Not understanding the hate for the Pena deal.

Not a lot of options. He goes from the AL East to the worst division in baseball. Even if his AVG only goes back to just north of .200 he should still put up an OPS+ over 100. Combine that with defense that is on par with D. Lee, and I would say it is a wash. Oh, and they only have to pay him for 1 year.

It’s perfectly fine for you to be ok with the Jeter deal. But if you’re going to be in that camp, slamming the Werth deal makes absolutely no sense, and tends to make you look like a dummy.

Still don’t get how the Jeter deal is ok, but the Werth deal is terrible. If the AAV is about the same, and you get more production from Werth, and he’s more valuable defensively, then what’s the issue, other than duration? And the supplemental parts argument is a bunch of nonsense. It’s pretty obvious that the Nationals are trying to compete with mostly young, cost controlled talent, with a few key veteran pieces here and there. Werth fits that latter category, and will do so for several years.

All of this. The Werth deal would still be better though if he wasn’t 31.

The Nationals need something to get the fans to the ballpark. They know they won’t be very good, so they have to offer a little more than what others would have to pay. Nationals fans just lost Dunn, so this is somewhat of a replacement. Overall it is an expensive way of getting the locals interested in a shitty team

For now, I’ll assume this is a contract they can live with since they offered it up.

I think they offered it because he was drawing large interest and knew they’d have to overpay to get him in Washington. Kinda like what the Giants did with Zito.

The Nationals are going to be more competitive than they have been in years past this season. Still think they finish no better than 3rd in the NL East.

a.) duration
b.) he’s had one GREAT season and a couple of good ones
c.) the Nationals are far more affected by $18M a year than the Yankees are
d.) the Yankees supplemental parts create a far greater sum than the Nationals. Werth is “the guy” along with Zimmerman in WSH. Jeter is just the Yankee captain

To your points….

A) Yes, I think the deal is probably a year or two longer than would be ideal
B) I’d say Werth has had four consecutive seasons where he was very good. Jeter has had two bad seasons in the last three.
C) I don’t know what the Nationals long-term plan is and what they can/can’t afford. For now, I’ll assume this is a contract they can live with since they offered it up.
D) I don’t get this part so I’m not going to comment
