With Texas Assistants Clearing Out, Mack Brown Has Decisions to Make
Texas needed fresh perspective after a 5-7 season. The Longhorns will get more than they intended. Resignations, retirements and the fallout from Will Muschamp’s departure for Florida could leave Mack Brown without seven of his nine assistant coaches (The Texodus?), a potential disaster for both system continuity and recruiting. Where does Texas go from here?
There are no in-house replacements on defense. Duane Akina’s disastrous DC spell and demotion in 2007 precludes him from being promoted again. The preeminent candidate seems to be Randy Shannon, who was a candidate for the job in 2007. On paper he may be the ideal move.
Shannon is still only 44. He assembled a string of top 10 defenses at Miami. That, the number of players he has groomed for the NFL and his compelling personal story make him an ideal recruiter. Having been so recently fired by Miami, he’s not a flight risk. He can assume Muschamp’s role as linebackers coach as well. It would be nearly impossible to top Shannon’s age, experience and skill-set.
The answer on offense may still be on staff, if Brown can keep him. Major Applewhite hasn’t left for Florida yet, but he won’t remain in Texas as “a candidate to become offensive coordinator.” He’s held the position at two schools. He would also ensure the enrollment of five-star tailback Malcolm Brown.
Mack Brown is in an unenviable position. Actually, scratch that. He’s head coach at Texas. He makes more than $5 million per year. For 99.9999 percent of people, that’s enviable. These are tough decisions, but ones Brown, in that pay grade, should handle.
Hard to believe that only 12 months ago the Longhorns were preparing for the BCS Title Game.

This might be a good landing spot for Randy. Maybe he could learn something about the political side of things from Mack Brown and re-emerge in a couple of years as a more polished HC. As for Texas, I have little doubt that they’ll be fine.

I don’t know who to cheer for in this Man U-Arsenal game. As a Tottenham fan, I like seeing Arsenal lose. But it’s so tight at the top of the table, I’m not sure who losing helps the Spurs more in the long run.

Longhorns are fucked.
Who wants a coordinator job? Only warning is the head coach will probably not make it past 2011, so plan accordingly.

Can a Texas or A&M fan clear something up for me? When was the last time that both programs were elite at the same time? It seems like in recent history (last 20 years or so) one team has been great (or close to it) while the other has struggled. Growing up, A&M was always the top team and playing in the Cotton Bowl while Texas was largely irrelevant.
I also read today that OK St. is making inroads into Texas recruiting which puts all the more pressure on Brown to hire a couple of top assistants. SHannon and Applewhite seem to make a lot of sense.
December 13th, 2010 at 3:11 PM

I think they could be in for another rough year and it will be interesting if anything happens to Mack Brown if that does happen. Gilbert looks terrible and never really got better. The running game needs to get going but they don’t appear to have the line or the backs for it. The defense should still be tough with the right DC though.
December 13th, 2010 at 3:17 PM

If you were going to say Texas was irrelevant for any stretch of time, I guess it would be the 80s when they only one a single conference title. But that strikes me as picking at nits.
December 13th, 2010 at 3:20 PM
That would be hilarious, but you can’t have egos as big as his and Mack’s on the same staff.
December 13th, 2010 at 3:20 PM
They were dominant in the 60′s and 70′s. The 80′s were pretty rough as they only one won conference title and it wasn’t until Mack Brown got there that they were consistently a top team in the nation again.

I can only name a handful of Longhorn players growing up that I watched, but I can name a ton of Aggies. They were far and away the more relevant team.
Your anecdotal evidence aside, I was referring more to the question of Texas being irrelevant until the late 90s or early 2000s. Which I suppose you could say was true in the 80s and part of the 90s, relative to Texas. But as I recall they have the second or third best winning percentage of any program in the history of the sport. That hardly smacks of irrelevance.
December 13th, 2010 at 3:26 PM
IT DOESN’T MATTER WHY YOU WOULD SAY SOMETHING LIKE THAT!!!!!

Hate is a strong word. Can you really “hate” a sport? You can dislike a sport.
I don’t believe there is actually a sport that I dislike. I don’t like NASCAR but that may have more to do with the people who watch it than the sport itself.

Hampton tested positive. I assume the press release will be the others that did as well and some sort of self-imposed sanction. We’re going to the Insight Bowl, so it really doesn’t matter.
What matters is next season and if parents still trust Kirk Ferentz when he walks into their living rooms after X amount of players tested positive for illegal drug use under his watch and a fellow player was selling to them. 2011-12 will be a big year for Kirk.

Wegher transferring happened last week. It’s Coker and Robinson next year along with the kid they recruited from Texas. There hasn’t been a de-commit yet, just losing an in-state kid to Oregon. That is a bit worrisome, but not too bad.

How did Webb not give Fletcher a red card for that shit?
December 13th, 2010 at 3:40 PM
Yeah, the Cotton bowl was once one of the big four New Year’s Day bowls. Now it’ not played on New Year’s day and also not played in the Cotton bowl.
The ags were the much better program for a while there (McWilliams, Mackovic, Sherill, Slocum time). And someone was correct…it’s very rare that both teams are really good at the same time. The ags are on top now.
December 13th, 2010 at 3:40 PM
Holy shit. Rooney just ran after the referee and pushed him away. Should’ve been a yellow card. But looks like webb was too intimidated by the crowd.
December 13th, 2010 at 3:40 PM
Jackie Sherrill and A&M made SMU look like a JV program in those days.
Uh, that’s because we were from 1989 until 1998. And then again until 2005. And then again until 2008.

ji sung park didn’t have any idea as to what he was doing. Unlucky goal surrendered by arsenal.

I guess I’m referring more to the McWilliams (31-26 at Texas) and Mackovic (41-28-2) years. They each had one season of more than 8 wins.
Maybe it’s because my team sucked for most of a 25 year period, but 8 consistent 8 wins is not that bad. Though relative to Texas, you’re right, those were let down periods.
December 13th, 2010 at 3:43 PM
Yeah, that was lucky as hell. I hope Arsenal pulls level, one point for each seems best for those of us who don’t like either team.
December 13th, 2010 at 3:43 PM
It was a lucky goal, but park has been working his ass off so I’m ok with it.
December 13th, 2010 at 3:44 PM

Fair point. But having one of the best program winning percentages of all time is nothing to scoff at. Rutgers has been playing since the 1870s. I don’t believe they have a ton of titles to their credit either.

So I’ve heard. I think one of the laugh out loud moments I had when watching the 30 for 30 this weekend was when an SMU assistant under Ron Meyer talked about meeting with an A&M committed recruit and showing him $20,000. To which the recruit replied, “Coach, that’s not even close”.

They’re Texas. They will be fine, but it will take them another year or so. Texas A&M and OU are both better next year, and Mizzou might be as well. Ok St could also beat them. I think they will be fine if they can get a good OC. They have loads of talent on D, so any DC worth a damn will field a good defense.
