Jayson Werth Signs With the Nationals: 7 Years, $126 Million
Jayson Werth: The Phillies outfielder just inked a laughable 7-year, $126 million contract with the Nationals. If you thought the Ryan Howard deal earlier this year was bad, what do you make of the Nationals giving a 31-year-old outfielder $126 million? It’s one thing to put up nice stats surrounded by Rollins, Utley, and Howard … can he do the same surrounded by Dunn and Zimmerman? [ED. Dunn signed with the White Sox this week.] Hopefully, when the young Washington pitching staff is killin’ it in three years, Werth is still worth it. [Wash Post]

When you’re a shitty MLB team you have to offer laughable contracts to bring players in. Good for Jayson, though. He wasn’t getting that money anywhere else.

first of all, what?
Second of all, this isn’t as bad as Howard’s deal.

They overpaid but this deal isn’t nearly as bad as the Howard deal, for a number of reasons. It’s a little more excusable to overpay a free agent when competing with other teams for his services. Overpaying for a player you have under control for two more years before he hits the market is just dumb. It’s reasonable to assume Werth is going to age much better than Howard based on their skill sets and *ahem* body types. Also, competent defensive OFs>>>>>terrible defensive first baseman

All that being said by Fetch and Garland aside, this is still a pretty dumb signing by the Natinals
