, 2010 at 12:53 PM

December 20th, 2010 at 12:56 PM

Why do you have to make fun of the Pirates today?
December 20th, 2010 at 12:57 PM
I’m hoping the geezer tries to play and the Bears can kick his ass one last time.
December 20th, 2010 at 12:57 PM
contract 4 baseball teams, maybe 2 NBA teams, at least 10 bowl games
I find the bowl game stuff a lot less strange then this insistence that the NBA is more economically viable than MLB.
December 20th, 2010 at 12:58 PM
This. Suck it, Butters.
December 20th, 2010 at 12:59 PM
Now contraction of some bowl games is a reasonable start. There is no need for things like the BBVA Compass Bowl, etc. That would have been a much more reasonable argument.
December 20th, 2010 at 12:59 PM
Baseball teams all make money…why contract?
December 20th, 2010 at 12:59 PM
This. First year in Charlotte this year and the V-Tech people responded.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:00 PM
We’re now officially at the point where we can mad lib an entire Duffy post.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:01 PM
Can’t get rid of the Pirates. PNC Park is too glorious to be empty.
This.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:01 PM
Wait, what, where?
/NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
December 20th, 2010 at 1:02 PM
I know you don’t care about hockey but the NHL needs to lose 6 teams as well. I also think the NBA could disappear more than 2 teams but I think that will take care of itself if they have a work stoppage.
Other than Pittsburgh (we know your opinion there), what MLB teams do you see being contracted?
December 20th, 2010 at 1:02 PM
I was compelled to quote this for some reason.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:02 PM
A playoff system using the current bowl system would not increase attendance.. it would probably hurt it even more. Not many can afford to travel cross country multiple times in order to follow their team in the playoffs. That’s why you have to have playoff games at the team with the better record’s home stadium. Then you could have the “super bowl” in one of the BCS sites. While the thought of a home playoff game in Camp Randall in December is amazing, I realize that this will never happen.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:02 PM
I once saw Nikita Koloff signing for midwest flood victims in a Walmart. I was too scared to approach him, especially because he looked lonely. So my dad did, and got me a photo. But it was a photo of Vladimir Koloff, signed by Nikita. Which makes it a collector’s item. Sadly, it burned in my car with all of my worldly possessions in 2002.
/felt like sharing.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:03 PM
Did you see the ratings of LA/BOS? They killed last years SF/TX World Series and PHIL/TB from 3 years ago.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:03 PM
Garland sets the trap…
December 20th, 2010 at 1:03 PM
a) arkansas fans don’t get to see BCS games often because their team sucks
b) this is being presumptive that OSU fans won’t buy the available tix
December 20th, 2010 at 1:03 PM
NU-OU would have sold out the Big 12 title game if it were in LA.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:04 PM
POPULARITY ISN’T ONLY JUDGED BY TV RATINGS!!!!!!!! How many fucking times do we have to have this argument?
/lay off me, i’m starving
December 20th, 2010 at 1:04 PM
I actually like them a little bit this year.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:05 PM
I like my plan for MLB. Move the Dodgers back to NY, contract down to just the Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, and Dodgers. Watch the profits roll in.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:06 PM
I know you don’t care about hockey but the NHL needs to lose 6 teams as well
Completely ignoring the options for relocation. Panthers, Hurricanes, Coyotes, Thrashers, Lightning, Predators. Then realign the divisions and bring back the classic names.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:06 PM
The ratings have no bearing on whether or not the NBA or any sport makes money. Those TV contracts are already in place. They don’t negotiate every year so the NBA doesn’t go to ABC and say “See! told you we’re popular, give us money!” When the contract is up they may be able to ask for more but that won’t increase the bottom line in any given season.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:06 PM
It seems like the economic situation of a sport directly correlates with how much TBL likes it. I wonder if he could start thinking better thoughts about America.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:06 PM
Honestly I disagree. I think there are enough good players to where legit NHLers would be out of jobs if there was contraction. I do think that they should either go to Olympic ice or play 4 on 4 though.
also, Jeremy Morin baby!
December 20th, 2010 at 1:06 PM
That stadium is the only reason why we haven’t reached The Marlins territory when it comes to atendence.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:07 PM
Let’s say it’s like putting the Big XII game in Cleveland, then, dead in the middle of a passionate fanbase for a rival conference.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:08 PM
Easy there killer… St. Bear had some sarcasm gravy on that one.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:09 PM
Ok, I’m not going to Cleveland.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:09 PM
We will have this argument until you agree with TBL and duffy. Otherwise, you’re wrong. Even though it’s supposed to be an opinion, and those are not supposed to be right or wrong.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:09 PM
“First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then they moderate you, then you’re banned.”
December 20th, 2010 at 1:10 PM

December 20th, 2010 at 1:10 PM
I would keep one of the Florida squads and boot the Devils or Islanders, but that will never happen.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:11 PM
Honestly I disagree. I think there are enough good players to where legit NHLers would be out of jobs if there was contraction. I do think that they should either go to Olympic ice or play 4 on 4 though.
In a perfect world, I’d like to see 4 teams contracted. Look at the rosters across the league, each team has 2 or 3 guys that shouldn’t be in the league.
I’d rather not see them go to Olympic sized ice either, watch some games from the Euro leagues and you’ll understand why.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:12 PM
The Devils couldn’t sell half of their arena when they were the best team in the conference. Fuck those assholes, I’m glad they finally suck.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:12 PM
Still think I’d get rid of the Blue Jackets before the Predators.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:13 PM
Contract the Blackhawks so Souvy can’t tweet the shit out of their games.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:13 PM
/plays Star Spangled Banner
//dusts off top of podium
December 20th, 2010 at 1:14 PM
Two games this weekend, only one tweet. That one tweet was to let you know I was there via FourSquare. I also just got 15% off my entire lunch thanks to FourSquare so suck it haters.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:14 PM
Fetch is a college fan, lots of Olympic rinks there. And, it’s unpossible to expand the rinks.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:14 PM
Not a fan of the Olympic ice. I wouldn’t mind seeing the NHL ice widened to 90′ but I think 98′ changes the North American game in a way that is not for the better. I also think dumping the 120 worst players in the league would do wonders for the game but it’s one of those things you can’t really prove without trying it.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:15 PM
I would keep one of the Florida squads and boot the Devils or Islanders, but that will never happen.
The problem with Florida is that there isn’t really much opportunity for growth. Islanders fans should frame Charles Wang for a felony. Fuck the Devils.
SG – Columbus is a good market, they just need a winner. I’d like to see Nashville succeed, attendance is way up this year so far.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:16 PM
You better watch it or Strudwick is going to come to your house and ask to shovel your driveway when he’s out of a job. You can’t have that on your conscience.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:16 PM

I’m still extremely jealous that you keep managing this.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:17 PM

Both Florida teams need to go. This was the scene at the Sabres/Panthers game on Friday night. Out to give you an idea of who attends Panther games

Darren Rovell from cnbc tweeted this over the weekend: “Bowl attendance for 1st 3 games averaging 28,344, up 3.8% from those games last year.”
seems like someone cares about these games…
December 20th, 2010 at 1:18 PM
They do, but it’s not like they sell out regularly…
December 20th, 2010 at 1:18 PM

Solid hardcore base, but they aren’t attracting the casual eyes.
You better watch it or Strudwick is going to come to your house and ask to shovel your driveway when he’s out of a job. You can’t have that on your conscience.
He’s played almost 650 career games, means he’s qualified for the pension. He’ll never have to work a day after he retires if he so chooses.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:19 PM
Just walk outside and look for the orange “special” icon at places around you. You always get some sort of discount, just have to show it to the cashier. Went to a pretzel bread sandwich shop. Food was awesome, they sell Kettle brand chips and my entire lunch was $7.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:19 PM
This cannot be repeated enough, because I was floored when I realized that TBL thinks that there is a right and a wrong side to the CFB playoff argument.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:19 PM
i don’t think that’s the problem with florida.
the problem with florida is that the entire state is full retards, old people, cubans and greedy narcissists.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:21 PM
1) Ballsy move, taking a picture of a bunch of dudes pissing and not getting your ass kicked for it.
2) The Panthers are in the middle of nowhere. Sadly, it’s one of the nicest arenas in the USA
December 20th, 2010 at 1:22 PM
The key to really establishing the sport is to have it at a grassroots level in the market. Dallas has done pretty well with this. I’ve been lead to believe that Carolina and Tampa are making some small progress and California is in good shape. Other markets like Phoenix, Atlanta and Nashville are making next to no progress at that level.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:22 PM
And me.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:23 PM
Watch out AL Central, the Tribe have signed Austin Kearns!
I actually like them a little bit this year.
I believe their “adjusted team VORP” is too low….
December 20th, 2010 at 1:23 PM
Crazy talk, SG. The base of fans is in Columbus. They are just tired of watching a loser (and watching the team get screwed – see Saturday night as a prime example).
Nashville has much less base to work from. Of course, Tampa, Florida, Phoenix, Atlanta and Carolina have even less
December 20th, 2010 at 1:24 PM
They’re the only ones that play in that arena too, right? Pretty much totally publicly financed if I’m not mistaken. JPQ paid for part of that arena. There’s Huizenga for you.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:25 PM
That comment came out all kinds of wrong. Basically, I was trying to say that for the game to be sustainable in a non-traditional hockey market, you need to have kids playing minor hockey to make the sport part of the local culture. Some U.S. markets are succeeding at this while some continue to suck.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:26 PM
Mason has been pulled more than any netminder in hockey in the last calendar year. Start by getting a center for Nash and then address this.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:27 PM
1) Ballsy move, taking a picture of a bunch of dudes pissing and not getting your ass kicked for it
it was on someone’s twitter feed. I didn’t even bother going to the game
2) The Panthers are in the middle of nowhere. Sadly, it’s one of the nicest arenas in the USA
actually, the middle of nowhere is where any real hockey fans live down here: the NW suburbs (mostly relos from up North). Also, Palm Beach county residents can get there fairly easily
December 20th, 2010 at 1:28 PM
the problem with florida is that the entire state is full retards, old people, cubans and greedy narcissists and Tebow apologists.
And me./fixed
December 20th, 2010 at 1:29 PM
Not so sure that’s the case with Atlanta. Pretty solid junior hockey in the Atlanta area.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:29 PM
2) The Panthers are in the middle of nowhere. Sadly, it’s one of the nicest arenas in the USA
Fantastic facility. Same issue in Phoenix and to a lesser extent Ottawa.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:33 PM
Atlanta = Apathetic fans?
December 20th, 2010 at 1:33 PM
@Geeezeus: another pic of crowd on Friday night
/not sure when it was taken in terms of gametime, but they said on twitter to make sure you saw the crowd & how bad it was
December 20th, 2010 at 1:34 PM
That’s good to hear. I was relying on what I had been told by some minor hockey guys from the U.S. that I’ve run into at tournaments. They run regional super teams and are always searching for talent. Might just be a case of the Atlanta market not yet producing high-end talent but that will come with time. I was told that the Carolina Jr Hurricanes just recently had their first NCAA scholarship player, which is kind of a big deal for them.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:35 PM
HA
December 20th, 2010 at 1:35 PM
Was it another one of their ‘dress like an empty seat’ promotions? That’s fucking abysmal.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:36 PM
/not sure when it was taken in terms of gametime, but they said on twitter to make sure you saw the crowd & how bad it was
Sad, when there are markets that would actually support a team.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:38 PM
Where was this? Panthers game? Or in Atlanta?
December 20th, 2010 at 1:39 PM
SG – Panthers.
December 20th, 2010 at 1:40 PM
‘We’re helping FIU,’ said John McElwain, a Sun Belt Conference spokesman…The funding comes from the Sun Belt’s share of the nearly $25 million in BCS money
“It’s gonna be plus or minus $20,000 or $30,000,” Tulsa athletic director Bubba Cunningham said. “That’s typically how we go into a bowl thinking.”
The other articles dont mention any actual losses. So, in summary, the BCS basically pays for these bowls, and most schools go in knowing they will break even. And for the millionth time, no one is forcing these schools to go, they are more than welcome to say no.
December 20th, 2010 at 2:11 PM
Sorry I missed this one.
Hey, remember when Cuban was going to buy all those sports teams? That didn’t work either.
December 20th, 2010 at 2:24 PM
I shocked…SHOCKED that this topic is being discussed here.
Lefty: I saw an article on UGA trying to get a home and home with either OSU, PSU, Mich or ND. That would be fucking awesome. Any of them really, but I’d love an OSU-UGA home and home.
