Geno Auriemma, Insufferable as Ever, Defends the UConn Women’ 88-game Winning Streak
Geno Auriemma Remains an Insufferable Douche: “All the men who love women’s basketball are excited, and all the miserable bastards who follow men’s basketball and don’t want us to break the record are all here because they are pissed. So that’s the way it is … If we were breaking a women’s record, everybody would go: ‘Aren’t those girls nice. Just give them two paragraphs in USA Today or give them one line on the bottom of ESPN, and let’s send them back where they belong in the kitchen.’ But because we are breaking a men’s record, we have a lot of people paying attention.” Can’t wait until Baylor beats Connecticut in the Final 4. Insufferable douche or not, hard to find fault or inaccuracy with a single thing he said there. Good for him for being honest.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:02 AM
people write volumes about how barry bonds’ record is hollow, yet we’re about to let a women’s bball team, one with 75% of the top talent in the country on it who’s backups would probably be a 1 seed, have a rightful claim to this record?
throw an asterisk on this one too.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:03 AM
Agreed.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:04 AM
Uhmm…you’re not breaking a men’s record, Gino. You’re just moving the meter on your women’s record.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:04 AM
I see where you’re coming from with this, but you really can’t relate Barry Bonds and The UConn team.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:04 AM
He’s definitely a douche, but he’s a self-made douche. The story about where Geno came from is pretty incredible.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:04 AM
He’s probably correct, but I also think the significance of this event was reflected in the timing. The game began at 2 pm on an NFL Sunday, so even ESPN knew that most sports fans didn’t really care.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:05 AM
Did Geno thank the refs for the home cookin’ when they played Baylor this year?
December 20th, 2010 at 11:05 AM
sure i can…bonds’ tits were the biggest of any of em.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:05 AM
Me thinks if he just would’ve left this part out, the headline on this entry might be different. But that’s just me. Thinking. And possibly masturbating.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:05 AM
agreed
agreed
December 20th, 2010 at 11:06 AM
I don’t know why, but this made me laugh.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:06 AM
It’s a pretty impressive record, but to compare it to men’s basketball is ridiculous.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:07 AM
We don’t. It’s the same reason I don’t follow minor league sports. Sports fans want to watch the best athletes/teams compete. When it’s a big deal when one of your players “dunks”, don’t expect the rest of us to take you seriously.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:07 AM
I don’t see how this is all that different from some Division III running back from Mount Piccolo becoming the NCAA’s all-time leading rusher. Technically, it’s a record. Whether the mainstream sports media and fans choose to recognize it as such is up to their own discretion.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:08 AM
Well played
December 20th, 2010 at 11:08 AM
Well would you look at that, Geno was exactly right in what he said about you people.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
And since we’re comparing them to arbitrary winning streaks, I was more impressed when they passed the 1972 Dolphins.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
Pretty much sums it up perfectly. We always ask for honest thoughts, and when we get them and don’t like them we bitch and moan.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
This quote is about Geno promoting Geno. Nothing more.
He’s not breaking the men’s record. It’s silly to compare the two.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:10 AM
Hey, did you just make a Danny Woodhead joke?!
December 20th, 2010 at 11:11 AM
One of the most pointless records in all of sports. That’s saying something.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:11 AM
Don’t hold your breath.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:11 AM
Ding, ding.
Haha, is he the all-time leading rusher? If so, I honestly had no idea, I just always assume it’s a Mount Union guy because they’ve been killing people for ages.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:11 AM
This does not fem-pute…don’t the men know that the women’s strong fundamentals makes for their inability to dunk?!?!
December 20th, 2010 at 11:11 AM
I’m more impressed that Geno’s girls broke DiMaggio’s 56.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:12 AM
I’m amongst the few that actually likes women’s hoops, volleyball, and soccer. That said, the record shouldn’t even be mentioned anywhere close to the UCLA men. The talent disparity in women’s hoop has been around as long as the game itself. With the men’s game, we don’t see the consistent blowouts that you do in women’s high school or college hoops. I don’t recall high school boys state tourney’s annually having a couple of 94-4 final scores. We do every year in Ohio, and this is with having 4 different tournament divisions.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:12 AM
Geno is right.
Fo show! Geno’s schedule is probably much tougher than UCLA’s back in the day.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:12 AM
UW-Whitewater owns that ass
December 20th, 2010 at 11:13 AM
Jeremy Roenick is on Price is Right right now!!
December 20th, 2010 at 11:14 AM
The Clintons did what, now?
December 20th, 2010 at 11:14 AM
Try to control yourself.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:14 AM
I was watching SC on Sunday morning and they showed a side by side of the number of ranked opponents faced by UCLA and UConn during their streaks and UConn faced ~20 more than UCLA. One of the talking douchebags on ESPN proceeded to claim this as proof that UConn had faced tougher opponents. ESPN has its head shoved so far up its own ass it is disgusting.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:15 AM
I don’t know if “Gino is right” or “hard to find fault” is how I’d put it.
Wouldn’t “It’s up to other people to choose who they’d like to compare this to. I’m just proud of this program and the kids and the coaches who’ve been a part of this run” had been enough?
You don’t ever get magnanimous from Geno, though. Always an ax to grind, a headline to make.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:15 AM
Jeremy Roenick is on Price is Right right now!!
Sid and Ovie are going to be on giving away a Winter Classic showcase.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:15 AM
Furiously?
December 20th, 2010 at 11:15 AM
He broke an NCAA basketball record. I realize that no one gives a shit about women’s basketball but that doesn’t mean it isn’t an amazing feat. It’s not like UCONN’s women’s team played scrub teams for 88 straight games. They won a national championship between now and then in a tournament where upsets happen all the time.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:16 AM
Legend.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:16 AM
Anyone here ever play on a team with a winning streak that long? Didn’t think so. So why diminish the accomplishment? They’ve won 88 consecutive games and when they win the next one they can say they have done what no other team has done. Ever. Tremendous accomplishment.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:17 AM
Boom.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:17 AM
I’m amongst the few that actually likes women’s hoops, volleyball, and soccer. That said, the record shouldn’t even be mentioned anywhere close to the UCLA men.
I’m with you, I enjoy those sports (wife played VB on the Canadian National Team) and I support women’s hockey. But to compare across genders I don’t get.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:18 AM
It was just so fucking random. Girl won the yodeling man game and got tickets to next years Stanley Cup Finals I think
December 20th, 2010 at 11:19 AM
I once won 90 straight Free Cell games
December 20th, 2010 at 11:19 AM
Oh, the streak is awesome and they have every right to be proud. I don’t care to argue about whether it’s better than what UCLA did. Both are awesome.
But Geno, as always, doth protest too much. Constant bitching with that guy.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:19 AM
No. Upsets don’t happen in the women’s tournament at the same frequency as the men’s.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:19 AM

There was a TBL post on it last week.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:19 AM
I don’t care if you are talking about bake-offs, Bloodsport Kumates, fantasy football championships, or rec league games. 88 consecutive in a competitive event is impressive and worthy of note. Just like that school that hasn’t lost a squash match in years. Just because you don’t care about it doesn’t mean it is an accomplishment.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:20 AM
Hopefully they got her seats right by the Bud Light Brew House outside section 108.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:21 AM
I don’t think they’re doing a straight comparison. I think they’re saying in college sports, only two teams in the history of the sport have been able to win 88 straight games – UCLA men and UCONN women.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:21 AM
Seriously, he’s like the Kanye of WCBB.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:22 AM
I wasn’t alive during the UCLA streak so I may be incorrect, but I was under the belief that they had a huge talent edge over the rest of the country.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:22 AM
Without ever starting over? I love Free Cell.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:23 AM
If you actually follow women’s hoops and think that the Top 25, top to bottom, is comparable to the men’s Top 25, you’re all insane. It doesn’t matter how many ranked teams UConn plays, it’s in no way comparable. I’ve followed OSU and PSU women’s hoops for years, have a friend that’s one of the all-time UConn greats, and really don’t understand how it can be compared to UCLA.
As for the record, it is what it is. It’s a ridiculously amazing accomplishment, as is the PSU women’s volleyball team rocking a 4th straight NCAA title.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:25 AM
Jen Rizzotti? Shea Ralph? Kara Walters????
December 20th, 2010 at 11:25 AM
I think I speak for all of us who don’t have a vested interest in the UConn Lady Huskies (Luskies?) Basketball success when I say that tomorrow, December 21, 2010:
Ich bin ein Florida Stater.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:26 AM
And they cheated.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:26 AM

U of Alberta Pandas won 6 straight CIS titles in the late 90′s. Volleyball is one of the few sports where the CIS can compete with the NCAA.

Was the lucky winner a Caps fan? if so, first round playoff tickets would have been more appropriate.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:27 AM
I’ve won 88 straight games on Madden before.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:27 AM
Which included 109 in a row, guess Geno doesn’t recognize other womens sports.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:27 AM
He did not coach the UConn mens team nor did John Wooden coach the UCLA womens team. You judge your record against your competition.
No one compares the games of Roger Federer and Martina Navratilova to each other. They hold the most grand slams for mens and womens tennis but they are compared against the players who they competed against or would have competed against. Too compare UConn and UCLA’s streaks to each other is insulting to both. Obvious why it is insulting to UCLA but it is insulting to UCONN because they have to validate there accomplishments against a mens team instead of against there own competition.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:28 AM
lol….that guy was a douche.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:28 AM
Yeah, because it takes a rocket scientist to talk about sports, right? Nothing more tiresome than when an athlete plays the “You never played” card. That’s like advertising one’s inability to articulate a point.
It’s a great record, in an of itself. Why this great need to compare it to the men’s game? It’s not the same thing.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:29 AM
He is an ambassador for his sport. As a fan I hear enough dumb, ignorant stuff. I can only imagine the things he hears from people. Plus he isn’t the take it and suffer quietly kind of guy. Good for him.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:31 AM
Cal has a girl that I am now absolutely in love with. Tarah Murrey FTW!
December 20th, 2010 at 11:32 AM
I’m sure he hears some stupid shit. And now that you say that, I guess I’d be grumpy too if I constantly had people belittling my life’s accomplishments.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:32 AM
This is fantastic
December 20th, 2010 at 11:33 AM
Not much of one, by the wording of his quote.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:33 AM
I’m a huge women’s volleyball fan. It’s an easy and exciting sport to watch. Penn State deserves big ups for what they did so does the UCONN team.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:34 AM
Haha. See, Seattle. That’s why you can’t have good things.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:34 AM
Long-time listener, first-time caller, this one. Even Mother Teresa’s a choker.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:34 AM
Volleyball is awesome
December 20th, 2010 at 11:35 AM
So you agree with him when he says, that there are sexists that show up specifically to root against UConn, in order to preserve some age old men’s record. That is absurd.

I am too, you actually get some solid rallies in the women’s game rather than the pass, pass, floor you see in the men’s game.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:36 AM
Ughh I fail.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:36 AM
Great sport to play and to watch. Especially the beach versions.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:38 AM
Bring Your Own Oil. Dig the new avatar, BTW. And I’ll get killed for saying this, but NSync’s cover of “That’s the Way Love Goes” is pretty damn good.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:38 AM
Add women’s tennis to this list.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:38 AM
Hard to make a case that you were hurt physically and emotionally when you are on tape dancing around and waiving with the snow chunk cradled 8 in your arms.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:40 AM
I just know you’re going to “forget” yours.
You know me of all people won’t kill you for that. That is a great cover of a great song. Really wish someone could cover “If” and do it well.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:41 AM
Actually didn’t know they covered that one. Their acapella of “Mary Anne Walking Away” is solid as well. Speaking of acapella, sing off finale tonight.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:42 AM
I haven’t watched one ep and I have all of them on demand. I feel bad for this.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:43 AM
Well now I have to try to track this down and give it a listen.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:43 AM
F that noise, no one is going to do a better version of that song.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:45 AM
I watch with a bunch of people from work, we sit around, eat pizza, drink, and make harsh judgments on everything about the show. Good times. Love Ben Folds as a judge, and I’m rooting for Street Corner Symphony, their cover of “Down on the Corner” was ballin.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:45 AM
Geno, imma happy for you and imma let you win your stupid “record”, but then GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY FACE!”
If the suits at ESPN didn’t have kids that went to UConn or had to hear about it every time they went to Starbucks, dinner, from their friends, NOBODY would give a fuck about this
December 20th, 2010 at 11:45 AM
Yeah, you’re probably right. Might be one of my favorite songs ever. Just a ridiculously fun song and video.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:49 AM
Geno is dead on. Can’t disagree with one thing he wrote. I’ve written here in the past why what UConn has done is more impressive than UCLA.
December 20th, 2010 at 11:55 AM
Is it because of better footwork?
December 20th, 2010 at 11:57 AM
Nice accomplishment Gino, but give it up. It’s women’s basketball which doesn’t hold a stinky jock strap to men’s basketball. You’re not breaking the men’s record record and it certainly doesn’t count as an all-time record since the women don’t pay the men. Apples and oranges Gino or is it Gina?
December 20th, 2010 at 12:03 PM
Geno is dead on. Can’t disagree with one thing he wrote. I’ve written here in the past why what UConn has done is more impressive than UCLA.
that’s great and all that, but this is another record that belongs in the Ripley Hall of Fame, along with making the world’s largest cherry pie or most mattresses knocked over in a dominoes line
nobody cares
December 20th, 2010 at 12:06 PM
Good one michelle

I bet Geno thinks that Canada wining 5 straight WJCs is comparable to the Canadiens winning x number of Stanley Cups in a row
December 20th, 2010 at 1:32 PM
That would be Trinity College.
In Connecticu.
