Ballin’: Cavs Embarrassed in LeBron’s Return
Miami 118, Cleveland 90: Just another letdown in the storied history of Cleveland sports teams coming up small in a big spot. How, when you’re down 30+, do you not take your frustrations out on LeBron (38 points)? This was an embarrassingly soft effort from the Cavs, who looked awful in what should will be their only national TV appearance of the year. As for the Cavs fans, they’re either pussies or showed some impressive decorum (only 1 arrest and 4 ejections). The crowd was loud, but that is not to be confused with hostile. This is hostile. Landon Donovan knows hostile.
Will this very public rout finally kick-start the Heat, who have struggled through the first 20 games? They’re 12-8 and have won three in a row. We kind of expect them to rattle off a few wins here, as five of their next seven games are fairly easy (Joe Johnson-less Atlanta, injured-ravaged Milwaukee, Golden State, Sacramento and Cleveland again (there’s a trip to the Jazz and a rematch against Chris Paul thrown in there). As for columns on LeBron’s return … Marla Ridenour of the Beacon Journal … Ken Berg of CBS … Bill Reiter of Fox Sports … Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo …
Phoenix 107, Golden State 101: Steve Nash (13 points, 16 assists) got the better of Stephen Curry (9 points, 7 assists), and the Suns reached .500. Monta Ellis, who is 4th in the league in scoring, dropped 38 points.

I think the reaction of the crowd would have been more boisterous had the Cavaliers basketball team had actually shown up and made the game sort of competitive.

I thought this was Hernia’s line?
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:25 AM
Yikes. Or maybe they’re not as irrational as we all feared. Or they didn’t want to get arrested. Or they realized it’s sports, not war.
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:25 AM
Because NBA players nowadays are a bunch of soft, mark ass bitches. Duh.
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:25 AM
oh go fuck yourself, TBL.
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:26 AM
No man, they loved the guy. You could see it in their eyes, they missed watching him play. I missed watching him play like that. Sad.
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:26 AM
I do want to know why one owuld be shocked by this. I mean… what do you want them to do? Loot? Rape? Burn down Cleveland?
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:26 AM
How, when you’re down 30+, do you not take your frustrations out on LeBron (38 points)?
Because you’re a professional. Had someone taken a cheap shot the outcry today would be off the charts.

I don’t know. I threw a couple tweets from the local sportscaster guy from Miami on TBLAD that painted a different picture. They were similar to a lot of others I saw. Fights in the stands, also said just escorting Heat fans out for their own safety, before things got ugly
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:28 AM
Blake Griffin didn’t play so there were no highlights last night.

Frauds!
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:30 AM
Cavs were Washington Generals last night. They were the pussies, not the fans.
The fans did what you should expect – boo, jeer, make signs, wear shirts. I did enjoy one sign, “You might’ve went South but your mom is riding West.”
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:30 AM
One of the best moments was CRM and a few others who blasted Cavs chants, and then the Cavs chants being extremely loud, so loud that even Marv had to acknowledge them.
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:31 AM
no video of the fan getting in Lebrons face before the game? weak
2nd time this year Lebron has embarrassed the Cavs on National Television
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:31 AM
DA tweeted that it was like a tight Game 7 in the Finals there.
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:32 AM
I only watched this game during the times that the NFL game was on commercials, but Cleveland looked terrible.
Fuck Lebron though. I seriously hope the Heat fail this season.
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:32 AM
Because NBA players nowadays are a bunch of soft, mark ass bitches
yeah thats it
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:32 AM
Cavs were Washington Generals last night. They were the pussies, not the fans.
Why would they hate LeBron? He made all of them a ton of money, plus he was probably fun to play with. They all probably hate that douchebag owner who can’t seem to make a fool out of himself more than LeBron
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:33 AM
This. I think the players probably care more about the perception among their peer group than they do about the fans. I don’t think doing a fellow professional dirty just to score some points with the minority of fans that were out for blood would be a good career move.
Hard fouls are one thing but taking liberties because you’re getting smashed is totally bush league.

cavs fans dont descend into all out anarchy and behave like fans of the Mex!can soccer team (throwing vomit bombs on the court) and we are pussies…flip it and lets say something did happen the story would be classless degenerate cavalier fans…great lose lose there
fans did what is reasonably accepted of them, booed chanted showed their emotions…the players were the one all too willing to slurp lebrons dong, lets not get it confused
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:34 AM
Menarky, did you try the hose trick yet on your giant lawn turkey?
he didnt come back last night, so i didnt get the chance. i feel rejected.
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:35 AM
I love this blog, but I do have to say, the frequency that violence is advocated in the content is somewhat disturbing.
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:35 AM
How so? B/c of one letter calling out LeBron for the phony he was all along? I’ll never understand the Gilbert bashing from non-Cleveland fans. Makes no sense. Clevelanders want an owner like him, someone with money who will spend, and who takes things like LeBron personally.
Might not exactly make business sense for the way he conducts his business, but it’s what the fans of the team he owns wants.
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:36 AM
am i the only one that notices all facets of ESPN justifying and taking up for leTurd any chance they get?
pretty much, since he’s the most hated man on the planet right now. They are covering him for ratings by beating his story into the ground, not taking up for him.
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:36 AM
Yes, let’s encourage the throwing of live flares at players in order to get a point across. They’re called hooligans for a reason. It is not meant to be complimentary.
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:38 AM
Yea, I’d think the owner might not be the most popular guy with the players. But the Cleveland players were chatting it up like middle school girls in the middle of the game. The dap, the hugs, and all that stuff was lame. I understand friendship and camaraderie, but they did it all during the game. C’mon, man. The worst example was when LeDouche walked to the end of the court during Wade’s (?) free throws. All of this made the Cavs look soft. It reflected in the final score.
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:39 AM
say that to Shaq’s face!
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:40 AM
Yes. Like flipping cars over after winning a title is the desired result or something. Let’s encourage that chaos.

December 3rd, 2010 at 10:42 AM
I don’t get this comment. I’m assuming it’s a joke? I mean, if someone actually did throw something at LeBron you’d put up a scathing post from Duffy or someone else complaining about classless Cleveland fans.
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:42 AM
Miz – I’m gonna get Moe’s tomorrow before the noon kickoffs. Just FYI, brah.
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:42 AM
bsanders: agree on the violence thing, except for when it calls for it on Fireman Ed. My only exception
How so? B/c of one letter calling out LeBron for the phony he was all along? I’ll never understand the Gilbert bashing from non-Cleveland fans. Makes no sense. Clevelanders want an owner like him, someone with money who will spend, and who takes things like LeBron personally.
Tommy Sixpack might love that attitude, but if you step back objectively and look at that guy, to me he looks petty, childish, impulsive and probably went a long way to steering future free agents AWAY from the Cavs, not to them. If I was a fan, I would have been embarrassed, just like I am every time that 92 year old cretin does a presser in Buffalo
Finally, the furor is ready to subside a little, now that LeBron came back, and he announces the day before it he wants to look into tampering charges? Let it go, dude.
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:43 AM

December 3rd, 2010 at 10:46 AM
Awful performance, letdown, all that stuff. But I’d rather LeBron not win a title this year than the Cavs beat them in all four regular season games.
The Heats are still 12-8 and 1-7 v. teams with winning records.
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:47 AM

December 3rd, 2010 at 10:47 AM

December 3rd, 2010 at 10:47 AM
They didn’t get free agents before.
Like I tweeted, he’d be a fool not to go after this if he thought there was a case. Why wouldn’t you try to hamper a team in your conference if there’s proof? Minnesota got penalized five draft picks and cash. If the NBA imposed those types of sanctions, LeBron might seriously have problems winning a title there.
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:47 AM

December 3rd, 2010 at 10:49 AM
Also, there wasn’t one national columnist or media personality that wasn’t impressed with the atmosphere last night. TBL at home watching his television wasn’t impressed – perhaps that’s why he’s not a national columnist.

December 3rd, 2010 at 10:52 AM
The fans reaction was supposed to build up based on LeBron melting down in the face of their hostility. When LeBron played it as cool as he did during the pre-game and the actual game, he basically muted them.

All of Gilbert’s bluster went out the window when, three days after his love letter to LeBron, he agreed to a sign-n-trade with the hated Heat that gave him two #1′s & two #2′s. Now, he’s going to go back and file tampering charges.
Fuck him and the horse he rode in on
December 3rd, 2010 at 10:56 AM
TBL, what a poorly written Ballin’. Your thought process on this situation is idiotic. I’m glad the fans didn’t do anything terrible, it’s just basketball. The Cavs did look horrible, which is expected, they’re missing one of the best players in the world, not easily replaceable.

December 3rd, 2010 at 11:01 AM
How the hell did he make them a ton of money? Maybe they should hate him becasue he gave them a collective “fuck you” this offseason? He shit right on their team for the world to see and they are not offended? Instead of going out with class, he waited until good free agents were signed (not sure who would have gone to Cleveland anyway, but still), and then rolled out without a word to anyone. Bitch move to top all bitch moves and they aren’t pissed? Cleveland is fucked for the foreseeable future, and I would think those guys would resent the fact that their team sucks as bad as it does primarily due to that monumental douchebag.

How much of that last contract’s value was increased for the Brazilian Justin Guarini on the Cavs because of his play next to LeBron? $30 million?
Who was the POS guard who LeBron was pimping for the AllStar game last year?
December 3rd, 2010 at 11:05 AM
They had 9,000 fans the other night and their actually doing well. That’s not good – especially for a franchise that has lost $80 million over the last 7 years.
They need more than 10 games of sustained success to win the fans back after last year. The team is tied to the building and the downtown core, don’t see ownership compounding those losses (not sure how much stock we put in those numbers) by moving the team out.
December 3rd, 2010 at 11:08 AM
True, but they did make the playoffs two years ago and it didn’t exactly translate to success at the turnstiles.
I just said “success at the turnstiles,” Yuck.

JPQ, I’m not trying to make it look like Gilbert is some genius who has never made mistakes. But he’s not an idiot, and he knows that Cleveland was a basketball wasteland before LeBron. The number one thing he has to try and accomplish is to protect against apathy. If he showed that he didn’t care about LeBron left, how do you think that would have left the heartbroken Clevelanders feeling about his team?

JPQ, I’m not trying to make it look like Gilbert is some genius who has never made mistakes. But he’s not an idiot, and he knows that Cleveland was a basketball wasteland before LeBron. The number one thing he has to try and accomplish is to protect against apathy. If he showed that he didn’t care about LeBron left, how do you think that would have left the heartbroken Clevelanders feeling about his team?
I know and I agree he had to stand up for the team and the city. LeBron was (is?) a coddled, spoiled kid/young man who handled that deal completely wrong, but Gilbert also has to acknowledge that he helped create and feed that monster by enabling him for 8 years.
The personal insults were the only part of that I found cringe-worthy. If I worked for a guy that said that, I would have lost quite a bit of respect for him on a personal level, irregardless of his business acumen

Not so fast my friend. Never count out Barry Trotz and the Child Predators.

My brother is close friends with AJ Edds and traveled to all of Iowa’s games over the past couple of years. He has some epic stories of tailgating with Hawkeye fans. Bowl games in warm locations bring out the best in people.
/By best in people I mean lack of girl’s clothing.

The Blue Jackets aren’t leaving Columbus. No chance.
I won’t make an assertion that it won’t ever happen (I know that’s not what you mean). I just don’t think there will be any consideration of relocation any time soon.

the blue jackets leaving ohio would garner the same reaction as dennis northcutt leaving ohio.
nobody would give two fucks and a shit.

i’ve never heard of an NBA career derailed by a catheter.
Quite unfortunate to be honest. He had some potential, but couldn’t get out of the hospital.
And kudos Spence, you managed to succesfully bring Dennis Northcutt into this discussion.

I’d argue the ‘successfully’ part of that statement.

Gilly, are you talking about me? I cover sports for living and love my job. I’ll be at MSG next week for Cuse/MSU, that’s a pretty cool gig.

The funniest part of the article for me is that the majority of these atheist billboards are being defaced by angry christians. Nothing says, ‘The bible is real and you should follow the ten commandments’ like breaking the law.

He absolutely had potential. A scoring machine. But he was never going to be the AI version 2.0 that people were hoping for. Kid had a devastating floater, almost Parker-esque.

Well the Ten Commandments don’t address vandalism so I think they’re fine in the eyes of the Lord…people just need to live and let live already

Good description. I liked his game, just didnt work out for him. Wonder what he’s up to these days?

I needed that laugh on a hungover Friday mixed w/ a lack of sleep.
December 3rd, 2010 at 11:31 AM
It’s still fan talk. At that level, you’re talking about people who are amongst the best in the world at what they do. They seperate business from the field of play. The way they probably look at is that LeBron made the decision that he felt was best for him and his family. If he isn’t there, it’s their job to go out there and win.

Unpossible, they don’t allow those across the border. (Props on the local reference though, I laughed).

that’s the beauty of being Catholic. go to confession, boom. clean slate.
December 3rd, 2010 at 11:35 AM
I dont think Gilbert will move the team. The Cavs and his brand new casino will be codependent.
And TBL, what’s your deal dude?
December 3rd, 2010 at 11:36 AM
Yes I realize they don’t specifically cover vandalism. It’s ironic they are trying to spread a christian message by breaking the law. That’s all I was saying. You don’t have to take everything so literally.
December 3rd, 2010 at 11:39 AM
Didn’t put up much of an effort did they? If Cleveland had any player left with a sack, Miami would have had some tough fouls to contend with instead of showing their bellies in surrender. If you think any of the all-time greats would not have taken that opportunity to prove something, you are mistaken.
December 3rd, 2010 at 11:40 AM
From Simmons:
Enough with this “fans will a team to win” bullshit…the 80′s Celtics won because they have great fucking players
December 3rd, 2010 at 11:41 AM
Oh I could go on for hours about the hypocrisy found in that faith (I was raised one, didn’t stick)…but it’s the Festivus season and I’m trying to be nice
December 3rd, 2010 at 11:45 AM
For example, what if Pierce left Boston in that fashion? Speaks to no one on the team, gets Doc and Ainge fired, and returns to play Boston. You think it goes down the same way? Not hardly.
/did i just use a celtic in a semi-positive way?
//three hail mary’s and a punch in the nuts for me

Good thing there isn’t hypocrisy in any other aspect of humanity. You would have to unbelieve in living.
December 3rd, 2010 at 11:53 AM
Little whinny bitches in Cleveland. Got what they deserved. Hope they shut their fucking mouths now.
December 3rd, 2010 at 11:55 AM
The league has also regulated that type of stuff out of the game because fans at that time were decrying that type of play. The perceived lack of toughness would have alot more to do with that than guys not being as tough. And I’m pretty sure they all knew that Stern and crew. had a close eye on the game last night. s
December 3rd, 2010 at 11:57 AM
LeBron didn’t get the coach and GM fired.
December 3rd, 2010 at 11:59 AM
I’m sure you’re right. All the grab-assing going on was probably legislated by Stern as well.
December 3rd, 2010 at 12:01 PM

/nervously backs out of room
December 3rd, 2010 at 12:14 PM
right, because that wasn’t happening back in the day. Magic/Isiah, Magic/Bird, Magic/Aguirre, or of course Jordan dap hugging with Barkley, Ewing, etc. c’mon man.
December 3rd, 2010 at 12:16 PM
Right, because the owner couldn’t even get LeBron to state or give a clue as to whether or not HE was coming back, but he was able to talk to LeBron about whether or not to keep the GM and Coach? The owner was hoping and gambling. Unfortunately for Ferry,Brown, and him, he guessed wrong.
December 3rd, 2010 at 12:46 PM
Excuse me, but was that magic that put isiah on his ass? c’mon man. Are you seriously questioning the ferocity that those guys played with? Magic, Bird, and most certainly MJ would cut someone’s balls off if it came down to it. Since all have said they wouldn’t have been a bitch as LBJ has been, I’m fairly certain they wouldn’t have tolerated him coming back into their gym and having a day in the park. Dude, you are simply wrong on this. I’m sorry.
December 3rd, 2010 at 12:58 PM
And not to belabor the obvious, but why did he feel the need to hope and gamble?
December 3rd, 2010 at 3:47 PM
No they wouldn’t. They’d have enforcers on their team to do that dirty work. When Oakley came into the league with the Bulls that was his job for Jordan. But times are different and that type of thing has been frowned on by Stern to get rid of the “thug ball ” image. What Melo was banned for 15 games for a few years ago, would have gotten him fined and banned maybe a game or 2 back then.
December 3rd, 2010 at 4:43 PM
Whatever. You want to keep trying to defend your position (unreasonable as it may be) go right ahead. Nothing else for me to see here. There are entire universes of evidence to prove my point, and none to support yours. I’ve proven you wrong at every turn and you refuse to acknowledge it. Magic, not an enforcer, put isiah on his ass. bird trash talked dr j until they fought. mj got up in some grills and so has kobe. these guys take no shit, and have proven such. gibson, jamison, hickson, et al? Pussies.
Not saying they had to fight, but you can certainly let him know he won’t waltzing around the Q and punking your team in the process, and that’s exactly what they let him do.
December 3rd, 2010 at 4:45 PM
Good job ignoring this btw.
December 3rd, 2010 at 4:59 PM
There was nothing to ignore. He assumed that getting rid of those guys would entice LeBron to stay, and hoped that by doing so he would. He made a bad calculation.
December 3rd, 2010 at 5:07 PM
What is your point, saying that players back in the day were tougher than today, and providing a few highlights from over a 30 year span to prove your point? It’s no point. You’re a Wizards fan, Hilton Armstrong was just suspended a game for a foul that at worst would have been nothing more than a tech 15-20 years ago. See, what I just provided you was a factual example to support my argument, not some non factual over generalization like what you’re doing. The game is being officiated and legislated differently. People get suspended for just leaving the bench area when a fight occurs. You’re making a superficial comparison of eras. If you want me to take it seriously, then improve your argument.
