I never understood why…I watched all the Laker playoff games that season, and they caught a lot of breaks during that entire run. By the Finals, just getting out of the West had killed them, especially with Malone gone and no bench.

Another reason why I never consider ESPN people “experts”, they thought the Lakers would blow them out of the building every game for some reason. Even the game 2 victory was a Kobe buzzer beater away from being Detriot’s.
