45-3.
Forget the score, the ineptitude in every facet of the game, Tom Brady’s ruthless efficiency against a toothless pass rush, or that smug fucking look you just want to smack off Belichick’s face. Here’s the really bad news: The Jets are in position to collapse like they did in 1986, 1994 and 2008. The Jets’ 9-3 mark is deceiving. They close with Miami, at Pittsburgh, at Chicago and Buffalo. The Dolphins are at their best on the road. The Steelers have the second best defense in the league. The Bears play down to their competition (lost to the Seahawks & Redskins at home), but up to it, too (beat Green Bay & Philly at home). The Bills are pesky (ask Pittsburgh). Disaster awaits!
Briefly on the 45-3 debacle:
Offense: I actually liked the way the Jets opened the game – Sanchez in shotgun, throwing the ball. They threw the predictable playbook out the window. And it worked! Well, on the first drive. Then Rex made the terrible decision to kick a 50-yard field goal into the wind. It wasn’t close. Patriots drove a short field to a 10-0 win. Sanchez was hurt by a Holmes drop on the next drive, then made a bad pass to Holmes (short, over the middle) and the Jets punted. Weatherford shanked one, and the Patriots had another short field for a 17-0 win. Ballgame.
For the second year in a row, Sanchez struggled on the road against the Patriots. Last year? Five turnovers. This year, three interceptions. The Jets actually ran the ball effectively (down 17-0) – 31 rushes, 152 yards. If there is a third matchup, expect a heavy dose of ground and pound.
Defense: Embarrassing. Shitty. Fraudulent. Porous. They gave up 405 yards. They permitted 7.0 yards per play. Instead of blitzing heavily, the Jets mixed it up and tried a meek pass rush and dropping eight guys into a zone. That’s the kind of shit you pull against rookies or bad QBs (Chad Henne, Carson Palmer, etc). Brady was 21-for-29. Did the Jets forget the 2nd half of the first meeting? You know, when they blitzed Brady, kept him off balance, and he was ineffective? On the plus side, Brady didn’t throw at Revis once! He did make Antonio Cromartie look like a clueless scrub, though. (If there is a rematch, Revis will definitely be on Branch.)
Back to the history of collapses:
1986 collapse: Jets opened 10-1, were thumped 45-3 by the Dolphins, and never won another game in the regular season. They backed into the playoffs, though, beating the Chiefs and then losing to the Browns (who then lost to Elway’s “Drive”).
1994 collapse: Jets were 6-5 in first place in their division. They had Miami beat … until Marino’s fake-spike TD. The Dolphins won and took over first place. The Jets never won another game.
2008 collapse: Jets were 8-3 with Favre at QB after a road win over previously-unbeaten Tennessee. They got thumped at home by Denver, then lost three of four to miss the playoffs. Favre left, Mangini was fired, and the Jets hired Rex Ryan and drafted Mark Sanchez.
How the Jets can collapse in 2010: Jets lose their next four. Colts win their next four (very, very possible). Chargers win their next four (very, very possible). Chiefs win three of four (very, very possible). Jaguars win three. (very, very possible). And don’t think I’m just saying all that can happen – each of those four teams have soft schedules. It could easily happen. Then you have a logjam of 10-6 and 9-7 teams. Lisk will take you through the tiebreakers later, not that I even want to look at them.

It wouldn’t be complete without LDT firing himself up to get on the exercise bike.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:01 AM
And…. GO!
/gets comfy in chair
December 7th, 2010 at 11:02 AM
They close with Miami, at Pittsburgh, at Chicago and Buffalo
One of these is not quite like the others.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:02 AM
Jets were barely beating bad teams. They’ve beaten one team with a winning record — the Patriots in Week 2. In their three other games against teams over .500, the Jets haven’t produced a single touchdown and have been outscored 64-12.
/ouch’d
December 7th, 2010 at 11:04 AM
Inlcuding one to the Niners!!
Fuck you, Favre.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:04 AM
Damn. The Mexigod looked atrocious yesterday. Just god-awful. He looked like he didn’t know how to play in cold weather.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:04 AM
If there is a third matchup, expect a heavy dose of ground and pound.
This is what my girlfriend said to me after our second date. At that point, I knew it was love.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:05 AM
Blitzing is not the answer to beating this Patriot team, you need to get pressure with 4 rushers and an occasional 5th blitzer, not sure Jets have the defensive players without Jenkins.

Holy. Shit.

December 7th, 2010 at 11:06 AM
Actually that terrible decision took place when they let go of Feeley and brought in Folk.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:06 AM
This was pretty much the reason I was on NE -4 last night. I just didn’t trust NYJ to get it done against a good team, when they haven’t beaten anyone of note (and struggled/lucked into the W’s they got) since mid-Sept.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:06 AM
Questions? Mocking?
Get it all out of your system. I’m here to take my beating.
I hope Antonio Cromartie is throwing punches. He’ll miss all of them
December 7th, 2010 at 11:07 AM
bolded is why they were able to run the ball “effectively.”
December 7th, 2010 at 11:07 AM
Well their next 2 games are against “good” teams on the road.
I still think the Jets are a good team, but i don’t think they’ll beat either of those teams.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:08 AM
The Sanchise struggled bigtime against Buffalo last year. Pittsburgh’s D is going to eat that offense alive. Also, I forget who said it last night, but Sanchez really looked like a pussy all bundled up in the cold. Typical warm weather nancyboy.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:08 AM
TBL: The Jets are a good, not great team that just got worked by the best QB in the NFL (sorry Sanders). The Pats also worked the Steelers. It happens.
Matt Ryan >> Mark Sanchez
December 7th, 2010 at 11:08 AM
it worked in the 2nd half of the first meeting.
And i believe last year in the meeting at the Meadowlands
December 7th, 2010 at 11:08 AM
That pretty much nails it. There was a surprising slip into first person in this post, too.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
Reason #4597 stats are dumb. The Patriots defense is statistically the worst in the NFL. They are actually pretty good.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
Total obliteration.
That said, TBL, remember last year’s Saints domination of the Pats in MNF? The Pats still went on to make the playoffs. So getting beat by another team that badly is not indicative of any great slide.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
I agree – it you can’t get there with 4 you’re in trouble. Brady is going to pick apart whatever man-to-man matchup you end up with if you send any more guys. If those 4 don’t get there, you’re in trouble too.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
Eh, I’m not one for kicking a man while he’s down. If you sat through that entire game, you’ve suffered enough.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
The Jets offense at times looks uglier than Sam Rosen.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:10 AM
gnashed his teeth and bit the recess ladies breast!
December 7th, 2010 at 11:10 AM
The Jets offense is actually really bad.
F-R-A-U-D-S Frauds Frauds Frauds Frauds!
December 7th, 2010 at 11:10 AM
Been saying this all season, that’s not a news flash.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:11 AM
The Sanchise struggled bigtime against Buffalo last year. Pittsburgh’s D is going to eat that offense alive. Also, I forget who said it last night, but Sanchez really looked like a pussy all bundled up in the cold. Typical warm weather nancyboy.
True, but still…it’s the Bills.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:11 AM
A mild setback for the Jets. Pats showed New York the kitchen sink. When they meet in the playoffs, Rex will be ready and the Pats will get embarrassed. The Jets record speaks for itself.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:11 AM
I did like how the last paragraph was an attempt to reverse-jinx the remainder of the entire season. Normally TBL limits that tactic to the current game.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:11 AM
This right here.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:12 AM
True. Gruden even pointed in the pregame that Cleveland frustrated Brady by occasionally dropping 8 or 9.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:12 AM
Reason #4597 stats are dumb.
It’s a good thing there are more than 4,597 reasons why this is a dumb statement.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:12 AM
Surprised there wasn’t commentary on Rex’s first challenge too. Especially after they decided to go for it after they lost the challenge. That right there was a bad omen for the game.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:12 AM
The Jets fucked up the first quarter about as badly as you can fuck it up without turning the ball over. Just a comedy of errors. There wasn’t one phase that the Patriots didn’t beat them in. And let’s include the front office.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:12 AM
Good post. I agree that Jets looked good on first drive until the FG fiasco, down hill after that. And what’s Tirico’s deal? Going buck on Jets use of challenge and porky pig laugh about Jets losing to Browns in playoffs
/Now, how about that Sega Saturn Nintendo Wii ad?
December 7th, 2010 at 11:12 AM
This season, you’ll get no argument from me. Careerwise, I’ll take Manning, but Brady’s season this year, with the receiver and RB shuffling and shitty pass defense is the second-best season I’ve seen a QB have in the past decade (after Manning’s 2006, when that run defense limited him to sometimes only seven possessions a game).
Brady’s a monster. To beat the Pats, you have to get pressure with four and jump the quick outs and slants and hope to God you don’t die on draws and screens. The one good thing is the Pats’ only deep ball receiver right now isn’t very good. And you can throw all over them. They’re beatable, but they’re pretty damn good.

@ Rex
December 7th, 2010 at 11:13 AM
Then don’t get all doom and gloom because they were trounced by the best team in football. They are what they are…good but not great.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:13 AM
he really did. that last interception was fucking awful.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:14 AM
The Jets are a blitzing team with Rex running the show though. That’s the type of defense the have built. You go away from that and the defense and its coordinator are running something they’re not well versed in.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:14 AM
I am saddened that I missed this game. Damn being 6 time zones ahead and schoolwork. When I saw the score this morning, my first thought was that there wouldn’t be a post by TBL until like 4 pm ET because of the massive hangover he would be nursing from drinking his misery away.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:14 AM
F the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets
December 7th, 2010 at 11:14 AM
That ball should have been respotted. I am done with the challenge system. Let all questionable calls just go to the booth. College has this right.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:14 AM
I was amazed to hear that the Jets have gone 7 or 8 games without a TD in the first quarter. That’s amazing.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:15 AM
3 questions:
1. Where the hell did Darrelle Revis go? Is he…lost in an island?
2. Did all the receivers start Braylon-ing?
3. So…Sanchez. Not that clutch?
December 7th, 2010 at 11:15 AM
Your so called best team in football got fucking pasted by the Browns.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:15 AM
I love Peyton, but I’d absolutely take Brady over him. Peyton makes me nervous. I trust Brady like I trusted Miyagi.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:15 AM
In a season when every good team has a major flaw or two, “pretty damn good” is probably SB worthy.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:16 AM
Two of the three were just terrible picks that rookies shouldn’t make. The one deep down the sideline happens to the best of them.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:16 AM
Meximelt was beyond horrid yesterday. Drew Stanton could have done better.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:16 AM
You’re a thousand percent right. The problem is, Rex didn’t understand this last night. He rarely caught Brady off guard. And is Wes Welker still overrated? That little son of a bitch was schooling people last night like nobody’s business. The Pats receivers last night were making the secondary look really silly.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:16 AM
Get it all out of your system. I’m here to take my beating. TBl
It isn’t like you were talking shit and saying they were great. Keep your head up and go hunting for more Eva Mendes pictures.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:17 AM
So? They are 10-2…so I would bet money that the CLE game was the exception that proves the rule. An anomaly.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:17 AM
Your so called best team in football got fucking pasted by the Browns.
They are the best team at this point in the season, still 1/4 of the season left.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:17 AM
That’s because you’re a Niners and Yankees fan. Montana and Jeter are yo boys. You have to say that. You’re all about the “big spot.” No one who’d take Brady over Manning is necessarily “wrong.” Doing so because of their respective last three games is foolish, however. Then again, this is the Internet…
December 7th, 2010 at 11:17 AM
this may be a factor, but i sure hope not. if sanchez soils the bed at Pitt & Chicago (very good defenses), I’ll believe this.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:18 AM
Poor Eric Smith.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:18 AM
Hard Knocks hurt more than it helped the Jets, IMO.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:18 AM
The Bears will beat the Pats this week end.
Close, but they will win.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:18 AM
Aaron Hernandez is going to be a baller for the Pats. The route he ran on his long YAC was awesome. Also, him making it rain in the endzone was badass.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:18 AM
Surprised there wasn’t commentary on Rex’s first challenge too. Especially after they decided to go for it after they lost the challenge. That right there was a bad omen for the game.
That ball should have been respotted. I am done with the challenge system. Let all questionable calls just go to the booth. College has this right.
As I said yesterday, the challenge system is for something that can turn the game on its head; not for using on a questionable 3rd and short in the 1st quarter.
Truth be told, it was a sign of how desperate Rex was for this W. A coach not caught up in the moment either opts for the 4th-and-short or punts and lives for the next drive (you’re only down 3 points).
Hell, if he wanted to take the timeout to think it over, do that!
December 7th, 2010 at 11:19 AM
How many crucial 3rd down drops did “New York Essence” have last night?
December 7th, 2010 at 11:19 AM
Brady avoided him at all cost. So… you probably wouldn’t notice him.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:19 AM
Doesn’t his brother play a similar scheme? Don’t the Ravens play a similar scheme? Gotta be able to adapt and overcome.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:19 AM
never said they were a ‘great’ team?
December 7th, 2010 at 11:19 AM
undefeated regular seasons are so rare (two of them), that it’s safe to say EVERY team loses games. the Patriots losing to the Browns big means nothing more than they played poorly against a bottom half of the league team. so what? using the entire season so far as a measuring stick, this means nothing.
/fuck the Gheytriots
/fuck the Jets too
December 7th, 2010 at 11:20 AM
ok…and….this means what?
December 7th, 2010 at 11:20 AM
The colts need to make the playoffs. I still think Manning would have the best shot at knocking off the Pats in new england.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:21 AM
Avoided him or capitalized on other match-ups? Chicken and egg I guess.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:21 AM
Come on, it’s 2010. Anybody can beat anybody on any given week, the trick is to not wildly overreact from week to week. See: San Diego last week, the NY Giants a few weeks before, Philly a couple weeks ago
December 7th, 2010 at 11:21 AM
tedy bruschi night!
December 7th, 2010 at 11:21 AM
Yes, but because of Freeney and Mathis.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:21 AM
Peyton Thundercock Hillis > Jonathan Horseface Elway
December 7th, 2010 at 11:22 AM
didn’t you see the gamer post last night?
That was mentioned. any jets fan could have seen this potential collapse coming miles away
December 7th, 2010 at 11:23 AM
Indeed. It’s been an “any given sunday” league for a long time now. Doesn’t stop us from crowning people’s asses on a regular basis, though. I just think we’re all less surprised when we’re wrong.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:23 AM
Hey, I have him right behind Tommy.
Tommy doesn’t lose that Cowboys game after finally getting the lead. He just doesn’t.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:23 AM
They would certainly help, but Seabass stoned Mathis in the teams’ last meeting. I would say it’s moreso because Manning threw for 400 yards on the Pats’ secondary with Donald Brown and Edge James’ homeless cousin in the backfield, but that’s just me.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:23 AM
Irish, do I win a laurel and hardy handshake for the weekly pick’em?
December 7th, 2010 at 11:23 AM
Either or. The comment I was responding to was a little asinine, though. You can’t make plays if the ball isn’t coming your way.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:24 AM
Actually I would say because of all the rest of the AFC teams the Colts can get in and win a shootout with them.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:24 AM
Suppose to be 22 and snowy in Chicago Sunday.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:24 AM
No offense, Hair, I just can’t discuss football in these type of terms. You might as well be sitting behind a desk with a giant ESPN logo behind you.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:25 AM
Del Rio has the Jags choppin’ wood. They win the division, knock off the Ravens in first round then go up to NE and knock off the Pats.
/not really
December 7th, 2010 at 11:25 AM
Nope. If being a fan means expecting losses, I don’t want to have a favorite team anymore. I’d rather be a casual observer than a pussy.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:25 AM
he definately had a few, loved every one of them
December 7th, 2010 at 11:25 AM
I support this 100%
December 7th, 2010 at 11:25 AM
That would be incredible.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:26 AM
Either or. The comment I was responding to was a little asinine, though. You can’t make plays if the ball isn’t coming your way.
Agreed. Can’t fault his game.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:26 AM
To me, this just looked like a game where one team did everything perfectly, while the other one just wasn’t completely synchronized.
Seems like Brady and co always seem to have one Prime time game a year where they just blow out he other team regardless of how good they are.
Next time these teams meet, I don’t think it is as much of a blowout and could easily go the other way.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:26 AM
i think the Browns have earned “middling” status.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:26 AM
HA. I had a feeling you’d enjoy that one. I’ll stop.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:26 AM
True, but still…it’s the Bills.
Bills will beat the Jets on 1/3

December 7th, 2010 at 11:26 AM

December 7th, 2010 at 11:26 AM
Del Rio has the Jags choppin’ wood. They win the division, knock off the Ravens in first round then go up to NE and knock off the Pats.
/not really
The Red Wings suck.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:27 AM
And again, did anybody see some of the plays the Patriots receivers were making last night? Just completely pwned anybody who was covering them once the ball came their way.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:27 AM
Avoided him or capitalized on other match-ups? Chicken and egg I guess.
Either or. The comment I was responding to was a little asinine, though. You can’t make plays if the ball isn’t coming your way.
So what WR did Revis eliminate from Brady’s equation last night? Seemed like the Jets were playing in 8-men zones and Brady was picking them apart at will.
And when Wes Welker is pushing people to get into the endzone, that’s a sign your great D has quit. But then, so did Danny Woodhead.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:27 AM
Isn’t Brady from California?
December 7th, 2010 at 11:27 AM
Brady avoided throwing at Revis, but they schemed him out of plays too with formation and motion. Also doing creative stuff like the fourth down TD, where they lined up 5 wide, with trips right, and all three WRs on the right side of the formation stayed in to block, and it was a two man route with Branch and Woodhead.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:27 AM
damn, I love living in Arkansas.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:28 AM
won in NY last year, spread will be less than 6, maybe even 4
December 7th, 2010 at 11:28 AM
JHS – did I hear correctly that the Jags can go 3-1 (lose to the Colts) and the Colts can go 4-0 these last 4 weeks and the Colts would win the division? I haven’t looked at the standings or the schedule for either to prove this myself, but I think the Colts play the Jags in Indy and the Titans home and away for 3 of those games.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:29 AM
The Bay area, which isn’t warm by any means.
/no idea where Sanchez is from
December 7th, 2010 at 11:29 AM
And got mushroom stamped at home last night. Loved seeing these this morning… Red Wings’ top players: Henrik Zetterberg (minus-4), Niklas Kronwall (minus-3), Pavel Datsyuk (minus-3) and Todd Bertuzzi (minus-3).
Communism doesn’t work.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:29 AM
No worries, I figured you were jesting. It’d be awesome if the Colts and Pats met in the playoffs again. A lot of things would have to fall into place, though.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:29 AM
if the sanchize plays like he did last night go ahead and mark it now.
bills will give them trouble.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:29 AM
the offense worked so well on the first possession that they were in position for a 50 yard field goal.
dude, the offense sucked from the start.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:29 AM
This is why corners, even great corners are overrated. Give me a Demarcus Ware or Dwight Freeney over Revis anytime.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:29 AM
that was play was cooked when Eric Smith sold the blitz 5 seconds before the snap. Brady easily saw it and called the pick-play (a flag could have been called Woodhead was so blatant) and Branch toasted Cro (again)
December 7th, 2010 at 11:29 AM
You have a lot to learn. You think cynicism is just a silly defense mechanism based on a whim? It’s EARNED.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:30 AM
the pats got pasted by the browns, but the browns aren’t that bad of a team, damnit!
they have a decent record against the league’s toughest schedule with not a lot of talent. they’re well coached and young. there’s no shame in that loss other than from a physical standpoint where the pats got waxed.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:30 AM
Bills will beat the Jets on 1/3
/If I say it enough, it will happen, right?!?#
Hey I’ll be going for you guys jpq. And for what’s it’s worth: Bills D >>> Texans D.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:30 AM
Didn’t mean it as a slight against Manning. I just think that given the weaknesses of the Colts offense and defense this season (and what we have observed the Patriots to be capable of on offense now), Freeney and Mathis getting to Brady would be more important than ever.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:30 AM
Don’t mind if I do. Really at this point I think it is out of my system. Blowing the Jets out was great but the season is far from over, lots of football to be played.
…………Well, okay one more.
Rock = Pats, HHH = Jets
December 7th, 2010 at 11:30 AM
Colts have the common opponents tiebreaker. If the Colts beat the Jags and finish 10-6 and the Jags finish 10-6, the Colts win the South. If the Colts beat the Jags and finish 9-7 and the Jags finish 9-7, the Colts still win the AFC South, so long as their lone loss is to the Raiders and not to the Titans either time.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:31 AM
Why does he have to eliminate a receiver from the equation if the Jets were mixing up zone coverages and Brady/Belichick were legitimately trying to scheme him out of their plays. Whatever.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:31 AM

JHS – did I hear correctly that the Jags can go 3-1 (lose to the Colts) and the Colts can go 4-0 these last 4 weeks and the Colts would win the division?
If the Colts run the table and the Jags go 3-1 the Colts take the division. The tie breaker would be common opponents, Jags would be 7-5 in games, Indy would be 8-4.

that’s all part of the offense sucking. i can sit here all day and tell you that half of Eli’s INTs are his receivers fault since it hit their hands, but if he hits them from the face down, they don’t get picked. they are still on him just as much as the receiver. part of the offense sucking are the players playing like shit.

won in NY last year, spread will be less than 6, maybe even 4
That spread will be 7, Jets crushed them earlier in the year.

I would like to think the Steelers are the team that can beat the Pats but with our secondary being iffy and the Pats spreading the field, I’m dubious.

My mind’s still blown over Polian admitting he should’ve taken Saffold instead of Jerry Hughes. So unlike him to admit a mistake. I think seeing this offensive line implode in front of him has been pretty humbling. He’s still a great personnel man, but this has been a pretty big ding to his resume.

December 7th, 2010 at 11:37 AM
Well I would say the 8 men zones lead to this. It reminded me of playing football with 3 people where one person just plays QB all the time and you have a CB and a wide receiver. Even if that CB blankets the wide receiver on his route the QB is just standing there waiting for the wide receiver to keep running around until he is open.
How many times did Welker finish his route and then just run to an open spot? Which is why you have to get pressure on Brady.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:37 AM
Shit.

That’s pretty much what the Giants did to a Pats team with much better personnel.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:38 AM
Good for him. I’m being sincere. Him deflecting blame to personnel that he has selected has been a really bad look for him. I’m happy he finally realizes that he has to look in the mirror and see that he has done a poor job of protecting his number 1 asset lately.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:38 AM
Lost by 1 on the tiebreaker. That’s OK, 14 for 16 puts me back in the hunt for the overall champ.

December 7th, 2010 at 11:39 AM
So right now the line on Indy-Tennessee is Indy by 3. Get on that shit now because I can’t believe it won’t be more soon.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:39 AM
think polian sticks around for much longer or could mistakes like this wear out his welcome?
December 7th, 2010 at 11:39 AM
Why does he have to eliminate a receiver from the equation if the Jets were mixing up zone coverages and Brady/Belichick were legitimately trying to scheme him out of their plays. Whatever.
Because that’s his job? Because that’s why they spent all preseason trying to get him back? Because that’s why he’s paid like one of the best defensive players in the league?
I’m simply commenting on how absent he was from last night’s events. For such a key player to get taken out of the equation so easily is both a sign of Belichick’s genius and/or the Jets’ inability to respond.
This! A great pass rush will make good corners look great. Great corners won’t make a good pass rush look great. Elite DEs are worth their weight in gold.

It’s bad, he’s slowly been admitting it. He said Jake Scott defecting was because the Colts lowballed him. He said they cut Ryan Lilja because they thought he was still hurt (and he’s obviously not). They missed on Tony Ugoh and Mike Pollak – badly. Their current starting guards are an undrafted rookie and an AFL2 refugee. It’s bad. It’s not why Manning is suddenly missing LB’s dropping into coverage and forcing nine routes into double coverage, but it’s absolutely why they’re running 20 times a game for 40 yards and facing nothing but six DB’s and more.

Not sure you can flag Woodhead for that pick play on 4th down. He ran right at his man, who didn’t move, and then the defender contacted him more than 5 yards downfield. Branch ran right into the area vacated by the blitz. That’s why you have to get pressure with four. Brady is going to eat that up all day long.

December 7th, 2010 at 11:44 AM
His son’s the GM-in-waiting. I’ve always thought Polian and Manning would exit together, but after last season’s “quitting,” his comments after the Super Bowl and his last few years’ worth of top picks not panning out, he might just say screw it and leave. Or stick around just because he’s a prick like that. Not sure. He and Belichick are brothers from another mother.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:44 AM
Just an fyi… I was on the side of letting him keep holding out. He still ended up caving. Part of that is on Rex, part of that is on Revis, and I’m putting the rest on Al Davis.

No real elite LT’s coming out this year. None worth tanking for or trading up for, anyhow. Once you get into the tournament, anything can happen. Besides, in the eyes of the critics, it’d be better for the Colts not to make the Super Bowl than get there and lose it (like last year).

I know there aren’t elite tackles, but if they go 8-8, they would be in line for a pick somewhere around 18, right? Between the kids from BC, WIS, CO, AUB and elsewhere, you don’t think there would be a tackle that would be an improvement on what they have now? What about a stud safety or DE?

Danny Woodhead had 115 yards against his former team. He now has more receiving yards than Randy Moss since Moss was dealt.

Can you imagine Suh and Bowers on the same team? Holy shit…that would be scary. I know they should draft an OL, but that would be a tempting pick.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:58 AM
They spent their first rounder last year on a DE, just locked up Antoine Bethea long term and Melvin Bullitt’s a decent fill in for Bob Sanders when he’s likely released after this season. They need a new left tackle, maybe a new right tackle if they can’t slide Charlie Johnson over, two new guards and the usual need at DT.

December 7th, 2010 at 12:02 PM

December 7th, 2010 at 12:02 PM
Well, Pat Angerer looks like he’ll be decent eventually. It hasn’t helped that their two best LB’s have missed most of the season. Their DT’s blow. They get beat singled up consistently, making it easy to double Mathis and Freeney. They also need some corner depth. They have one really good corner, one decent one, and a bunch of guys. And the really good and decent one are always hurt.
Staying healthy would solve a lot of their issues. But that’s just not realistic with the way their team is built and it being the NFL.

I think that could happen. Bowers has been climbing up draft boards and with no #2 overall-worthy LTs in THIS Draft, they’re free to take anyone else.

After this next season, if he can’t stay healthy. His injury this year was just as flukey as last year’s. And he’s actually healthy now, sadly. They had to choose between him and Bob Sanders to free up a roster spot in order to suit up the necessary 45 guys for a game. Bob Sanders had better return this season to make it worth it.
December 7th, 2010 at 12:08 PM
Would be great on ST. And wouldn’t be such a huge FUCKING WEAPON for the Pats. Also, who knows what they could have gotten out of him in the past 2 months. The whole coaching staff and the team knew what he could do, just stupid front office politics and ego was hindering him.
